Jatinga - Place for bird suicide

It is considered to be the place for birds suicidal. Jatiga is a small village in Assam locates in Dima Haso District about 330 Km from Gauhati. The Village is famous for the unexplained phenomenon of Bird suicides, though it is known that birds do not have suicidal tendency still it is observed that birds come crashing down during the month of September, October and November.

On Contrary lot of people believe that the birds are actually killed by the villagers but not commit suicide, still there are lot of unanswered questions:

Why do birds loose altitude at such a high speed?

Why only these 3 months?

Why do they fly so low?

Why only in the specific area?

Why only between 7:00 Pm - 10:00 Pm? and so on..

These unexplained phenomenon and unanswered questions not only is mystery to the locals but also to lots of Ornithologists across the world. During the study done on this phenomenon of birds committing suicide what came to light was that the birds commit suicide only during last phase of Monsoon, when most of their natural habitat are flooded.

Why is this place unique?

Birds are attracted to only a specific strip of 1.5 Km long and 200 meter wide.

Birds are attracted towards light only from North and not South (Attempts were made but failed)

The Birds do not attempt to fly away after they land near light

This is the only place in the entire world where such phenomenon is noticed

This phenomenon only occur when there is cloud, fog and mist
