A warmth was spreading through him that had nothing to do with the sunlight; a tight obstruction in his chest seemed to be dissolving. He knew that Ron and Hermione were more shocked than they were letting on, but the mere fact that they were still there on either side of him, speaking bracing words of comfort, not shrinking from him as though he were contaminated or dangerous, was worth more than he could ever tell them. “You see Sirius talking to me there? He’s asking me to come and live with him. When we free him, I’ll never have to go back to the Dursley’s. It’ll just be me and him. We could live in the country, some place you can see the sky. I think he’ll like that after all those years in Azkaban. ”

What he really wanted (and it felt almost shameful to admit it to himself) was someone like — someone like a parent: : an adult wizard whose advice he could ask without feeling stupid, someone who cared about him, who had had experience of Dark Magic… And then the solution came to him. It was so simple, and so obvious, that he couldn’t believe it had taken so long — Sirius.

Lockhart ended up losing all of his own memories when his attempted Memory Charm backfired while using Ron Weasley’s broken wand. He then ended up in St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries for permanent spell damage. The credits scene, however, revealed that the former celeb wrote another book, Who Am I? - presumably his last. An advertisement for Who Am I? could be seen in the window of Flourish & Blotts, with a picture of Gilderoy in a straitjacket. The scene didn’t reveal Lockhart’s final fate, but it was highly significant since it remains as the only legitimate credits scene in Harry Potter franchise history.
