Yoshitomo Nara mugshot, arrested for doodling graffiti at the Union Square subway station to point towards his art show in New York. He spent two days in the downtown jail, which he optimistically described as "a nice experience in my life," saying it was "like in the movies," a small space filled with all manner of people he would not otherwise meet.

Gerhard Richters Zyklus „Birkenau“ in der BLACK SUN Ausstellung

Der Gemälde-Zyklus trägt einen an unaussprechlichen Schrecken erinnernden Titel: „Birkenau“. Gerhard Richters Werk wurde von vier anonymen Fotografien inspiriert, die 1944 unter lebensbedrohlichen Umständen entstanden und so erschütternd wie umstritten sind. Nach einer erstmaligen Präsentation im Dresdner Albertinum gastiert der abstrakte Malerei-Zyklus „Birkenau“ in der Fondation Beyeler, wo er mit weiteren Werken Gerhard Richters zu sehen ist.

Im August 1944 gelingt es zwei Häftlingen in Auschwitz, Mitgliedern des sogenannten Sonderkommandos, das Grauen der Gaskammern fotografisch festzuhalten. Aufnahmen sind in den Konzentrationslagern strengstens untersagt, der Holocaust soll undokumentiert bleiben. Jene vier Aufnahmen können aus dem Lager geschmuggelt werden: es sind „vier Stücke Film, der Hölle entrissen“, die dem „Unvorstellbaren um jeden Preis eine Form“ geben.

Gerhard Richter malte erst die Fotografien grossformatig ab, um sie anschliessend in Rakel-Technik abstrakt zu übermalen. Nach der ersten Präsentation im Albertinum in Dresden sind die vier Leinwände derzeit in der Fondation Beyeler bis Mitte Januar zu sehen.
