The significance of the rattle drum/toy (拨浪鼓/撥浪鼓) in the donghua/anime
Ok, even though this is a filler scene in the donghua/anime, I still appreciate it. Omg, to think that ‘the rattle drum’ hold such a significant meaning behind Wangxian, I can’t help but just feel touched by it… Thank you, anime team for giving us this!!!
When Wei Ying saw the rattle drum (toy), he ran for it,
And played with it on his end, he said he didn’t understand why he liked it so much
When he turned around and gave Lan Zhan that bright smile of his (I’m like ;_; Wei Ying, please smile more, you really have suffered enough ;_; )
But it was really adorable/wangxian-like, for Wei Ying to ask Lan Zhan to buy this (as a gift) for him:
And then Lan Zhan smiled at Wei Ying for asking him to gift him this rattle drum (he/Lan Zhan smiled!!!!! Only Wei Ying can make Lan Zhan smile like this!!!! <3 <3 )
And Lan Zhan said “ok” to Wei Ying’s request, I’m really in fangirl mode, I was sad that we didn’t get much Wangxian moments in Season 2, let alone, we didn’t get the whole scene where Lan Zhan wait for Wei Ying at the decided location, and no bridal carry T~T but that all aside, I’m happy they give us something like this scene to make up for this season for me, and to think that it holds such a significance that only the donghua offers, just makes me be thankful to them for giving me something like this.
Poor Wei Ying, being out in the cold, he met this ‘myserious young boy’ outside, in the cold (snowy day), ofcourse we all know who this boy is:
And Wei Ying, in the cold, uses straw figures to represent his dad, mum and himself T~T
And Lil Lan Zhan was the one who gave Lil Wei Ying this Rattle Drum when he was young ;_;
When I first watched this flashback, I didn’t know, but after watching this final episode, I finally realized how significant this rattle drum (撥浪鼓) it is to the donghua Wangxian. It represents something which lil Wei Ying received the very first time from someone who showed him kindness, when he was still out in the street, in the cold (while snowing), yet, despite him being all alone, despite him being in the cold, and being hungry on his end T~T This someone (Lil Lan Zhan) gifted Lil Wei Ying this rattle drum (toy), and even though Wei Ying’s memories isn’t that great in remembering these things, but the core to his character is still being portrayed nicely to that point that, he really likes this rattle drum toy on his end. It was probably the first toy he ever got ever since his parents passed away T~T
And so many years later, after everything, life/death, he asked the same person (Lan Zhan) to get him this rattle-toy again. If this isn’t fated/destiny, I don’t know what is. Wangxian is just so meant to be, I swear! Don’t break this pairing apart, but Thank you, Donghua team for giving us something as an addition to the canon source! <3
P.S: Also, the Yunmeng Jiang Silver Bell, which Lan Zhan kept with him all this time since Season 1, is also a donghua addition to the canon source. This never happened in the novel, but it’s another moment I really appreciate on my end, because it shows pro-wangxian for me:
Because when Lan Zhan finally got the chance to return this to Wei Ying, 13 years later [lol, Lan Zhan why did it took you this long to return this to Wei Ying? > w < ],
13 years later, even after Wei Ying knowing that Lan Zhan have kept this silver bell all these years:
He still let him continue to hold onto this on his end:
And I know Lan Zhan wasn’t expecting Wei Ying to let him continue to hold onto this, otherwise, he wouldn’t have ‘take time to actually believe this is actually happening’, you, well I can really see this in his subtle expression here
I do think, the selfish side to him wants to continue to hold onto anything that links him to Wei Ying, but the honourable side to him wanted to do the right thing, and return this Silver Bell to him because this is something that belongs to Wei Ying, and is important to him; so when Wei Ying let him keep it, I believe Lan Zhan was happy, deep down <3
Anyways, in the overall Season 2 does have a lot of fillers which doesn’t exactly follow the events of the Novel, but all in all, I still love the donghua on my end. It’s really too bad there’s only 8 episodes for Season 2, because I don’t want to part from it T~T. I am thankful that in the final episode we have some sweet Wangxian moments and that totally makes up for all the dark/pain that I have to go through, seeing the flashbacks when Wei Ying was in his Yiling Patriarch days T~T
