Quiet days were rare and precious things and so when Natasha got the chance she took full advantage of it. Today was a nice day, good for being outdoors, a walk in the park sort of day and that was exactly what she was doing when a commotion caught her attention.
“Great. Now what?”
The city of New York was still healing, still getting back on its feet after Loki’s attempt to be king of the mountain. Everywhere there were still signs, hints of what had happened and Natasha ignored them for her own sanity. She had been in the thick of it, she didn’t need to notice the constant physical reminders she had enough of those in her head.
And then she saw the source of the commotion.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Maybe she was dreaming, maybe this was a nightmare. For the heck of it she actually did pinch herself and simply frowned when it hurt. Damn. Well time to address the problem.
“You have a lot of nerve.” She moved towards him, hand near the gun she always carried. She didn’t go anywhere unarmed. For that matter, “shouldn’t you be locked up somewhere?” She knew her misgivings about letting Thor take him to Asgard had been well founded now. But locking him up and throwing away the key could be easily remedied.
At the mention of being locked up Loki visibly flinched but a feral grin soon came onto his face. He had gotten caught now and he supposed the best thing to do was to put a brave face on things. He narrowed his eyes and then cleared his throat. “I’ve been punished most thoroughly.” He spoke his voice was like ice and rage built behind his eyes. His gaze flickered around the city and he tensed for a moment. “Didn’t Prince Thor tell you what they did?” He asked his voice was more curious than anything else. He wasn’t going to tell her right away what had happened but he felt a compulsion to do so. The anger died from his eyes to be replaced by a haunted look.
He moved so he was a little way back from her but not enough to cause her to shoot him or to think he was going to run. “Perhaps I should tell you what they did? Perhaps that would sooth your heart.” He spoke. His voice was calm but his hands were clenched into fists. His breathing was even but only just so. Thanks to the punishments he’d endured his sanity wasn’t the best. He was close to falling into mania or some deep melancholia. “They let the dwarves sew my lips shut...again” He said. His fingers brushed his lips and the glamour he used broke to reveal the scarring to his mouth. His words seemed to hang in the air like burning acid. “I suppose I had it coming but the rest of my punishment was cruel.” He spoke evenly.
He looked at Natasha and then stepped forward his hand coming to grasp her chin as he let his eyes fix on hers. “Imagine the worst pain you’ve experienced in your life. Multiply it and mix in overwhelming grief and heartache.” He spoke his voice was dull. He backed away once more and he smirked. “I would tell you the rest of what they did but I’m not feeling generous enough.” He spoke his voice was now more normal but his eyes still contained a haunted look. “So tell me my dear Spider. Did you miss me?” He asked with a smirk.
