[ LANTERNS ] - Lanterns shaped like flowers decorate a large table alongside bowls of strips of paper and writing utensils. Guests are instructed to write a wish on the piece of paper and then roll it into the rim of a lantern, and once finished, to set them into the water. The result of everyone’s wishes is a truly breath-taking sight of a hundred little lights on the ocean’s surface.

It seems like a good idea to Ike.

It's the kind of things normal siblings do together, right? At the very least, he thinks Mist would enjoy it. So, when he sees other people with their lanterns, he goes to find Mist.

"Have you seen the lantern thing?" Ike asks. "I thought it would be fun to do that together."

It's not often that the siblings find themselves at events such as this. Ike tends to avoid them, and they quickly become overbearing for Mist, but on the rare occasion that she's enjoying herself?

Well, darn it, she's gonna make Ike enjoy it too! (Or, try to.) It is even more surprising to have Ike suggest such a thing, though. And it would be perfect, if not for the fact that Mist had already sent out a lantern wish of her own.

Oh, jeez. How to let brothers down gently? Well, not that Ike would be too let down.

"Oh! Yes, we should definitely do this together!" But, she knows she'd rather not keep anything from Ike. "I just let sail a lantern, so I can help you figure it out. It'll be fun!"

Mist quickly nabs a nearby lantern, and presses it into his hands. It reminds her of another gift, though, and she slips a pearl bracelet from her wrist as well.

"Here you go. Oh, and here's my bracelet. You gotta enjoy the games too you know!"

[ RELAX ] - For those looking to take a breather, the cabana located a short ways from the ball’s epicenter might be the answer. Take a seat in the chairs lined up side-by-side on the porch and pour yourself a drink from the chilled wine bottle as you have a fine view of the ocean. A white hammock lies inside for those who want to recharge before jumping back into the fray.

It's not uncommon to find Rhys resting, especially at such a festive event. He's even poured himself a little of the wine and is eyeing one of the hammocks, out of the pure novelty of trying one, when he sees Mist. Rhys raises his hand to wave her over.

"Mist! How are you enjoying the ball?" Remembering something, he pauses and pulls at one of the starfish charms on his bracelet before offering it to her. "Here, take one."

"Hi Rhys!" Mist closes the gap between them with a hop and a skip. "Wow, you sure look like you're enjoying the ball, huh?"

She takes to a deck chair beside him, sandaled feet opting to curl up under her instead of stretching out. She'd be lying if she said she was tired of dancing, but well, her body clearly tired of something. Better to take a break now than the collapse on the dance floor! Rhys always had the right idea.

The bracelet slides directly onto her wrist, making a little clinking sound as it knocks on her pearl one. She holds out her hand to the sky, admiring the pair.

"Huh! They actually look pretty good together, I think! Thanks, Rhys!" She turns back to him. She can't help but smile.

A small oh! and Mist's hand disappears into her bag. An identical pearl bracelet procured, it's her turn to pass jewelery to Rhys.

"There! Now, we can match!"

Lene knew that the lanterns meant nothing. She wasn't an optimist or idealist at heart. Wishing on a paper lantern would not make your dreams come true. And yet she lingered at the edge of the water with her own, hoping, dreaming that somehow, it could make a difference.

She had made her way to this big ball on her own, but somehow still felt a little lost. A beautiful gown did not make a woman. And so she stared from her lantern to the water's edge, wondering what could make a difference.

The dancer decided to take a break and see who else was also making wishes when she encountered a girl, most likely also around her age, also with a light. Lene stops and stares for a moment. She seemed peaceful, somehow. Calm. 

"What are you wishing for?" The words came out of her mouth without thinking. Oh no! That's probably like so rude!  "Sorry, you don't have to answer," Lene chides herself. "I just couldn't help but wonder what types of things other folk want."

Attention fixed on her latern, Mist is a little jumpy when the girl calls out to her. Reflexively, she smiles, letting her serenity shine in the lanterns' glow.

"Oh, that's okay," she quickly says. It is not often that Mist will keep secrets during tender moments such as these, and she pivots, turning to Lene.

"Maybe this is a little childish, but I was wishing for the wellbeing of my family. I sort of... have a big family, I guess. So I worry. Even though maybe I shouldn't." She giggles awkwardly.

Her eyes turn back to the water, her wish floating among a sea of hopes. "It's a simple hope. But I think it's better to keep my wishes simple, right?" She looks down at her hands, fingers picking at one another idly.

"That way, they're more likely to come true!"

Cynthia was asleep when she hears someone at the door. It's late - very late. The room is pitch black. Cynthia reaches over and lights a candle, just for some kind of light. She's in a nightgown, hair down.

As Cynthia wakes up, she realises the urgency in Mist's words and voice. Something has gone wrong. She's in trouble. Cynthia leaps out of bed and opens the door, before yanking Mist inside and slamming the door shut behind them.

"What's wrong? Did someone try to break into your room or something?" Cynthia isn't exactly dressed to go kick bad-guy butt, but she would, for Mist.

Not that Mist can't defend herself but, you know, Cynthia remains the people's champion.

She goes to put on her boots. She really ought to keep a lance in here for emergencies. She can make do with her fists, right? Ooh, but this nightgown is too flimsy to really protect her, too.

Still. Anything for Mist.

Cynthia sweeps her inside the dark room, and Mist jolts at her sudden touch. Certainly, Cynthia is assertive, and to be as quick to respond to such a random calling is impressive in its own right; but right now, Mist just wants another warm body, not a soldier. Well, no, that's not true -- she wants another girl's company.

She spins around as Cynthia scrabbles around her in a hurry. "No, n-no, nothing like that," she says, hands up to stop her. She can't quite seem to catch her attention, though. "Cynthia, wait -- Cynthia!"

What could she say? 'I'm so horny I can't sleep?' What kind of manners were those?

She grabs out, clutching the pegasus knight by the arm. "Hold on! I'm here because I wanted to see you, dummy!"

She hopes that the dark of the night hides her blushing face, reddened and overheated. Stupid, stupid!

He is certain his smile remains just as gentle as it was before, but behind his eyes he can only feel envy. Despite it all, the turmoil that he keeps hidden behind his eyes, he chuckles. "Family is truly a wonderful thing. I hope to meet him one day in that case. If he's the type to speak more with his sword, it could be a wonderful learning experience." So not quite like her in appearance but...a name and a weapon and a company he'd been with. It would be easy enough to know someone like that when he saw him. "It's been quite nice...in truth I came here with little to begin with and even littler made it with me to the monastery but they've still accommodated me well...I suppose I'd just like to know I still have it in me." He knew he was capable enough. Lianna and Rowan had managed through such trouble and come out the other end against such insurmountable foe...the question was did he still have such prowess in his current state. "I'd like to have someone I taught win one of the tournaments often held at the training grounds before I formally applied for such a thing."

"Heh, maybe I can introduce you to him sometime." Mist smiles. Her family truly means the world to her, no matter how little of it remains, it still remains. "You guys would make a heck of a pair on the battlefield, I can already imagine!"

As for his experience, it occurs to Mist that not everyone has the luxury of coming to the monastery by choice. Could it be that Sir Darios had been found out on the side of the road, stricken of his status and belongings? Well, it was not for Mist to theorize about. The man's life was his own, and until he should want to share it, Mist would not pry. Well. She would not pry all that much.

She lights up at his suggestion. Winning a sword tournament sounds like an impossible task for a small thing like her. Her arms are toned muscle, but well, she's still nowehere as big as Titania, or Gatrie. But with enough resilience and determination...!

"That's a great idea! You sound like you have some training partners you'd recommend already, then?" Her inquisitive eyes bear into him.

His smile smooths over and he nods, nearly bowing before catching himself. "Thank you, Mist." "I'd be delighted to learn! Fodlan truly is a place rich with history and intrigue that continues to grow by the day, but I find people discount their homes too oft. Any accounts you have, I'd be happy to know. I might offer my own of my home in return." The ease of smile is not lost on him. He is certain a presence like hers will do well to keep people in good spirits. "Ike? Your brother I take it?" Context clues pointed to as much but that was...hmm, he had seen that name somewhere. "Haha, flashiness isn't the end all be all, certainly not with sword work." His mind immediately flashes to Rowan. Too many wasted movements. Too much eagerness that let too many clear openings. He could only hope that the man she spoke of wasn't so reckless. He stills for a moment and once more, he feels himself sheepish. "I've taught before, I certainly mind not if you'd have me." This time he does offer a small bow. "Actually...I've been contemplating if I might seek to begin working as a teacher's assistant but it's been such a long time, I worry I might not live up to the standards of Garreg Mach."

"Yeah, Ike is my older brother." She can't help but light up when she gets to talk about him. He is pretty extraordinary, as people go -- a goddess practically told him so. (Though, that same goddess had also told her so, too.)

"You'd never suspect that we're family, honestly. He's grown so tall now! But I guess it makes sense, considering our father, heh." Mist herself stood at a modest five feet and six inches. It had been a while since they'd stood side by side, but Ike could easily be the inverse. In fact, six feet and five inches might be too safe of an estimation. "He's not much for talk, though. Most of the time. Unless he has to. That's Ike for you. Plus, he got Mom's hair instead. I used to wish I got the same blue hair, but I like mine now."

Mist smiles, clutching her strap of her bag. Her family made warm her thoughts on this brisk day. She shakes her head, letting her mind settle once more.

"Aw, well you're a perfectly kind knight, Sir Darios!" Her words cut the air with joyful earnesty. "I think you'd make a great teacher. I don't know what this place is like for hiring, but you're a knight and a prince, you're probably amazing! Heh, you don't have to do it just for me though."

Tine looks away towards the exit so that it may be less obvious how red she is.

It's fine; she seems friendly, and it certainly wasn't an attack.

Some people just get caught up in the moment

That's all this is.

The other girl flips a page, so Tine has no choice but to return her mind to the predicament.

The issue is how Tine expected being used to staves being a requirement instead of an additional enchantment for your magic.

In the girl's words, there's a nostalgia and pride etched into the words.

"I understand back when I was from, we also cast healing magic using staves.  Something to hold sounds like a very good idea.

But I don't think we will find it in the library."

The girl clearly reached that conclusion by herself, so Tine isn't stricte necessary, but,

She wants to be a part of this now, doesn't she?

She's selfish; she wants affection, and it was just holding her hand but.

It could be made into something more meaningful, can't it?

"It's a bit late, but the training ground should be open.

 Maybe we can find something of the right weight there."

She raises from the seat, wincing as she pushes herself up from the desk.

She burned her fingertips, once again overzealous with touching the jewelry she made before it fully cooled.

Regardless, she reaches her hand out, smiling an invitation to be followed, maybe even be held again.

"Miss, I'm unsure how familiar you are with the layout.

May I guide you there?"

She wants to jump up into the air in celebration. Finally! Some real help for hands-on experience! Not that she minded the classrooms. Just, they were a bit stuffy to stay inside all the time, right?

"Lead the way! That'd be great!" She neatly folds up her notes and textbooks, shoving them into a small canvas bag at her side. Her brown cloak, draped over the bench, is quickly swung about her. The autumn winds had quickly turned chilly as winter approached, after all.

"This will be fun!" She grins. "I've never gone to the training grounds before... Do you go there often?"

"It's quite some ways away and there's not much to see. The neighboring country of Aytolis is far grander." Likely more stable these days all things considered. He truly could only hope that the people weren't giving the twins and Queen Yelena too much trouble. "I suppose in some sense, yes." It was with a smile that could not fade that he spoke. Her own enthusiasm for the shared profession, even if only temporary, bid him to leave out the last bit. "A band of mercenaries acting as ambassadors? You all truly must've gone to lengths few others did. I imagine people from all over travelled at your side?" To be chosen for that sort of thing was an honor most knights fought for, yet alone mercenary companies. He'd have to make note of the name. "It seems I need brush up on my history of other places as well," he chuckles keeping pace with her. The names weren't familiar but it wasn't difficult to put together a grander picture. "If that's the case, I'm certain the monastery will be a nice reprieve from so much travelling, at least until your class missions of course." Her silence speaks of experience but her composure betrays them being all bad. Her question brings about dilemma he still hadn't settled on. "It's a bit complicated these days..." To trail off and let his gaze settle on the greenhouse feels as if admitting defeat. "Prince Darios, of Gristonne, though I'd like to refrain from acknowledging as such often." To lie would be to imply there was anything worth hiding. "Much has happened and though it was difficult to part, my home and people rest in better hands than my own." A finger raises to his lips. "It's not a secret, though...I'd much rather take on the title of knight and be treated as such. I fear people wouldn't understand the situation." Try as he might to maintain it, smile wavers.

She understands. Really, she does; throwing away one's noble title, one's titles at all, must surely be freeing. Her father had done so, once; so too had a few of the other Greil Mercenaries. Her dear friend Marcia had been excited to, even. So it is of no big surprise for Mist to hear Darios's words.

"Alright, Sir Darios it is, then." She's perfectly content to not have to talk to a real noble at the moment. Not after only just setting foot in a place like this. Mist smiles up at him, hoping to maintain that which has slipped.

"Heh, I could tell you all about Tellius, if you want! Though, it's probably not as exciting as everything here." She gestures grandly at the high walls. "Fodlan is amazing, really! It seems so similar, but just the way everyone talks, it's just so different. I'm happy to be here, I think. Though, I'll be happier when I can slap Ike over the head for running off alone."

She means it in jest, but she is a little upset that Ike just up and left. His leadership was so comforting, for the company, and for her peace of mind. Certainly, she hadn't minded leading the mercenaries; but it just didn't feel right. (And, no way was she going to let Boyd take a turn at deputy. That bozo.)

She pivots the conversation, not wishing to hover too much on the topic that which she cannot change. She'd find Ike eventually, after all.

"I really want to learn proper swordsmanship, here," she starts, cyan eyes targeting the great blue at the horizon. "My father and my brother are amazing on the battlefield. I'm not bad but," she reddens a little, "I can afford to be better, is all. A smith from my company forged me a sword all for myself, but I still can't really do anything as flashy as Ike."

Determination flashes her eyes as she turns back to look at Darios. The sword at his side has absolutely not gone unnoticed.

"Maybe, you could be my teacher! Or, somethiing," Mist laughs lightly.

If the timeline he pieced together is all in the right order, that would mean Ike or Mist were still of an appropriate age to study here. Well. He’s not sure if there really is an age threshold here. The matter stands that if he should try seeking one of them, the Officer’s Academy would be a good place to start.

“I’m looking for a girl named Mist. Brown hair, blue eyes. Do you know anything?”

He’s taking a bit of a risk here. What if she became a totally different person than how he remembered her all those years ago? Greil is half-expecting to come to terms with it. After all, he left her when she needed him most.

However, when asking around, a couple of students from the Black Eagles seem to understand without the need of explaining. They had pointed out a direction for him, saying that she was last seen near the monastery’s greenhouse.

Sure enough, he sees her inside, busying herself with watering a bush of flowers. She’s a bit older, yet very much recognizable nonetheless. Does she notice him entering? Maybe. Maybe not. Still, he approaches from behind, though not too close. Don’t wanna give her a heart attack. “You’re enjoying your time here at the monastery, I take it?”

It's an ordinary day. Free from her duties, whether classes or other tasks, she finds herself once more in the newly reconstructed greenhouse. A particular patch of flowers had taken her fancy -- gold, yellow, oranges, reminiscent of a field long gone, and on gardens long trodden underfoot by Daein soldiers. So, she had made it her mission to check in on this colorful bunch every so often.

It's an ordinary day, and her father is alive.

Her ears must be playing tricks on her, she reasons. That voice, she'd last heard it as a 15 year old, no taller than a short spear. That voice, whose last words had been entrusted to Ike. Her jaw clenches, her skin pricks, her heart beats fast, too fast. She doesn't dare turn around for fear of being wrong but, well. It's not like her father actually could stand behind her, right?

Mist is a reasonable girl. She had shed a river of tears on that daybreak four years ago in Gallia. Long conversationgs with Titania and comforting silences with Ike had helped her out. She was over it. She knew what had transpired, and she had come to terms with it.

Unfortunately, despite everything -- she want's so desperately to believe her father is in the room with her now.

Fingers tense on the handle of the watering can. Her knuckles whitening from the effort. The inside of her lip is being bitten furiously, too. It's all she can do from snapping, on this quaint afternoon in the Garreg Mach greenhouse.

No; surely she must be dreaming.

"Father?" Mist tries out the words. She can't turn around just yet. "Are you really here?"

Tine certainly wasn't expecting someone to ask for her help.

She's tried to not let herself become distracted by other students

having been told of how much more effort it will take for her to master a new skill

the further along the domain she is.

Still, after composing herself from a hopefully quiet yelp of surprise, she faces the other person to assess the situation.

"Indeed, I am; let me see..."

She trails off, letting her attention be guided to the book.

"I see you trying to learn or perhaps relearn the restorative aspect of faith in the domain.

I am familiar with this textbook

It wasn't written with someone from another culture who would have different predispositions in mind.

I mean, I assume that because most students about our age have been here since the beginning of the year, and well, you seem quite uncomfortable with the environment."

She twirls with her bangs absentmindedly before she recognizes

"I'm sorry it is a relevant question, but my babbling wasn't. I can help you find better-suited literature since I'm pursuing similar goals, but I must also ask.

Is the struggle more with the memorization of the spell or the technique of casting?"

She finally pries her eyes away from the book to look at her conversation partner's expression, hers gentle, hoping to come off friendly and make this interaction into something more than just a passing question before coming back to her student.

"My name is Tine, and I'm slightly ahead of you in the studies; maybe repeating the fundamentals will aid me in my own progress, and it would be an honor to answer any of your further questions."

She's going to make sure the other girl will know anything she desires too.

At her surprised reaction, Mist sits up, taken aback. Maybe the girl is just a little jumpy, since the library is usually so quiet. I guess not everyone is very friendly here. "Oh, sorry for startling you!"

She listens to Tine attentively. So many smart people at this academy, and Mist was lucky enough to have found one! Maybe, they could even be friends, after... but, she's already thinking too far ahead.

When Tine finishes, she smiles widely, and takes her hands in her own.

"Thanks, Tine! You're so kind...!" Upon realizing her habit, she relinquishes the girl's hands, reddening. Truly, sometimes she was just too quick to care for others. "

"OK, let me think. I can remember the spell just fine, it's just..." Mist struggles to form the right words. Her eyebrows scrunch up, and she gives up, eventually.

"It's just, it won't come out!" Frustrated at her lack of specificity, she turns back to her page with a hmph! She taps the diagram, hands pointing palm-out towards the recipient of the spell.

"Back home, we cast heal using a staff. You should see our collection; some of them are so old, I used to think they once belonged to my mother! And oh, the staves that Rhys buys are always so pretty... but anyway, I need something to hold, I think." She lets out a groan of frustration and plants her face into the pages of the book.

Her defeated voice is muffled under a curtain of chestnut hair.

"Can you help with that?"

He offers a gentle chuckle. "My apologies then...Mist. Considering in the future it's likely you'll be tasked to go on missions even with those outside your house I suppose there's little harm in familiarity." It made it all the easier for people to work in arms. "They've many a noble blood both from Fodlan and elsewhere however. It may be best to adjust to what they prefer at times as well." Much as things blended, some habits were hard to kill entirely. He hesitates for a moment. Was his pace too fast? She recovered quick enough and he was not sure if worried eyes had looked off before she caught sight of them. "In a way, the monastery practically is. Though there is still the bustling towns to the south of it, there is little one could want for while here...even in the state of repairs its in now." He smiles, a gentle princely little thing. "No, originally I hail from Gristonne. Traveling all over or to and fro' from a few places?" He couldn't claim to have travelled as most did. "I've spent much my life aiming to be a bridge for my kingdom and our neighbors. It's comforting now to act as such on behalf of others."

Her eyes are busy mirroring the impeccable constuction of the monastery, but her ears are attentive to her guide.

"Gristonne? I've never heard of the place," Mist admits. Frankly, there are many places she's never heard of; one more to the tally is always nice. Tellius is a big place, but the world beyond? Just unfathomly vast. It makes her head spin.

"So you're like an ambassador, then? That's actually kind of what my group did, for a bit!" Happy to alight on a topic that seems more common to the both of them, eyes turn back to look at Darios.

"The Greil Mercenaries - that's the group I live with - helped bring the continent together, kind of. Because well, we helped our friend the Queen of Crimea, and we mended ties with Gallia, and we stayed in Begnion, and then Daein helped us, then..." Once more, her mouth moves far faster than her train of thought. She stops for a moment, stumped, letting her brain catch up. "Heh, we get around a lot, I guess," she concludes sheepishly.

As for Dario's comment about nobles and commoners schooling togther... Mist remains quiet. She's seen hoity-toity nobles. She's supped with them, she's cooked with them (well, Elincia at least) - they're not so bad! But, Mist isn't so naive as to think that all nobles are as nice as Elincia, Pelleas, or Sanaki. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't a little worried; but, there's nothing she could do about it now, so there's no use worrying.

She is curious about his mentioning it, though. The question comes easily, with genuine curiosity.

"Are you a noble where you are from, Sir Darios?"

When they were back at the mercenaries' home base, she could find some way to distract herself, even in her down time. The best way around it was usually to pick some sort of mundane task, and just keep chugging along. Forget about it. Mending a pair of pants. Preparing supper early. Cleaning the heal staves.

It's never gotten this...distracting before. It's a boiling feeling, a melting, and itch that is simply too out of reach to scratch. Friction with her smallclothes had been miserable, but rubbing against her pillow had helped leaven the feeling. Beyond that... Mist was out of ideas. Just what did her body want from her??? And, it is not as if Titania is here to ask these sorts of questions.

Titania had been every bit the mother she needed, growing up. There were too many differences that the boys in the company just didn't seem to get. It was nice knowing that she wasn't alone.

Now, she ached. Something's gotta give.

Cynthia is a little older. Surely she knows how to help with this feeling. There's got to be something. If not, even just talking to a friend should help calm her hormones. Anything to get Mist out of rolling in her sheets in agony, alone.

Her quarters are on the floor above. Only one flight of stairs away. She could make it that far, she thinks.

She knocks on the door hurriedly. "Psst. Cynthia," she calls. It's late, she knows, but she raps again on the door insistently. "Can I come in? I don't want to be alone right now."

The feeling that ebbs, flows forward strongly once more. Mist groans, and her legs clench involulntarily. Embarassed, she squeaks out, "...please?"

The cramped, cluttered library burned bright with studies of students and faculty alike. Ornamental candelabras offered bright clarity to the texts being poured over, washing the burgundy darkness in brighter tones, here and there. Among the tables, a brown haired girl with bright blue eyes stared miserably at the pages of her tome.

It's not like magic was foreign to her -- Rhys had made sure that her skills were absolutely up to par. The storeroom of the Greil Mercenaries had long been home to Soren's tomes, various magical items, and numerous staves. She knew how to handle them with care. Her old healing staves from the war with Begnion had become a comfort in her grip. But casting magic without a tome nor a staff was just so difficult.

It was the atmosphere, surely. After all , Mist knew little of the lives of scholars, let alone any sort of formal education. Her father and Titania had taught her mostly everything; the rest of the company had helped fill out any spots still left blank. Learning from a book just felt... stiff.

With an exasperated sigh, she leaned back in her chair in defeat. After waiting a beat, she leaned forward again, intent on another go at understanding, but...

 He understood the reasons he was tasked with offering the tours. Easy enough to understand - this place was certainly no dingy war camp. She follows him quietly, eyes wide to the grand architecture.

When he turns to her, she can feel her cheeks warm, slightly. Normally, she is the one that is to be treated like a sword, a guard, a mercenary. To have a stranger act as if she is someone of station was baffling. Once, she might have laughed in his face; now, Mist just makes a toothy smile.

"Oh, there's no need for such formalities!"

It reminds her of how things were after they reclaimed Crimea. Heroes, for a week.

"Yes, the Black Eagles house," she repeats. Stumbling on uneven cobblestones, she lets out a peep in surprise. But she recovers quickly, continuing on like nothing happened. Hopefully, the tall, dark man didn't notice. "They seem friendly. I haven't met them, yet."

She keeps up with his pace, despite their height difference. Questions brim from behind her lips, but she's content with the mostly-silence going on, currently. It wasn't like the Greil Mercs were much for talk, on the road. At least not largely.

"This place is a wonder," she pipes up. "The long lines of dormitories seem to go on forever. It's like its own city!" Her voice trails off in wonder.

"You're not from here, are you, Sir Darios? I'm from Crimea, but I'm used to travel."
