oh yea i only just realized after like 2 years why Katsa was able to kill king leck. its cuz her grace is *survival* and so her grace kind of cancelled his out in that crucial moment cuz it was a threat to Po's / her survival. at least that's what I think. feel pretty dumb that i didnt pick up on that before fsdfagdsga

something about katsa that’s so important to me is that her all or nothing thinking is introduced so early on in the book and continues to cause her problems the entire time. some people are afraid of her so she avoids everyone. she doesn’t want to get married and have kids so everything about her is abnormal and wrong. and it mirrors her other character traits (stubborn, a bit sheltered) and has huge effects on how she deals with obstacles for the rest of the book! remember, this is the girl who gets told you don’t have to commit to marriage to have a relationship with someone and she spends 3 days having to rewire her brain over it. it’s why she feels so visceral and real the entire time and why her story is so satisfying—this trait never goes away, it just becomes a little more flexible and she becomes a little happier and then the book ends. masterpiece

Recently reread Graceling, and I was thinking about the wildcat nickname (it’s always kind of bugged me cause it’s never mentioned outside of referring to Katsa). Finally figured out what bugged me even more though, which is that Po got the nickname from hearing her thoughts. Every time they fought Katsa was thinking that she was just like a wildcat while attacking him and he heard that and thought it was cute enough to use as a nickname.

What’s even better is that there is no evidence that Katsa has ever seen a wildcat, so imagine Katsa hearing tales of wildcats (having always been randa’s lackey) and liking them so much that she compares herself to them.

there is probably no one else out there who's fans of both leverage (the tv show) and graceling (the book series by kristin cashore) but. my thoughts are Thinking and I have to share anyway.

specifically I am thinking about katsa (graceling) and eliot spencer (leverage). just. the shared narrative of being highly skilled fighters used as tools by powerful men. thinking of yourself as a monster. the fear of being controlled by someone who can twist your mind. leck and randa and moreau. having to live with the terrible things you’ve done. am I worthy of being loved? am i more than the worst things I’ve ever done? being made to feel like a dog!!

"A monster that refused, sometimes, to behave like a monster. When a monster stopped behaving like a monster, did it stop being a monster? Did it become something else?" (Graceling, pg 137)

"Well, and if she must be a dog, at least she would no longer be in this man's cage. She would be her own, she would possess her own viciousness, and she would do what she liked with it." (Graceling, pg 167)

also thinking about who would win in a fight. I'm leaning katsa because of her grace (gracelings have a special power/superpower/extreme skill, and hers is fighting, basically) and because we never see anyone beat her in a fight... but we also never see anyone beat eliot, really, and modern fighting techniques are surely better than medieval fighting techniques. he'd be stronger, but she'd be faster, and neither of them would go down easily. idk. I'd love to see it.

(I can't figure out any good way to put them together tho because they live in very different worlds and an au would mess with what makes them who they are. maybe some kind of dimensional travel?)

Yes, but also I think Katsa also reflects Parker "raised as a tool, not a human" as well. Like Parker, part of her journey is learning to get in touch with her emotions and seeing herself as more than what Randa built her to be. Like Parker, she can push herself beyond what normal humans can (think about how Parker can fit into those vents), and is good at planning things out. Katsa is what you get when you smoosh both Eliot and Parker together.

Also this means that Po is the Hardison equivalent, which I love

I read Graceling around 2010 (that’s 15 years ago)

I was a teeny tiny teenager around that time and have you ever considered the marks that Kristin Cashore left on all those girls who got around to read about Katsas story?

Not only did I, who was forbidden to show anger, learn that anger can lead to freedom and safety, but also I learned at such a young age that it is entirely fine, even beautiful, to commit to partnership in ways that are not marriage.

Cashore also described how Katsa took seabane to prevent pregnancy. She deliberately formed it into its own moment, but didn’t make a big deal out of it at the same time - which meant a lot to teenager me and even more to the adult that I am today.

Also making the male main character into someone who is emotionally intelligent, sensitive and also capable to appreciate the beauty of his surroundings, even after losing eye-sight must have left imprints on young boys who got around to read Po‘s story.
