So, I’ve been thinking long and hard about this (for more than a month, but quite a bit in the last month, and even more so in the past week) and I’ve decided that I have to step away from Sherlock fandom.

After having engaged with other fandom spaces, I’ve come to realize how toxic BBC Sherlock can become, and after the comments by TPTB of recent days, the issue has only been exacerbated.

Over the course of the next few days/weeks, I will be working to transfer what little fic I have on this blog to my new url and moving entirely into my other fandom space.

Thanks to all the lovely people I’ve met, especially @yorkiepug , @inevitably-johnlocked , @sherlockingsherlock and @kayjaykayme who are a lot of the reason this was an incredibly difficult decision to make.

“…after repeated viewings, the critic Andy Klein – in a piece for Salon pointedly entitled ”Everything You Wanted to Know about Memento“ – conceded that he wasn’t “able to come up with the ‘truth’ about what transpired prior to the film’s action. Every explanation seems to involve some breach of the apparent ‘rules’ of Leonard’s disability – not merely the rules as he explains them, but the rules as we witness them operating throughout most of the film”. The rules are crucial to Nolan’s method. If Memento is a kind of impossible object, then its impossibility is generated not via an anything-goes ontological anarchy but by the setting up of rules which it violates in particular ways.

Nolan nevertheless maintains that, however intractable his films might appear, they are always based on a definitive truth. As he said of Inception in an interview with Wired: “I’ve always believed that if you make a film with ambiguity, it needs to be based on a true interpretation. If it’s not, then it will contradict itself, or it will be somehow insubstantial and end up making the audience feel cheated. Ambiguity has to come from the inability of the character to know – and the alignment of the audience with that character”. When the interviewer Robert Capps put it to Nolan that there might be several explanations of the film’s ending, that the “right answer” is impossible to find, the director flatly contradicted him: “Oh no, I’ve got an answer.” But Nolan’s remarks may only be another act of misdirection; if a century of cultural theory has taught us anything, it’s that an author’s supposed intentions can only ever constitute a supplementary (para)text, never a final word. What are Nolan’s films about, after all, but the instability of any master position? They are full of moments in which the manipulator – the one who looks, writes, or narrates – becomes the manipulated – the object of the gaze, the character in a story written or told by someone else.“

Fans Deserve Better

(Since this might be one of my last posts for a while, I’m reposting it here)

You know, I am a young female queer professor and I am tired of going through this in everyday life: white, middle-aged men holding the power—to the purse strings, to the tenure track jobs, to the representation we get.

We live in a world made by them, for them, and we as non-heteronormative people, we amazingly smart, creative people (so many of us female-identified), we deserve better. We deserve better in our jobs and relationships and definitely in our fandom, leisure, and media. So don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

This is about ethics. I do not care if creators “lie” to protect plot secrets. Why would you want to be lied to, in the first place, about things that are core to you, such as queer representation, LGBTQIA rights, women’s power, fucking social justice? We deserve better than that.

As male creators in a position of power, if you belittle a minority group, for whatever reason, and more pointedly for reasons that are quite narcissistic and petty (”to protect a plot twist”) then you are perpetrating the abuse that has been historically imposed upon them. You become part of the problem, not the solution, regardless of how wonderfully progressive your media work might turn out to be. Guess what: we deserve better.

So whatever you do as a fan—continue to support the show, walk away, pick and choose your battles—that’s fine. But remember: just because you are female or queer or any other form of intersectional minority does NOT mean you deserve to be treated like this by white men in positions of power, or that you should feel it is compulsory to accept this behavior from them. Not here, not anywhere.

You deserve better.

New Canon Incoming

So for anyone new to fandom, here’s what’s going to happen: the new series will air, and a lot of really committed, vocal, prominent fans will hate it.

They will loudly and frequently express their disappointment and anger. They will feel betrayed by the writers, the actors, the directors, and by every fan who doesn’t feel the same way. The words “out of character” will be batted around in relation to the new series. You will hear: “They did it all wrong! Don’t they know these characters at all?”

Disappointed fans will complain loudly for X amount of time, attempting to convince others that the new series had ruined everything that came before, after which they will flame out as hard and brilliantly as they can. It will feel like a big deal. It will feel like a big loss, like the fandom is bleeding out, like it’s shrinking. Like it’s not as good as it used to be.

Be not afraid. This happens every time there’s new canon. Rest assured that it always happens, and it isn’t a special feature of any one fandom. Some people cannot handle more story, no matter how good or well-constructed that story is. If it isn’t what they were expecting, if the characters change and grow, some fans cannot and will not cope. And that’s okay! Follow your bliss, friend!

But so many more people will flood into the fandom. Fandoms double, or triple, or more in size when there’s new canon. There will be new artists, new writers, new meta thinkers. They will bring us new perspectives, and you will make new friends. Lots of them!

Looking forward to new canon is also looking forward to a whole new fannish culture. Are you ready?
