saying the democratic primary is now down to two white men implies bernie sanders and joe biden come from the same background as every other non-obama president and pretends that bernie sanders' lifelong commitment to civil justice doesn't come from growing up learning about the suffering his family underwent during the holocaust.
it's fucking insane someone could look at him and decide his being jewish, which would make him the first jewish president in the history of this country, isn't important enough of a 'diversity win' to care about because he's not elizabeth warren, a white woman who lied about being an indigenous american for decades to boost her chances of being diversity hired
if you want to rail against the type of man who dominates american politics in order to advocate for more diverse leadership, take aim at joe biden, the white man who pushed the racist crime bill through the legislature that directly led to the mass incarceration of black people in this country for drug offenses

someone in the crowd at his rally tonight (march 5, 2020) unfurled a massive nazi flag behind him, and since then photos of trump supporters protesting against him as recently as last year with swastikas on their posters have started making the rounds again.
when the media boils bernie sanders down to ‘just another white man’ they are intentionally burying his lived experience as a jewish person because they do not want to acknowledge the discrimination he has faced that has made him the staunch advocate for civil justice for all people that he has always been
y’all, I get the point here and I agree with it — it’s time for the first Jewish President. Biden sucks.
but I do want to push back on that description of Warren. she didn’t intentionally lie about Native American heritage so she could be a diversity hire — politifact even says there’s no proof she got any special advantage in her career (see attached link, sorry, I’m on mobile). when she applied for college and law school, she identified as white or declined to apply based on minority status. it was only after she got hired at Harvard that she disclosed her background — and then they started touting her as proof their faculty was diverse.
here is why I think this is important:
1. claiming Native heritage you don’t have is a shitty thing to do, period. it’s appropriative, it’s privileged, and it’s unfortunately all too common in the midwest. my grandma told me a similar story about my family, and a lot of my friends growing up heard the same. we’re not native — we’re white.
this is the first time many of us saw someone held responsible for this claim, recognized that our consequences have actions, and took steps to atone for that. it really sucks that many people who hear that they have native heritage aren’t educated on the harms of this false claim earlier. but I’m hopeful there’s a net positive here that other ignorant kids (and I’m talking literally 10 years old) won’t use their supposed Native heritage as a fun fact in icebreakers.
2. we should 100% criticize Warren for this. dna tests don’t prove heritage — it’s about participating in the culture. but we need to criticize her for the things she actually did, and weaponizing her supposed heritage wasn’t one of them.

I’m earnest. I’m idealistic. I’m optimistic. I believe that people should have every opportunity to succeed, and we owe each other those chances. I believe we should treat each other the way we all want to be treated. I believe in kindness. I think that we should all aspire to make our worlds a better place.
Some people say I’m naive. That’s probably true. But I don’t want to be the kind of person who sits back and accepts things as they are.
Some people say I’m sensitive. That’s probably true. But if we aren’t feeling the ramifications of our actions and empathizing with the people who are struggling the most, how are we going to make things better?
I believe you can be hopeful and practical at the same time. I believe we should build a world where they are the same.
