this is real though, right?
imagining shane hanging out with his parents and while he's away from his phone doing something with his dad a call comes in. yuna sees this and goes, "shane, someone's calling you!"
and shane says, "who is it?"
"lily!"
"oh." shane immediately sets aside what he's doing and walks over, saying to his mom, "that's ilya."
yuna looks at him in confusion as he picks up his phone. "why is ilya saved as 'lily' in your phone?"
and shane looks at her, away, shrugs as if it's obvious and simply says, "I can't have ilya rozanov saved on my phone, mom" before answering the call with a, "hey, baby" and walking away.
leaving yuna (and david) standing shocked and, once again, shaken at how little they knew about their son and the layers of concealment he's had to operate under for years just to love who he loves.
"He rubbed slow patterns over his skin, letting his nerves wake up. He heard Rozanov shifting in his chair. ... Maybe he still had some power here." Heated Rivalry, p. 134
He’s just too beautiful. Ilya never stood a chance. Imagine waking to this every morning. I’d never get out of bed.
Personally I do think that sometimes non-hockey fans can end up mischaracterizing Shane and Ilya because they don't know enough about hockey/hockey playstyles
The Ilya we see in Heated rivalry would not be throwing the first punch, he's not an enforcer. Ilya is a star center and a Pest. He wouldn't be doing his job correctly if he was punching players every other game, it would end up with not enough ice time to let him be the playmaker he's paid to be.
But being a pest can be playmaking! Find a player to bait, emotionally push them just enough that they try to fight you, and then get the fuck out of there before the ref gives you both penalties. This gets your team the power play. There is probably someone on Ilya's line dedicated to helping him get out of the fights he starts, and finishing them for him!
I also think this is also something that Shane would respect. Ilya is good at it and it's a good strategy for his team. I don't think Shane would see it as some dirty tactic, because Shane probably thinks everyone with a brain can see it for what it is! He probably thinks everyone should be able to see that being an asshole is a tactic for Ilya, that it's something to ignore and not fall for, that it's a strategy and not personal beef.
I think Shane's more disappointed when a Metro falls for it. Shane sees it as Ilya set up a Looney Toons ass obvious trap and one of his teammates ran into it. Why be mad at Bugs Bunny when you can be mad at your defenceman for falling for a fucking Bugs Bunny trap.
this just occurred to me but i think while shane’s safe space is on ilya’s crotch ilya’s safe space is shane’s chest. for no reason at all. except at tampa the first time he ever cried in front of shane he was safely tucked in shane’s chest. the first time he said i love you he cried and laid on shane’s chest while shane ran his fingers through his hair.
so now when ilya feels clingy or sad or tired he crawls into shane’s chest and nuzzle between his pecs and shane’s hands fly up automatically to scratch his scalp and it’s the safest, warmest place he could ever be
the way they’re looking at each other here
And the bit is, you were NOT down so bad, nor felt your life so threatened, that you felt safe enough to hunt a Black child down and shoot him in the back over a BOTTLE OF WATER. Something that's worth a buck fifty. Something that shit, maybe he needed. He didn't steal anything, but even if he HAD stolen that water, it's WATER. It's not something of mass expense. If I saw someone stealing one singular bottle of water, I'm probably not stopping them, because damn it is hot and you might be in need at that point. That's how I know that shit was racially motivated. They felt like hunting a Negro due to other unaddressed rage and antiblack bias, I will not be convinced otherwise. And I hope it comes around full circle.
RIP to a real one.
(I believe it was the trailer for The Odyssey that killed him.)

Do you know how hard it is to do this while standing still.
Do you know how hard it is to do this while doing something incredibly physically demanding.
Sound on.
So shook that I recognized them! That's Khadija Mbowe, a brilliant video essayist on youtube. Here's a link to their channel. They're brilliant and compassionate. Go check them out!
I know i have already discussed this ad nauseum, but I love that Shane never talks down to Ilya because of his weaker english skills. especially at the beginning when he’s just moved from russia. he just talks like he would with anyone else.
similarly, i love that ilya never teases or laughs at shane when he misses obvious conversational cues (re: ilya asking shane four times in florida if he is still seeing rose). he obviously finds it endearing mostly but even when he starts to get frustrated and just asks outright he never makes shane feel lesser or aware of his misstep. he’s endlessly patient with it
they are both just so earnest with each other, sort of unintentionally??? they really are like fated mates hehe <3
Okay justice for Ilya Rozanov, a man who notably managed his entire families finances and his dementia-having fathers caretaking since he was literally a teenager, while also essentially raising himself to be an elite, generational athlete by himself.
like what is this ‘Ilya needs the threat of a sex ban to pick up his socks’ slander or this ‘Ilya has terrible financial literacy’ misinformation or this ‘Ilya only eats junk food and needs to be forced to eat his veggies’ tomfoolery
Shane not moving his arm even after Ilya releases his wrist because he’s a good boy
