How do you expect shuls to keep running? It takes money to maintain a building and the rabbi (and chazzan if you have one) needs a living wage.

I will say that prices should be on a sliding scale for struggling members, and no one should be demanding a membership card or whatever on entry. A synagogue should be open to any Jew who needs a place to pray. But if you’ve chosen a shul to attend regularly, you should buy a membership, and donate on High Holidays.

And it sure as hell ain’t a shande far di goyim—they got collection plates instead of membership fees. Same problem, different solution.

I recall some people complaining about being required to pay membership dues a while back. And y’know what, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a few synagogues out there who are really shitty about dues, every group has its assholes after all. But I’ve lived all over this country, gone to many different shuls, and I have never encountered one that didn’t have negotiable rates for poorer members, complete with promises to keep such discussions private so that the members aren’t humiliated by asking for help. Hell, I’ve been one of those members, and all it took was a private conversation with the rabbi. And while events outside of regular davening usually charge for tickets, the price is always nominal, it’s clear that the charge is to cover expenses. How does anon expect a synagogue to function without money for expenses?

Whoa those Orthodox Shuls that aren't asking for membership dues must have large and generous populations... If what anon is saying is the truth. Sometimes you have a tiny population and if you didn't have membership dues you wouldn't have necessary parts of Jewish life like the Chevra Kadisha, or a Rabbi not to put too fine a point on it.

Any Shul, or Jewish organisation will have a means to negotiate if you're struggling financially but require continued access to services.
