Say. My. Name. Say my name.
Have you ever whispered your own name as if you yourself don't even believe in it. I mean, saying Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie more boldly and loudly than *insert your name here*. Does that ever happen to you? I'm going through a serious period of coming face to face with a book I have believed is in me since I was about 10 years old. In the process I am almost "hoovering" every piece of advice I can about finding my voice and how to go about it. Interesting thing is, today when i came across a particular piece of advise from the CEO of one of the biggest publishing houses in the world - Hayhouse Publishing, I stopped dead in my tracks and this happened. Of the 10 key nuggets he offered, the speaker then draws to an end with what is the most important thing about writing a book; brand yourself as you. You name is the one thing you will always have even when your interests and ideologies do. The challenge is to believe in you personal brand before you expect anyone else to. That should be a no-brainer to some like me who lives and breathes marketing, but it isn't. This is part where I say my own name out loud and all that comes out is something a little louder than a muttered phrase. Gugu Nkabinde. Gugulethu Nkabinde. An immediate vote of no confidence from my beloved voices in my head. How does Kris Jenner do it? We can argue that is an easy name. Rolls off the tongue and already Sounds famous! I could also argue that it is in "English" or American. Or Armenian (I actually have no idea what it is. But there. I say That more boldly. Closer to home though, apart from the well known struggle veterans' surnames - the Sisulus, the Mandelas, the Tambos, many more names are brands of their own. Think of Khaya Dlanga. Even my dad knows who that is. Did he always say his name with confidence and conviction? Is he really that sold on who he is? More so than I am. I can even say Danai Gurira better. So what is it? And I'm asking as a person who is having trouble selling my name to me right now. Am I any less confident? Or is just that I am not confident in my name in that way. Trick question. I have not had much experience selling my own brand to me. In fact as a teenager, I always told my dad how much I wanted to have a second name - Western like all my siblings. Don't laugh, but I toyed with Nicole after the first decent pair of reading glasses I got by Nicole Smith. It sounded so nice. Without realizing it then in my frame of mind, it somehow balanced out the "over-Africanness" I had made up as the reason why a western or Christian name was necessary when I turned 16. My dad laughed and never entertained the thought. And maybe he should have. Because now that j think about it, I sort of still continued to wish I was called by a different name. Not because the meaning didn't resonate, but to fit in in a circle of Jades, Jullians and Lydias I was surrounded by. At this moment I could bet that of the hoards of Gugu Nkabindes that come up in a search for my name - I may just be the least confident in it right now. But that has to change because this Gugu Nkabinde has a lot of new worlds to create in my lifetime. I would like that to be known in some way. Not "some girl". Gugu Nkabinde. And for there not to be any doubt who that is. It's a growth moment, I must say. Even writing my name down when I started this post was bit of a "Eeek!" Now I'm going to say it aloud each time. I have my inner Eusebius McKaiser on! I mean, that guy? Doesn't even give a one a real chance to question his name. He introduces himself like his name belongs in everyone's mouth - and you can't help but say it with oomph too. A quick row call of my friends in my heads and yep! They own their names. I need to get in on this awesomeness. Here I am working on a personal brand strategy for someone else and I'm preaching to the choir. Go figure! I have work to do. Gugu Nkabinde signing out! :-)
Allow yourself to unfold at your own pace.

Swimming against the (Valentines) tide
Mid-pitch ADD has me all kinds of twisted. My brain is a mess. Then Kagiso Msimango asks a question on Facebook and now I'm here. Sigh. 😂
Valentines Day. Red. Roses, teddies, confetti and chocolate. Urrrgh! I hadn't thought about it as any more than the day I have to get up at 4am to run my first 21km race in ages. You probably think it's because I'm single. I think I would be running on Sunday anyway because I don't actually know what it's supposed to mean - this day of love and why the world must Stop.
Have I always been this way? I think I've had Valentines Day anxiety once or thrice at some point of my life. Anxiety because the hype had me believing if no one made this a song and dance about me I didn't matter. Sigh. The folly of youth. Or just good old plain indifference. Whatever. So here's the thing that got me pulling out a pen and paper (well, my iPhone notes page. But who's checking?)
"How do you feel about Valentines Day? Have you always held the same view or has it changed?" - Kagiso Msimango via The Goddess Academy Facebook page.
I won't go into the responses from that page because those are sacred and private to the members of the group. But when a question has me reaching out for an opinion in my head I have come to entertain it. Swirl it. Decide on my view. Call it therapy.
Back to Valentines. For me it's a hack - from all angles I squint and look at it from. Firstly on the date, I imagine some emperor looking dude, blind-folded and asked to pick a date on the calendar to honor St. What's-his-name (think "Pin the tail on the donkey" style ). Then 3000 yrs later, all the chocolate and teddy manufacturers were plotting this date into sales graphs and projections with the joke entirely us when our Valentine's honey acts an absolute fool on the morning of the 15th of February like the roses on the table haven’t even blossomed fully. I mean; "approximately 150 million Valentines Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentines Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas." And that is just one aspect of it. Restaurants are booked out, red roses ordered in dozens from florists world wide, hotel rooms... You get it, right?
Here's a view. I'm undeniably (at least to the voices in my head) one of the most hopeless romantics I know. #TeamLove all the way. But after a few bad experiences where it was clear that a partner or suitor went all out to tick all the 'boxes' of flowers here and maybe a dinner there. I think we settle for little every year in making this day bigger that the love itself. It shouldn't matter too much how much money and gifts guy X showers you with to show you his love on this day if he treats you like crap the day before and after, does it? Can you smell the burnt fingers?
See, I was here. In a bad dead-end relationship where said partner most likely used My bank card to even buy me those flowers so I could "feel special" at the office. It was cute - the walk from reception to my desk. And then realizing that this was still bad for me, still dead end and no one would even know based on that scene with the Netflorist delivery guy.
So maybe there is a hint of sour grapes in that view - but I can balance it with an equally cute story that is All #TeamValentines. There was also that one time when that one tall glass of chocolate milk kind of guy sent out all the old school woo to try and get me to go to dinner; I mean, a handwritten note, kindergarten style "Will you be my Valentines dinner date? Yes, no or maybe :)". Then at noon came the candy - 90's style with the cutest words on them, the calls to ask what I felt like eating for dinner - homie went all out! If you're wondering, no we're not together (you were thinking Marry Him!) He summed up all the cute and charming he had into one day and it Was nice. But? Still a jerk who loved the sound of his own voice and it was all for his ego - boy was he so proud of himself. It was never about me. It righted all his future wrongs in his view. Valentine's Day is now for some the sugar-coating for i-Love Back, the courage to get over your 'gwababa' and ask a girl or guy out or an expensive apology.
It's all good and well if it's not just about looking the best on the interwebs on Valentine's Day. So I ain't even mad when 4days before the day I'm more concerned about the delivery of my PnP Marathon race number. For me, at least that's real. And it's about me. I honestly don't get the scramble and partition for Baes to be ready for the day. It is a day. What happens in the meantime and after is what I'm after. I'm still a hopeless romantic. But my self esteem isn't even phased about what it 'means' to be single on yet another Feb 14. Hit me up when it isn't just for show and tell. I want tulips and lilies - I don't care much for red roses. I love them on a random Tuesday. And I love them all year round. Stuffed animals give me the creeps. Exaggerated displays of affection to make up one day don't excite me. I want an all day every day, twice on a Sunday "Valentine". Not Be Mine, more I choose You. Every day! :)
This year I promised myself One thing; that I embrace courage to start And finish more projects. The key word here being Courage. I leapt right into a commitment to just picking a select few problems I want to solve - no matter how small or mundane they may seem to the world. Things I will put my heart into, whether I will get paid for them or not. Recognition or criticism. Gasp! Today after turning the last page of the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, I came back fave with some choices I need to make about one of those projects. The client cannot currently afford the service. You walk away, right? Wrong. My biggest take out in the critical view of what it means to be a creative being and living your life purpose through courage, is to commit. When I asked myself at the start of the new year is what mark I want to leave in this vast universe? What would I do even if I would get no recognition or financial gain? What questions do I want to answer in the world? Well, I want to create. I want to solve everyday puzzles. Like what products or services don't even know they won't be able to live without after I introduce them? Who can My written stories help? Those are the main two. I am who I am for the greater good of some people in this world. Just that acceptance changes everything. So you have to start following through when ideas visit- because they visit You for a reason. And then just start. Everyday feed those ideas. Do One thing at the very least to take a step forward. One more paragraph. One more slide to your plan. Just at least one more. I'm writing because it is keeping me moving to document the journey, the feelings. So when it comes to the decision on what to do when faced with a seemingly profit-less end, I come here for the answers lying next to the courage somewhere within. Do I walk away? I think I already know the answer to that. I will make it work. I look forward to sharing some of that work on here someday soon. Whether anyone will read about it or not. Because while the writing started out as a goal to strive towards, it has actually become a valuable part of the journey. Xxx
Close the door. Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don’t try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say. It’s the one and only thing you have to offer.

Will what you want.
Setting new goals can have you all excited with one breath and flipping out in fear with the next. I'm sitting halfway through those breaths, while everything I have decreed for the future is coming at me wild and fast! We all cry out and plead with higher powers for what we believe we really want. But it isn't really until we write down the vision, speak to the trusted advisers in our circles that the cosmic shift begins to happen. That is beauty and horror of creation. Willing intently for the future you want to happen and then living it. It's quite a roller coaster ride. I mean, is it really that simple? It appears it actually is. The cliches were all spot on; "failing to plan is planning to fail." Or, "Look at the positive and negatives in your life and acknowledge that the only constant there is You. You will what you want." Having been stuck in a cycle of "Pity me" way too often, I have tasted the honey in willing what I want. The trickiest part of all this is in not being afraid to let go of control. You can't will what you want by forcing it to happen. 'Willing' as it were, is less about do whatever is possible than it is about setting the virtual wheel spinning and trusting it to fall exactly where it should. What gets that wheel spinning? The intention. The vision. The goal. I love Sunday's and the month of January for the automatic setting that prompts us to reimagine what we want. Even acknowledging what we don't want and letting all of that go. But the focus is on what you do want. Think about it, feel about it (it should come from deep within you) and do whatever you can to hold a steady vision of it in your mind or vision boards, screensavers, whatever. And that is so that you put all the good feelings that those images bring back into the virtual wheel making it go faster - the sheer power of your mind to create. As bonus, it's always great to know what your wish looks like when it arrives. I know it sounds fairytale like. But get this. For my 30th birthday I did my first solo trip to Europe. I decided on that dream with no bouncing bank balance at my feet. But I decided to will a once in a lifetime trip to make friends with myself again in the cities I had dreamt off for months. I found pictures, researched the places to stay and best times to visit. I found clips of the French Open on YouTube one Saturday and imagined how amazing it would be in the stands. I started a countdown to my birthday. I was Not not doing this! 3 months later I received a sizeable bonus check that allowed me to book my flights. I didn't expect, it was never guaranteed to get those in that company at the time. But yay! Step one done! And just like that, things started to unfold. I decided on the maximum I could save for the six months coming and it was a decent amount to spend. The cherry on top a few weeks before I was due to leave, loved ones gifted me with accommodation and more spending money. I think I was in a daze for the 2weeks leading up to that trip. I kept going back to my vision boards and there it was, as I had willed it. That crucial seed. Even when I pulled out my zoom lens sitting court side watching Raphael Nadal being his awesome best, it hit me with a tear or two in tow. I need to do this more! I have a lot of other stories since then. Needless to say as human as I am, I forget. I completely let go of the wheel and jump on a more hamster wheel version that spins like crazy with frustration and anxiety until it throws me off. But like a reset button, the more I will the more I get. And I think I mustered up enough momentum on my virtual wheel this time. I recently came face to face with confidence in who I am - suddenly what I've always thought were things that were long overdue to me are right on time. All I know to do now is receive it. Then be brave enough to do all the work that comes with it. I am so calm it scares me. A little 2% of me is wondering if this is all possible, and the rest is just in willing and receiving mode. It is the right time to grow. You will what You want.
There's a verse in the bible that talks so well about committing to change. Paraphrased, it simply says that if you want to choose life - a new way of life, you leave behind what you thought was your former way of being. If you try to save your old ways you will lose your "life"- but if you chose to lose those ways you gain a richer life. Damn. That's so profound. It's my take on the conversation Jesus had with men looking to become his disciples. You can't go half in, he was basically saying. And I'm preaching to my imaginary choir right now as I overthink the fact that I am starting a 3 day juice cleanse tomorrow. Eek! Ok, it's a Soup and Juice cleanse but still. No solids. And worst of all- no sugar! What has come over me, you ask? An OTT approach to self love in 2016. This is something I can truly be courageous about, right? I have a certifiably "druggy" relationship with sugar. I think have the worst sweet tooth in the history of sweet teeth. And I'm pretty sure that's a real thing. But lately I have been stumbling across what can only be the universe speaking to me to watch my sugar consumption. My acid levels have been through roof (sugar), this is putting strain on my liver and kidneys (yeah, I think that's what the Dr said 3mths ago. And a spirit medium even) Then all the conversations in my holiday crossed the sugary path. I remember my horror the one day when I found my favorite gin at a house we were being hosted for dinner - and guess what? Only sugar free (uuurgh!) tonic in the whole house! And that's when a friend whispered to me, "Your sugar is haunting you. Look." So I took the dare. To really be about loving myself and for all the work I put in on my fitness, I should fix other things before they are seriously broken. Skinny definitely doesn't mean healthy. A few days ago I came across a Women's Health special edition magazine titled: The Sugar Edition. Well, hey there. All the effects (most of which I already knew from the last 3weeks in conversations) as well as a 21day guide to weaning your body off sugar. After which you can re-introduce healthier doses in certain forms as you please. There was the writing (and help) on the wall. Having toyed with the idea to do a juicing cleanse for a little while, without much thinking I started to search for suppliers of a pre-packed Juice Cleanse in Joburg. Before I could even chicken out I signed and paid for the d livery of my 3 day detox. And I'm officially scared. I'm probably typing this so late at night because I think this will bring me the resolve I need to not freak out when I wake up tomorrow morning. This after I had my prisoner's goodbye style supper of Cocoa Puffs! I mean it's going to 24 days before I can even look at That kind of sugar. Gosh, it feels akin to a vow of celibacy. All I kept hearing today I posted a pic of my delivery to social media was how my skin would thank me and blah and blah. I realized it was all an attempt at scoring some sympathy, tips or better yet, "Don't do it! I know someone who died from it!" LOL! Thing is, I go straight into a sugar detox after that. 21 more days! How? Beats me. I just want to live through tomorrow. The only thing keeping me going is how I started this blog post: if I want to really making this the amazing year of entirely Following my Bliss with the best effort yet, then I need to stop paying lip service to the process. I'm still committed to doing the things that scare me - especially if they mean showing my self more love! Wish me luck!
Intention is only the beginning..
"It is being honest About my pain that makes me invincible." - yield. Salt x Nayyirah Waheed. Unexpressed feelings are like a cancer that eats away at your perception of reality. Yesterday I was at the other end of such repressed feelings and was shocked at how hurtful those words are when they force themselves out because they can't be contained any longer. And all I have to say about the incident is that I immediately realized what it was because I have been doing the same. For me though, the feelings bolt out with sting and sometimes incoherent. I can't say that's any better but when it becomes venom and hacks at someone else's self worth then it needs to be checked, right? And I tried to not respond by shoving my feelings aside and checked it head on. I'm not saying this is the miracle fix-all, but I can admit that when I chose to check the anger coming at me, it felt lighter to have it out than in. And that is all that matters as a lesson to myself. I could even almost feel my Throat chakra get better for it. Lol! (It wasn't anything to laugh about in the hour that it unfolded, by the way.) This feeling is new to me, you see. As a feeling in general but also with regards to dealing with this person X. I get baited, fight fire with fire, *insert screaming match* and walk away. Seething! But I walk away without saying how I really feel so often that this was a small victory. Respectfully insisting on having my feelings heard. Whether those feelings would be understood was a different story. I just needed them out. Right there on the table. While this is a recurring kind of conversation show down, today really felt like I was standing up for myself - not because I think I was infinitely right and person X was wrong, but because I just knew passive aggression was never going to form a new pattern. This year is all about new patterns for me so it was bound to happen that I confront it in the form of someone else. I don't have a profound "so what?" To this story. I just know that, right or wrong in a heated conversation yesterday - I just stood by my intention so express myself better. And writing this afterwards is another such internal victory. The intention is to keep growing. And so it is.
To be All these things and OK with it.
Recently I have noticed that I'm mostly around people who are so much more loving, accepting and forgiving of themselves than I am. And maybe it is just that they have mastered areas of self love that are my current lesson? I don't know. I just know that my friends and people I'm meeting have something important to silently teach. A good example is a woman I met recently, Mikki who has owned her strength as a larger than life black woman like well deserved mink coat. I sat there one day soon after the New Year in a conversation where she said, "I have No time to spend watching myself so a man does not feel any type of 'lesser than'! I am loud, I have opinions, things I'm too passionate about to dumb down for others to feel better about myself. I want a strong man who won't let that defeat him out of a sense of who He is." Simple. Hard core? Maybe. But contrary to how you might image Mikki in your mind, she is all kinds of attractive, caring, soft and hard, funny and super intuitive. She is feminine. Yet there I was thinking strength and femininity are a trade off against each other. How wrong have I been! She taught me in 10 days how to own my personality by seeing and accepting hers in the realest of ways. Another new friend who is a certified extroverted introvert, was a lesson in how to stop apologizing for choosing me in situations. If an activity is on the table, he would review it, maybe ask two or three questions then politely accept or decline without apologizing for choosing Him. I apologize like it's an Olympic sport! Or I avoid the call or text that would require me to turn down an invitation. Cop out, basically. I looked at how simple his social life was, keeping an eye on "What does Blaise Want to do?". Again, I sucked at this. And the teacher appeared for a 2week crash course. I'm still learning. It takes a lot out an overthinking, slightly sensitive extrovert to think of this very descriptor as endearing. I have inkling to try and change this about myself, which appears easier than just accepting. Also, there are a lot of people I have met who are all trying to change the very thing that is their essence. I think we do that for acceptance - become that which is already acceptable. Neglecting the fact that All one's energy gets used up trying so hard, versus being more considered about how this is a strength in itself and not a weakness. So what if I'm not a morning person? That I enjoy my time alone? And if I prefer quiet mornings without having to talk to a human being until 10am, why can't I proactively use that for much needed meditation, planning and self love? We just keep trying to change who we are. Confidence comes from being what comes most naturally. No one can do a better version of you. It takes so much less energy to embrace yourself, then use your energy where it gets you what you want. So, I'm freeing up the extra time and effort trying to dial down things about myself that I think are too this or too that. I am a creative thinker. I am also quite analytical. I am funny. I am a kind of beautiful I have never seen before. I am dash of crazy, The often spontaneous kind. I struggle to get up in the mornings I love an adrenaline rush. I am serial over thinker. I am lot of personality. I am curious. I am talkative. I am highly empathetic. I am also an extroverted introvert. I am anything I dream of being; An entrepreneur A life coach A speaker An advisor. I am all these things and lot more I can't wait to discover. And I love all of them!
A very productive Saturday morning. I feel like I gained a new super power coming into the New Year. Scared and Excited. #LayLowStayFiring #Create #Grow. 🎈
The idea of ideas...
Flying over "middle of nowhere" on my flight back to Joburg, my mind and I are deliberating over the concept of Ideas. What is their very nature? How do ideas operate? Do ideas find us or are we born with them and then the right people and experiences sharpen them or kill them? As you can probably tell, I started off the year asking a lot of questions. Questions are giving me more answers than I ever thought were possible. So now I'm back here on paper - having made another realization that I do not want to forget in a hurry. In what was a feedback session with my boss Laurent to wrap up the year before he jetted off on a month long voyage, I remember solely the part he repeated a few times. Laurent has seen me struggle with the huge potential in me for a few years. Coming from 9years of marketing for a few great brands and multinationals, I had hit pinnacles many of my peers still strive for - at a very young age. My very move into strategy at an advertising agency was an attempt to bring back learning and introduce a challenge to my work. As a result of that past experience, I get impatient at times or even get plain lazy because I feel it has all been done before. Often I am paralyzed to inactivity by that fear, yet my mind never sleeps with all these ideas that still float around wanting to choose me. Come sleep time, they are flying at 440km/h at me that I hardly ever keep up! So how then does one move from an idea into action? Am I maybe just an ideas jockey - selling off ideas so I can just man the "ideas conveyor belt"? Nope. The anxiety in me at this immediately signals that out as a cop out. I am more than that. Back to Larry (Laurent's office name). After all the feedback, he made an acute observation that would change my view of how to grow from here: "You sharpen an idea unlike any other. It's always amazing to hear how you listen, build, tear it apart, reconstruct and crystalize it. Next year we need to focus on sharpening Your ideas." The funny part is that this is all my holiday has been about. For the first time in my life I see that "sharpeners" that have planted themselves in my life over the past year to 5 years and I am officially ready to be sharpened for a change. Any idea that crawled up next to me in bed at 2am or kept pace with me on my promenade run has been matched with someone or something that makes its time ripe for me to do. I have been the shaper and sharpener for so long that I almost missed the change in tide. I'm glad this all came together right through to my last day in Cape Town because, although I am sad to be leaving today - I am excited about the partnership I have made with any idea that visits me. I will court it and explore. Then if it is not mine to keep? I'll gladly escort it to its rightful partner. That is after all the law of ideas as described by Elizabeth Gilbert in Big Magic (Bloomsbury, 2015). An idea will visit it intended, but also several others in the world. It will knock once, twice if you are lucky. It will then find a new vessel if ignored. It is most definitely not yours to sit on forever. This explains how 5 people could come up with variations of the same design. They all acted on the idea - added their personal magic and voila! This is also how a mate who told me a brilliant business idea 2years ago, then had to park it because "Life Happens " - read about it in a local glossy magazine yesterday, having been done by a guy in Alexandra township, Johannesburg. At such a ripe time of year with all these ideas that rain on us with the promise of a clean slate offered by the new year, I wrote this to share. Ideas are out there mixed in the air we breathe to take on any willing partner. From a rural village to Silicon Valley - they visit us alike. They float around waiting for someone to grab them. And act. That is the magic, your willingness and commitment to building on the idea while it is yours. If the idea needs a partner, then trust in there bring an abundance of the right people to come and sharpen it. For the longest time I have been this person. One who finds the people at a time to just sharpen their idea and help them connect dots. As the pilot announces our impending landing in Johannesburg, I open my eyes to take in my discovery. And what I have written about it - an idea starter in itself. These ideas have been trying to get my attention for a while now. I am available.
Courage over fear
It's a day before New Years Eve and I cannot sleep. I'm lying awake starting at the realization that my view of any type of relationship is rather temporary. Suddenly it's scary how admitting to myself how true that AHA! Moment is makes me feel. But the pieces I am about put down here are as clear as they have ever been. I seem to have attracted that which I want the least. I don't want temporary relationships. But yet I treat all relationships in my life as why. I actually seem to think that no one ever really "stays". They all leave. And by "All" I mean my mom, brothers, uncles, aunts, grandparents, friends, lovers... Basically in my mind, the ones I'm ever truly fond of never really stay. And that's just sad. I have a sinking feeling in my stomach writing this because I thought that losing those people was supposed to mean I'm stronger than your average. But I'm so weak at the prospect of someone just loving me for me. Just. And just wanting to stay. Stick around for the not so nice stuff. And stuff. And this is where I am with everyone in my life right now. I've increasingly preferred my own company over the past 5 years because I didn't think anyone would ever want to stay. They too must leave at some point. Isn't that how the story goes? The relationships? Pretty much the same frequency - I expected them to leave and they eventually did. To other people who probably wanted them to stay a whole lot more. From my birthday on the 2nd of June in 1990 (that far - I was turning six), my mom received news that her younger sister and only sibling she actually grew up with, aunt Joyce had died in hospital. Something to do with her heart failing. How, when we were so close? But I understood it all as they told me. Death. Her never coming back. The whole thing. And with her is where I had spent a lot of my school holidays until then. She had given me the baby sister I had been begging my mom to "get us". I learnt to love babies watching my cousin, Siko from birth. Learnt to carry babies on my back with her as the Guinea pig. Taught everything I knew at the age of 5 going on 25. I thought I would teach her everything. Anyway, I digress. Point is, the first major rug in my life got pulled. And there were no more school holidays babysitting. A room in my mental castle totally desalinated. So there I was growing up. Joined to the hip to my brother, Terrence. UMthabisi as we called him at home. And that sums him all up. He brought all the laughter in that home. I had him high up on a pedestal for how smart, charming, talented, funny I wanted to be when I really grew up. I could paint you the full picture of Mthabisi but I think that's another piece / book. We made promises to each other when I went away to spend time with my paternal grandparents on what I'd bring him and what surprise he would have for me when I got back. He was one of my first truly best friends, when I come to think of it. The year I turned 13, a few days after my birthday - my dad's youngest brother was shot and killed in Johannesburg. Now, he and I got along so well. He taught me sarcasm along with real good - what we now call old school "international" music. From Lionel Richie to George Benson we would sing along to in his Ford Sierra on every single trip. Even if it was just just Maponya supermarket up the road. I had seen him on most school holidays since 1994, when my exiled father returned and could now move freely thus being able to take me back to South Africa to spend time with my paternal family. It was in this year that a 4 year friendship just abruptly ended - and I was no longer "Googlings" to anyone. This meant I had to go to Johannesburg for the Christmas school holiday. As usual, Mthabisi and I went through our rituals. He was buying me a Fila jacket to match his and I would find it in my too when I got back. I was leaving to go and deal with the grief of uncle Mandla's passing and he promised me I could handle it. And I would tell him all about it when I got back. Then on Boxing Day in 1997, I had an out of body experience sitting there listening to my dad saying there had been an accident back home. A terrible car crash in which Mthabisi and another cousin of mine had died. Yes. So I asked him to repeat that a few times. Was it a terrible prank and someone would yell "Just Kidding"? Not a chance! The sound of this room in my mental castle crashing shoulder like that of a mass demolition. I was in such shock that it took a couple of days before I could even get on a plane to Bulawayo. I was in a daze between asking whether they had called the hospital to ask if he was ok then crying uncontrollably for long periods of time. I got home and fell apart such that I never attended the funeral. I eventually saw it all on video. And again. He was never coming back. Ever. In fact, I only started dreaming of Mthabisi when I turned 25. With good reason, at that. And I think from there it seemed to go downhill. All my grandparents. Cousins. I got numb at some point. I just leaned on my mother. As I grew older ours became less of a temple of fire dance where she grounded me every other week to more of friends. I was a real mummy's baby. My heart beat for her and she confided in me in ways I don't know if I will ever experience again. We leaned on each other at All these funerals. The most being in October and December 2009. Good God! *grab tissues now* In October 2009 my late aunt Joyce's youngest of two daughters was killed in a horrible car crash while on a school trip. Now at 23 I immediately owned up to rushing to mom's side. It was me and her. I just knew what it had done to her to have to go and identify Pamela in the hospital. And because my siblings were already scattered all over the world - it was my duty. I watched my mother break down in a way that shattered my heart. Pamela was 10. My aunt had died soon after having her. It's hard to bury a child as a child yourself. You question the world and everything in it. It's harder to watch your mother technically burying Yet another child. And like hell was exploding in my world, on the 28th of December - three months later, my brother Joe who had just turned 40 at the beginning of December collapsed in the bathroom his London home only to be pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. I had visited him in May of that year. Our connection had been renewed such that I believe that I felt him "leave" that day. I couldn't break for a good 5mins and it stopped when my sister in law- his wife, called to say it had just happened. That's the story I chose to believe. That we had that kind of connection. I felt He left me too at that precise moment. And visiting him could never happen again. I have never been around as much pain as I was surrounded by from October 2009. I thought my mother would actually die of heartbreak. I knew that was a real thing. In fact I knew that not even I could handle the physical pain that the heartbreak came with. When Joe's remains were eventually repatriated for burial back in Bulawayo, my family experienced Mthabisi's and Pamela's passing anew. I prayed that this was the last of it. The 3 months and 23 days after that funeral saw me become accustomed to chatting to mom every other day. Long calls, or texts with juicy family gossip almost silenced our pain for 5 minutes. Then there the emails from her when it was a full on scoop or a much needed the pep talk when I was going through doubt, experiencing fear or just a downer. She would call and pray with me on the phone when I could not sleep. I just watched her live for her living family - especially her grandchildren. She actually went from nice granny to the one who doting on them and spending all her time with them. Then came her newly acquired hunting safari. She launch a full scale attack on this new project. Driving 6 - 7hrs on her own to check on everything. She seemed ok. Playing tennis, having dinners with her brother. She just seemed so determined to live! To me she piled on all the things she wanted me to know about how much she loves me, how great I will turn out - she was surreal. Almost like listening to God Himself at times. Then during a dream in the early hours of the 24th of April 2010, where has seen myself standing at an accident scene with my nephew Marvyn, I woke up to a phone call. My cousin Jabu in Bulawayo was on the other end saying that my mom had just died in a car accident. That was the end of it all, I think. I have lost it before. But this was something out of a horror movie. I had wished to "die" for a minute for other stupid things before. This was a real prayer for weeks asking God to leave her and take me. That, my friend is your heart ripping out of your chest without an anesthetic. God hated me. I was sure. I clearly did not deserve people so they left. Somehow the story advanced to it all being my fault. I Was the common denominator after all. Right? And right there, in the culmination of 10 years of loss, I became petrified of growing roots of any kind - in a place, apartment, work, friendships, some family members. (Ok, Most of my family) I just allowed myself to slip away from myself by just being uninvolved. It would lessen the pain. Soften the blow. And because I thought I had gained some invincible super power for getting through it all and not dying of heartache - I would be fine because I survived. Wrong. I have described these losses in such detail because, a. I actually hope someone, somewhere will some day read this and catch a glimpse of hope but also take caution. And b. I realize the importance of allowing ourselves to actually FEEL things through and not just think them through. I had to shed these few tears writing this, because by starting to recount it, therein own my lesson in how - what I thought was thick skin from pain is actually a hinderance. I am sitting here because I started with one question that became a whole audit. Like, why do I never visualize and plan further into the future than just a year or two? Why do I still take things year by year for such a big dreamer as I? Why have I lost touch with this or that person? Why can't I look forward to long futures with virtually anyone? Why is my default to handling disagreements or dealing with my unhappiness in a situation always to just "Leave it! I don't need it/them in my life." What guarantee do I have that any of these people will or actually Want to just leave? I mean, can you spell giving up your power in 4 letters? (Clue: it starts with a G. I joke.) Things have "happened" to me and I felt I deserved to get comfortable in a 25 year long pity party disguised as "strength and resilience". So I'm calling myself out right now. 21hrs before the New Year. I don't have a detailed "Iyanla Fix My Life" strategy or intervention ready. I just want to commit to doing better by me just for getting myself to this point. This has been a self-indulgent piece because I deserve one last pity party for this nervous little condition of mine I dined and slept with for so long. We all can use the perspective though. I am a highly emotional Gemini who literally lost touch with her feelings. I've had imposter feelings building more imposter feelings. But I have felt myself here in 3hrs and 33mins of writing this. Add the 30 odd hours of therapy I have sat through in the past 2 years - trying to actually crack this lost feeling I had attached to myself. For that, I can only have ONE New Year's resolution for 2016. I will do better by me. I will feel my way through it. All of it. If not just bring vulnerable to being loved by all of the universe and loving it back without fearing its possibility of leaving me.
A more courageous life...
Let me start off by stating the not-so obvious: I’ve neglected my voice. I have intentionally stifled myself when it comes to writing and self expression such that, save for a couple of posts here - I had relegated this blog account to just echoing. How tragic? Echoing those who have been braver than I to clear their throats and speak. To speak about unspeakable pain, figuring life out and maybe - just maybe give someone else more courage. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write. Because to unclog my throat and be the writer & communicator I know I was born to be I have to start with the dirty drains. Grab your Kleenex. I’m going to make sense of this life this starting with me….
Gotta tick off Rio de Janeiro. 😎 (at Cape Point Lighthouse)
After months of an amazing partnership with Tim and his class at #BostonMediaHouse my mind was blown today! Seeing a real brief to the students coming to life in the presentations we've just seen is just... WOW! These are our future brand custodians. And the future looks really bright. 😎 Now for the tough job of selecting the winners in the group presentations. Cc @joepublicagency for letting me a part of it. ❤️ (at Joe Public United Building, Nicol Main Office Park)
