My poster for my animation graduation movie ‘Onze kleine deugniet’.

It’s about a boy who doesn’t get a grip on his life. The more he loses his grip, the more he cares for his family. Should we punish him for his behavior of should we cheer for his good behavior? And even more important: is there an excuse thinkable for his actions?

My paper for my movie. I really wanted this in the same style as my movie. This coherent style provides stability for the eye. I think I’m also going to print some stickers or something!

The one on top is the average style of the movie. Low on background with some ink to create space. Because the movie is rotoscoped, this open space leaves room for the viewer’s imagination and interpretation.

The one in the middle is my favourite typography part of the movie. ‘We can take an example’ is says.

The last frame is actually in the beginning of the the movie. the colours represent the emotions that some with the situation.

Is PDD-nos an excuse?

When the bad things have been told and an explanation has been given, we should think about whether his autism is an excuse. Maybe his bad behavior is to blame on his parents for not giving him enough guidance, or on himself. In the end he should be old enough to know what’s right and what’s wrong. And what would be an appropriated punishment?

A young boy is being judged on his actions. But never his good ones. We only get punished, never praised. That’s something to think about as well. So when we’ve seen that this boy is stealing and committing other small crimes, we see him giving his food to a poor man. How many of us do that?

Why so extreem?

This is showing when the main character kicks a hole in the door after he’s been told he can’t get toast.

The first few times the whole gets bigger and bigger. Last three times the words are showing. Then we get a camera zoom into the hole and see that his kicking is changing into skating.

Photoshop brush test for my typography.

Because I want to use analog textures I’ve made some interesting samples. I want my background for the typography rough, that makes the letters more alive. Every color I’m using in my typography has its own meaning. I’m using the colors to represent emotions and the size of the letters for the importance of a word in a sentence.

You like grilled sandwiches? I do! Jan Bons is a big inspiration for me during this project. His hand made abstract typography makes me so happy for some unknown reason. The illustrations I made is based on a post stamp for 5-5. It’s awesome :) (last image).
