No Pain, No Gain
Biotech investors have been getting dinged up a bit over the last few weeks. The S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index is is now down almost ten percent from its recent highs and once again we’re hearing calls that the “bubble” is deflating.Â
Biotech has been one of the best investments over the last decade. The index is up ~340% since this began trading in 2006, quintupling the gains in the S&P 500.
This massive outperformance has not been pain-free however. XBI has been in a ten percent drawdown 46% of the time since this began trading in 2006! That’s pretty insane. Almost half of the time, investors have been in “correction” territory.Â
Whether this is the end or a pause or whatever is anyone’s guess but I wanted to point out that outsized gains are never earned without shakeouts and drawdowns along the way.
