im begging the zutara fandom to ship with no regrets; i see so many posts by zutara shippers being like "i respect the canon but" or "the live action will probably follow the canon and that's okay but" and its like fuck the canon. lol zutara is better than the canon. ship that shit proudly. this fandom didn't last two decades because us og shippers cared about what bryke thought lol

I’m not in the ATLA fandom, but I think this goes for all shippers and casual enjoyers of media. You are absolutely allowed to have fun with fictional characters, the worlds they live in, and their relationships with one another. Everyone’s always second guessing themselves based on the canon of the show. Screw it, ship friggin Iroh and his goddamn tea leaves for all I care. People are always going to judge, so why keep contorting yourself for their gaze? Live your life, explore through fiction, and hey, maybe you’ll find out something new about yourself.

I shouldn’t have to preface that I’m not talking about shipping siblings or some crazy shit like that, so don’t try it.

A RANT about RAGATHA (and TADC in general)

I was disappointed with the handling of Ragatha throughout the entire run of TADC. For the record, I actually liked the ending. I thought it was sweet, I thought it was cute, and I was generally pleased with how it followed up on its themes of togetherness. That being said, I will never not be mad about Ragatha. The focus of the show is so focused on Jax that it blurs what made the show actually interesting at its inception. It was conceptualized as an ensemble show. Pomni being the reflective glass that could show us the innerworkings of the ensemble was brilliant, but underused.

See, this is what really kills me. Gangle got an episode, Kinger got an episode, Zooble a fraction of an episode, and then there's Ragatha. Poor, forgotten Ragatha. She got, hmmmm, maybe a third of one? She gets scenes, some few monologues describing her insecurities, but she is essentially isolated through the writing of the show. You know, the thing that the ending of the series emphasizes is the worst thing you can do to someone. Ragatha is an essential part to the narrative of the story. At least, that's what's portrayed from its foundations in the first episode. Ragatha is hiding who she is, just as Jax is, and if she wants to find acceptance and not further isolate herself from the group, she needs to be comfortable with showing who she really is. WE NEVER- I MEAN NEVER- GET A RESOLUTION TO THIS. Jax abstracts from his unwillingness to break down his walls. It would have been a wonderful contrast for Ragatha to survive from doing the opposite. Instead, we get a throwaway line of her saying, "It could have been me." Except it could have been anyone. Could we not have shown that more effectively? Why does that have to be implied and not a part of the larger narrative?

Ragatha is so underutilized in her own show, one that I thought was brilliant for the sheer fact of having including a character like her. I understand putting focus on Jax, I actually think it was somewhat necessary for the plot to unfold the way it did, but I wish the plot would have ALSO focused on Ragatha- Maybe even have her, Pomni, and Jax be the main focus overall. The show created a foil for one of its main characters, and then refused to use the traits of a foil effectively. It's because of this lack of use that the show feels disjointed and off balance.

That's really all I have to say. Again, I really do love TADC. I don't think I ever won't. That being said, it is flawed in many ways and I think it's important to acknowledge what is lacking, especially when it promised so much. Justice for my wife, Ragatha.

honestly i had a hard time deciding how to approach this, but i ultimately went with my gut instinct. fun fact: jax is based on someone i knew in highschool. i thought he was so pretty and mysterious when i first met him, but the moment he opened his mouth i felt something within my soul shrivel and die.
