Yapping time 🥺 There might be some grammar mistakes or confusing parts because my English is pretty bad, so I had to use some translation tools to help me out
It's almost 5 or 6 AM here in my country, and instead of sleeping, I'm just going to start rambling then...
There are quite a few takes on Ares that I dislike, especially the one claiming he's the most hated god on Olympus. You really can't base that conclusion solely on one angry remark from Zeus in the Iliad, or a passage in the Dionysiaca about the bronze jar incident where Zeus supposedly turned a blind eye when Ares was captured.
Furthermore, using the Iliad itself as the primary source to prove that Ares is Zeus and Hera's most despised child doesn't entirely make sense.
While I'm on the subject, I don't really think Ares switched sides just for Apollo or Aphrodite. Yes, Apollo did provoke him to join the fray (even though Ares had previously promised to support Athena and Hera's faction, and Athena had stopped him from fighting, leading him to sit by the banks of the river Scamander). Moreover, if I remember correctly, both Aphrodite and Apollo framed Diomedes as someone who dared to defy the gods, and even Zeus himself:
Aphrodite: ‘Beloved brother, rescue me and give me your horses so I may come to Olympos where is the place of the immortals. I am in too much pain from the wound of a mortal's spear-stroke, Tydeus' son, who would fight now even against Zeus the father.’
Apollo: ‘Ares, Ares, manslaughtering, blood-stained, stormer of strong walls, is there no way you can go and hold back this man from the fighting, Tydeus' son, who would now do battle against Zeus father? Even now he stabbed in her hand by the wrist the lady of Kypros, and again, like more than a man, charged even against me.’
But who knows if that was just an excuse for Ares to disguise himself as Acamas and fight. I have a feeling he joined the battle partly because he is the very essence of the battlefield relentless, ceaseless motion. It's incredibly hard to force the personification of clashing swords and bloodshed to just sit still, at the very least, they should’ve let him in to be a cheerleader =)))))))))
And for that reason, Ares broke his promise to Athena and Hera. With Ares there, the Trojans were gaining the upper hand. But Athena couldn’t just swoop down, put on her Helm of Invisibility, and stab Ares to teach him a lesson, she had to formally ask for Zeus's permission first 💔
Hera: ‘Father Zeus, are you not angry with Ares for his violent acts, for killing so many and such good Akhaian warriors for no reason, and out of due order, to grieve me? And meanwhile Kypris and Apollon of the silver bow take their ease and their pleasure having let loose this maniac who knows nothing of justice. Father Zeus, would you be angry with me if I were to smite Ares with painful strokes and drive him out of the fighting?’
Zeus: ‘Go to it then, and set against him the spoiler Athene, who beyond all others is the one to visit harsh pains upon him.’
Once Zeus agreed that Ares needed to be punished, we all know what happened next : Diomedes went back into battle, Athena put on her invisible helmet, hopped onto the chariot, and guided Diomedes's hand to thrust the spear, dealing her brother an excruciatingly painful blow 💔
Ares then went up to complain to Zeus or depending on how you look at it, to reproach his own father. This only irritated Zeus even further, as he had literally just finished listening to Hera and Athena complaining and snitching on Ares.
Ares: ‘Father Zeus, are you not angry looking on these acts of violence? We who are gods forever have to endure the most horrible hurts, by each other's hatred, as we try to give favour to mortals. It is your fault we fight, since you brought forth this maniac daughter accursed, whose mind is fixed forever on unjust action. For all the rest, as many as are gods on Olympos, are obedient to you, and we all have rendered ourselves submissive. Yet you say nothing and you do nothing to check this girl, letting her go free, since yourself you begot this child of perdition. See now, the son of Tydeus, Diomedes the haughty, she has egged on to lash out in fury against the immortal gods. First he stabbed the Kyprian in the arm by the wrist. Then like something more than human he swept on even against me. But my swift feet took me out of the way. Otherwise I should long be lying there in pain among the stark dead men, or go living without strength because of the strokes of the bronze spear.’
What follows is the famous dialogue where everyone points out that Zeus called Ares his most hateful child. But what happened after that? Zeus didn't just leave Ares there to suffer in pain.
Zeus: "...And yet I will not long endure to see you in pain, since you are my child, and it was to me that your mother bore you..."
Even after scolding him, Zeus had Paeon heal his wounds. Hebe then bathed Ares and dressed him in fine clothes, and Zeus had Ares sit joyfully right beside him. I don't think anyone would happily let the person they hate the most sit right next to them.
Furthermore, in the Hymn to Delos, the main reason Hera hated Leto so much was that Leto was about to give birth to a son whom Zeus might love even more than Ares.
"Hera murmured terrible against all child-bearing women that bare children to Zeus, but especially against Leto, for that she only was to bear to Zeus a son dearer even than Ares..."
If Hera hated Ares the most, she wouldn't have cared about this. If Zeus hated Ares the most, then Apollo surpassing him slightly wouldn't even be worth mentioning. It's quite obvious that Ares was actually one of Zeus's beloved children (or, in my delulu mind, he was the secret favorite, just let me have this).
Zeus is like the kind of father who loves his child dearly but refuses to turn a blind eye or condone their misbehavior. That said, he has his own temper and is also a king, so his words can't always be gentle. But once the scolding is over, as long as the mistake wasn't too severe, they can still soften up and make amends.
It’s exactly like getting into a massive argument with your parents, only for them to cut up some fruit and bring it to your room later, or call you down for dinner =))))))))))
Just because I saw this in the middle of the night, I refused to go to sleep
