It’s from chemistry terms where, to simplify, in cis isomers the functional groups are on the same side of a carbon chain, and in trans they are on opposing sides. Also cis is from Latin meaning “same side of” and trans is “other side of”

It’s a weirdly scientific analogy basically, cis people have two functional parts (gender and sex) on the same side, trans have two functional parts that are opposite.
