Objects & History
So this afternoon I was taking this photo of these old tools belonging to my dad and grandfathers. At one point I put the gloves on to straighten out the leather and boom, I had this thought like who else has put their hand in here. Like this energy came through me, not vivid images or flash backs but just a sense of history. Then i started thinking about what significant things all these tools have done. They have created objects but they have no memory. People I have never even seen or met have handled these tools and built things but I can know what without another source.Â
After silversmithing class one night, my mum tells me her father was a panel beater. âItâs in your bloodâ she said, inferring my fascination with how metal works was somehow genetic. But I feel that its the energy of the tools, especially hand tools rather than power tools. The energy we put through the tool to do the work. Is it stored? Is it echoed? Heirlooms seem to be the way humans communicate family history.Â
