REMINDER: Disabled people deserve to be seen and deserve portrayal. They deserve love as much as anyone else, and they deserve a happy ending as well. I decided to draw Henry post-redemption with Patty, who is still grappling with her permanent disability. They both learn to live with their disabilities together, happy together :)

The point I'm making is to ask whether or not you can connect with Henry Creel's victimhood when he's no longer the pretty blonde boy. Or the wide eyed little eight year old.

Every post defending him is reminding us of what he was without acknowledging what he is.

It's just another form of pushing him into that perfect victim narrative.

It's why I've never found Vecna scary. That is a disabled man. You find him scary because he is disfigured.

I think a lot about redeemed Henry designs, and I wish more people would incorporate the fact that he is irreversibly disfigured. Like legitimately burned, he is not coming from back that. It feels a lot like Curly from mouthwashing where they'll slap a burn mark or two on him and then call it good.

I understand why it happens. Whenever we see Henry Henry, it's in the human form. But that's in his head. When he's awake, that is his body. That is what he looks like after being warped by the upside down.

True. We don't get to the bottom of it... and this reasoning makes his brutal death even more of a punch in the gut. I repeat, he had to be redeemed because the message it sends is that if you're too broken... well, you're beyond redemption. An obscene (and frightening) message.

I agree. It's more so questioning what this redemption would mean. Does it mean that what he existed as for years is just.. undone? Erased? The horror of Vecna is the body of a disabled, mutilated, traumatized man. Too many people think that fixing Henry is erasing that part of him, and I do think that it is a worrying aspect. Because is the notion that Henry is only loveable if he still looks like that pretty blonde boy?

I think there should be more exploration of what existing outside of his mind in that body looks like for Henry. Otherwise, we are just reinforcing another awful aspect of the Duffer Brothers' writing.

#it is such a major part of his trauma #we see the sa allegory but dont continue on with the allegory of how it changed him into this perceived other being #a lot of the horror of vecna unfortunately plays into disability horror #and I hope people will start to unpack that #what the mindflayer did damaged him so viscerally that he is forever changed #and what makes him scary is so directly tied in his victimhood and having his humanitu stripped #i do not want to get jumped but I see so many think pieces that do not tackle this brand of ableism #dia rambles #stranger things vecna #henry creel #henry ≠ vecna
