the philosophy and neuroscience of consciousness is actually incredibly interesting and it sucks how it's mostly associated AI chuds these days. i don't think anyone has ever been able to offer an explanation that is able to account for both free will and physicalism. which is a problem: either free will isn't real (which is exceedingly unlikely) or physicalism isn't real. and physicalism can't be not real without discrediting most natural science.
the development of AI is absolutely important to both the physical (neuroscience) and the philosophical approach to consciousness, but it's kinda crazy to see anyone take a serious look at the theories about consciousness and actually existing AI (as in NNs & ML) and come to any conclusion other than "ok so the statistics analyzer approach to consciousness is categorically false"

the thing is that the right-wingers are correct that the humanities are in dire straits. but it's jot because of woke but because of literary theory infecting everything
and this literary theory is often "woke" and looks very radical at first, but it's really not. you see this everywhere (you won't be able to unsee it when you've seen it once), but the vast majority of critical engagement with capitalism can't actually imagine an alternative future without capitalism, it's capitalist realism all the way down. "capitalism" (often nebulous defined) becomes a catch-all term that encompasses everything you don't like and you struggle against, but it's a metaphysical enemy that, through its totality, never let's you leave. in this sense the "radical" humanities are a great quarantine zone, but right-wingers in their endless search for something to fix what's wrong with society without touching the economic relation can't even tolerate these last holdovers of thinking about the economic relation at all
