The light in this scene is SO interesting. Many times in the sequel trilogy we’ve seen Ben’s face only partly lit, or covered in darkness (ie. the moment he kills Han). Here, however, he starts out mostly in shadow but as he steps forward, we see shifting, mottled light sliding like scales across his face. And as he speaks the words “Yes, I am [a monster]”, he’s covered in alternating bands of light and dark.

Interior lighting in movies is always a deliberate choice and not an accident: it’s done a certain way to reveal, to conceal, to create a sense of mood and atmosphere – and in films like Star Wars which are literally ABOUT the struggle between the Light and the Dark, it’s also symbolic. I believe this is the first time we’ve seen Ben lit in such a way as to show not merely that he is divided between light and darkness, but that the Light and Dark parts of him are tangled and interwoven with one another as well.

Ben Solo spent his whole childhood and adolescence trying to stay in the Light, but the Darkness inside him kept growing until even Luke lost hope and only Snoke would have him. Then he tried desperately to be all Dark, but to Snoke’s disgust he couldn’t do that either – despite taking what should have been the ultimate step of killing his own father, Ben still feels the pull to the Light. He’s a mess of internal struggles and self-contradictions, a shambling Frankensith abomination, neither fish nor flesh nor good red herring. So when Rey calls him a monster, what else can he do but agree with her? And the spots and stripes of light that cover his face in that moment echo the truth of that sentiment as well.

Yet at the same time, it’s impossible not to see how handsome Ben is. Compared to the scene where he first meets with Snoke, where he has huge dark circles under his eyes and looks battered, exhausted and unkempt, he’s beautifully groomed here, hair soft and eyes luminous. From the first moment we see him with his back to the camera he looks every inch the Dark Philosopher-Prince gravely surveying his kingdom, not some wild beast or savage berserker at all. So when he tells Rey she’s right to call him a monster, she is visibly taken aback – because she can see he believes what he’s saying, and yet at the same moment she realizes (and I’m not making this up: you can see it in Daisy Ridley’s face) that she no longer believes it.

The Last Jedi is so smart, and every part of it is so well put together. I can’t get over it.
