User Experience:
Access: Due to the location-based brief, we decided that instead of accomodating to all types of technology such an computers and ipads, we believed that mobile phones were the easiest for access. Our game screen resolution is designed to fit in any touch-screen phone ranging from Android phones to Oppo, Windows Phone, Google Phone and Apple from the iPhone 4 an upwards of those models.Â
Languages: Our application can be altered to fit 7 different languages. These choices were based off the statistics according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2007) 1. English (70%) 2. Mandarin (2.5%) 3. Arabic (1.4%) 4. Cantonese (1.2%) 5. Italian (1.2%) 6. French ( - ) 7. American/Canadian (Keyboard style/spelling)

Mini-Game Ideas:
QR/Barcode Scanner:Â The idea for this came from how in certain areas around sydney, rubbish and waste lying on the streets is a major issue. Areas on the virtual map will be tinted a blue colour where areas of the city have high rubbish scanning/throwing out. By using location services, the more people in a certain area scanning products, the bluer the section on the map, the higher usage of the scanner app. This should hopefully motivate people to pick up rubbish on the streets where there is no blue.
RubbishCrush: Similar to CandyCrush, instead of lollies there will be different types of rubbish rated on decomposition time, the longer the decomposition the more points you accumulate if you collect 3 or more in a row.
GreenRoom A virtual reality room where the objective is to change 10 aspects of the room in order to make it completely environmentally friendly. This could include: - Turning off power points - Turning off lights - Switching from air conditioning to opening the windows Each time a room is won, a new room is unlocked with bigger issues, this could change to a whole apartment, then house, then apartment block etc.
TrainTraveller The idea is based off the official Subway Surfer app, this is a mini-game unlocked only when travelling on a train or bus and involves location services so the players avatar must jump and duck through obstacles depending on which station the player is at at the time.
RunnerRunner: A Super Mario inspired mini-game where the players character avatar runs on a factory conveyor belt and has to jump on the top of electronic technology and collect (run through) easy-decompositional or environmentally friendly items. An understanding of which items are to be collected and destroyed will come from a trial-and-error learning system which means learning as they play which items are good for the environment and which ones are bad. Example: Destroy: - iPhones - plastic bags Collect: - KeepCups - Reusable water bottles - Tupperware container
Prototype:
Image 1: This display is the Interactive Mini-Game screen, the bottom left corner depicts the current score and highscore as well as a reset button for the game in case it does not go as planned.
Image 2: The pop-up notification is a positive âpro-movementâ type of notification whereby it allows the player to post what positive choice they made in the game rather than their score. For example, if the mini-game helped the virtual world reduce rubbish, the notification posted to their social media could say something like â(Name) reduced their rubbish intake by taking their own lunch to work in a reusable container!â
Image 3: In order to accumulate points, a barcode scanner enables the player to scan a barcode on their items that they place in the rubbish bin. This part of the application requires a trust that the player is not just scanning in order to gain points but really putting them in the bin.
Prototype:
Image 1: The login screen, with a username and password and the ability to log in via Facebook and Twitter. The application icon is depicted minimalist in the centre of the Screen.
Image 2: This is the sky-view game screen, the avatar in the centre is an example image and depicts exactly where the player is standing. The person icon in the bottom left hand corner is a street-view option.
Image 3: The third image depicts the drop down menu including Twitter and Facebook links, a âcommunityâ link, a message bank, a barcode scanner, back to home and sale (shop) links.
The Arctic is going through âan unprecedented transition in human history,â that will accelerate sea level rise and boost the frequency of extreme weather events, said the Arctic Report Card, released annually by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The region around the north pole âshows no sign of returning to the reliably frozen region it was decades ago,â it said.
Last year, winter sea ice fell to the smallest extent on record, and air temperatures reached the second warmest in modern times, said the peer-reviewed report compiled by 85 scientists from 12 nations.
Fewer heat records were shattered last year, compared to 2016. But in context, the trend was clear.
âThe magnitude and pace of the 21st century sea ice and surface ocean warming decline is unprecedented in at least the last 1,500 years and likely much longer,â said the report.
âThere are many strong signals that continue to indicate the Arctic environmental system has reached a ânew normal.ââ
The consequences of this continued warming are dire, according to co-author Jeremy Mathis, director of NOAAâs Arctic Research ProgramâŚ
âThese changes will impact all of our lives. They will mean living with more extreme weather events, paying higher food prices and dealing with the impacts of climate refugees.â
In-Game Information:
In-Game Information:
At the beginning of the game, players are provided with tutorial which gives the background of the game. This story-telling engages players and immerses them in their in-game world. They are given information on what their main goal is. For the first few levels, players are provided with helpers. The helper instructs players on what to do and how to do it. Similarly, there is a help button in the menu.
The line in the score bar increases with every point. When the players reach enough points to level up, the score bar goes green.
They also have friends bar in the menu of the game. This promotes a sense of familiarity and sociality. Similarly, players can collaborate with their friends if they are in the same location or car and get more points. It will come up with an alert for a âcarpool tollâ where you all the players gain points in a team effort.
Menu Systems:
Menu Systems:
Twitter Icon: this icon enables the individual to see what posts their friends are sharing on their twitter profiles, this is also where the player will view the posts they have shared.
Facebook Icon: similar to the twitter icon, this will be a âwallâ of posts that their friends are posting about.
People Icon: this is where the player can view their friends lists both from Twitter and facebook. They will be able to analyse scores and leaderboards from other peopleâs mini game scores.
Mail Icon: This is to view messages and chats in between the player and their friends.Â
Barcode Icon: This icon will lead you to the scanner page where the player can scan a barcode of an item which accumulates to points whereby they continue by throwing it in the bin.
Home Icon: This leads the player back to their in-game âhomeâ.
SALE Icon: This is an icon for the in-game shop that the player can choose to buy items for their virtual home.
The Icon in the lower right hand corner is the mini-game library. When the player wins a mini-game their game is stored in this section where the individual can go back and play their old mini-games and try and beat the score.
The icon in the lower left hand corner is the notification centre for all new information and actions that their friends and community have interacted with.
Look, Sound & Feel:
Sound Designs:
As the avatar is wandering through the online world and map, there will be no sound or music as an important part of gaming from our perspective is being able to listen to our own music. There will be sound effects for when a mini-game appears on the map as well as sounds for when a button is pressed or touched there will be an iOS10 *click* noise.
Look, Sound & Feel:
Narrative Structure: The approach to a narrative structure is through the addition of levelling and a scoreboard which changes the usersâ level throughout the game. Each level that rises means another step to creating a greener, cleaner world. Our story is that at this point in time, we are on a decline in the way the world tackles issues like global warming, rising pollution and landfill. The aim of the game is for each individual to create their own story in the online world that will in time promote their daily lifestyle choices and create a narrative in the outside world that leads to positive change.
This is the score symbol and the leveling bar on the game which depicts the stage in the game where you are.
Look, Sound & Feel:
Game play:
We want our game play to feel a lot like real life in the way that the avatar moves around the streets. There is an option for street-view where the third-person view follows the individuals avatar around the streets as they play. The mini-games will always have the avatar in the screen so that the player will be able to visualise their online world and therefore vision themselves carrying out the tasks in the game. Visualisation of a real-world action in the form of a game is important for our age group because it will enable them to view every day actions as ones that appear game-like and âfunâ. There will be a constant minimalist cartoon-like feel throughout the game as this is simple and does not create too much of a barrier between the player and the individual as a human being.
Market Consideration:
Market Consideration ;
Our area of market deliberation is through the use of ads and endorsements. The first tactic is simply one used by a majority of social networking connective apps. When you connect with your social media account, permission to post to your âtimelineâ will be activated. Giving the game the ability to post once you've achieved high goals. Therefore friends who don't have the app will have regular visibility of âachievementsâ and âawardsâ displayed on their feeds, leaving them curious and intrigued in the game.
The next idea is reaching out to celebrities who regularly use their social status to promote a healthier planet and contribute to stopping global warming. Celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio (actor), Jamie Oliver (chef), and Gisele Bundchen (model), to name a few, are big ambassadors for climate change. This form of advertising through celebrities that support the cause is free and an exceptional way to get a considerable outreach to their audience. This target audience is already eager to be involved in what their celebrity favourites are up too, therefore will promote the app in an extensive way.
Lastly to reach out and connect with the Australian government and request to link the app with the recycling and wastes ads they put on public transport, and commercials that frequently get noticed by the public.
By using many different outlets to freely promote the app, and with the use of repeating the promotion throughout the different markets, addresses the issue and the app in a communicative attitude. Presenting a vast allowance of reflective judgment, and allowing the audience to determine within themselves whether or not it has relevance to them (Messina 2007).
Platform ;
Mobile phones have been around since the early 1970s, but the ability to have an on hand, touchscreen device has only been around since 1992. Since then the market for mobile devices has continuously grown, with nearly every mobile owned being a touch screen (Mashable 2012).
As mobile phones can connect through a multitude of programmes, known as âcross-platform compatibilityâ (Flora et al 2014), it gives the user the ability to login with social media, and âconnect with friendsâ opening up a whole variety of accessibility through different networking forms. Hence by making our target platform to be mobile devices increases the chance of usability.
Game Elements:
Feedback Systems: The player gets positive feedback with each level up. This game mostly focuses on positive feedback instead of negative or comparative feedback. It is found that positive feedback boosts motivation to play games whereas the latter risks future game plays (Burgers et al, 2015). ⢠When the player collects enough points to level up, they get a message saying how they have progressed and contributed to the society. âCongrats! You are one step closer to making world a better placeâ ⢠When the player go past a location of high global warming (For instance, Kelloggâs factory), they get notified by âCode red: High level of Global Warmingâ.
Game Elements:
According to McGonigal, all games regardless of their genre and platform have four characteristic traits. These four defining traits are known as goals, rules, voluntary participation and feedback system. Our game prototype is based on the concept of making people aware of Global Warming. We want to motivate people to take action and acknowledge how serious this issue is. In this game, each action can affect players in-game world. The game takes place in a world severely affected by global warming. With every level up, the sky gets clearer and the environment gets greener. The maximum level that the player can get to is the level where global warming is diminished to the extent that it is no more a threat to mankind.
Rules: Players need to choose an avatar. They can choose the name of their avatar and customize their characteristics like hairstyle, outfits, skin color, etc. Â This is a location based game so the GPS needs to be on throughout the game. This game is about collecting points from activities you take part in throughout the day. The more points you collect, closer the player is to leveling up. Â Failing to collect points will result in getting stuck at the same level. Some actions get more points than others. For instance, the player scans random things like fruit peels, used tissues, etc. in the scanner. Some of the objects may get more points like plastic. Similarly, The more items you throw in the bin, the more you score. Â
Additionally, the players should be aware of their environment while playing this game. With every crash or injury, players lose points.
Game Synopsis & Objective:
Game Synopsis and Objective:
Title: Green Light
In Depth Description: The aim of our game is to accumulate points that in turn can be used to design their in-game avatars home. The player must reach point goals and when each goal is reached, certain aspects of the avatars environment change around him, (clearer sky, greener grass etc) (more ideas?)
Genre â
As the internet and connective devices grow, the ability to be joined with people and locations has never been as possible as it is today, especially with the use of global positioning systems (GPS). GPS locating, within games, is becoming more evident in the gaming world, opening up a whole range of elements to explore and develop (Hjorth 2011). With the ubiquity of mobile phones and the use of mobile games becoming more of an epidemic, they are classified âas an area of urban gamesâ (Hjorth 2011 p 360).
With the option of playing in third or first person screening, this is a mobile-operated, global positioning system, with socially interactive and environmentally friendly ideals. Due to the fact, almost all of the world have some form of a handheld device, we have decided to make the game solely downloadable via mobile devices (i.e. Android phones, Apple tablets etc). As you journey through the game the use of your location will magnify the way you experience the virtual world. Displaying real-life navigation properties, and incorporating them with the animated storyline, it will generate a multi-modal media escapade.
 Purpose â
As gaming is now apart of our way of life, scholars have coined the term pathological gaming, in which we are found to be dependant on the latest craze in the gaming sphere (Spekman et al 2013). Hence the purpose of our app is to seek prevalence in the gaming world, to get people to be conscious of the effects global warming is having on us and our ecosystem. It will display a multitude of ways in which you can make the earth a better place, with small simple activities that most people don't consider as a factor affecting. It will use playful game-like tactics to incorporate everyday tasks, like recycling and carpooling, in a reward like a manner, so people feel the need to be doing something that should already be done.
  Lengthy in-depth description â
The main idea of the game is to raise awareness about global warming and its effects on our environment. We are hoping that with this game it will get people to notice the effects more, and what they can to do prevent and lower the results of climate change, not just for us but our future generations too.
When you first download the app you are to create your profile, design your character, and name your avatar. You then have the option of logging in with your email or, as recommended, signing in with Facebook. When doing this it allows you to have easier access to connect with friends and earn higher points and rewards. The storyline is then displayed on the screen, depicting a slowly disintegrating earth due to global warming and climate change. Pictures of rubbish, pollution, toxic waste, dying wildlife, all flash upon the screen, with dramatic serious toned music playing in the background. Then, there is your avatar, flying across the screen clearing up the air, âyou can save the world, you WILL save the world!â Flashes on the screen as your avatar lands, and the option to start the game begins.
Through the duration of the game you will earn points through a reward system and gain higher abilities to unlock mini-games, and levels through completing environmentally friendly tasks. Such as recycling, carpooling, and creating healthy habits while destroying harmful industrial units. As you get higher up in the ranking system of the game you start to see a clearer sky, green grass, and more wildlife roaming around the world, as it is demonstrating the positive effects you are having within the environment.
With the social aspect of connecting with friends and completing mini-games with them, it also gives you the ability, to share your knowledge and insights on what you can do to âlevel upâ or in other words, help the environment. As though people will simply see this as a game, every task they complete to get rewards will actually be helping the environment in a proper manner.
6th December: Personal Assignment Brief
We believe that many aspects of gamers today indicate that a type of âcasualâ gaming is the easiest to put forth among the community. Hjorth expands on the idea of how location-based gaming with the inclusion of GPS technology redefines how place and locality are being seen among people. The ability to create a cartography of an online world that challenges an individual'sâ âeveryday conventions and routinesâ can allow for these actions to be hopefully mirrored in that personâs real-life.
5th December:
ANISHMA IN-GAME INFORMATION; information scenes (i.e. help centre, score counts ect.)
We decided the easiest and most time efficient way to complete this assignment would be to set smaller tasks dedicated to a particular date and discuss over facebook how we were to get to that goal. We set roles between the group and decided to allocate sections of the assignment to particular people. This is as follows:
