somehow the most mind-blowing part of “there are young people who are adults now” to me is that there are people who didnt live through freedom fries. its possible that freedom fries colored my understanding of the W era more succinctly than anything else. i hope america dies soon

At the time, I was teaching la langue française in a conservative area. One of my more assholish students tried to make a thing of it, so I said “yes indeed I am a freedom teacher, would you like to hear about the Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen?”

I didn’t get out for another few years and it was pretty much hell the whole time.

Yes, it was a real thing. Yes, people actually took it seriously. And yes, there were people who actually did things like refusing to eat fries because they had “French” in the name or changing their salad dressing because “French dressing” was “unpatriotic.” It was wild.
