See that camera right there? That is a Kodak Retina Reflex and it was owned by my grandfather, Larry Fitzpatrick, in his mid 20’s while he and eventually my grandmother were serving tours in the United States Air-force. He was stationed first in Greenland, then Southern California where he and my grandmother @maryloufit were wed, and then Libya for several years during the late 50’s and early 60’s. He has been kind enough to not only gift me this priceless camera, but also share with me some of the astonishing images he took with it that depict his time spent with my grandmother on tour. I have shared some of the images on my story above, so please take some time to look at them. Thank you Da and Grams for being such inspirational people to me. Photos of the Week Series: June 8, 2018

Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas has been responsible for looking at daily uploads so she has the first set of eyes on every image that the Your Shot community shares. She starts each day looking through thousands of photographs and this series will be a selection of her favorites from the past week. Each Friday she will be sharing her favorites here!

“I wanted to kick off this week’s series with this dreamy photograph of the beach to celebrate World Oceans Day which is focusing on preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean. National Geographic has launched a multi-year effort, Planet or Plastic?, to raise awareness about the global plastic waste crisis. Here you can learn what you can do to reduce your own single-use plastics and take a pledge to help this global effort.

Other selections I made this week have a sense of anticipation or tension in the frame. Anricipation can sometimes bring feelings or axiety or excitement. It is fascinating that by looking a photograph, I can sense the story the photographer was trying to tell by the emotions that I can feel myself.”

Goldsmith, TX | May 2018 Opening shot from the #onassignment I did with @fortunemag on the Permian Basin oil rush! They ran color online and BW in the magazine! So lucky we get those options these days. I’m not even sure which one I like. What do you think? BW or color?
