Berserk and Dynasty Warriors Create an Unholy Gaming Union

Berserk x Dynasty Warriors

The Roots

Berserk is a dark gothic anime based in the late 80’s and early 90’s that recently made a resurgence in the early 2000’s. Koei-Tecmo created a game that captures the story with a Dynasty Warriors like combat system.

The Mechanics The image I’m providing below will give you an idea of the combat mechanics of the Berserk and the Band of the Hawk (BATBOTH). BATBOTH goes heavy with the standard musou mechanics and as you level up your character, you will have more access to more moves and heavy finishers. Beyond your light and heavy attacks you will have access to your “Berserk Musou” move aka screen clearer and some sub weapons depending on the character of your choice.

There are a variety of characters to choose from but I will note that I must have played as Guts (the main protagonist of the anime) 90% of the time. You have access to a rage meter on the bottom left which once filled you can unleash your ultimate move. Below your health bar is a special meter that can fill up multiple levels to release a super mode / powered up mode. Attacks during your super mode will feel up the rage bar.

The Look

To describe the looks of BATBOTH would be to combine dark cell shaded anime with Musou-esque character models. What I mean by this, is that most anime may games made my Koei-Tecmo share the visual aesthetic of their other anime inspired games like Attack on Titan and Arslan Warriors. (both are great games also).

The in game graphics are somewhat toned down to compensate for the amount of character models on the screen. The in game cutscenes really show off some high quality character models confined in the art aesthetic of the game.

On occasion, as the story progresses, you will be treated with anime cutscenes from the newer version of the anime, not the classic. Purists may argue that the original anime has better animation but that’s definitely a different conversation to be had.

The Story/Plot - Taken from Wikipedia

“The story follows Guts as the "Black Swordsman", an appearance which was briefly seen in the first episode of the 1997 television series as well as in the final scene of the Golden Age Arc films.[7]

Guts was once a wandering mercenary taken in by the mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk (鷹の団, Taka no Dan) and he fought alongside them before their mutilated leader, Griffith, sacrificed his followers to become one of the God Hand and continue his dream of ruling a kingdom of his own. Only Guts and his lover Casca, who lost her sanity and memory from the horrors she saw and endured, escaped the "Eclipse" ritual, though they were branded with marks that attract evil, restless spirits and other similar entities. With Casca in the care of blacksmith Godo and his adopted daughter Erica as well as Rickert, the only member of the Hawks absent during the Eclipse, Guts set off to hunt down the God Hand's Apostles to find and kill Griffith in a quest for vengeance. Years have passed, and Guts is joined in his hunt by an elf named Puck as events the God Hand have long waited for are beginning to unfold.”

Note: I did beat the game and the story ends where the anime is currently at. It DOES NOT encompass the whole story of Berserk.

The Sound and Feel

BATBOTH won’t be winning awards for its soundtrack. Many of the audio tracks are somewhat remixed versions of the anime’s score. The music isn’t bad but it doesn’t do much to stand out from the many games similar to it.

The game excels in it’s sound effects. You can feel every swing and impact of Gut’s attacks and you can feel the ferocity of his fighting style. The other characters do very little in impact department but they do feel like your playing another Dynasty Warrior character. Like I said, I played Guts 90% of the time and I spent the most time capturing his gameplay.

The hard sound of steel bashing and clanging on another is a great feeling. The swoosh of the sword swing and the sound effects of the hits really make you feel you are doing some damage.It feels good and the sound does a great job of keeping you immersed.

Last Thoughts

If you don’t feel like watching the anime and if you’re a fan of musou game style give BATBOTH a rental or even a purchase at a discounted rate. Keep in mind these anime games typically have limited printing due to their licensing. If you don’t mind the core game play of Dynasty Warriors with an anime aesthetic in a dark gothic universe this may be right up your alley. This game serves to be more of a supplement to a Berserk fan than a musou fan. If you want to play a better musou game go check out Arslan, Dynasty Warriors 8, and Samurai Warriors 2. There are many other musou games out there with better gameplay and possibly more characters to play and select.

Remnant: A Dungeon Crawler Third Person Shooter Adventure

Remnant: From the Ashes Review

Remnant: From the Ashes is a third person shooter shooter with dungeon crawling elements.

The Roots - pun intended

I’ve played a lot of games in my life and if you have also, you may notice that many games tend to copy from each other. System, mechanics, and formulas, the gaming world has always been a place of inspiration and “borrowed ideas”. I can count more Diablo clones than I have fingers. First person shooters with a regenerating life bar are more prevalent than those with health items that you need to pick up to recover health. Remnant takes the third person shooter genre and flips its world upside down with randomized dungeons and boss encounters.

Think the world generating mechanics of Diablo 3 and plus them in a Gear of War esque shooter. Now sprinkle in some role play game elements like stats, equipment, and gear and you have yourself an idea what Remnant: From the Ashes is like.

The Mechanics

Third person shooters have always been more of my preference than first person. The reason for this is like seeing my character. I like seeing them in action. I like seeing their progression. When they equip new gear and items I want to see it on their body. It shows that I’m getting stronger as I progress throughout the game.

I’ve been told by other gamers that Remnant is a third person “Dark Souls” like type of game. In my opinion, I think they are only half accurate. Remnant may have a “souls-like” feel to it but it is definitely it’s own experience. If Gears of War and Darksiders 2 had a gaming baby, the result would definitely be Remnant.

Remnant feels good to play. The gunplay feels good. Though some guns lack impact, there is definitely enough variety of weapons  in the game to satisfy your play style. Your character gets a primary, secondary, and a melee weapon. These are classified as small, large, and melee in the game’s mechanics. You can equip mods on weapons for additional effects. For example, one mod can create a healing circle while another mod can enable you to fire rockets from any of your weapons.

The Look

Once you start your quest to find answers of the coming apocalypse, you can create a character from the limited options it provides. To be honest, the head is going to be the only important portion of the character creator. Most of the time, your character will be wearing a hat or helmet due to the nature of the game's armor choices. Once you’ve cleared Remnant’s prologue you are introduced to some NPCs. One of the NPCs will be your go to person for the build you want to start with. Depending on the role you choose you will be granted the matching armor and weapon set that best fits your class. Your protagonist can equip a head, torso, and feet armor that is visible on your character model. Aesthetics are IMPORTANT!

Remnant’s art style is very dark and dreary. Lots of brown and greys on the color palette. There are a variety of environments in Remnant and all of them have a post-apocalyptic vibe. There seems to be a trend with the “comic” art style. World of Warcraft does it and this game does it on it’s own level. Unfortunately, nothing new to see here folks.

The Story/Plot

You are a person from an island tribe sent on a vision quest to slay the dragon to save the village and world.  You crash at your destination and are immediately attacked by The Root’s minions. You arrive at the last bastion of humanity which happens to be an abandoned underground fallout shelter. You are tasked with finding one of the most important people in the game. As you progress you will find items that reveal more of the story and it’s lore. This was made popular by the Dark Souls games and is often used by other games that are often referred to as a Dark Souls clone. From all the items and writings you find scattered all over the game you have to find this man because he holds the answers to everything.

The Sound

I’m not a big sound professional but the sound in this game is subpar. The ambient tones and subtle music of the environment isn’t anything to cheer about. The game sound effects are good but not excellent. The weapon sound effects could probably have more range. The music during the boss encounters is great but memorable music found is too far in between.

The Feel

Going back to what I said earlier. If Gears of War and Diablo had a baby you would have Remnant as its offspring. Remnant feels like you're playing Gears of War minus the cover mechanic. You can still sprint, vault, and dodge roll just like Gears of War. But the melee action is where Remnant feels at its best. Every hit and swing of my fire sword felt heavy and swift like an amateur swordsman. Unfortunately, unless you are creating a melee build character, melee attacks are not used often and even with a melee build you will still have to put some effort in your gun play. Melee in this game is equivalent to using the knife in the Resident Evil games.

Last Thoughts

If you ever wondered what a third person shooter was going to feel with some fantasy rpg elements. This can swing either way. This may either ruin your third person shooter experience or enhance it. Some may not care about the rpg elements and some may say it’s unnecessary. The game can get difficult on higher difficulties. I played the game with a friend on normal and we barely had any trouble with the mobs and bosses. On hard mode, we had a problem with the first dungeon. There are more monsters on the screen and are much tougher than their normal counterpart. On hard mode we had to take our time peeking at every corner and setting up ambushes in order to survive. Playing this game on Hard cooperatively is the way this game is meant to be played. I wouldn’t suggest playing single player on hard more. The game can get quite unfair and the pacing is extremely slowed.

If you are a fan of the genre paying full price for the game isn’t a bad move. There is plenty of value in this game. If don’t feel like playing the story, you can start a game in adventure mode.

Wasted in the Wasteland: Why 76 is worth a second chance

Fallout 76 is a post-apocalyptic open-world RPG by Bethesda Softworks. It is the most recent installment in the Fallout series. It's Wastelanders expansion was released April 20, 2020.

My first introduction to Fallout was back when Fallout 3 was released in 2008. “If you love your RPGs like you do, you're going to love this!” I only dabbled in it at the time (Halo was my main jam), but it was definitely something I enjoyed when I did. I mean, an atompunk world satirizing the 50s/60s nuclear obsession?! Yes please, haha! Fallout 3: New Vegas is what sealed the deal for me. That is the game that just swallowed me into the Fallout series. Then came the announcement for 76 and I knew my free time was over.

Fallout 76 hasn't deviated much mechanically from it's predecessors. And if you've played Skyrim or other Fallouts then the controls will be similar, if not identical. You can toggle between first and third person camera view and use V.A.T.S. (Vault-tech Assisted Targeting System) to detect enemies and target them for better damage or instant KO. You can upgrade your character using the perk system called SPECIAL and continue to acquire new perks or move perk points around after level 50. I love how the perk card system allows you to swap out perks as needed per situation (crafting, building, battle, etc.). You can also have a team of up to 4 members and share beneficial perks depending on your Charisma. And much like Fallout 4, you can build using your CAMP which carves out a little territory for you. Your party members can also build in your camp as well, which I can say from experience is awesome. Your camp can be moved for a fee, but be aware! If your friends have placed something in your home you don't have the plans for, you'll lose it. Cosmetic items for CAMP and character can be purchased through the Atom Shop (located in the menu) and you can earn Atoms in game while completing tasks.

76 over all is a very pretty game. The graphics aren't Final Fantasy XV mind blowing, but with recent quality of life updates (circa 2019) the environments are even more enjoyable than before. Character creator follows in Fallout 4 fashion and lets you truly make your character yours. Yes, you too can recreate Waluigi once more. Fallout has always been environment driven and 76 is no exception. From the radiated wastes of the Toxic Valley to the eerie vibe of the Mire, Bethesda gave us a truly amazing environment for us to explore. And if the recreated Mothman Museum at Point Pleasant in game doesn't sell it, I can't help you haha.

Fallout 76 begins with you waking up after sleeping in on Reclamation Day. Who misses a huge party?! Well you did, so now you're the last one out. But that means you get to grab everyone's left behind stuff. Finders keepers right? And thus begins your hoarder adventure. Wait, no, that's my game MO, haha. You actually get your bearings, follow some helpful tutorials, and head down that old country road right into the big wide Appalachia circa 2102 just 25 years after the Great War. Here you'll now find signs directing you to the Wayward where an NPC named Duchess has set up her humble bar to welcome the new arrivals entering the Appalachia region. And you'll encounter some newcomers to the Wastelands on your road there as well.

“But ChaosDicei! Fallout 76 doesn't have NPCS!” Yes, it didn't, not before. Before your quests were gathered from robots, holotapes, and notes randomly out in the wild. This was designed to give you your own narrative to an environment mostly devoid of human life. With the introduction of Wastelanders you now have NPCs to encounter and talk to. Why is this important? This is the selling point for 76 now. If you've heard the reviews of 76 prior to the drop of Wastelanders, you'll know it wasn't well received. With Wastelanders you can now tackle a myriad of quests out in the wastes, gain allies for your CAMP, and even decide if you'll side with the new Raiders or Settlers both striving to get a foothold in Appalachia. Wastelanders was the best update to come to 76 thus far and has really given the game new purpose and life.

And what Wasteland wandering is complete without Fallout Radio? Aptly named Appalachia Radio, you can punch Deathclaws and slap Super Mutants to the tunes of Lily Wilde, Bing Crosby, and Nat King Cole to name a few. And of course “Country Roads” the unofficial theme song for 76. If you're not into the radio, Bethesda doesn't skimp on the ambient background music. Some is even reminisce of Skyrim in tone.

The overall feel of Fallout 76 is very much what you'd think: gritty, hazardous, and intriguing. Locations have to be discovered to be land marked, but there are many that are environmental and fun to come across. Like it's predecessors, it still retains very much a desolate, sometimes isolated feel of being one of the few left alive in the world.

If I haven't piqued your interest yet, I promise Fallout 76 is worth a revisit. It's free to play on Xbox with GamePass (sadly, not free on PS4) and the newest content is a 100% free downloadable update. And Bethesda has announced future plans for the game that look very promising. They have already released the first of their Fallout Seasons that progress much like Destiny's season pass model. I've had more fun in the last several months with their bug fixes and additions than I did when it was released. So if you want to launch a nuke with your friends, take back a town from Scorched, help the Overseer, or just enjoy the updated world, GO FOR IT. I encourage it! It's such a richer world than when it first started.

As someone who stepped away from Fallout 76 just a few weeks after it released, it's worth a revisit. If you haven't played 76 because of the reviews, I implore you to at least give it a try. Who knows? You just may find yourself a new favourite game.

The Musou Mashup! Warriors All-Stars Review

Warriors All-Stars is a celebration of Koei Tecmo characters in one a new musou game.

The Roots

I still remember my first taste of musou. The Dynasty Warriors series has been around since the launch of the Playstation 2 era. Released on August 3, 2000 Dynasty Warriors changed the beat em up formula from the 2D platform on to the 3D platform. Just in case you don't know what Dynasty Warriors is, it is based off the Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise. ROTK is famously known as a strategy game and Dynasty Warriors is to be the action genre of ROTK. This was my first memorable jump from 2D to 3D on the beat em up genre.

The Mechanics

Much like my Dungeon Fighter Online review, beat em ups are often labelled as repetitive. But much like Dungeon Fighter it's all about "how you fight, which means characters play a big role in creating variety in a game with repetitive gameplay. It's no secret. You have to like this type of game to enjoy it. If you enjoy the characters of Koei Tecmo games and the Dynasty Warriors formula this game was created for that desire.

Every musou iteration will have it's own special game, combat, and system mechanics. From Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Orochi Warriors, and more each game has it's own type of combat system. As the games developed over time W-Force (DW's developer) has added and removed certain things to keep the game fresh. Some changes are welcome and some changes seemed unnecessary. Personally, being able to add more into a game is more important than taking away. The player can also choose to use certain combat mechanics and options. Having that option will always add value to the game.

New(ish) but familiar combat

If you've played a musou game, picking up this game will be natural to you. Typical Dynasty Warriors fanfare. There's an main attack and a heavy attack, a jump button, and a musou (special) button. Reach character will have it their own combat tree but not every character is unique. The characters fall under specific combat molds and skill trees. There isn't really much new to the combat with a few exceptions of a few addition "tag features". Pressing a direction on the d-pad will enable you to temporarily tag in one of the 4 members of your squad. After a few minutes you will return to your main character. It's a strange addition but I applaud them for trying to keep it fresh.

The Look

Warriors All-Stars is not going to break any boundaries in it's graphics department. Character models carry specific rigs that are will be shared with the roster. You'll find many of the character models share the same neutral pose and moving animations. I will say that Warriors All-Stars does do a great job with "keeping it together". Very seldom I encountered frame drops especially with all the spark effects and the amount character models on the screen. I still remember in older Dynasty Warriors titles where character models would disappear during combat so compensate for frame rate. The power of the older system could not sustain the vision of what musou games were trying to achieve.

The Story/Plot

Koei Tecmo characters are summoned to a new world where three members of the royal family are fighting for each sacred treasure they hold to save their world from impending doom. The goal is to combine the three sacred treasures to save a spring that brings life to the world. Each member of the royal family summons their own set of Koei Tecmo characters and as you progress you will meet and acquire more heroes to add to your roster. The plot unravels the more you play. And as you play you find out that there is more to the story than meets the eye.

SPOILERS Once you unlock specific heroes and achieve certain criteria different story paths will unlock that will lead to one of the many endings. This game offers multiple playthroughs depending on which characters you have unlocked and which faction you decided to fight for. Personally, I unlocked about seven to eight endings on my blind run. I later returned to the game to pursue the true ending. There are also hero endings that are more focused on the relationships of some heroes. These are what I call optional endings.

The Sound

In my opinion, EVERY music of a musou game sounds the game. It doesn't matter if you've played Dynasty, Samurai, Arlsan, Berserk, One Piece, musou music is very noticeable. Instrumental J-Rock riffs with some remixed themes from certain stages of each franchises games do show up. Another good thing is you can pick the background music before a stage loads. Having control of the music does give it more variety but personally, I did not pay much attention to the music.

The Feel

It feels.. well.. like a Dynasty Warriors game. LOL. There are some characters that offer more impact with some of their move sets but it will ultimately break down to which characters move set you prefer to beat the level as quick as possible to move the story along and grind out those levels. It always feels good to play a musou game when you want to feel like strong bad ass. Video games are suppose to be fun right?

The Why

Why should you play this? Check some off this list:

Do you like Dynasty Warriors? Do you like the Musou series in general? Do you like any of the playable characters in the game? Have you ever wished there was a Musou game of the character you picked? Do you want to feel like a super powered warrior in a battlefield?

If you said yes to 90% of these things you should play it. I'd like to confess that I DID NOT buy this game at launch nor did I buy it a full price. As a long time gamer I KNOW what musou games are and what they have to offer. Personally, I don't like to play full price for games that I want to play and not NEED to play. I already knew what this game had to offer and I picked it up at a $19.99 price point new. With so many games release and my ever increasing backlog, I can afford to wait. And unless they release another musou game that blows me out of the water I won't be picking up any of them at launch anytime soon.

Last Thoughts

Referencing on "The Why" if you are a fan of the series, just add this to the many other iterations of the musou series. If you are collecting, it's a must have to add to your collection. I enjoy mash-ups and collaborations and Warriors All-Stars did a decent job placing characters in cel-shaded JRPGS into an action brawler title. If you are a fan of any of the playable characters, you will either enjoy this game or think this game is weird. I don't blame you. Remember when they made Hyrule Warriors? They put Link in turned him into a musou character. Many people thought it was a weird Zelda game, but what they really needed to know was it was a musou game with Link as the main character.

If you can pick up this title at around $20-30 dollars it will be worth your time. There is over 20-30 hours of gameplay in there. Fair warning as I repeat my statement from earlier, if you aren't a fan of musou games this game may not change your mind. But if you have an open mind and a wallet, it wouldn't hurt to try and play this decent average action game.

Dungeon Fighter Online: The Action RPG Beat Em Up for FREE!

The Roots

Ever since I first played Renegade and Double Dragon on the NES I knew i was a fan of the beat em up video game genre. Multiple beat em ups would follow after that from one generation of console to another. Some of my most memorable gaming experiences has been from beat em ups. I remember playing Final Fight in the arcades in the late 80's and dumping all my quarters in one visit to the arcade, just so I can see what happens next.

The Mechanics

Some may argue that most of these games are "repetitive". I agree. They are quite repetitive. Most beat em ups typically only have about 2 or 3 buttons beyond the control stick. There's an attack button, a jump button, and maybe, depending on the game, a "special" button. The special button is often based on the beat em up your playing. Some beat em ups use the button as a long rage projectile attack. Some use it as a "screen clearer".  A screen clear usually kills everyone bad guy on the screen to keep your character from being whelmed. Most of the time, these screen clearers are often finite and in limited supply.

Dungeon Fighter takes the beat em up genre and adds slight fighting game mechanics with rpg elements. You can do special moves with special inputs and you can level up your character and equip gear and items onto them to improve their stats. Most beat em ups do not have this formula. You are limited to basic attack and a jump. Sometimes you can combine your button presses to have different attacks but not at the level of directional inputs much like in a fighting game.

The Look

Dungeon Fighter Online (DFO) has a pixel art style reminiscent of the arcade era of beat em ups mixed with an anime art aesthetic. The concept art is amazing and the effects of pixel art style is a personal favorite of mine. The animations of the characters are very "anime" and stylistic but that's just the art direction DFO wants to take.

The Story/Plot

There's a story and it's confusing. Every character class you select has their own generic story background which isn't really represented in the main story of the game. To be honest after my first play-through I stopped paying attention to the story and just focused mainly on the action.

The Sound

There's barely any music. When I play I usually have music playing in the background. The death cries of the NPCs are all recycled throughout the game. It feels like sound wasn't the focus of the game but if they did I'm not seeing it.

The Feel

Feels awesome. Mixing a beat em up with fighting game mechanics adds extra depth to the genre. Adding weapons, armor, accessories, and even avatar pieces also creates a more unique experience for the gamer. DFO really shines on the gameplay. It's called dungeon fighter because you have to clear rooms (dungeons) until you get to the boss. The bosses are typical pushovers much like most of the game's library of villains. But I did notice once you get to level 80+ the difficulty curve does increase drastically. You are easier to kill and the baddies take more hits to defeat.

The combat feels great. There is somewhat of an impact on most hits but it's how they are delivered and visually portrayed is what makes them feel powerful. Once again this game is very anime inspired so if you don't like that that art style then you probably won't like this game. There are also multiple character classes you can select that play completely different from one another. Playing the game as a Slayer will have a totally different feel as if you were playing with the Gunner. I suggest you try them all to find your favorite way to fight.

My personal favorite

The Why

Play it if you love beat em ups. The price is right and you don't need an expensive computer to play it. The game has a stamina/energy meter that depletes once you enter a new room in a dungeon. This meter refreshes every 24 hours. You can also acquire in game items to give you more stamina for more play time. To be honest, each character has enough stamina up to where once it you run out you are pretty satisfied with how much you've covered. If you still don't feel content feel free to create another character because she character has their own stamina meter. DFO also has a PVP mode if you're into that kind of thing. (I never really play it).

Last Thoughts

If you like beat em ups, anime style, and FREE, play this game. You can even play it with your friends. Up to 4 players can dungeon fight. If you want to invest in the game and support it you can buy "CERA" which is the in game current that can only purchased with real life dollars. Most of the purchasable items are cosmetic avatar pieces that help your character stand out and look unique. But without cosmetic avatars there is no way to make your character look distinguished. If you're a fan of beat em ups check it out. If you're not, I'd say pass on this one, but if you are looking to get into a FREE action RPG with an anime look, DFO is a great place to start.

Destiny 2 Wastes Characters Fans Are Excited To See

The world of Destiny that Bungie has built is full of fascinating characters, but when Bungie tries to weave these characters into Destiny 2, their stories fall flat.

It’s simple really. If they want to just lay on the plot armor, the “Infinite Forest” is the ideal place for guardians to relive the great moments of Destiny’s heroes. Why not have a scenario as a guardian playing with Ana or Osirus during those heroic moments. Say the Vex are trying to change “time” by altering history... well... there you go.

$60 Games Are Here to Stay, Says Activision Blizzard President

During a financial conference call, Activision Blizzard's President and COO argued that, despite Fortnite's influence, $60 games would remain a viable business model.

A couple things about this post & article:

1. The price point of $60 dollars doesn’t mean video games aren’t getting expensive. The more expensive video games become the more they are going to cut from the core game and they are going to distribute the rest via DLC. Don’t think for a second there’s a sigh of relief here. $60 is simply just a comfortable amount for people to spend on because that’s how much they have been paying for over 10 years now.  Season passes will be much more important in the future and I guarantee you they will be $39.99 aka $40.

So with that said, a complete game is now $100. But if you think about this on the flip side, this prevents us from buying a game “full price” if the game is trash. They are STILL giving us a choice on how much we can invest in our gaming. It’s when that choice is forced that’s another conversation we, as gamers, all need to have.

2. They thought about adding a Battle Royale Mode this awful trend needs to stop. Stop trying to push that mode on us. Stop trying to push that mode on a game where we DON’T want to play a battle royale mode. STOP trying to blindy follow trends. If we want to play PUBG, Fortnite, or hell even Radical Heights, we’ll play them. We came to play Overwatch because it’s Overwatch. If you are going to force it on us, make a different game using your Blizzard characters with it’s own battle royale like engine. Stop.

We get it, there are trends but make a different game. Stop cashing in on trends otherwise, “battle royale” style games will be the fidget spinner of gaming.
