I hated everything my first summer. Told myself I’d never do it again. But now I’m going into year 4 and I promise you every second of pain is worth it.

One thing I’ve learned: when people end whatever they’re saying with “idk, I’m probably not making any sense,” it usually means they are telling you something very close and personal to them, something that’s such an integral part of their being that they have trouble putting it into words that do it justice.

an essay i wrote about my rookie year of dci

Walking down to the tunnel is the loudest silence I will ever experience. Any and everything is running through my mind, but I have to take a second. Take a second to breathe in, breathe out, relax, and continue walking with my head up high. As I continue down the tunnel,  I feel the rare luxury of the air conditioning blowing heavy upon my face. With every twist and turn I feel my uniform hugging and contouring my body. My team stands in line in front of me, feeling the exact same thing as we arrive to the end of the tunnel. Where I can’t completely see the field, but just enough to know that we are next. After exchanging hugs and good-lucks, it’s time. It’s time to make that field mine.

The roar of the crowd as I step out of the tunnel is overwhelming. The sight of the audience at my level and towering above me sends adrenaline through my veins. And suddenly, that feeling of absolute determination to make that field mine overcomes my body.

As I walk onto the field to set up equipment, I pass the judge holding a big white poster with a four on it. Four minutes until we start. Four minutes until show time. Setting my last flag, I pass a fellow team mate. We cross our arms and bump them against each other and say “Rock it out.” through our masks. I take my place behind the front ensemble, and wait. The music starts. Sixteen counts and I’m in. In those sixteen counts, I sit up, flip my hair over, and transform into character. On the field, I’m not a 17-year old girl from Texas anymore, I am a professional performer.

The feeling of that first note sends a sensation of excitement and confidence through my body. For the next eleven and a half minutes, that sensation pushes me through. It pushes me through the throbbing pain in my right calf, the ache of my hands as they firmly grasp my rifle and the chaotic battle my heart is fighting trying to keep up with the frantic movements of my body.

No one tells you what it’s going to feel like. No one tells you the feeling it sends through your body. No one tells you the sense of accomplishment you feel once you’re done. And no one tells you how to get to this point. You just do it.

i’m that friend that has to walk behind the group when the path isn’t big enough. i’m that friend that gets cut off in the conversation. i’m that friend that gets left behind when i asked for them to wait for me. i’m that friend that doesn’t get invited to hang out alot. i’m that friend that if i want to go to the mall or some place with a friend i have to be the one to invite people to make sure i get included. i’ll always be that friend.
