Eight of Swords. Art by Caitlin Cordell, from the Unruly Beings Tarot.
One of the goals of this deck is to have the user connect and build empathy with the beings depicted. It seems like western culture has only more recently begun to relate and communicate with the more than human world, whereas indigenous peoples have been able to relate and learn from the natural wold since their existence. Colonization and Christian dominion beliefs have turned our values towards power and control. This is unnatural. We are supposed to be in stewardship and communication with all life, but sadly we are trapped in this human centered way of thinking and it’s making us sick and it’s hurting our non-human kin. Birds should never be in cages unless they are being cared for temporarily or the bird is permanently disabled. Most birds need other birds to feel safe and to build social networks. They are like us in so many ways; in their communication abilities, their love of aesthetics, and their bonds with each other. No being should be in a cage. But many recent events have either literally or metaphorically have us feeling trapped. Trapped by systems and beliefs that keep us small out of fear. But the Eight of Cups reminds us that all cages have a way out, because there has to be a way in. Try and get creative with your escape plans. Work with others who are in the same predicament. Send for help. Share resources and love. We got this, if we have each other.
