Merlin sat on the bench in Camelot and watched the pigeons.
The birds mostly stuck to the rocky cliffs by the sea, but not all: some lived in the city itself, some out in the farms. In quieter moments, he often found himself gazing at them as they toddled and flapped around the dovecote on the quieter side of the castle. The man who took care of them was gentle and kind, cradling the lost and clueless birds in his tender palms. Always he had what they sought - food, shelter, love. He swept their nooks and provided for them, trained and prepared them for their work, whatever that may be. Though it was his job to keep them, though it was only his duty, the man loved the birds very much. It was plain to see in the way he called for them, the way he watched them bumbling around the grounds, the care with which he kept them, even when they were being difficult.
Arthur’s shadow on the ground gave away his tactic before he could sneak up and scare Merlin. The birds fluttered off as the servant stood to greet his King - by returning the presumed favour and tackling him to the ground. Though it were their jobs to keep each other, though it was only their duty, it was clear in the way they called each other that they each loved the other very much.

The golden dove
The golden dove is more often heard than seen, despite its striking color. It makes sounds akin to growling, snoring, or the barking of a dog. They are native to Fiji, and relatively small doves, measuring in around 20cm. The species exhibits pretty stark sexual dimorphism - the male golden dove is golden yellow and nearly iridescent due to the elongated shape of its feathers, but the female is a LOVELY green!
I love her. Green is one of my favorite colors and this is such a beautiful green bird! Golden dove with the sweetest greenest plumage.
Suspicious and adorable!
