If WWX wrote a book, it would be a twenty volume extremely over the top and surprisingly non-explicit love story where the protagonist falls into a coma twice and the main love interest has to hide from their evil look alike cousin by faking his death in pt. 13. He'd start out writing it "ironically" and then end up getting unexpectedly invested, lose a couple of plotlines in the process and make up for it by adding so many dramatic twists and reveals that no one can keep up. His pen name would either be a pun or something so over the top and ridiculous, everyone immediately recognizes it's him.

If LWJ wrote a book, it would be highly explicit noncon smut under the pen name Wangji. No one would ever even guess it's him.

One of my favorite subtle moments of MDZS that I never see anyone else talk about is that section near the beginning of the book, during the Mo Manor arc, where WWX makes the active decision to help the Lan juniors

Because he takes a moment to think about it and articulates, for possibly the only time in the book (the only time I recall anyway), that he has valid reasons to hate the Lan sect - to the point that it would make sense for him to seek retribution.

The Lans were part of the ambush at Qiongqi Pass. The Lans celebrated Wen Qing and Wen Ning (really just Wen Qing but wwx doesn't know this) being burned and their ashes scattered so they could never reincarnate. The Lans declared war on WWX and the people under his protection. They participated in the raid on the burial mounds, slaughtering the elderly and the young (as far as wwx is aware. He doesn't know a-yuan was rescued) and drove wwx to his own death.

And for just that brief moment at the beginning of the book, before we the reader know any of the context, he acknowledges this. And we see him consider leaving. He could just walk away from Mo Manor. He wouldn't even be hurting anyone himself, he'd just be removing himself from the situation, leaving them to die.

But he doesn't. Because he decides that the juniors aren't responsible for the wrongdoings of their elders. They were just children when died. They've done him no wrong. So, at risk to himself, he jumps in to help.

Which, on it's own, isn't actually a huge thing? At this point in the book we still think he's a villain. So in the moment we go "so he draws the line at harming teenagers. That's interesting. Good to know" and we move on

But in retrospect? Even though WWX insinuates that he's ONLY helping the Lan juniors because they're young, and it would be a completely different story if they were adults, THIS IS NOT TRUE.

In fact, during the second raid on the burial mounds? The cultivation world AGAIN calls for his head on a platter. They blame him for things he didn't do. And then they're powerless. Powerless and under attack. and once again, wwx could just. Go. Just like at Mo Manor. Lwj still has his cultivation and his sword so they could just fly away.

But they stay. And wwx doesn't just choose to fight, he paints a lure flag on his chest and presents himself as bait. He puts his life on the line to save a group of people who celebrated his death and would happily see him dead again

So yeah. I love that moment at the beginning. He was summoned back from the dead to get revenge for Mo Xuanyu. He acknowledges that he has fair reason to seek revenge of his own. And in that moment, he tells himself that he's only helping because those teenagers, specifically, are innocent. And if they weren't teenagers he'd let them die in revenge. But he wouldn't. When put to the test he DOESN'T. Because when when Mo Xuanyu summoned the most evil person he could think of, a demon sure to seek revenge, he summoned the wrong man

I can't imagine how he'd feel once he got to the end and realized he'd let A-yuan die at the beginning - his compassion in helping the Lan juniors saved someone precious and dear to him, unknowingly. Which is what he deserves.

This actually ties into a BIG critique of Confuscianist theory and ancient Chinese justice that mxtx actively criticizes in her narrative, the idea of 父债子还 (Fù zhài zǐ huán) which translates to "the son must pay for the sins of the father" - the idea that the rest of a family is as responsible as the person who committed the crime and to get rid of a rotten apple they throw out the whole bunch. It was a big thing in ancient times and a reason for atrocities such as family annihilation during wars or judicial action - a big part of the novel is how mxtx directly criticizes that as being unfair and cruel. Having her main character say this in the first arc was actually HUGE considering the rest of the novel's plotline with the Wen and WWX's entire arc where we learn how he was punished for going against the grain and believing innocents should not be held responsible for the crimes of their loved ones.

Genuinely one of my least favourite fanon things that people often believe (or just say) about MDZS is the idea that Lan Wangji was waiting for Wei Wuxian in those thirteen years. Like, I know it's fun for jokes and all but one of the most crushing parts about all of that time is that Wei Wuxian literally was dead for thirteen years and there was literally no conceivable hope of him returning.

Like, by no means am I trying to weigh up the MXTX love interests' separation periods (as I like to think of them), but Hua Cheng had hope that he would find Xie Lian - he had so much hope that he actively searched for eight hundred years for him before he found him. Luo Binghe was able to bring Shen Qingqiu back, was in the midst of doing so when the mushroom body situation happen and then (while it wasn't Luo Binghe who did it) did bring him back.

Wei Wuxian died. Like straight up, no coming back, impossible to see him again, died. And I sometimes feel like saying that Lan Wangji was waiting kind of undermines the fact that this was a soul-crushing thing, and this was just going to be the rest of his life. There literally was no fucking shot of Wei Wuxian coming back in anyone's even remote comprehension, and the fact that he did come back was a fucking miracle in and of itself.

Lan Wangji mourned for those thirteen years. Hua Cheng searched, Luo Binghe (it's been a while so call me out if I'm wrong) was almost in denial over Shen Qingqiu's death even though he comprehended the sacrifice so he planned, but Lan Wangji mourned, and was going to mourn for the rest of his life. He just had to get used to the fact that he would never, ever get to see the love of his life again. There wasn't even a body to bury. It was just the memories and the gradual, slow descent of those memories disappearing with aging.

ALSO now that I'm thinking about it, the fact that he couldn't even talk to anyone else about it. Obviously, there's this whole thing of memories being kept alive through like sharing and talking about them, but Wei Wuxian cemented himself as basically a taboo subject. A monster who is only talked about to scare people or to curse out his name. Those who remember him can't or won't talk about him for one reason or another, and that means that Lan Wangji is left all alone, mourning someone who nobody even cares to talk about, and that will be the rest of his life. He has come to terms with the fact that he will die with the faint memory of Wei Wuxian's smile and that's all.

And, once again, this isn't trying to make a competition out of the separation periods, I could just as easily talk about how Hua Cheng's despair of not being able to find Xie Lian but knowing that he is alive somewhere (or is he? Has he gone? Faded away? Is Hua Cheng just looking for a memory?). I could talk about that desperation that Luo Binghe felt at losing the only person he had ever loved and been loved by, who had sacrificed himself to save him when he needed him most, who gave so many mixed signals, and then needing to get him back by any means necessary. But this post was borne of me being tired of the 'waiting' label being applied to Lan Wangji's mourning period.

Wei Wuxian was never, ever meant to come back. Lan Wangji was going to spend the rest of his life mourning a man who nobody else would ever talk about, memories fading until it was hard to pick apart what was actual memory and what was just his idealistic daydreams. Do you think he was waiting to die, sometimes? He never would, but do you think he just...passively waited for it sometimes, when he was alone and holding those few small reminders of the man he gave his heart to? Who he failed? Anyway. Lan Wangji just makes me so very sad and so very sick and I love him dearly.

Does anyone else get emotional thinking about how LWJ and WWX were not a couple when WWX died, and in fact rarely saw each other and had very little involvement in each other's lives?

So when LWJ spent 13 years alone, he wasn't mourning the loss of a lover or a change to his daily life, he was just. Mourning a good man? Mourning that WWX didn't exist somewhere in the world. Regretting his own lack of action and living every day knowing that the rules he believed in, the society he was a part of, would destroy a light as bright as WWX's in fear. In jealousy.

Just. I know LWJ was in love with him, so of course WWX's death was devastating. But I think it's so important to LWJ's narrative that he didn't know WWX would ever return his feelings. He had no idea that they would be married some day. So in his grief he really wasn't mourning their future together, he was pure and simple mourning WWX's loss to the world. And that hits me hard

Naruto is far more aware of the dark underbelly of being a ninja than Shikamaru or Sakura, since Shikamaru is actively pro-village and Sakura doesn’t have any developed political thoughts, while Naruto sought out and questioned a known terrorist to hear out his views and even sought to understand Sasuke. He hears out Nagato’s thoughts on how nearly everyone in the village is complicit in violence against smaller nations (since the village is like 90% military) and agrees with him, although his “solution” is lackluster. I wasn’t thrilled with his character arc but he definitely was more politically aware than Shikamaru or Sakura. Also, he was targeted and abused by countless adults in the village while Shikamaru and Sakura are two of the most sheltered and privileged characters in the series, which by default makes them less exposed to the dark underbelly of the village in general, even if they kill people and Naruto doesn’t (well, he doesn’t kill a named character, he does kill one mook) They never question the village on a fundamental level like he does.

I do think Naruto in general became a shill and wasn’t thrilled with his character development or Nagato’s conversion but I don’t think he’s less aware than Shikamaru or Sakura, especially since he’s not opposed to killing as a rule and often has killing intent. Not arguing btw just my thoughts since this is an interesting set of tweets
