Responsible for the band’s diet, Marienne Lawes—better known to all as “Mouse”—first worked with Oasis in August 1994. “When I met the band, I gave them each a questionnaire to detail their food preferences and to break the ice. I asked them to draw a self-portrait. Noel drew God!” His responses typified the band’s dietary preferences. “Do you eat vegetables?” “No.” “Salads?” “No.” “Pasta?” “No.”
Asked to list his favourite meals, Noel wrote: “1. Full breakfast, 2. Fish and chips, 3. Steak and chips, 4. Meat curry, 5. Crisps.” Not to be outdone, Liam added “Sugar Puffs” and “Wheatabix [sic]” and, in response to Noel declaring “The Big Cheese” as his job on tour, Liam signed off as “Groupie.”
“I had to teach them about food,” Mouse says. “I was like their mum, ‘If you don’t eat your greens, you don’t get pudding.’ If I did too much posh food, Noel would have a word, but I changed their habits over time. By the end, Noel liked fresh grilled tuna and Liam loved fresh soup, especially pea and ham. They were never pampered. They’d eat with the crew and truck drivers. My motto was, ‘I feed bands, not egos.’ Every day I used to put a blackboard up for the menu with a Thought for the Day. One time, Noel wrote, ‘No one is good at everything, but everyone is good at something.’”
Mouse offered a simple selection in the band’s dressing room: a fruit platter, a bowl of crisps, dips, a big basket of chocolate mini-bars, a big bowl of mixed-up sweets, some chewing gum, and honey and lemon for Liam’s voice. “Posh bands would have meat and cheese platters and just stick fags in it, so it was all childlike stuff. That’s all they wanted.”
