The reason all “how to be a good D&D player” thinkpieces suck is they all jump straight to one of two extreme positions, either “the GM is your Lord and God and thou shalt obey” or “the GM is your dancing monkey, here’s how to be kind to your dancing money”, and literally none of them ever hit upon the basic idea that the GM is a fellow player and ought to be treated as such.
