( samson ).
“Oh that’s all right, sugar. I ain’t fussy bout a little one cryin’.” Samson made his way up to the mother and her daughter as the latter slept, smiling faintly at the little one in her bed. “Ain’t she jus’ precious?” The face of new life was a rare thing for the older man, a rare thing he wished he’d seen more of. But the business of death and dealing said death never gave him much time for the tiny ones. He probably had a child somewhere, but they were better off not knowin’ him. Most people were better off not knowin’ him.
He turned to mama, Noa, and he put his thumbs in his belt before shaking his head. “I don’t remember my own teethin’, but I heard it was hell from my ma and pa before their passin’. They at least let me know what a terror I was as a babe.” He glanced down for a moment before nodding.
“Yes, mama. I’d be happy to help you with gatherin’ whatever you need. Lead the way, and we’ll be done faster’n you can count to 10.”
“you’re doin’ better’n me then.” noa offered him an amused smile. truly, angelita wasn’t much of a fussy girl, but when she cut her teeth or struck a fever, the girl let it be known to the entirety of the wolf’s point wilderness. “pobrecita.” she coos to angelita as she closes the flap of the tent. “she’s precious, but she’s real angry at that tooth. too bad she isn’t old enough to understand that that the more teeth she gets the better food she can eat.” and the happier noa would be without having to breastfeed any longer.
“oh, you were a terror? as in you’ve somehow grown out of it and they only told you to draw the comparison?” noa had heard all her life what a gentle baby she’d been. if her parents had asked her younger sisters, she was certain the girls would’ve protested.
“thank you, samson.” it was better to have some company in the wilderness. she was by no means helpless, a quality which allowed her a varied role in the camp despite her motherhood. no one treated noa osambela de luna like a damsel in distress despite her quite nature or the softness with which she treated her sweet babe. “there’s some dry trees and pines down this way that might serve as good kindlin’ that i spotted the other morning.”
( minnie ).
“oh, she’s alright.” minnie rubbed the remained of the sandman’s gifts from her eyes as she plopped down and stretched her legs out. in truth, the kid was hardly to blame for her short slumbers. no, she got to call her lack of sleep “natural”; it allowed minnie to claim the title of an early riser. even if it was the kid – the young woman couldn’t bring herself to blame the child ever – it hadn’t signed up for this.
“how’s the mom? you’re not cuttin’ any teeth, are ya?” a feeble attempt at a joke, not even minnie laughed. a small smile, maybe. “and i’ll take care of it,” she waved away the concept of noa doing anything but sitting down and taking care of her little one. “you just stay here, yeah?” it wasn’t as though someone was gonna come and get her this early in the morning – so she figured she was safe. “i’ll be right back.”
“thank you.” noa replied, grateful for the kindness, but curious if it was offered only out of sympathy to her situation. it seemed most of the camp were unable to sleep soundly without a belly full of liquor and she lacked the luxury of overindulging in the drink.
“no, i already cut my teeth on outlawin’ ‘fore i ever came across these folks.” noa shot her a crooked grin as she smoothed her dark waves back into a more manageable braid--teasing the ends gently with nimble fingers in hopes of keeping it somewhat in place. “no, i insist.” there was no way she would be accused of loafing by her campmates. there were some days where noa would happily stay in bed all day, but she would not suffer a rumor to be spread that she was taking advantage of the best among thieves. “i meant to stretch my legs anyhow.”
( mami ).
angelita looked cute. she always did. just about any look she had looked utterly adorable and instantly mami’s heart grew warm at the sight. she could imagine things were rather tough for noa. she rode in here with a broken heart, a swollen belly; no home, no more family. death was riding on her back with blazing saddles and mami knew that all quite well. women of betrayal at the hands of men was a strong thing to bond over, even if mami never spoke of her own bitterness towards them.
but on the other hand. having her baby by her side in the moment when her hunger gets the better of her feels like a slap to the face. just because she has a child means she gets special treatment? what about the men who spend all day exerting themselves trying to get the food for them all to eat? what about mami herself? who spends few moments actually to herself because she’s busy keeping everyone alive? she doesn’t pick at the scraps. these were tough times for everyone. sympathy for noa runs deep with bitterness and she’s constantly teetering back and forth. maybe if there wasn’t blood up to her elbows and she was already particularly stressed over the whispers of the weeks to come, she’d be more docile with her hound companion.
today she was caught in a void between.
“i’d happily do it with your daughter elsewhere.” she says plainly, her eyes back to running the knife under the flesh of the beast, a swift motion as she left out a sigh. “take one.” she finally caves. “but i have this under control.” and if her arms were covered in crimson, she might think to pinch the cheeks of angelita and coo, but she couldn’t, so she kept her eyes down. “there’s some fresh pelts by my tent you could make something for angelita. rabbit suits her well.” she cracks a smile, albeit small, to show some sign of solidarity.
mami meant a lot to noa, but there was an unspoken tension between them. it she had taken the time to look at it, head on--without the filter of sorority she bore for the woman--she might’ve seen more clearly the pain that her motherhood wrought upon the other woman. mami was a good woman, hearty and considerate, but she was still a woman. it was she whom noa trusted most with angelita.
it was that same woman she would entrust with angelita’s life if god ever decided to send death back to claim her and leave her sweet daughter an orphan. there was no one else, far as she was concerned, who was up for the task and--though the men doted on angelita as surely as the women--a girl needed a mother more than anything in this world. she only hoped mami knew, without noa having told her, should the time come because the request always seemed to die in her throat before the words ever come to pass.
noa doesn’t laugh at the statement, though she thinks it’s an approximation of a joke or else the embodiment of some unspoken frustration mami has yet to take out on the carcass before her. she knows better than to ask are you sure? when offered the morsel, which is an insult to both mami’s offer and her intelligence. instead, she pauses respectfully and thanks her with sincerity.
“i appreciate it.” she tacks on as she rolls the meat before thumb and forefinger. “she could use the extra warmth; you’re right.” even though it was getting warmer by the day, angelita was growing and outgrowing her pelts as quickly. “my mother was a seamstress--have i told you that?” she asks, tearing off a small bite of meat and chewing it over. “wasn’t til i joined up with y’all that i really learned how lucky i was to learn that skill myself.” she had been a silly girl who’d thought she could be a silly wife to a rich man. what a lifetime ago that seemed.

answered previously.
✞ does your muse have an religious beliefs? what are they?
noa does have religious beliefs. she is catholic and though she is not practicing after having left her home, she believes strongly in god--thinking on her most devout days that perhaps he saved her life so that she might give birth to angelita. on her worst days, she thinks god exists to punish her. regardless, her religious outlook is not always a positive one. she believes that god does not care about whether she is happy or safe. god only cares if she is strong enough to provide for her daughter.

( erol ).
It wasn’t difficult to wake a man like Erol from his slumber, as he was too light a sleeper for his own comfort. He envied those who could sleep without stirring every hour or so, as his nervous body often did. Such was a symptom of being a man on the run. That morning it was the shrieking babe that brought him gasping into a sweat-slicked consciousness. This was not the first time, however, where one could deem the sound annoying, Erol found it to be terrifying beyond measure. Roused from his pile of blankets, he moved to see what the matter was.
“It’s alright.” The man said as he walked through the brush to find the scene was civil. The old pistol he called his own was slipped back into its holster.
There was regret in getting up when heh found it was just he and Noa awake, and while he considered going back to his resting spot, he knew he wouldn’t have luck with the restful part.
“Are you ill?” he asked, walking the perimeter of the clearing, grabbing whatever was dry enough to hold a flame. There wasn’t much these days.
it had been hard, at first, to go from sleeping in the comfort of a decent ranch with her own bed to living on her own with a swollen belly and nothing to her name. so poorly had she slept running small cons and doing odd jobs, that the first week she’d spent with the hounds--despite all of her concerns--was the best week of sleep she thought she might ever have had.
now that they were camped up on the ridge, noa was surprised to find that she either slept so lightly that the slightest change in breath woke her or that she slept in such a deep sleep that she’d wake even groggier that she had been in the first place. neither one left her feeling particularly well-rested. “well, it’s not alright, i think. i reckon it just is.”
“christ jesus, not that i know of.” noa laughed. “am i lookin’ so worn these days that i might as well have a touch of consumption?” she knew she looked near as drained as she felt. the move to bear tooth had been harder on her than it ought to have, but she was growing weary of the winter and being hunted and she was damned sure not about to be hanged again. damned sure. “so are you foolin’ or should i start workin’ harder at my beauty sleep?”
( jude ).
Jude started to feel worm-eaten. Fingers tapped aimlessly at the skin of his forearms. Traced the veins on the back of his hands. Searching for holes, maybe. We all gotta pull our weight. He can hear the sound of Joseph in his head and strangely, wondrously, he latched onto it. It was enough to pull him out of his den. Face the day like everyone else had to. It was enough to walk. If he wasted away, there wouldn’t be weight to pull. He could rest.
He considered that a great deal.
Just as he considered the pint-size figure of Angelita. If anything, he considered her more. Sitting up like something to be proud of. Noa would be somewhere near, he knew. Ever watchful. A smile found a way to him. Slowly. More in his voice than in his face, he reckoned. A baby hellhound. She often brought him out of his tent if nothing or no one else could. (He wouldn’t call it hiding.) Pity or guilt, she lacked it. She just looked at him and that was all. His shoulders rounded, knees popped, as he crouched down by her and held out his hand for her to grasp at. A dry cough into his shoulder was the precursor to his hoarse voice.
“An’ what kinda weight are you pullin’, cher?”
“angelita is on guard duty obviamente.” the last word is high pitched--the cooing voice of a mother spoken to her daughter--as noa approaches the pair from her tent, grabbing the tiny wooden horse that one of the other hounds whittled for her. it was a favorite toy next to a small stuffed rabbit that had once been noa’s when she was a girl herself. “one of us has got to keep this campsite safe from any would be outlaws.” flashing him a crooked grin, she sweeps up her skirts and sits next to angelita on the furs.
jude has a tough shell to crack and noa is under no misconception that she is the disarming one. no, it is angelita who melts the hardest of hearts among them. the tiny girl is one who saved her own life when she could’ve let herself die after having been hanged once already. it was for her, noa is certain, that god himself let her live.
angelita puts the horse’s smooth head in her mouth and squeals brightly at jude, grabbing his index finger and bouncing where she sits. as disarming as she is a jester, the girl makes her mother laugh in an unabashed way that sends noa’s head backwards and her dark waves cascading over her shoulders. it’s a rare laugh, reserved only for those most close to her and, usually, just for the girl. “you don’t think she’s our best defense against man and bear alike?”
( mac ).
“ no te preocupes, ” he reassured her gently as he neared the fire, voice little more than gravel at an hour this early. though he knew noa was often up at the crack of dawn to get things started for another day, mac was much fonder of whatever scraps of sleep he could cobble together. last night had been dreamless, damn near peaceful by his standards, but that didn’t mean his body didn’t protest at the abrupt wake-up call. angelita, small as she was, had enough power in her lungs to scrape the stars with her cries; mac, being a light sleeper, had fallen victim to them this morning.
he scrubbed a hand over eyes still heavy with sleep, followed by carding it roughly through the mess of dark hair atop his head. after rolling his shoulders a few times, still on some long-gone quest to wake himself up, mac nodded idly at her request. “ if it’ll keep you from actually eatin’ our horses, i’ll help, ” he acquiesced with a joking lilt to his tone – as if there was ever a chance he would’ve ignored her otherwise. “ ¿ sabes si hay café ? lo necesitaré, ” he added, tone much more fervent than it’d been as of yet, glancing around as if he could make it appear out of thin air. coffee was one of mac’s great loves on this earth, and on a morning like this, he craved it more than ever.
noa’s shoulders visibly relaxed at the sound of mac’s voice. at first it was the spanish alone that had made her more comfortable, but after the year she’d been with the hounds, there were an increasing number at camp that made her feel comfortable. mac was one such of those folks. she flashed him a smile as she adjusted her coats around her neck. “todavía hace frío. no puedo esperar para el verano.” new mexico had not been like this and it was her first true winter--her first snow. at least the snow was lovely, even if it made everything harder. somehow it smoothed every rough edge and made every piece of landscape into something truly beautiful. “¿dormiste bien anoche?” the words were casual, but she was leaving out what she was really fishing for: did angelita wake you too soon? she wondered if she was that transparent that he would notice.
“depends on the horse, verdad?” she joked. some of the horses were certainly better than others in terms of rideability. a few, ones that had been re-purposed from other riders, they were a bit trickier to persuade. “no puedo comenzar el día sin él.” she admitted, certainly not a rare habit among their compatriots, and poured him his own share into a tin cup. “it’s much too cold for water yet.” though they’d be needing that too. “coffee first, then firewood and breakfast.” she nodded to him with an empathetic smile. “with the hopes that mija will allow me to get any work done after the coffee.”
( the matron ).
ain’t no rest for the wicked. mami, especially feels that that applies. says that the hounds get their sleep for her. gets up before the sun rises and stays up long after it sets. things are expected to be there when people begin to rise and she knows that the rain isn’t help. had to put on multiple pelts just to keep herself reasonably dry. getting sick wasn’t an option. she’s certain lives will fall apart if she’s bed ridden just for the day.
getting the campfires set while rain trickled down was a feat in itself. she worked the wood for what felt like hours but she was thankful to have dry logs and kindling aside to make the process a hell of a lot easier. breakfast came and went and mami sat in her layers upon layer of fur, eyes closed with her coffee in hand. all anyone got were grunts from her after the daunting task of making the fire, preparing breakfast, and setting aside clothes she’d previously washed. she wasn’t here for chat. the pelts were cozy. didn’t matter if it… looks a bit much.
breakfast left and she cleaned, then it was time to prepare everything else. thankful for yesterday’s catch, she was hunched over her bucket, skinning the rabbits the snares had caught. she looked up for a moment to see fingers reaching out to the venison. “touch the damn thing and i’ll skin you next.” she’d taken them from her text to dry out in the open, and they were close to being done, hence the grabby fingers. “you’re going to wait until supper, you hear?” she points the knife at them. “or no supper at all.”
noa’s stomach had been growling all day. she’d planned on weaning angelita sooner than the year mark as her teeth had become almost unbearable during feedings, but the impending bounty on their heads complicating an already harsh winter had postponed fully weaning her until there was enough stability to fully transition her to solid foods. even still, the solid foods that were easiest to access were ones angelita had no hopes of eating. there was always jerky, smoked fish, and the like. it was much easier to fill her own belly and feed her daughter with what milk she made herself.
the whole process left her ravenous and she was always worried that one of the men would get sick of her appetite and make a bigger deal about it than need be. the insecurity of the ever precarious nature of having a toddler that could not pull her own weight was easily noa’s largest insecurity and she worked twice as hard to compensate for it. she’d spent the morning gathering wood, cleaning weapons, and sharpening knives for the camp. it was good work, but even a hearty breakfast hadn’t filled her aching belly that morning and she’d gone to see if she could help mami with some work and, possibly in doing so, weasel out some more food while she did so.
“skin me?” noa’s nose wrinkled in humor at the threat, though her fingertips hovered from the venison--unwilling to directly defy her friend and yet also unwilling to completely be dissuaded. “why mami, i don’t believe you’ve got it in you to skin a woman in front of her baby daughter.” the wry grin spread across her face and she patted angelita’s dark curls lovingly. “promise not to serve me for dinner and i’ll lend you a hand.” she left out the part about her own hunger, but it would come up eventually, she was certain. patience was a virtue of thieves and killers too.
( @euchariist )
“padre,” noa breaks the silence between them to get finn’s attention with an uncharacteristic softness in her hoarse voice. she hates how easily this new throat of hers betrays emotion. it’s worse than a scar; every word is a dark reverie of her life before. she tilts her head down towards the sleeping angelita and is grateful she made a baby that sleeps so well. to noa, her daughter has no father--that philandering drunk left for dead outside a saloon would never have claimed her. no, angelita is the product of a godless immaculate conception and has one woman to be both mother and father. noa does not let herself forget how very lucky it is for her to be born into a family at all--even a family of outlaws.
“padre, do you think that it would be a good time to baptize angelita?” a year now, the girl was strong, but the harsh winter had delayed them. it simply hadn’t seemed prudent before and, if she was being honest, noa was unsure that a baptism from a renegade priest would count. after spending more and more time with finn, she had decided that, maybe if that priest was him, it might just count after all. with the long arm of the law stretching its aching wintry fingers as they thawed like the snows in the valley, she felt a greater sense of urgency now, more than ever, to make sure that angelita would get into heaven ( even if her mother did not deserve to go along with her ).
“ perdóname--sorry--if she woke you.” noa apologized as she heard the crunch of brush beneath boots. angelita had dragged her mother from a sound sleep--such a rarity--with the strong cry of a teething toddler ( she had six now and was working on her seventh ). most of the camp was forgiving when it came to her cries, but noa knew it wasn’t something anyone in the hounds had signed up for. it had taken awhile to lull her back to sleep, but the damage was done and noa was up for the day and stoking the fire when the other ‘hound approached.
“she’s cuttin’ another tooth, but i’ve put her back down for the morning. should be another couple hours before she decides if she’s hungry or feelin’ a need to scream through the pain.” there was cooking that could be done and she was always hungry first thing in the morning. it felt selfish to put her own hunger over the others’ but half of angelita’s diet was breast milk and noa had to be well fed enough to produce. “you feel like helpin’ me with gatherin’ more firewood for breakfast? i’ve got a mighty pit in my stomach that could swallow a horse.”
raum, azazel
raum do you have a tendency to hoard anything? if so, what?
“i was somethin’ of a collector as a child.” noa had been a girl who had liked things. she had several hair ribbons, a few fine dresses, and a pretty spoon that she had found somewhere as a girl and insisted her mama shine up for her. she doesn’t have anything like that now. “can’t really carry all that with you.” on the rare occasion she comes across fruit or sweets, she isn’t shy about wanting them for herself. though, she’s inclined to share the fruit with angelita, who is just now taking to trying more variety of solid food--weary of giving up the breast. “if i’d a house when angelita was born, i would’ve kept more of the things she’s grown out of.”
azazel talk about a time when you were falsely blamed for something
noa’s nostrils flare as her lips draw into something of a defensive grin. it’s the touchiest subject she has to broach and yet people always find some kind of way to pick at it, like a scab at the crook of a wrist that can’t heal. “you’d think i’d be used to tellin’ folks about this, but it doesn’t get any easier.” a sharp, nasal exhale and she’s setting her jaw in annoyance at the memory. “seems like a man ought to be held responsible for his actions, but they so seldom have the misfortune of being so when a woman’s bearing the brunt of there worse vices.” she doesn’t say anything outright. it’s more than obvious that her virtue is no longer intact. even more obvious that she has no man to call a husband or a father. “when people go lookin’ to blame somebody for somethin’ that’s none of their business, they’ll pick the woman. sure as spring rain.”
ornias & astaroth
ornias talk about a time where you felt drained of energy
answered here !
astaroth have you ever falsely accused someone?
“i s’pose i falsely accused my sisters for all kinds of things when we were girls.” the eldest of the three girls, she was sure she’d pinned many a childish crime on the younger girls. none in particular stood out, but aside from childlike accusations noa doesn’t throw around accusations. her words have weight, so long as a person isn’t a threat to or a mark of the hellhounds.
