Kailea |~|
The comet came and went. And when it was gone, I was able to find my siblings and they explained to me how Aang came back to face the Fire Lord. And I explained to them mine and Zuko's battle with Azula. All of us followed our destinies and won our battles to win the war. The Fire Lord was no more and Aang brought balance to the world.
A day has passed since then, and it was time for Zuko's coronation as Fire Lord. All the armies from the four nations had come to celebrate the beginning of a new era, including my dad and his fellow soldiers. But before I decided to say hello, I knew I had one other thing to take care of. I made my way through the Fire Nation palace and found an injured prince trying to get dressed for his special day.
"Hey, don't hurt yourself trying to get dressed," I said as I walked up to him. "That would be pretty embarrassing, wouldn't it?"
We shared a small laugh as I helped him put on his robe.
"Thank you," he said.
"Of course," I said. "This is the least I should do for you."
"No, I mean, for everything," he said. "For always being there for me, for showing me the right path, for forgiving me, and for loving me the way that you do."
I felt myself blush from his statement.
"Then, thank you, too," I said. "For loving me back."
Zuko wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me in for a kiss before we embraced for a few moments.
"All right," I said. "I have to go. I know my dad is waiting for me."
Zuko nodded and I raced out of the palace and into the crowd outside. I looked around and soon found my dad. We locked eyes and I ran to him for a hug.
"There she is," he said and we released. "I knew you'd show up soon."
"Yeah, sorry, I had to... uh..."
"Tend to your Fire Nation boyfriend?" Sokka teased.
I looked at him, glared, and gave a hard punch to his arm.
"Ow!"
"Really? Zuko?" my dad raised an eyebrow at me.
"Hey! We all know he's a good guy," I defended and looked at Dad. "And he helped get you out of prison!"
"Oh, yeah, that's right," my dad rubbed the back of his neck. "It's just, I never thought my kid would be in relations with someone from the Fire Nation. Let alone someone from the royal family."
"Trust me, at first, I thought it was never gonna happen," I laughed. "But, he changed. And, at the same time, he captured my heart."
Dad smiled, "Whatever makes you happy, sweetheart."
I smiled back at him.
[~][~][~]
All of us were told to stand in a line with our respected people from our nation just before the Fire Lord would be presented. After everyone stood ready and attentive, Zuko came walking out dressed in Fire Nation robes with his hair up in a bun. We all cheered for him.
"Please," he raised his hand. "The real hero... is the Avatar."
The crowd cheered even more as Aang walked out dressed in the robes of his ancient people, the Monks. He smiled as he stood next to Zuko.
"Today, this war is finally over!" Zuko announced. "I promised my uncle that I would restore the honor of the Fire Nation and I will. The road ahead of us is challenging. A hundred years of fighting has left the world scarred and divided. But with the Avatar's help, we can get it back on the right path, and begin a new era of love and peace."
One of the Fire Sages started to walk over to Zuko as he knelt down.
"All hail Fire Lord Zuko!" the sage said as he placed the crown in Zuko's hair.
The crowd cheered as Zuko stood up and smiled as he and Aang stood together.
[~][~][~]
A few days had passed since Zuko's coronation, and all of us are currently visiting Iroh at his house in the upper ring of Ba Sing Se. Zuko had just made tea and was passing a cup around to everyone. Iroh was playing a soft tune on the tsungi horn, Aang was playing with Momo, Suki was teaching me how to play pai sho, and Katara was watching us.
"Zuko! Stop moving!" Sokka demanded from his little desk. "I'm trying to capture the moment. I wanted to do a painting so we'd always remember the good times together."
"That's very thoughtful of you, Sokka," Katara smiled as she took a glance at the painting. "Wait, why did you give me Momo's ears?"
This piqued everyone's curiosity and caused us to crowd around Sokka and his painting.
"Those are your hair loopies," he explained.
"At least you don't look like a porcupine," said Zuko. "My hair is not that spiky."
"Why do my braids look like horns?" I asked.
"Why did you paint me fire bending?" Suki asked.
"I thought it looked more exciting that way," said Sokka. "...Oh, you think you could do a better job, Momo?"
"Hey, my belly is not that big anymoreβ I've really trimmed down," Iroh pointed.
"Well, I think you all look perfect!" Toph exclaimed making us all laugh.
When everything calmed down, I walked up to Zuko as he sat near a window and stared out of it. When I sat next to him, he turned and smiled at me.
I lightly giggled, "You seem happy."
Zuko planted a small kiss on my cheek, "I am happy."
Zuko slowly placed a hand on the back of my head and pulled me in for a deep, loving kiss that felt as if it lasted for a lifetime.
"I love you."

Kailea |~|
Halfway to the Fire Nation and the comet had already come and illuminated the sky behind us. The whole world was turning into a shade of red, similar to when Zhao killed the Moon Spirit. I looked behind me to see the comet before glancing at Zuko to see him spacing out.
"Are you okay?" I asked as I jumped from the saddle to Zuko.
"I'm just... I'm worried about Aang," he said. "What if he doesn't have the guts to take out my father? What if he loses?"
"...Speaking honestly, I haven't thought about it," I said. "Because I believe with all my heart that Aang will come back and he'll win."
I faced forward, trying to get the thought of Aang losing out of my head. Suddenly, I felt Zuko's arm around my shoulders and he pulled me close to place a kiss on my temple.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have made you worry," he said.
"I'm fine," I told him. "...Are you ready to face your sister?"
"Yeah... I am."
[~][~][~]
When we finally made it to the Fire Nation palace, the whole place was deserted except for Azula and the Fire Sages that stood beside her for her coronation. They all stared at us as Appa landed in front of them.
"Sorry, but you're not gonna become Fire Lord today," Zuko said to Azula before he dismounted Appa. "I am."
"You're hilarious," Azula mockingly laughed.
I quickly dismounted Appa and stood next to Zuko.
"And you're going down..." I told her.
"...Wait," Azula stopped the man behind her from putting on her crown. "You want to be Fire Lord? Fine, let's settle this. Just you and me, brother, the showdown that was always meant to beβ Agni Kai!"
"...You're on."
I quickly looked over at Zuko, "What're you talking about? We're supposed to take her on together. She's just trying to get to you."
"I know, but I can take her this time," said Zuko.
"But Iroh said that you needed help, that's why I'm here," I explained.
"There's something off about her," he admitted. "I can't explain it, but she's slipping. And this way, no one else has to get hurt."
I looked back at Azula and took in her appearance. Her usual tight, sleek bun is now in tatters with random strands of hair falling out in places and her bangs are uneven. She stood a bit skewed and her demeaning smirk is now a full-on evil smile that she's having trouble hiding.
I can see what he means by 'she's slipping'.
"Okay, but... don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it," I told him.
Azula and Zuko walked to opposite ends of the courtyard as the Fire Sages disappeared. As Zuko and Azula knelt in preparation for the Agni Kai, I got onto my knees in front of Zuko and waited for him to raise his head. When he did raise his head and looked into my eyes, I held his jaw with both my hands and pulled him in for a serious kiss.
"I love you," I said after we pulled away.
"I love you too," he said before he and Azula rose to their feet.
"I'm sorry it has to end this way, brother," Azula said as she tossed her robe to the side.
"No, you're not," Zuko stated simply as he stood, ready to battle.
Azula mirrored Zuko's stance before sending a stream of blue flames at him. Zuko blocked her attack by creating a wall of his own flames. I watched in amazement as the bicolored flames clashed together, flew by, and lit nearby structures on fire. Despite standing far from the fire, I could still feel the heat on my face and hands.
I could see Azula's mind slipping from her grasp as she could feel herself losing to her brother. She was becoming tired while Zuko stayed firm and strong. Azula tried to use her fire to glide closer to Zuko, but she was unsuccessful and Zuko was able to trip her, causing her to skip across the ground.
"No lightning today?" Zuko called to her. "What's the matter? Afraid I'll redirect it?"
I came closer to the Agni Kai, thinking that it was just about over.
"Oh, I'll show you lightning!" Azula exclaimed.
Azula moved her arms around her body as lightning followed her fingertips. She was about to point her fingers at Zuko to shoot the electricity at him, but her eyes suddenly shifted to me and she smiled. Her fingertips quickly pointed at me, and frozen in fear, I watched as lightning came shooting towards me but was stopped by Zuko jumping in front of the blast. He fell to the ground, groaning in pain.
"Zuko!" I cried.
I went to run up to him but was interrupted by a blast of blue fire. I looked at Azula as she laughed evilly and began to stumble towards me. Using her bending, she propelled herself through the air as she chased and fired blasts at me. I was able to dodge all of her attacks but she was able to jump onto the roof of the courtyard structure and charge a lightning blast as I just stared at her, shocked.
"I'd rather our family physician look after little Zuzu, if you don't mind..!" Azula fired a strike of lightning.
As the blast neared me, I quickly used the water in the canal beside me to block it before running away and hiding behind a nearby pillar.
"Zuzu, you don't look so good," Azula called after taking a break from attacking me.
I glanced at her from behind the pillar before she shot another blast of lightning at me. I ran two pillars down as the lightning completely destroyed the previous pillar. Taking this opportunity of her catching her breath, I bended a large wave of water from the canal and launched it at her spot on the roof; she wasn't there.
I paused before I heard the sound of her bending coming from behind me. She was using her bending to propel herself towards me again, so I quickly ran away from her and used my water bending to create a few ramps of ice which allowed me to travel faster. I soon ran out of water and Azula fired a giant stream of fire at me.
Before the stream disappeared, I was able to wander under one of the courtyard's structures and found a grate; under the grate was water. The gears in my head began to turn as I looked up and spotted some chain hanging on the wall. That's when I knew what I had to do. I rushed over to the chain and grabbed it.
"There you are, you filthy peasant," Azula greeted as she approached me from behind a pillar.
We both stood on either side of the grate and I knew I had to get her closer. I shot a few small streams of water at her which made her dodge-roll toward me. I stepped onto the grate which made her face me and try to shoot me with lightning, but before she could fire, I took a deep breath, brought up the water from under the grate, and froze the both of us inside it.
When I knew my plan had worked as it should, I let my deep breath out and had it surround me to turn the ice into water and allow me to move. I quickly used the chain that I had in my hands to tie together Azula's arms and tie her to the grate. When I knew it was secure, I unfroze the both of us. When the ice and water were gone, I took a few deep breaths before angrily glaring at Azula and running up to Zuko.
Please be okay, please be okay!
When I made it up to him, he was still moving, but his eyes were closed. I flipped him onto his back and brought my hands, and some water, to his scar located right in the middle of his chest. I began to heal his wound and I felt his body relax. I looked up at his face and saw that he opened his eyes. Happy tears started to stream down my face.
"Kailea..." he whispered.
"Zuko," I said as I stopped healing him and helped him sit up. "I'm so happy that you're okay."
Zuko slowly brought his hand to the back of my head and placed his forehead against mine.
"Yeah, I'm okay, thanks to you," he said.
"I should be saying that to you," I cried.
Together, we stood up and walked up to Azula as she fought against her chains and cried in agony.
Azula is defeated... our job is done...

Kailea |~|
The night had passed quickly, and now, all of use were preparing for our departure for the Fire Nation to end the Fire Lord.
"Okay, that's everything!" Sokka announced after checking our supplies.
"No, it's not. Where's Aang?" Toph asked.
We all shared a confused look before running around the house, looking for the Avatar.
"Aang?" Zuko called as we ran up the stairs. "Aang!"
"Come on, lazy bones, let's go!" Toph yelled.
There was no response. We all split up and quickly searched around the beach house.
"He left his staff," Sokka said as we all met up on one of the balconies. "That's so strange."
"Aang's not in the house. Let's check the beach," said Zuko.
When we made it out of the beach house, we found a trail of footprints that led straight into the ocean.
"Look! There's his footprints," Sokka pointed. "The trail ends here."
"So, he went for a midnight swim and never came back?" Suki asked.
"Maybe he was captured," said Katara.
"But wouldn't there be more than one pair of footprints?" I asked.
"She's right, there should be signs of a struggle but there isn't," Sokka explained.
"I bet he ran away again," said Toph.
"Nuh-uh. He left his glider and Appa," Sokka disagreed.
"Then what do you think happened to him, oh, sleuthy one?" Toph frowned.
"It's pretty obvious," said Sokka. "Aang mysteriously disappears before an important battle? He's definitely on a spirit world journey."
"But if he was, wouldn't his body still be here?" Zuko asked.
"Oh, yeah, I forgot about that..."
"Then he's gotta be somewhere on Ember Island," said Katara. "Let's split up and look for him."
"I'm going with Zuko!" Toph exclaimed as she hugged Zuko's arm.
We all gave her a quizzical glance as Zuko blushed.
"What?" Toph asked. "Everyone else went on a life-changing field trip with Zuko. Now it's my turn."
"...Um, all right," Sokka drawled. "So, Zuko and Toph will search the shore, Katara and Suki will search in the town on Ember Island, and Kailea and I will take Appa to search the water. Let's go."
Everyone quickly split up and began to search. As Sokka flew Appa over the water of the beach, I used my water bending to glide across the water to get a clearer view. About an hour of searching passed before we knew that we searched everywhere that we could, so we met up with everyone else back at the beach house.
"Judging by the looks on your faces, I'm guessing you guys didn't find Aang, either," Sokka said as he landed Appa in front of everyone.
"No," Zuko stated as Sokka and I dismounted. "It's like he just... disappeared."
"Hey, wait a minute," said Toph. "Has anyone noticed that Momo is missing, too?"
"Oh, no!" Sokka yelled. "I knew it was only a matter of time! Appa ate Momo! Momo, I'm coming for you, buddy!"
Sokka freaked out as he began to crawl into Appa's mouth.
"Sokka, Appa didn't eat Momo. He's probably with Aang," Katara explained.
"That's just what Appa wants you to think!"
"Get out of the bison's mouth, Sokka," Zuko demanded. "We have a real problem here. Aang is nowhere to be found and the comet is only two days away."
"Then, what should we do?" I asked and we all stared at him.
"I don't know... Why are you all looking at me?"
"Well, you are kind of the expert on tracking Aang," said Katara.
"Yeah, if anyone's got experience hunting the Avatar, it's you," said Toph.
Zuko took a moment to think before he told us all to get on Appa. Zuko took the reins and had Appa fly towards the Earth Kingdom.
"Why do you think Aang would be in the Earth Kingdom?" I asked Zuko.
"Seriously, Zuko, there's no way Aang's there," said Sokka.
"Just trust me," said Zuko.
[~][~][~]
After flying for hours, we finally landed in the middle of a forest inside the Earth Kingdom where a large tavern was located. As we approached the tavern, memories began to flood my mind.
Oh, I know what we're doing now...
Zuko led the way inside the tavern with all of us closely behind him.
"And the reason you brought us to a seedy Earth Kingdom tavern is what now?" Katara raised an eyebrow.
"June," Zuko pointed.
In the middle of the tavern, June sat at a small wooden table with a teacup in her hand. A man tried to attack her, but she easily overpowered him with a simple kick.
"Oh, yeah, that weird bounty hunter with the giant mole," said Sokka.
"Mole? Her skin is flawless," said Katara as June fought off another attacker.
"No, she has this giant mole-creature that she rides around on," Sokka explained.
"It's called a shirsu, and it can track any scent you give to it," I explained.
"And it's the only animal that can track Aang's scent anywhere in the world," Zuko added. "It's the one shot we have of finding him."
We all looked back at June to watch her as she throws her teacup in the air, throws the attacker into a nearby table, catches her teacup, and drinks the remaining tea from it.
"I don't know who this June lady is, but I like her," Toph smiled.
"Hey, I remember her, she helped you attack us," Sokka frowned.
"Yep, back in the good old days," Zuko said as we approached June.
"Oh, great, it's Prince Pouty," she said. "Where's your creepy grandpa?"
"He's my uncle. And he's not here."
June glanced between me and Zuko, "I see you worked things out with your girlfriend."
Both Zuko and I blushed as we shyly glanced around the tavern, not knowing what to say at the strange comment.
"Oh, I was just teasing! I didn't know you two were actually into each other!" June lightly laughed.
"Look, we need your help," Zuko changed the subject. "We need to find the Avatar."
"Hm, doesn't sound too fun," said June.
Zuko visibly holds himself back from exploding at June.
"Does the end of the world sound like more fun?"
June takes a moment to think it over before leading the way outside the tavern, where Appa and Nyla were making friends with each other.
"Nyla?" June called before tossing a piece of steak at the animal. "Whose my little snuffly-wuffly? Whoa! Careful there!"
The shirsu accidentally shot its tongue out as June was petting it.
"Okay, so who's got something with the Avatar's scent on it?" June ushered us forward.
"I have Aang's staff," said Katara.
June took the staff from Katara and held it up to the shirshu's nose. Nyla took a few sniffs before walking in a large circle and then lying down on the ground, whimpering.
"Um, so, what's happening?" I asked. "Did it find anything?"
"Nope, your friend's gone," said June.
"We know he's gone, that's why we're trying to find him," said Toph.
"No, I mean, he's gone-gone. He doesn't exist."
What? How could Aang not exist? We were with him yesterday!
"What do you mean Aang doesn't exist?" Sokka asked. "Do you mean he's, you know, dead?"
"Nope, we could find him if he were dead," June explained. "Oh, it's a real headscratcher. See ya."
"Helpful. Real helpful," Toph crossed her arms.
"Wait, I have another idea," Zuko stopped June from walking away. "There's only one other person in this world who can help us face the Fire Lord. I'll be right back with a smell sample."
Zuko hopped onto Appa's saddle and rummaged around a bit before coming back with Iroh's old, smelly sandal; back from when he was captured by earth benders.
"You saved your uncle's sweaty sandal?" Sokka cringed.
"I think it's kind of sweet," said Toph.
"Just hurry up and smell the sandal," I said to June and her shirshu.
Nyla suddenly lunged forward and sniffed the sandal.
"Let's do this," said June.
June whipped Nyla's reins and the two took off.
"Hey, wait up!" Zuko called before we all mounted Appa and flew after them.
We followed the shirshu all day, all the way to the center of the Earth Kingdom, to a broken part of the wall of Ba Sing Se.
"Your uncle's somewhere beyond the wall," June explained as Nyla clawed at the rubble. "Nyla's getting twitchy, so it can't be too far. Good luck."
June whipped the shishu's reins and disappeared into the distance.
"...It's been a long day. Let's camp and start our search again at dawn," said Zuko.
[~][~][~]
Collectively, we all crashed on Appa's soft fur pelt and fell asleep; except for Toph who prefers the ground. We all were woken up with a start when Toph's rock tent sunk into the ground and we were surrounded in a ring of fire. Looking around to see our attackers, we spotted a few men dressed in blue and white robes standing on some rubble outside of the fire.
"Well, look who's here," one of the men laughed.
The fire disappeared and the men climbed down the rubble to meet with us. Upon closer inspection, there were five men. Three I did not recognize, but two of them were Master Piandao, the swordsman, and Master Katuk, my water bending teacher.
Master Katuk! It's been so long, I can't believe it!
"What's going on?" Toph asked. "We're surrounded by old people."
"Toph, that's rude," I scolded.
"Not just any old people," said Katara. "These are great masters and friends of ours. Pakku."
Katara approached one of the men and bowed.
"It is respectful to bow to an old master," the man bowed back. "But how about a hug for your new grandfather?"
"Wait, what?" I yelled.
"That's so exciting!" Katara hugged Pakku. "You and Gran Gran must be so happy to have found each other again."
"Huh? Hold onβ"
"I made her a new betrothal necklace and everything," Pakku explained.
"Welcome to the family, Gramp-Gramp!" Sokka hugged Pakku.
"You can still just call me Pakku."
"Please! Someone explain..." I sighed.
"Kailea, Master Pakku is from the North Pole and we met him when we were looking for a water bending teacher for Aang," said Katara. "He and Gran Gran were supposed to be married when they were younger but things didn't work out, but now they're getting married..!"
Wow... this is kinda crazy...
"That's... great," I said as I walked up to Pakku. "It's nice to meet you, Pakku."
I bowed towards Master Pakku and he quickly returned it before pulling me into a loving hug.
"Your grandmother has said much about you," he said. "I'm glad to finally meet you in person."
I smiled as I returned the hug. We soon separated and Katara continued to introduce the masters.
"And this was Aang's first fire bending teacher," she introduced.
"Jeong-Jeong," he smiled and bowed.
"And... I'm not sure who this man is," Katara pointed at Master Katuk.
"This was my water bending teacher, Katara," I introduced before turning to him and bowing. "Master Katuk, it's good to see you again."
"Same to you, Kailea," Katuk returned the bow.
"Master Piandao," Sokka bowed to his master.
"Hello, Sokka," Piandao bowed back.
"So, wait, how do you all know each other?" Suki asked.
"All old people know each other, don't you know that?" the last man said to us.
"We're all a part of the same ancient secret society, a group that transcends the divisions of the four nations," Master Piandao explained.
"The Order of the White Lotus," Zuko and I said together.
"That's the one."
"The White Lotus has always been about philosophy, and beauty, and truth," Jeong-Jeong explained. "But about a month ago, a call went out that we were needed for something important."
"It came from our Grand Lotus, your uncle, Iroh of the Fire Nation," Master Pakku told Zuko.
"Well, that's who we're looking for," said Toph.
"Then we'll take you to him," said Master Katuk.
"Wait, someone's missing from your group, someone very important," the man I do not know said. "Where's Momo?"
"He's gone," said Sokka. "And so is Aang."
"Oh, well," he said. "So long as they have each other, I'm sure we have nothing to worry about. Let's go!"
The man shot into the air using his earth bending, and cackled wildly as he did so.
[~][~][~]
"So, Bumi, how did you end up escaping your imprisonment in Omashu?" Sokka asked.
I learned a few minutes ago that the man that I did not know was named Bumi and that he was the king of the Earth Kingdom city, Omashu.
I thought I recognized him from the Ember Island play, but I don't trust anything that they show me...
"Escape? I didn't escape," said Bumi. "Everybody else escaped. There I was, back in Omashu, waiting for just the right moment. I didn't know what or when, but I knew I'd know it when I knew it. When I saw the eclipse, I broke myself free from my cage and fought off the fire benders who had lost their bending. I destroyed their machinery, chased them out of Omashu, and used their Fire Lord Ozai statue to destroy the bridge from Omashu to the rest of the world; I took back my city."
"Wow, you took back your whole city all by yourself," Suki awed.
"So what about you guys?" Bumi asked. "Did you do anything interesting on the day of the eclipse?"
Zuko and Sokka looked at each other.
"Nah."
"No, not really."
[~][~][~]
The masters led us all the way to a small camp full of white tents that held other White Lotus members. Bumi earth bended the rock out of our way so that we could enter with ease.
"Well, here we are," said Bumi. "Welcome to old people camp."
"Where... Where is he?" Zuko asked as we entered the camp.
"Your uncle's in there, Prince Zuko," Master Katuk pointed forward at one of the larger tents.
Zuko paused before walking up to the tent and taking a seat outside of the door. Partly knowing how he was feeling, I walked up and sat beside him.
"Zuko, what's wrong?" I asked.
"He hates me," Zuko mumbled. "I know he does. He loved me and supported me in every way he could, and I still turned against him. How can I even face him?"
"Zuko, your uncle loves you, I know he does," I told him. "All that you've done, from the mistakes to the successes, your uncle is proud of you. Because you figured out who you are and what you needed to do. And I know how badly he wants to see you right now."
"...You really think he wants to see me?" Zuko glanced at me with tears in his eyes.
"Of course," I said. "Without a doubt."
Taking a deep breath, Zuko stood up and walked into Iroh's tent.
[~][~][~]
Zuko had been in there all night and had not come out until he and Iroh emerged to have some breakfast. When I saw the two exit the tent, I made my way up to Iroh. Without any words, Iroh and I embraced in a strong hug.
"It's great to see you, Iroh," I said, keeping some tears in. "I'm glad to see that you're okay."
"I am happy, too, Kailea," said Iroh. "You kept your promise and helped my nephew become who he is."
We separated.
"Hmm, well, there was some time when I pushed him away," I said. "But, we did eventually find each other again."
Zuko and I looked at each other and smiled. After our small reunion together as uncle, nephew, and friend, we met up with everyone else during breakfast to discuss our problem of the missing Avatar.
"Uncle, you're the only person other than the Avatar who can possibly defeat the Father Lord," said Zuko.
Huh..?
"You mean the Fire Lord," Toph corrected.
"That's what I just said..!"
Iroh hummed.
"We need you to come with us," Zuko insisted.
"No, Zuko," Iroh refused. "It won't turn out well."
"You can beat him and we'll be there to help," Zuko persisted.
"Even if I did defeat Ozai, and I don't know that I could, it would be the wrong way to end a war," Iroh explained. "History will see it as just more senseless violence, a brother killing a brother to grab power. The only way for this war to end peacefully is for the Avatar to defeat the Fire Lord."
"And then... then would you come and take your rightful place on the throne?" Zuko asked.
"No. Someone new must take the throneβ an idealist with a pure heart and unquestionable honor. It has to be you, Prince Zuko."
From a prince to a lord... I think he's ready.
"Unquestionable honor?" Zuko asked. "But I've made so many mistakes."
"Yes, you have," said Iroh. "You've struggled and you've suffered, but you have always followed your own path. You restored your own honor, and only you can restore the honor of the Fire Nation."
"...I'll try, Uncle."
"Well, what if Aang doesn't come back?" Toph asked.
"Sozin's Comet is arriving and our destinies are upon us," said Iroh. "Aang will face the Fire Lord. When I was a boy, I had a vision that I would one day take Ba Sing Se. Only now do I see that my destiny is to take it back from the Fire Nation, so the Earth Kingdom can be free again."
"That's why you gathered the members of the White Lotus," said Suki.
"Yes. Zuko, you must return to the Fire Nation, so that when the Fire Lord falls, you can assume the throne and restore peace and order. But Azula will be there waiting for you."
"I can handle Azula," Zuko frowned.
"Not alone. You'll need help."
"...You're right."
"Let me guess, this is where I come in," I smiled.
"No," said Zuko. "Azula is dangerous and I don't want you getting hurt."
I look up at Zuko and raised my eyebrow.
"You're an idiot if you think I'm going to let you face Azula by yourself or bring someone else with you," I told him. "I want to help you and I want to be by your side when you defeat her."
Zuko stared down at me, and I could almost see his thoughts through his eyes.
He sighed, "Fine, we'll face Azula together."
I smiled.
"What about us?" Sokka asked. "What's our destiny today?"
"What do you think it is?" Iroh smirked.
"I think that... even though we don't know where Aang is, we need to do everything we can to stop the airship fleet," Sokka answered.
"And that means, when Aang does face the Fire Lord, we'll be right there if he needs us," Toph smiled.
[~][~][~]
After breakfast, the members of the White Lotus helped all of us get ready for our journeys during the comet. Master Piandao helped get Sokka, Katara, Toph, and Suki a pair of eel hounds and a map to the airships while Iroh and Bumi set me and Zuko up with some supplies.
"This goes without saying, but, good luck," I said to Sokka and Katara. "And stay safe."
"Right back at ya, Sis," Sokka smiled before embracing me.
We separated and then Katara and I embraced.
"Be strong, Azula shouldn't be taken lightly," Katara told me.
We separated.
"Trust me, I know," I said. "...I love you both."
"We love you, too," Sokka said before we parted way.
I made my way over to Zuko, who was sitting at Appa's reins, talking to Iroh and Bumi.
"So, if I'm gonna be Fire Lord after the war's over, what're you gonna do?" Zuko asked Iroh as I mounted Appa.
"After I reconquer Ba Sing Se, I am going to reconquer my tea shop and I am going to play pai sho every day," Iroh smiled.
Zuko and I smiled back at him before glancing at Sokka, Katara, Toph, and Suki, who were split in between two eel hounds.
"Goodbye, General Iroh," said Katara.
"Goodbye, everyone," said Iroh. "Today, destiny is our friend. I know it."
Together, the eel hounds took off and Appa lept into the sky.

Chapter 15-To End the Melon Lord
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
A little over a week has passed since Zuko and I finally made up. Explaining it to everyone was really... embarrassing. Especially since everyone thought it was a joke at first and when they finally realized that we were being serious, they all freaked out.
I suppose it is a bit... surprising. But I feel like everyone has kind of overreacted. Especially Sokka.
When everyone finally came to terms with it, it was actually really nice. It wasn't weird for Zuko and I to show affection towards one another, or for me to wear my necklace.
I feel so... I don't know... elated now that I've finally come to forgive Zuko and... love him again.
As of the moment, all of us were watching as Zuko trained Aang in fire bending just outside of the beach house. A lot of us were wondering why Zuko was pushing him so hard, but then again, none of us could really tell him about Aang's plan to sit out during the comet.
"More ferocious!" Zuko demanded. "Imagine striking through your opponent's heart."
"...I'm trying," Aang groaned.
"Now, let me hear you roar like a tiger-dillo!" Zuko exclaimed.
Aang spun around and shot a small amount of fire from both of his hands and his mouth.
"That sounded pathetic," said Zuko. "I said, roar!"
Aang repeated his earlier actions, but now fire streamed from his palms and mouth as he roared; scaring Momo. Zuko nodded in approval.
"Who wants a nice cool glass of watermelon juice?" Katara asked.
"Ooh, ooh, me, me, me!" Aang went to run over to us but was stopped by Zuko.
"Hey, your lesson's not over yet! Get back here!"
"Come on, Zuko. Just take a break. What's the big deal?" Suki said.
"Fine," Zuko let Aang go. "If you wanna lounge around like a bunch of snail sloths all day, then go ahead!"
Zuko huffed before stomping away.
"Maybe Zuko's right," said Sokka. "Sitting around the house has made us pretty lazy. But I know just the thing to change thatβ Beach party!"
All of us, except for Zuko, rushed down to the beach in our bathing suits. Sokka dove into the ocean before gathering seaweed for something, Suki lied on a beach towel onshore, and Katara made a surfboard out of ice that she used to ride the waves that I created.
"Get ready for a big one, Katara!" I exclaimed as I began to bend the seawater into a large wave.
"Bring it, Kailea!" Katara cheered before gliding across the top to the wave and jumping into the air.
Once Katara landed back on the calm ocean surface, I walked over to Toph to see how she was doing.
"Check out my Appa sand-sculpture!" Aang called to us.
Toph and I walked over to see Aang's pretty impressive sculpture.
"Awesome, Aang! Quite impressive," I applauded.
"Not bad, Baldy," said Toph. "But I've been working on my sand bending. You're gonna love this."
Toph cracked her knuckles before turning around and created a beautifully scaled version of the city of Ba Sing Se.
"Whoa!" Aang awed as he knelt down to observe the city. "Wow. You even made a little Earth King and Bosco."
"Very impressive, Toph," I nodded before the three of us walked over to Sokka and his creation.
"Try and top that, Sokka," Toph crossed her arms.
"...Ta-da!" Sokka presented his sand-sculpture.
"Is that a... blubbering blob-monster?" Aang asked.
"No, it's Suki!" Sokka exclaimed.
"Huh, that was my second guess," I teased before me, Aang, and Toph started laughing.
"Suki, we'll all understand if you break up with him over this," Toph smirked.
"I think it's sweet," Suki smiled before Sokka planted a large kiss on her cheek.
"But, it doesn't even look likeβ"
Aang was interrupted by a large fire blast that came soaring through the sky, destroying Sokka's Suki sculpture. As a reflex, Aang, Toph, and I all ran from the scene. Once the sand cleared, we watched as Zuko landed on the beach and charged towards Aang as he cowered behind his Appa sand-sculpture.
"What are you doing?" Aang exclaimed.
"Teaching you a lesson," Zuko glared before destroying the Appa sculpture.
Aang continued to run from Zuko as he blasted fire at him. Aang soon began to use his air bending to jump onto the cliffs that led up to the beach house. Zuko climbed up the cliffside to chase him.
"What happened?" Katara asked as she came to shore.
"Zuko's gone crazy!" Sokka exclaimed. "I made a sand-sculpture of Suki and he destroyed it... Oh, and he's attacking Aang..!"
Together, we all ran after the flaming prince as he chased after the Avatar. We watched as Aang hopped through the environment around him before fleeing into the beach house, and Zuko was right on his tail the whole time. By the time we were able to reach the house, Zuko came flying from one of the balconies. We all ran up to him.
"What's wrong with you? You could have hurt Aang!" Katara exclaimed at him as Aang joined us.
"What's wrong with me?" Zuko stood up. "What's wrong with all of you? How can you sit around having beach parties when Sozin's Comet is only three days away?"
All of us simply looked at him, all feeling a bit guilty for not telling him what was going on.
"Why are you all looking at me like I'm crazy?"
"...About Sozin's Cometβ" Aang began. "I was actually gonna wait to fight the Fire Lord until after it came?"
"After?" Zuko asked.
"I'm not ready," said Aang. "I need more time to master fire bending."
"And, frankly, your earth bending could still use some work, too," Toph added.
"So, you all knew Aang was gonna wait?" Zuko asked us.
"Yeah, for a while, actually," I said. "We're sorry for keeping it from you, but we were a bit afraid of how you would react, and rightfully so."
"Honestly, if Aang tries to fight the Fire Lord right now, he's gonna lose," Sokka stated bluntly. "No offense."
"The whole point of fighting the Fire Lord before the comet was to stop the Fire Nation from winning the war," Katara explained. "But they pretty much won the war when they took Ba Sing Se. Things can't get any worse."
"...You're wrong," said Zuko. "It's about to get worse than you can even imagine. The day before the eclipse, my father asked me to attend an important war meeting. It was what I'd dreamed about and wanted for so many years. My father had finally accepted me back. But in the war meeting, we discussed why we were unable to fully gain control over the Earth Kingdom and my father turned to me for a suggestion of what we should do. I spoke of the people of the Earth Kingdom and how their hope keeps them strong. From that, my father had decided that during the comet, he would completely wipe out the Earth Kingdom and cover it in flames with an army of airships; destroying the Earth Kingdom, their people, and their hope. I wanted to speak out against this horrifying plan, but I'm ashamed to say I didn't. My whole life, I've struggled to gain my father's love and acceptance. But once I had it, I realized I'd lost myself getting there. I'd forgotten who I was."
The entire Earth Kingdom will be gone, and the world will be in ruins...
"I can't believe this," Katara fell to her knees.
As everyone contemplated the news, I made my way over to Zuko and wrapped an arm around his shoulders in an embrace.
"Nobody blames you," I said. "Only a monster could think of something like that."
"I always knew the Fire Lord was a bad guy," said Sokka. "But... his plan is just pure evil."
"What am I gonna do?" Aang asked.
"I know you're scared," Zuko approached him. "And I know you're not ready to save the world. But if you don't defeat the Fire Lord before the comet comes, there won't be a world to save anymore."
"Why didn't you tell me about your dad's crazy plan sooner?" Aang started to stomp towards the beach house.
"I didn't think I had to," Zuko explained. "I assumed you were still gonna fight him before the comet. No one told me you decided to wait."
"This is bad. This is really, really bad," Aang held his face in his hands as he fell to his knees.
"Aang, you don't have to do this alone," Katara said as we all walked up to him.
"She's right, Aang. You have us," I smiled.
"Yeah!" said Toph. "If we all fight the Fire Lord together, we've got a shot at taking him down."
"All right! Team Avatar is back!" Sokka exclaimed as he pointed at us. "Air. Water. Earth. Fire. Fan and sword!"
"Fighting the Fire Lord is gonna be the hardest thing we've ever done together," said Aang. "But I wouldn't wanna do it any other way."
We all laughed as we embraced each other in a hug. We paused when we noticed that Zuko stood back, so we all opened our arms to him, inviting him into the hug.
"Come on, Zuko," I called. "You're a part of this team, too."
"Being a part of the group also means being a part of group hugs," Katara added.
Zuko slightly frowned before walking over and joining the hug. As soon as the group was together, Appa came flying over and tackled all of us in his own hug.
[~][~][~]
Continuing with the old plan of fighting the Fire Lord before the comet, Zuko immediately took Aang into the courtyard of the beach house and began to train him. Sokka, Suki, and Toph all retired to their rooms for a bit, while Katara and I stayed behind to watch the boys train.
"There is one technique you need to know before facing my father," said Zuko. "How to redirect lightning."
Ah! The student becomes the teacher. Iroh would be very proud...
"If you let the energy in your own body flow, the lightning will follow it," Zuko explained as he moved his arms in the same motion as before. "You turn your opponent's energy against them."
"That's like water bending!" Aang exclaimed.
"Exactly," said Zuko. "My uncle invented this technique himself by studying water benders."
"So, have you ever redirected lightning before?" Aang asked.
"Once... against my father."
"What did it feel like?"
"...Exhilarating. But terrifying," Zuko explained. "You feel so powerful holding that much energy in your body, but you know if you make the wrong moveβ it's over."
"Well," Aang nervously scoffed. "Not over-over. I mean, there is always Katara and a little spirit water action, am I right?"
"Actually, I used it all up after Azula shot you," said Katara.
"Oh."
"You'll have to take the Fire Lord's life before he takes yours," said Zuko.
"...Yeah, I'll just do that," Aang frowned as Zuko walked away.
[~][~][~]
As the sun was setting, Sokka gathered all of us to discuss and act-out his plan of attack against the Fire Lord. He and Toph set up a nice area in the middle of the jungle on the island and created a large scarecrow with a watermelon for a head as the Fire Lord.
"Gather around, Team Avatar," Sokka called. "In order to take out the Fire Lord, or, in this case, the Melon Lord, our timing has to be perfect."
Sokka knelt down and began to draw in the sand with a stick.
"First, Suki and I will draw his fire. Then, Katara, Kailea, and Zuko charge in with some liquidy hot offense, and while the Melon Lord is distracted, Aang swoops in and 'bam,' he delivers the final blow."
"Uh, what about me?" Toph asked.
"For now, you're the Melon Lord's forces."
"So, I get to chuck flaming rocks at all of you?" Toph asked, excitedly.
"Whatever makes the training field more realistic," said Sokka.
"...Sweetness."
Everyone, except Toph, ran to get into position at the bottom of the slop that the Melon Lord was standing on.
"Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!" Toph evilly laughed, letting us know that she was ready.
We all looked over at Sokka and watched as he gave the signal. All of us started to charge towards the Melon Lord.
"...Watch it, Toph!" I heard Sokka scream.
"I am not Toph, I am Melon Lord! Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!"
A large flaming rock came soaring over to me, Katara, and Zuko. The three of us ran to dodge the rock before fighting off Fire Nation soldiers made of earth that surrounded us. When none remained, we continued towards the Melon Lord.
"Now, Aang!"
Aang jumped from a rock and came soaring towards the Melon Lord. When Aang landed, he went to strike the Melon Lord's head but stopped short.
"...What're you waiting for?" Zuko yelled. "Take him out!"
"I can't," said Aang as we all walked up to him.
"What's wrong with you?" Sokka pointed a finger at Aang. "If this was the real deal, you'd be shot full of lightning right now."
"I'm sorry, but it just didn't feel right. I didn't feel like myself," Aang explained.
Sokka simply raised an eyebrow before unsheathing his sword and slicing the Melon Lord's head.
"There! That's how it's done."
[~][~][~]
Later that night, Aang sat a few feet away from everyone as we all ate dinner.
I'm sure this is hard for Aang to accept, but there really is no other way for this to end...
"I have a surprise for everyone!" Katara exclaimed as she walked up with a rolled piece of parchment.
"I knew it! You did have a secret thing with Haru!" Toph exclaimed.
We all stared at her with shock and disbelief.
"Uh... no," said Katara. "I was looking for cooking pots in the attic and I found this..! Look at baby Zuko! Isn't he cute?"
Katara unrolled the parchment to reveal a cute little baby with jet black hair and a big happy smile. We all laughed at Katara's teasing before cooing at the adorable baby picture. I glanced over at Zuko to see him sitting stoically.
"We're just teasing you," I lightly elbowed his side. "Don't be so upset."
"That's not me," Zuko stated. "It's my father."
...Whoaβ
"But he looks so sweet and innocent," said Suki.
"Well, that sweet little kid grew up to be a monster," said Zuko. "And the worst father in the history of fathers."
"But he's still a human being," Aang argued.
"You're going to defend him?"
"No, I agree with you. Fire Lord Ozai is a horrible person, and the world will probably be better off without him, but there's gotta be another way," Aang stood up.
"Like what?"
"I don't know," Aang frowned. "Maybe we can make some big pots of glue and then I can use glue-bending to stick his arms and legs together so he can't bend anymore."
"Yeah," Zuko teased, sarcastically. "Then you can show him his baby pictures and all those happy memories will make him good again."
"Do you really think that would work?" Aang smiled.
"No!"
Aang sighed, "This goes against everything I learned from the Monks. I can't just go around wiping out people I don't like."
"Don't think about it as wiping out everyone you simply don't like," I said. "You're ridding the world of someone evil, you're doing something good, Aang."
"Yeah, I mean, you're the Avatar," said Sokka. "If it's in the name of keeping balance, I'm pretty sure the universe will forgive you."
"This isn't a joke, Sokka!" Aang snapped. "None of you understand the position I'm in!"
"Aang, we do understand. It's justβ"
"Just what, Katara? What?"
"We're trying to help..!"
"Then when you figure out a way for me to beat the Fire Lord without taking his life, I'd love to hear it!"
Aang began to stomp away.
"Aang, don't walk away from this," Katara demanded.
Katara went to walk after him, but Zuko stood up and stopped her.
"Let him go," he said. "He needs time to sort it out by himself."
[~][~][~]
That night, after helping Katara clean up after dinner, I searched the house and found Zuko on one of the balconies, just looking out at the ocean.
"Hey," I approached him. "What are you doing?"
He lightly shrugged, "I don't know. I guess I'm just... thinking about the comet and ending the war... about ending my father."
I lightly placed a hand on his shoulder and had him face me. I sadly smiled up at him and wrapped my arms around his neck to pull him into an embrace. He lightly wrapped his arms around my waist and let them rest there.
"I'm sorry that this is something that you have to experienceβ"
"It's alright," Zuko interrupted. "I've always known that it would come to this. I just didn't know when."
Zuko and I both lightened our holds on one another so we could look at each other.
He looks so handsome... especially in the moonlight.
I bring one of my hands up and place it on his cheek. Zuko leaned into my touch before slowly leaning down to plant a loving kiss on my lips, which I returned.
"You're so beautiful, Kailea," Zuko whispered after our lips separated.
I felt myself blush as I started to brush his bangs out of his eyes.
"And you're really handsome," I smiled.
Zuko softly placed his forehead against mine.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you, too," I told him back.
After a few short moments of silence, we eventually separated but Zuko grabbed my hand.
"We should get some sleep," he advised.
"Yeah, it's going to be a long couple of days soon," I agreed.
With our hands still connected, we walked back into the beach house and prepared to get a full night's rest before it was time to set out to end the Fire Lord.

Kailea |~|
The next day, everything carried on as usual. We all had breakfast, Zuko and Toph trained Aang, we did some chores, we all had lunch, more training for Aang, we all relaxed, but just before I was going to help Katara with dinner, Zuko approached me.
"Kailea," he caught my attention. "Is... Is now a good time for us to talk?"
"...I don't know," I answered. "I have to help Katara get dinner prepared."
"Please," Zuko begged. "I want to head down to the beach before it gets too dark."
I glanced outside of a nearby window to see that the sun was just above the horizon.
Do we really have to go down to the beach to talk?
"...I'll go ask Katara if it's all right if she can prepare dinner by herself," I told him.
"Okay... Iβ I'll wait for you at the front of the house," he said before walking away.
I swiftly made my way to the kitchen where I saw Katara gathering supplies to make dinner.
"Hey, Katara," I greeted. "Do you think you're able to make dinner by yourself tonight?"
"Uh, yeah, sure, easy enough," Katara raised an eyebrow. "How come?"
"I'm just... I'm a little worn down today," I lied. "And I've been planning on having some alone time on the beach for a bit to, you know, just clear my head."
Somehow, Katara's eyebrow was able to raise just a bit higher before she shrugged. I gave her a quick one-armed hug before making my way to the front door of the beach house, where Zuko was waiting for me. Upon seeing me, Zuko shot up.
"So canβ"
"Let's hurry up before the sun sets," I interrupted him. "Because when the sun is under the horizon, we're done talking."
Zuko gave a hard nod, picking up on my sour mood towards this. We quickly made our way to the secluded beach and took off our shoes so we could softly walk on top of the sand along the shore. The edge of the sun was now resting on the horizon.
"Kailea..." Zuko drawled, not knowing where to start. "Iβ I'll start with the obvious and say that I'm sorry."
"Yeah, that is obvious," I mumble.
"I mean it," he said. "I'm so sorry for betraying you and my uncle the way that I did. You didn't deserve it. You've done so much for me and I realized that when it was too late."
There was a long moment of silence as we continued to walk along the shore.
"Well?" Zuko asked.
"Well what?" I asked back.
"Do you have anything to say?"
"...No, I don't," I answered.
I could tell that Zuko was starting to get angry.
"Why? Why don't you have anything to say to me?" he asked again. "You said you were ready to talk to me, but you're not talking at all..!"
I stopped in my tracks and took a deep breath, "It's not that I don't want to say anything, it's that I don't know what to say. I really don't think you completely understand the full extent of what you did. To Aang, to your uncle... to me."
"That's it, Kailea, I do understand. That's why I'm trying to make it right," he explained.
"But you don't..!" I said. "You don't understand the half of it because you think a simple apology will make it all okay, but it won't."
Zuko stared at me for a small moment before looking down at his feet.
"Then make me understand," he said. "Tell me what I did, tell me what you feel. Please, Makki, I want to make this right, I really do."
...I don't know if I can explain it.
I took another deep breath, "Well, to start, you captured me, took me from my family, and held me as a hostage for weeksβ"
"That's who I was, Kailea, you know I'm better than that nowβ"
"Let me finish," I said and he nodded. "Then, as we traveled across the Earth Kingdom together, we got pretty close, or at least I tried to get close to you, and you still treated me coldly. Then you lied to me about... everything you had to say to me..."
I felt tears sting my eyes.
"I lied..?" Zuko asked. "Tell me what I lied about..."
"Everything, Zuko, everything!" I exclaimed. "All you had to say to me while we were in Ba Sing Se were lies! I put my trust in you and believed everything you said and it all turned out to be fake..! I felt like a fool..."
"Kailea, what exactly did I say that was a lie?" Zuko asked softly as he got closer to me.
"...Everything," I said again as tears slowly painted my cheeks. "You... You told me you changed, you told me you... you liked me. You told me you were happy..."
I clenched my eyes shut, trying to stop the tears. But as I was doing that, Zuko brought his hands up to my face to try and dry my tears, I shot back from him.
"Don't touch me..!" I exclaimed. "I'm still... so angry with you. Itβ It hurts, how much I just... I just don't want to see you..."
Zuko's expression looked absolutely horrified at what I just said.
"Look... I don't really mean that," I said. "But, as much as I am angry with you... it really does hurt. It's a pain in my chest that... that I just feel."
"I'm so sorry that I've ever made you feel that way," he whispered to me. "I never meant to hurt you like this... I never meant to hurt you at all! Everything I said to you, Makki... I swear I was telling the truth."
I stared into his eyes, showing him that I wanted him to continue.
"The day that I took you on that date... That was the happiest I had ever been in my life. Traveling with you that whole time made me realize just what an amazing person you were for accepting me for who I was and always being there for me despite how awful I was to you. And, so you saying yes, to go on that date, made me feel like I was truly... loved by someone... other than my mother and uncle, of course."
Zuko slowly walked up and took my hands in his, and I let him.
"Kailea, I do like you. I like everything about you. So, when you're angry with me and you don't talk to me and you act like I don't exist, it makes me feel so horrible. So, I want to make it up to you, even if we can't go back to who we were in Ba Sing Se, at least let me start over and try to win you back. If that's what it takes, I'll do it."
He... he really...
"You still like me?" I asked.
"Of course," he said. "I've liked you this whole time. You're the kindest, strongest, most beautiful person I know. You help anyone who needs it, you stand your ground, you speak your mind, you have fun... and you were able to see right through me and help me become who I am."
Zuko suddenly looked out towards the ocean and noticed that the sun was barely peeking over the horizon, only seconds remained before it would be gone.
Zuko sighed, "I guess we have to stopβ"
"No, we don't," I said. "I just... said that to be spiteful, I want to keep talking, because I want to go back to how we used to be, too."
Zuko looked at me a bit shocked before he smiled.
"Who we were in Ba Sing Se, the way we lived, and how much... we liked each other," I said. "That was the happiest I had ever been, too. So, when you turned against me and told me to forget everything... I was so heartbroken... I just didn't know if I could heal from it. But, I think I can, I think I am healing; pretty fast."
Zuko closed his eyes and took in a deep breath, "Kailea, I love you."
I thought I felt my heart stop.
He... he loves me...
"I mean it," he said. "Because you are the only person I've ever felt this way about because you're the only person who's ever treated me the way that you have. I love you, so much."
Without a second thought, I jumped from my spot on the sand and kissed Zuko. The force from my action caused us to fall over, but we didn't break the kiss. We kissed for a few seconds before pulling apart.
"I... I love you, too, Zuko," I said. "And... I forgive you."
"R-Really? You do?" Zuko asked excitedly.
"To... which one?" I smiled.
"Both! You really mean them both?"
I nodded, "Yeah... I really do."
Zuko smiled before bringing me in for another kiss. When we separated again, we both sat up in the sand.
"...I need your help with something," I told him.
"What is it?" he asked.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my crescent moon necklace, "Could you help me put it on again?"
Zuko stared down at it in disbelief, "You kept it?"
"Yeah. It meant so much to me, I just couldn't get rid of it," I explained.
Zuko smiled as he took the necklace from me. I turned around and he tied the necklace around my neck. When it was on, Zuko gave me a hug from behind.
"I love you, so much."
"I love you, too."

Kailea |~|
For the past couple of days, we've all been staying at Zuko's family's beach house. It was nice but it seemed a little... neglected. The whole place was covered in dust, and branches from nearby trees had begun to cover the roof.
It is actually better than camping, though.
Currently, Toph, Katara, and I all sat, watching as Zuko and Aang practiced some fire bending in the courtyard of the house. The two moved in sync as they bended fire from their hands and feet. They soon finished and bowed towards one another.
"Doesn't it seem kind of weird that we're hiding from the Fire Lord in his own house?" Katara asked.
"I told you, my father hasn't come here since our family was actually happy," Zuko explained. "And that was a long time ago. It's the last place anyone would think to look for us."
"You guys are not gonna believe this!" Sokka exclaimed as he and Suki came running up to us. "There's a play about us."
"We were just in town, and we found this poster," Suki explained.
From behind his back, Sokka pulled out a large poster with a painting of Aang, Sokka, and Katara all standing in front of Zuko's eyes.
"What? How is that possible?" Katara asked.
"Listen to this," Sokka said before reading off of the poster. "'The Boy in the Iceberg' is a new production from acclaimed playwright Pu-On Tim who scoured the globe, gathering information on the Avatar from the icy South Pole to the heart of Ba Sing Se. His sources include singing nomads, pirates, prisoners of war, and a surprisingly knowledgeable merchant of cabbage.'"
'Cabbage merchant'..?
"'Brought to you by the critically acclaimed Ember Island Players'," Suki finished.
"Ugh," Zuko groaned. "My mother used to take us to see them. They butchered Love Amongst the Dragons every year."
"...Sokka, do you really think it's a good idea for us to attend a play about ourselves?" Katara asked.
"Come on. A day at the theater? This is the kind of wacky, time-wasting nonsense I've been missing," Sokka smiled.
[~][~][~]
That night, we all walked into town to their theater to see the play. To not draw attention, we wore our Fire Nation clothing, of course, and sat all the way up in the nosebleeds. We got three rows in the back but only used the front two. In the first row sat Toph, Katara, Aang, Zuko, and me, in that order, and behind us sat Suki and Sokka.
"Why are we sitting in the nosebleed section?" Toph asked. "My feet can't see a thing from up here."
"I don't think there's going to be much to see," I said.
"Don't worry. I'll tell your feet what's happening," said Katara.
The lights dimmed around us and the stage's curtain rose from the ground. On stage was a set of the South Pole with 'Katara' and 'Sokka' sitting in a boat.
'Katara' sighed, "Sokka, my only brother, we constantly roam these icy South Pole seas and yet, never do we find anything fulfilling."
"All I want is a full feeling in my stomach. I'm starving!" 'Sokka' replied, making the audience laugh.
Wow... The Fire Nation has low standards for comedy.
"Is food the only thing on your mind?" 'Katara' whined.
"Well, I'm trying to get it out of my mind and into my mouth. I'm starving!" 'Sokka' repeated making the audience laugh again.
"...This is pathetic," the real Sokka complained. "My jokes are way funnier than this."
"I think he's got you pegged," Toph giggled.
"Every day, the world awaits a beacon to guide us, yet none appears," 'Katara' began. "Still, we cannot give up hope, for hope is all we have. And we must never relinquish it, even... even to our dying breath."
Katara's character began to loudly sob.
"Well, that's just silly," Katara sulked while the rest of us lightly laughed. "I don't sound like that."
"Oh, man, this writer's a genius," Toph smiled.
Suddenly, a large fake iceberg came waddling onto the stage with a boy-puppet at the top of it.
"It appears to be someone frozen in ice, perhaps for a hundred years," 'Katara' stopped sobbing.
"But who? Who is the boy in the iceberg?" 'Sokka' asked.
The two characters climbed onto the iceberg and faced the puppet.
"Water bend! Hi-ya!" 'Katara' split the iceberg in two.
From the iceberg came a small, jovial Avatar.
"Who are you, Frozen Boy?"
"I'm the Avatar, silly, here to spread joy and fun," 'Aang' giggled.
"Wait, is that a woman playing me?" the real Aang asked.
After the feminine 'Aang' sprung from the iceberg, a large Appa puppet followed and danced around.
"An air bender," 'Katara' gasped. "My heart is so full of hope that it's making me tear bend."
Katara's character fell to her knees and cried against 'Aang's' leg.
"My stomach is so empty that it's making me tear bend!" 'Sokka' also fell to his knees and started crying. "I need meat!"
"But wait! Is that a platter of meaty dumplings?" 'Aang' pointed towards the sky.
"Ooh, where? Where?"
'Aang' laughed, "Did I mention that I'm an incurable prankster?"
The audience laughed.
"I don't do that," Aang complained. "That's not what I'm like. And I'm not a woman..!"
Toph laughed, "Oh, they nailed you, Twinkle-toes."
The stage quickly cleared before a Fire Nation ship model was presented. On the ship were the actors playing Iroh and Zuko.
"Prince Zuko, you must try this cake," 'Iroh' smiled.
"I don't have time to stuff my face," 'Zuko' growled.
Oh... how did I not notice before..?
I placed a hand over my mouth.
"I must capture the Avatar to regain my honor."
'Zuko' faced the audience, making it harder for me to keep my laughter in.
"Well, while you do that, maybe I'll capture another slice," 'Iroh' said before wolfing down the cake.
"You sicken me!"
"They make me look totally stiff and humorless," Zuko complained.
"Actually, I think that actor's pretty spot-on," Katara smirked.
"How could you say that?" Zuko asked.
"Let's forget about the Avatar and get massages," 'Iroh' suggested.
"How could you say that?" 'Zuko' asked.
I couldn't hold it in any longer. My shoulders violently shook before I let a few heavy laughs out.
"What're you laughing at?" Zuko asked me.
"Theyβ They put the scar... on the wrong side..!" I said in between laughs.
Zuko took another glance at the stage before shrinking in his seat, making me laugh just a bit harder. The play continued on as accurately as you'd expect, I suppose. 'Zuko' came to our village and kidnapped mine and Aang's characters. My character wasn't too far off from who I actually am, except they made me overly encouraging about everything, to the point where it almost made me sick.
I have no idea where that came from...
And after 'Aang' escaped from 'Zuko's' ship, his and my sibling's characters went to the Southern Air Temple.
"Hey, look," 'Aang' pointed at a whitetail that stuck out of some bushes. "I think I found something."
'Aang' searched through the bushes and emerged with a crude puppet of Momo in place of his arm.
"It's a flying rabbit monkey. I think I'll name him Momo!"
"Hi, everybody. I love you," Aang's character spoke as Momo.
The audience laughed before the stage was cleared. The next scene was at Kyoshi Island where Suki was now being portrayed.
"Does this dress make my butt look fat?" 'Sokka' asked once he was dressed in Kyoshi Warrior clothing.
The audience laughed again and now 'Aang', 'Katara', and 'Sokka' all had to face the King of Omashu, King Bumi, as he put them in a bunch of challenges.
"Riddles and challenges must you face if you are to ever leave this place," 'Bumi' rhymed.
Once the trio was free from King Bumi, they cut to when Katara stole a water bending scroll from a bunch of pirates.
"Why did ya have to steal that water bending scroll?" 'Sokka' asked.
"It just gave me so much hope," 'Katara' sobbed.
Once that scene was done, we now watched as 'Zuko' captured 'Aang' and tied him to a platform.
"This never happened," I whispered.
"No. Zhao was actually the one to capture him," Zuko explained to me.
"Then whyβ"
"The Avatar is mine!" 'Zuko' exclaimed. "Wait, who's coming?"
From off stage, a giant Blue Spirit mask hopped out holding two giant dual swords.
Oh...
"I am the Blue Spirit, the scourge of the Fire Nation," said the 'Blue Spirit'. "Here to save the Avatar."
The 'Blue Spirit' easily fought off the Fire Nation soldiers and 'Zuko' before freeing 'Aang'.
"My hero," 'Aang' smiled before hopping on the 'Blue Spirit', and the two walked off stage.
"...That's hilarious," I stifled my laughs as Zuko and Aang shared an exasperated look.
The next scene was now set in a forest of cherry blossom trees where 'Katara' and 'Jet' swung down on a platform.
"Wait, so you guys do know Jet?" I leaned forward to ask Katara and Aang.
"You know Jet?" Katara asked back.
In confusion, we both shrugged before turning back to the play, where 'Katara' was loudly sobbing next to 'Jet'.
"Don't cry, baby. Jet will wipe out that nasty town for you," 'Jet' smirked before fake water covered the town on stage.
"Oh, Jet, you're so bad," 'Katara' cooed.
"Katara, I thought you had higher standards," I teased.
Toph giggled while Katara hid her face in embarrassment. The scene slowly changed to the next, and now the trio was flying in the air on Appa.
"Look, it's the Great Divide, the biggest canyon in the Earth Kingdom," 'Aang' pointed.
"...Eh, let's keep flying," said 'Sokka.'
After that strange moment, the scene cut to Zhao's invasion of the Northern Water Tribe, where the white-haired girl became the Moon Spirit; I learned her name was Princess Yue.
"Don't go, Yue. You're the only woman who's ever taken my mind off of food," 'Sokka' pleaded.
The two actors shared a small kiss, and 'Sokka' pulled away to lightly gag.
"Wait, did you have pickled fish for dinner?"
"Goodbye, Sokka. I have important moon duties to take care of," 'Yue' said as she rose into the sky. "And yes, I did have pickled fish."
I crossed my arms, "Wow. Way to ruin a beautiful moment, playwright."
The scene continued, and now 'Aang' was destroying the Fire Nation army with the help of the Ocean Spirit.
"The Avatar is back to save the day! Yay!"
The curtain closed and now it was time for an intermission. The seven of us exited the rows that we were in and took a seat on a nearby staircase.
"So far, this intermission is the best part of the play," Zuko complained.
"Apparently, the playwright thinks I'm an idiot who tells bad jokes about meat all the time," Sokka sulked before biting into some jerky.
"Yeah, you tell bad jokes about plenty of other topics," Suki teased.
"I know!"
"At least the Sokka actor kind of looks like you," said Aang. "That woman playing the Avatar doesn't resemble me at all..!"
"I don't know," said Toph. "You are more in touch with your feminine side than most guys."
Aang growled at the blind earth bender.
"Relax, Aang. They're not accurate portrayals," Katara smiled. "It's not like I'm a preachy crybaby who can't resist giving overemotional speeches about hope all the time."
We all looked at Katara.
Um... about that...
"What?"
"Yeah, that's not you at all," Aang frowned.
"I think you guys are forgetting that this play was written by someone of the Fire Nation, and is being produced as a Fire Nation play," I said. "These people aren't exactly fans of ours, so I think it's meant to be a satire. You know, something that's not supposed to be taken seriously..."
"Listen, friends," Toph began. "It's obvious that the playwright did his research. I know it must hurt, but what you're seeing up there on that stage is the truth."
Everyone grumbled in disagreement before walking back into the theater to watch the rest of the play. Now, the trio was standing in the middle of a bunch of Earth Kingdom buildings.
"Well, here we are in the Earth Kingdom," said 'Katara'.
"I'd better have a look around to see if I can find an earth bending teacher," 'Aang' said before flying over the audience.
"This is it! This must be where I come in," Toph jumped in her seat.
"I flew all over town, but I couldn't find a single earth bending master," 'Aang' explained.
"Here it comes," said Toph.
"You can't find an earth bending master in the sky," a large man dressed as Toph said as he emerged from under the stage. "You have to look underground."
All of us erupted in laughter at Toph's portrayal.
"Who are you?" 'Aang' asked.
"My name's Toph, because it sounds like tough, and that's just what I am," 'Toph' introduced after spitting.
"Wait a minute," said Toph. "I sound like a guy. A really buff guy..."
"Well, Toph, what you hear up there is the truth," Katara mocked. "It hurts, doesn't it."
"Are you kidding me?" Toph smiled. "I wouldn't have cast it any other way. At least it's not a flying bald lady."
Aang simply pouts in his seat.
"So, you're blind?" 'Aang' asked on stage as he waved a hand in 'Toph's' face.
"I can see you doing that," 'Toph' laughed. "I can see everything that you see, except I don't see like you do. I release a sonic wave from my mouth."
Toph's character turned to the trio and screamed.
"There. I got a pretty good look at you."
The scene ended with 'Toph' joining 'Aang's' group and then cut to a scene of 'me', 'Iroh', and 'Zuko'.
"Zuko, it's time we had a talk... about your hair," 'Iroh' said, referring to the actor's long wig. "It's gone too far."
"I think it looks really nice!" my character smiled brightly.
Ugh... I hate this...
"Maybe it's best if we... split up," 'Zuko' flipped his hair. "Come, Kailea, travel with me instead of him..!"
"Only if we can become friends!" my character exclaimed before following 'Zuko' off stage.
"This is so embarrassing," I sighed as I placed a hand over my eyes.
"You're telling me," Zuko groaned.
The scene cut to when all of us surrounded Azula at that abandoned town.
"Azula, my sister, what are you doing here?" 'Zuko' asked.
"You caught me... wait, what's that? I think it's your honor!" 'Azula' pointed towards the sky.
"Where?"
All of the actors turned around as 'Azula' walked through a door on set to leave the stage.
"She escaped, but how?" 'Katara' asked.
The play continued on as 'Aang's' group made it to Ba Sing Se, but 'Azula' was also there, trying to drill through the wall.
"If she continues drilling, this wall will come down for sure," 'Aang' explained before throwing a fake rock at 'Azula'.
'Azula' knocked the rock away, "Yes. Continue drilling! The city of Ba Sing Se can hide no longer!"
The scene went by really slowly, but 'Aang' eventually stopped the drill and chased away 'Azula'. Then, the scene changed to the underground building where Zuko found Appa, but now, 'Aang', 'Katara', 'Sokka', 'Toph', and 'Jet' were all there.
"No, Jet, what did they do to you?" 'Aang' asked as 'Jet' swung around wildly.
"Must... serve... Earth King... must destroy!" 'Jet' exclaimed before a fake rock slowly fell down onto him.
Wait... didβ
"Whoa..." I exhaled.
"Did Jet just... die?" Zuko asked.
"You know, it was really unclear," said Sokka.
Now, we were watching a scene of when Katara and Zuko were stuck in the crystal catacombs together.
"Tell me, Prince Zuko, what do you think of my sister?" 'Katara' asked 'Zuko'.
That came out of nowhere.
"What does that matter?" 'Zuko' exclaimed.
"Because, I have to admit, Prince Zuko, I really find you attractive," 'Katara' began, very flirtily.
"You don't have to make fun of me!" 'Zuko' shot.
"But I mean it," 'Katara' took a seat next to 'Zuko'. "I've had eyes for you since the day you first captured me."
"Wait, I thought you were the Avatar's girl," 'Zuko' stood up.
"The Avatar?" 'Katara' laughed. "Why, he's like a little brother to me. I certainly don't think of him in a romantic way. Besides, how could he ever find out about this?"
The actors had come together and held hands as they embraced. Suddenly, Aang stood up from his seat and began to walk out.
Why... Why am I feeling jealous again..? I know it's just a play but...
"That never happened," Zuko quickly whispered in my ear, actually making me feel a bit better.
"I... It doesn't matter if it did or it didn't," I lied. "Who cares?"
"...I do, because it didn't," Zuko repeated.
I looked up at him, and through the dim light, I could see that he was being serious.
"...I believe you," I said before turning my attention back to the play.
Now, we made it to the part where Zuko was torn between siding with Azula or siding with Iroh.
"Well, my brother, what's it going to be?" 'Azula' asked. "Your nation, or a life of treachery?"
"...Choose treachery. It's more fun," 'Iroh' winked after taking a sip of tea.
'Zuko' walked over to 'Iroh'.
"No way!"
'Zuko' then pushed 'Iroh' to the ground before walking up to 'Azula'.
"I hate you, Uncle. You smell, and I hate you for all time!" 'Zuko' exclaimed before walking off stage with 'Azula'.
"You didn't really say that, did you?" Katara asked Zuko.
"I might as well have," Zuko frowned.
"No kidding," I softly scoffed.
The scene was now placed inside of the Earth Kingdom palace where the Earth King stood behind two Fire Nation girls as they took down the Earth King's guards.
"Avatar state, yip yip!" 'Aang' exclaimed as the actor flipped onto the stage.
Certain parts of the stage began to glow as 'Aang' flew into the air.
"Not if my lightning can help it," 'Azula' flew up and shot a blue ribbon at 'Aang'.
Aang's actor acted as if they were being electrocuted before slowly falling onto the stage. 'Azula' and the other two girls stood in front of the actor.
"The Avatar is no more!" 'Azula' announced and the audience cheered.
Wow... this play is really bitter.
After that upsetting scene, it was time for another intermission and now we were all, except for Katara and Aang, sitting outside of the entrance to the rows that we were sitting in.
"It seems like every time there's a big battle, you guys barely make it out alive," said Suki. "I mean, you guys lose a lot."
"You're one to talk, Suki," Sokka folded his arms. "Didn't Azula take you captive? That's right, she did."
Suki frowned, "Are you trying to get on my bad side?"
"I'm just saying."
"Does anyone know where Aang is?" Katara walked up to us.
"He left to get me fire gummies, like, ten minutes ago, and I'm still waiting," Sokka complained.
"...I'm gonna check outside," Katara said before walking away.
"All right," I said as I stood up. "I'm going to head to the washrooms. Be back in a sec."
I walked down the hall and took a right. I spotted the sign for the bathrooms and walked into the ladies' room. Once I was finished with my business in there, I began to make my way back to the group when I started to overhear Zuko and Toph talking.
"But for me, it takes all the mistakes I've made in my life and shoves them back in my face," Zuko described. "My uncle, he's always been on my side, even when things were bad. He was there for me. And even when we were apart he made sure that Kailea would be there in his place, to make sure that I had someone. They both taught me so much, and how do I repay them? With a pair of knives in their backs. It's my greatest regret, and I may never get to redeem myself."
...umβ
"You have redeemed yourself. Well, to your uncle at least," said Toph. "You don't realize it, but you already have."
"How do you know?" Zuko asked.
"Because I once had a long conversation with the guy and all he would talk about was you," Toph explained.
"Really?"
"Yeah, and it was kind of annoying."
"Oh, sorry."
"But it was also very sweet," said Toph. "All your uncle wanted was for you to find your own path and see the light. Now you're here with us. He'd be proud. And I haven't know Kailea for all that long, but I've noticed how you've tried to make things up to her. She'll come around."
...Now why am I feeling guilty?
"Ow! What was that for?" Zuko asked.
"That's how I show affection."
Realizing that the conversation was over, I turned the corner of the hallway and started to make my way back to the two just as a little kid, dressed as Aang, ran towards them. He suddenly stopped.
"Your Zuko costume's pretty good, but your scar's on the wrong side," the kid said to Zuko before running off.
I couldn't help but laugh.
"The scar's not on the wrong side!"
Zuko yells before flipping his hood back up. When I stopped laughing, I slowly took a seat next to Zuko and I could feel him slightly shift.
"I think I might be ready," I said to him quietly. "I think I might be able to talk."
"Really..?" Zuko asked eagerly.
I simply nodded my head as a response. In a flash, Zuko lightly wrapped his arms around me.
"I'm so happy thatβ"
"Hey, I said that we would talk," I interrupted him while pushing his arms off. "That doesn't mean you can do... that."
"R-Right, sorry," Zuko said as he retracted his arms.
The lights in the theater began to flicker just as Sokka, Suki, and Katara joined the group. Together, we entered back into our rows and waited for the play to continue. But since Aang didn't return to us, the new seating arrangments were now just Toph, Katara, Zuko, and me in the first row, and Sokka and Suki in the second.
A few minutes passed before the curtain rose again and the play continued. We watched as the actors portrayed the moments of Aang healing, me rejoining the group, Katara being the Painted Lady, Sokka getting his sword, and even Combustion Man was there and died as vaguely as Jet did. But now we've made it to the invasion scene, where 'Katara' and 'Aang' were standing on top of one of the submarines.
"I just want to let you know, Aang, that I'll always love you," 'Katara' smiled. "Like a brother."
"I wouldn't want it any other way," 'Aang' smiled before the two shook hands and Aang flew off.
'Sokka', 'Toph', and 'I' all joined 'Katara' at the top of the sub to look for 'Aang' for a moment.
"Hey, Toph," 'Sokka' began. "Would you say you and Aang have a rocky relationship?"
The audience erupted in laughter and I could slightly hear Sokka freaking out behind me.
What's up with him right now?
"I hope everyone's ready for the invasion," 'Sokka' said. "Slop-a-Pow!"
The audience laughed again before the scene changed to the inside of the Fire Lord's palace, where everyone ran to the center of the stage.
"We finally made it to the royal palace, but no one's home," 'Aang' explained.
"Actually, I'm home. And I want to join you," 'Zuko' walked onto the stage.
"I guess we have no choice," 'Sokka' shrugged. "Come on."
All of the characters ran off stage and the curtain dropped.
"I guess that's it," said Sokka. "The play's caught up to the present now."
"Wait, the play's not over," Suki told him.
"But it is over, unless... this is the future..?" Sokka questioned.
The curtain rose to show a scene with the Fire Lord on top of his throne.
"With the energy harnessed from that comet, no one will be able to stop the Fire Nation!" 'Ozai' exclaimed.
"Father," 'Azula' ran onto stage. "Zuko and the Avatar are at the palace. They are trying to stop you."
"You take care of Zuko," said 'Ozai'. "I shall face the Avatar myself."
'Fire Lord Ozai' disappeared from the stage as 'Zuko' and 'Aang' ran to 'Azula'.
"Aang, you find the Fire Lord. I'll hold her off," 'Zuko' said and 'Aang' flew off stage.
"You are no longer my brother. You are an enemy!" 'Azula' exclaimed.
"No, I am the rightful heir to the throne," 'Zuko' pointed.
"We'll see."
The two actors began to fight with blue and red ribbons, to simulate fire. They fought for a few short seconds until large fire props came up from the bottom of the stage and blocked 'Zuko'.
"Honor!" 'Zuko' cried as his silhouette was consumed by fire.
'Azula' turned to the audience and bowed; they cheered at her victory.
Did they just... predict Zuko's... death?
We all turned to the real Zuko to see him staring at the stage, stunned by the performance. When I noticed everyone turn their attention back to the stage, I couldn't help by slowly place my hand on top of Zuko's, to try and reassure him about the situation that was presented to him. I felt him slightly flinch from my touch before slowly interlocking our fingers together.
...I guess I really do still care for him.
Ignoring the heat that was rising to my face, I watched as 'Aang' walked onto the stage and stood in front of the 'Fire Lord'.
"So, you have mastered all four elements?" 'Ozai' asked.
"Yeah, and now, you're going down!" 'Aang' smiled.
"No, it is you who are going down," 'Ozai' smirked. "You see, you are too late. The comet is already here, and I'm unstoppable!"
Both actors brought out their own ribbons to simulate the elements to fight each other. The entire time, 'Ozai' was on the offensive while 'Aang' simply swung his glider around. When 'Aang' went to fly away, 'Ozai' shot a large fake blast of fire at 'Aang', which swirled around him and brought him to the ground.
"Nooo..!"
This is really... depressing...
"It is over, Father. We've done it," 'Azula' walked onto stage.
"Yes, we have done it!" 'Ozai' smiled as the stage was being covered in fake fire. "The dreams of my father and my father's father have now been realized. The world is mine!"
The audience stood up and cheered as the 'Fire Lord' stood on a pedestal of victory; while the rest of us stared in shock. We left the theater before everyone else and began to walk back to the beach house.
"That... wasn't a good play," Zuko frowned as he led the group.
"I'll say," Aang agreed.
"Really awful," I added.
"No kidding," said Katara.
"Horrible," Suki frowned.
"You said it," said Toph.
"But the effects were decent," Sokka shrugged.

Chapter 12-Kataraβs Revenge
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
Last night was probably the best sleep I had had in a long time. I slept in a large circle with the rest of my friends and family, and enjoyed the silence within the temple.
Our family is finally reunited... I really feel at peace.
I tossed and turned a slight bit when I began to wake up. I tried to get comfortable in a different position so I could fall asleep again, but I, and everyone else, was suddenly jolted awake when a large explosion erupted near the temple's water fountain. We all stood up and watched as a fleet of Fire Nation airships surrounded us. Aang lept up and ran with Appa towards us before slamming the doors around us shut. From the outside, the airships blasted a mirage of bombs at the doors
"Watch out!"
Zuko lept towards Katara and tackled her to the ground before a pile of rocks falling from the ceiling took her place.
"What're you doing?" I heard Katara exclaim from behind the debris.
"Keeping rocks from crushing you," Zuko stated.
"Okay, I'm not crushed. You can get off me now," Katara told him harshly before running back to the group.
"Are you okay?" I asked Katara as she ran up to me.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Katara said before sending a small glare towards Zuko.
"Come on," Toph pointed towards the large tunnel that she and Haru made. "We can get out through here!"
Everyone ran in the tunnel all at once but stopped and turned around once a large groan filled the air. At the entrance of the tunnel, Aang fought to get Appa to follow him.
"...What're you doing?" Aang asked after looking past Appa.
I followed Aang's look to see that Zuko was standing by the doors, ready to leave.
"Go ahead, I'll hold them off..." Zuko told us before running towards the airships.
"Zuko, no!" Aang called.
Aang was about to run after him, but Sokka, Katara, and I all stopped him and began to help pull Appa into the tunnel.
"Come on, we've got to get out of here," Sokka told Aang.
As we all pulled on Appa's reins, I couldn't help but watch as Zuko lept over the shattering doors and ran to the edge of the temple.
...How are you supposed to hold off an entire air fleet by yourself? You can be really stupid sometimes.
"Ugh! I can't get him to go in there!" Aang strained as we continued to pull Appa towards the tunnel. "Appa hates tunnels."
"Aang, there's no way we can fly out of here," said Katara.
"Well, if we can't get Appa to cooperate, then flying is our only option," I explained.
"We have to find a way," Aang said as we all let go of Appa's reins.
"We need to split up," Sokka decided before running up to Dad. "Take the tunnel and get to the stolen airship."
We're splitting up... Again?!
"...No!" Katara exclaimed. "The Fire Nation can't separate our family again."
Katara stomped her way over to Dad, with me following behind her.
"It'll be okay," Dad placed his hands on Katara's shoulder. "It's not forever."
"...It's our only choice, Katara," I told her.
Katara quickly gave Dad a hug before running back to Aang. I also embraced Dad just after her.
"Goodbye, Dad," I whispered.
"Stay safe," he whispered back.
We released each other and I followed Katara back to Aang and Appa. Behind me, Sokka came running up with his girlfriend, who I learned was named Suki, and helped get us all onto Appa's saddle.
"I can clear that away and we can fly out through there," Toph announced as she placed her hand on a wall before making her way up to us.
"Um, there's an awful lot of fire in that general direction," said Suki.
"We'll get through. Let's go," Aang said as he took Appa's reins.
Quickly, Toph broke down the wall and Appa flew through the debris. Using some of the wall as a shield, we flew past the leading airship and turned around once we knew we were clear. Looking behind us, we all watched as Zuko came rising up on an airship, getting ready to face his sister, Azula, who was leading the fleet. Zuko jumped from his own airship towards Azula's. Azula tried fire bending at him, but he easily dodged and fired his own blast. Once Zuko landed on Azula's airship, the two began their own intense battle.
"Look out!"
All of our attentions were now taken by the soldiers atop the airships as they shot streams of fire at us. Katara and I both stood up and used our water bending to extinguish the airborne blasts. When one airship blocked our path, Katara and I sat back down as Aang steered Appa upwards to avoid the ships. Now in the clear, we turned back to Zuko and Azula's fight, where the two had suddenly come together to create a large explosion. Both fire benders were blown back from the blast and came hurtling off the ship and towards the ground.
Zuko..!
Aang quickly yanked on Appa's reins to have him turn around and fly under Zuko. As we closed in on his descending form, I stood up and outstretched my arm. When he made it to us, I tightly gripped his arm and pulled him onto the saddle. When he was safe with us, we all turned to watch Azula as she continued to fall.
"She's... not gonna make it," Zuko mumbled.
Suddenly, Azula blasted fire from her feet to propel herself towards the rock wall of the temple. When she made it, she gripped the edge and slowly came to a stop.
"Of course she did."
We all glared at her shrinking figure as we flew to a safe place.
Goodbye, Western Air Temple...
[~][~][~]
Before the sun was set, we made it all the way back to where we met up with everyone for the invasion. The place with all of the koala sheep. We quickly set up camp and even started making dinner. Once it was done, the moon was up and our fire was burning brightly. We all sat around the warm fire, eating dinner, and talking cheerfully, despite today's earlier events.
"Wow, camping... it really seems like old times again, doesn't it?" Aang smiled.
"If you really want it to feel like old times, I could, uh, chase you around a while and try to capture you," Zuko joked.
Everyone, except for me and Katara, laughed at him.
"Ha ha," Katara glared.
I simply kept my eyes down with a neutral expression painting my face.
I'm starting to believe that Zuko is truly good, mainly because of all the things that he's done since he's been here, but it's still hard for me to see him the way I used to...
"...To Zuko," Sokka raised his cup. "Who knew after all those times he tried to snuff us out, today he'd be our hero."
The same as before, everyone except me and Katara raised their cups.
"Here, here!"
"...I'm touched," Zuko smiled. "I don't deserve this."
"Yeah, no kidding," Katara glared before standing up and walking away.
"What's with her?" Sokka asked.
"I wish I knew," Zuko said before standing up and following Katara.
"What's with him?"
[~][~][~]
The night went by quickly, and in the morning, something strange happened. Katara and Zuko marched up to me, Sokka, and Aang as we stood together by Appa.
"I need to borrow Appa," said Katara.
"Why? Is it your turn to take a little field trip with Zuko?" Aang teased.
"Yes, it is."
Shocked by her seriousness, we all looked at her with wide eyes.
"Oh... what's going on?" Aang asked.
"We're going to find the man who took my mother from me," Katara explained.
What..?
"Sokka told me the story of what happened," Zuko began. "I know who did it, and I know how to find him."
"Um, and what exactly do you think this will accomplish?" Aang asked hesitantly.
"...I knew you wouldn't understand," Katara scoffed before turning around.
"Wait, stop, I do understand," said Aang. "You're feeling unbelievable pain and rage. How do you think I felt about the sand benders when they stole Appa? How do you think I felt about the Fire Nation when I found out what happened to my people?"
"She needs this, Aang," said Zuko. "This is about getting closure and justice."
I'm sorry, how does this involve you?
"I don't think so," Aang frowned. "I think it's about getting revenge."
"Fine! Maybe it is. Maybe that's what I need," said Katara. "Maybe that's what he deserves."
"Katara, you sound like Jet," Aang told her.
Wait... 'Jet'? The same Jet that I met..?
"It's not the same," Katara shot. "Jet attacked the innocent. This man, he's a monster."
"Katara, she was our mother, too," Sokka said as he motioned towards me. "But, I think Aang might be right."
"I agree with him, too," I nodded.
"Then you didn't love her the way I did," Katara glared.
"Katara..!" Sokka and I said together.
"...The Monks used to say that revenge is like a two-headed rat viper," Aang began. "While you watch your enemy go down, you're being poisoned yourself."
"That's cute, but this isn't Air Temple preschool," said Zuko. "It's the real world."
"I really think you should stop talking," I glared at him.
"Now that I know he's out there... now that I know we can find him... I feel like I have no choice," Katara explained.
"Katara, you do have a choice. Forgiveness," said Aang.
"That's the same as doing nothing," Zuko shot.
"No, it's not," Aang shook his head. "It's easy to do nothing, but it's hard to forgive."
"It's not just hard, it's impossible," Katara frowned before walking away.
"...I'll try and talk to her later today," I said to the boys. "Maybe I can change her mind or at least cool her down a bit."
Aang and Sokka both nodded in understanding before we all split up to continue on with our day.
[~][~][~]
Just before it was time to make dinner, I met up with Katara as she sat by herself at the edge of the cliff that hung over the beach.
"Kataraβ"
"If you're going to lecture me, I don't want to hear it," she snapped.
"...Whether I'm going to lecture you or not, you're going to listen," I told her.
Katara glared at me from over her shoulder as I walked up and sat beside her.
"Look, one way or another, I'm going to find the man that killed our mother," Katara explained as she stared at the setting sun. "I can't sit and do nothing while he's still out there..."
"Katara, you can," I said. "And I think you should. Getting revenge will only make it hurt worse. For the rest of your life, you will remember when you confronted him and you will remember what you did. Now, I'm not asking you to forgive him because I agree with you that it may be impossible to do so, but I truly think that it's for the best thatβ"
"I said that I didn't want to hear a lecture..!" Katara exclaimed as she stood up. "Everything you're saying... I can't believe that you can just let something like this go! He took our mother, Makki! I mean, don't you feel anything?"
I kept eye contact with Katara as I stood up in front of her.
"Of course I do," I said softly. "I feel anger, the same as you, every time I think about what happened to Mom. I was there, Katara. I was there with her when that man came into our tent and confronted our mother. She protected us, Katara. And I think the last thing she'd want you to do is to get revenge."
Katara clenched her eyes shut as tears threatened to escape from them, before suddenly glaring at me.
"You don't know that! You don't what she'd want because she's gone!"
Katara clenched her hands into fists as she stomped away. I sighed before taking my previous seat on the cliff's edge and lying back onto the grass.
"I heard yelling. How did it go?" Sokka asked as he walked up to me.
"As well as you'd think," I said. "She's still going to confront whoever took Mom, so..."
"Right..." Sokka sighed, knowing exactly what I meant.
[~][~][~]
That night, a couple of hours after dinner, Sokka, Aang, and I all sat behind a rock as we waited to see if Katara and Zuko would continue on with their plan to hunt for the man that took our mother from us. It was no surprise to us when the two snuck over to Appa, both dressed completely in black.
As I thought... both of them are too stubborn for their own good.
"So you were just gonna take Appa anyway?" Aang asked as the three of us made our way up to them.
"Yes."
"It's okay, because I forgive you," said Aang. "...That give you any ideas?"
"Don't try to stop us," Katara shot.
"I wasn't planning to," Aang frowned. "This is a journey you need to take. You need to face this man..."
Katara gave Aang a hard nod before climbing onto Appa.
"But when you do, please don't choose revenge. Let your anger out, and then let it go. Forgive him."
"...Okay, we'll be sure to do that, Guru Goody-Goody," Zuko mocked.
"Hey!" I exclaimed. "Think if we tried to get revenge on you. Think if we didn't forgive you, how bad it would've been for all of us. You're not in any position talk."
Zuko looked slightly taken aback at my outburst.
"Look, I justβ"
"I know what you're thinking," I interrupted. "And I just want to let you know, I partly blame this on you. So my sister better come back okay or it'll be your head."
Zuko was stunned for a moment before giving me a soft nod, "I'm on it."
"Good."
Zuko then mounted Appa and the two set off on their journey.
"You know, you're pretty wise for a kid," Sokka told Aang.
"Thanks, Sokka."
"Usually, it's annoying, but right now I'm just impressed."
"I appreciate that."
"So, can I borrow Momo for a week?"
"Why do you need Momo?" Aang asked.
Sokka shrugs as a response.
[~][~][~]
That night, I was up thinking about what could happen to Katara and Zuko. And what Katara was going to do to that man. As I worried about them, my mind trailed to the memory of the day that the raid happened.
Mom and I were in our family's tent together. I was helping our mother with the chores while Katara and Sokka were playing outside. Everything was normal until eruptions sounded outside of our tent. In fear and shock, I rushed over to Mom and gripped onto the front of her jacket while she wrapped her arms around me. I heard the flap of our tent open and watched as a man dressed as a Fire Nation soldier entered our tent and walked up to us.
"I'm looking for the Southern Water Tribe's last water bender," he glared down at us.
I felt my body tremble as I thought about him taking away me and Katara since we were the only water benders of our tribe.
"Mom..." I whimpered.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Mom replied, somehow with a steady voice.
"I know you're lying..!" the man exclaimed.
"Mom!" Katara shouted as she rushed into the tent but stopped once she saw the soldier.
"Just let them go," Mom said, referring to me and Katara. "And I'll give you the information you want."
"You heard your mother... get out of here!" the man ordered the two of us.
My mom softly pushed on my arms to try and get me to let go. I looked up at her and she weakly smiled down at me. I knew that she was trying to make me feel reassured, but it just didn't work. But understanding what she was trying to say, I let go of her jacket and rushed over to Katara.
"Mom, I'm scared..." Katara whimpered.
"Go find your Dad, girls," Mom ordered. "I'll handle this."
I quickly grabbed a hold of Katara's hand and led the way out of the tent. Together, we ran as fast as we could and found our Dad battling a pair of Fire Nation soldiers.
"Dad, Dad! There's a man in our house!"
"Dad, help! Mom's in trouble!"
The two of us exclaimed as we ran up to our Dad.
"Kya!" Dad yelled before leading the way back to our house.
It seemed like such a short time, but when we got back, both of them were gone.
I felt my eyes sting from tears. Remembering is so hard, but I could never forget what happened.
[~][~][~]
The following day, Zuko returned by himself. He explained to us that Katara stopped herself from taking revenge on the man and said that she wanted to be alone, so he took her somewhere where she wouldn't be bothered. All of us went to mount Appa, but Zuko stopped us to explain that the place he took her was his family's old beach house and that it was safe to stay there until Aang was ready to face the Fire Lord.
Together we agreed to move our camp there, so we packed up everything before flying to where Katara was. When we made it to the beach, we saw Katara sitting at the edge of a dock, staring down at the water. When Appa landed, Aang and Zuko rushed over to Katara while Sokka and I stayed behind. We watched as Aang and Zuko spoke to her. Katara soon stood up and faced the two before embracing Zuko in a hug. Once they released, Katara made her way over to us.
"...I'm proud, Katara," I smiled at her. "Of all the things you could've done, you chose to do the hardest of them all. And you're better for it."
"I'm not sure about that, but... I'm glad that I did what I did," she explained.
The two of us shared a hug before Katara walked up to Sokka. The two conversed, and while they did, Zuko made his way up to me.
"...Can we talk?" he asked abruptly.
I looked harshly up at him as he sincerely looked down at me.
"We have talked," I told him. "We spent about a whole year talking. I think we've talked enough."
I went to walk away, but Zuko grabbed my arm to stop me.
"You know what I mean," he said. "Thereβ There's a lot of things I want to say to you and I'm sure you have some things to say to me. I just... I really want to talk..."
...I want to talk too, butβ
"I'm not ready to talk to you... yet," I explained. "Just give me some time. Okay?"
Zuko slowly released his hold on my arm.
"Okay."

Part One
Kailea |~|
Yesterday, Zuko joined our group as Aang's fire bending teacher. And to be honest, it feels really weird to have him here as a friend and not as someone trying to hunt us down.
I know that I've lived with him before and even... you know... but I had Iroh there too, making sure that he didn't go too far off the rails.
This morning after breakfast, Aang and Zuko left to go train. Although, something felt weird. The whole time they were gone, working on Aang's fire bending, I didn't once hear or see any fire; at all. Sokka even left to go taunt Zuko, since he knew Zuko wouldn't hurt him, and when he got back, he explained that it was all really... dull.
Something's really off... Am I the only one who's unsettled?
[~][~][~]
The day went by pretty quickly. It was already time for dinner and Katara and I just got finished serving everyone when Zuko came from around a pillar to announce something.
"Listen, everybody," he began. "I've got some pretty bad news. I've lost my stuff."
"Don't look at me. I didn't touch your stuff," Toph said, defensively.
"...I'm talking about my fire bending. It's gone," Zuko said grimly.
I knew something was up. How strange...
Katara suddenly started to laugh very obnoxiously.
"I'm sorry," she giggled. "I'm just laughing at the irony. You know, how it would've been nice for us if you'd lost your fire bending a long time ago?"
"Well, it's not lost," said Zuko. "It's just weaker for some reason."
"Maybe you're just not as good as you think you are," Katara glared.
"...Ouch," Toph smirked.
"...I bet it's because I changed sides," said Zuko.
I raised an eyebrow, "That doesn't make any sense."
"I don't know," said Aang. "Maybe it does. Maybe your fire bending comes from rage and you just don't have enough anger to fuel it the way you used to."
"Soooo all we need to do is make Zuko angry," Sokka smiled. "Easy enough."
Sokka began to giggle mischievously as he poked Zuko repeatedly with his sheathed sword.
"Okay, cut it out!" Zuko shouted, making Sokka stop. "Look..! Even if you're right, I don't want to rely on hate and anger anymore. There has to be another way."
"You're gonna need to learn to draw your fire bending from a different source," said Toph. "I recommend the original source."
"How's he supposed to do that? By jumping into a volcano?" Sokka teased.
"No," said Toph. "Zuko needs to go back to whatever the original source of fire bending is."
"So, is it jumping into a volcano?"
"I don't know," Toph set her bowl down before smiling at us. "For earth bending, the original benders were badger moles. One day, when I was little, I ran away and hid in a cave. That's where I met them. They were blind, just like me, so we understood each other. I was able to learn earth bending not just as a martial art but as an extension of my senses. For them, the original earth benders, it wasn't just about fighting. It was their way of interacting with the world."
Wow...
"That's amazing, Toph," Aang awed. "I learned from the Monks, but the original air benders were the sky bison. Maybe you can give me a lesson some time, buddy."
Aang smiled at Appa, who roared as a response.
"Well, this doesn't help me," Zuko frowned. "The original fire benders were the dragons, and they're extinct."
"What do you mean? Roku had a dragon, and there were plenty of dragons when I was a kid," Aang explained.
"Well, they aren't around anymore, okay?" Zuko snapped.
"Okay, okay. Sorry."
"I'm sure there's another way you guys can learn fire bending," I said to Aang. "For water bending, there aren't any original masters. We've just got the Moon and Ocean spirits. The people of the Water Tribe learned water bending from studying the ways of how the spirits interacted with the world. Sort of like the badger moles, except the spirits don't bend. Maybe there are people who learned directly from the dragons that you can find."
"Maybe that could work," said Zuko. "The first people to learn from the dragons were the ancient Sun Warriors."
"'Sun Warriors'?" Aang walked up to Zuko. "Well, I know they weren't around when I was a kid."
"No, they died off thousands of years ago," Zuko explained. "But their civilization wasn't too far from where we are now. Maybe we can learn something by poking around the ruins."
"It's like the Monks used to tell me," Aang began. "Sometimes, the shadows of the past can be felt by the present."
"So what? Maybe you'll pick up some super old Sun Warrior energy just by standing where they stood a thousand years ago?" Sokka asked.
"More or less," said Zuko. "Either I find a new way to fire bend, or the Avatar has to find a new teacher."
[~][~][~]
The boys left in the morning on Appa and they didn't return until two days later. Some of us worried a small bit because we didn't expect them to be gone for so long, while others just shrugged off their long absence as just them taking their time. But all of us were happy when they returned. And Aang and Zuko both seemed very pleased when they got back.
"Hey, guys! We've something to show you," Aang exclaimed once he and Zuko dismounted Appa.
We all sat as an audience as the two boys got ready to perform for us.
"With this technique the dragons showed us, Zuko and I will be unstoppable," Aang said as the two moved in sync.
They danced together as they fire bended large blasts out of their fists.
How entertaining.
We all applauded as the boys came together with their fists connected.
"Yeah, that's a great dance you two learned there," Sokka teased.
"It's not a dance. It's a fire bending form," Zuko corrected.
"We'll just tap dance our way to victory over the Fire Lord," Sokka continued.
"It's a sacred form that happens to be thousands of years old," Zuko growled as he approached Sokka.
"Oh yeah, what's your little form called?" Katara asked.
"...The Dancing Dragon."
We laughed together at the name of the boys' fire bending form.
Part Two
Kailea |~|
It's been a couple of days since Zuko joined us and, speaking honestly, it's going better than I expected. I still haven't talked to him, at all, though...
Just because we have to work together does not mean that I have to forgive him... It's going to take a lot for me to do that.
After a couple of nights of dinner together, Zuko offered to make us all tea.
"No one can make tea like Uncle," Zuko said after pouring everyone a cup. "But hopefully, I learned a thing or two."
Hopefully. The last time you made tea, you almost killed Iroh.
"Would you like to hear Uncle's favorite tea joke?"
"Sure," said Katara.
"I like jokes," said Aang.
"Bring it!" said Toph.
Oh, it's been a while since I've heard this.
I smiled to myself at the memories of Iroh and all of the tea we shared.
"Okay, well, I can't remember how it starts, but the punchline is 'leaf me aloneβ I'm bushed!'" Zuko explained as he handed a cup to The Duke and Haru.
Wow... How can you not remember?
Crickets chirped as we all stared at Zuko.
"Well, it's funnier when Uncle tells it," Zuko said, awkwardly.
"Right... Maybe that's because he remembers the whole thing," Katara smiled when she grabbed her own teacup.
Everyone giggled at that and Zuko lightly smiled. When Zuko came around to me, I grabbed a teacup and cleared my throat.
"Allow me," I said. "The joke is: A tea server walks over to one of his customers and hands him a bushel of tea leaves. The customer thanks him for the nice gift. Later the tea server comes over and hands the customer another bushel of tea leaves. The tea server keeps bringing the customer tea leaves when the customer finally says 'leaf me alone, I'm bushed!'"
Everyone erupts with laughter. I smile at everyone's jovial forms when I felt eyes on me. I looked over my shoulder to see Zuko smiling down at me. I ignore him and turn back to everyone as I take a sip of tea.
"It's nice to get a chance to relax a little," Toph smiled as she and Teo were each handed a cup. "It hardly ever happens."
Zuko continued to hand out cups until he made it to Sokka. The boys left the group for a small bit before returning, acting as if nothing happened.
That's weird...
I shrugged my shoulders, deciding to forget the whole thing.
[~][~][~]
In the morning, the boys were gone. In their place, Momo held a note. Katara, Toph, Aang, and I all approached Momo and took the note from him.
"What does it say?" Toph asked.
"'Need meat. Gone fishing. Back in a few days. Sokka and Zuko.'" Katara read. "'One more thing. Aang, practice your fire bending while I'm gone. Do twenty sets of fire fists and ten hot squats every time you hear a badger frog croak. Zuko.'"
Aang lied back down on his sleeping bag just before a badger frog's croak echoed through the temple.
"Nobody else has homework," Aang sighed as he stood up. "One hot squat, two hot squat, three hot squat, four hot squatβ"
"Do you guys not find it a bit weird that Sokka and Zuko are suddenly buddy-buddy and disappearing together?" I asked Katara and Toph.
"A little, I guess," said Katara. "But I'm sure they are just fishing. Nothing to worry about, right?"
"Boys will be boys," Toph shrugged.
"Maybe you are right," I told Katara.
[~][~][~]
Nope. I was right. They weren't fishing...
Just like their note, the boys returned a couple of days later from when they left. But with them, they brought a whole Fire Nation airship! And it scared the heck out of everyone at the temple. We all got prepared to attack until Sokka and Zuko exited the ship.
"What are you doing in this thing?" Katara asked them. "What happened to the war balloon?"
"It kinda got destroyed," Zuko smiled.
"Sounds like a crazy fishing trip," said Aang.
"I don't think they were fishing..." I sweatdropped.
"Did you at least get some good meat?" Toph asked.
"I did," Sokka smiled. "The best meat of all. The meat of friendship and fatherhood."
From the airship, three people came walking out. Dad and two strangers. One was a large man and the other was a cute teenage girl.
"I'm new. What's up, everybody?" the man asked.
"Dad..." Katara and I said together.
"How're my girls?" Dad asked as the three of us embraced.
"How're you here?" Katara asked before we all turned to Sokka.
"Sokka, what did you do? Where did you go?" I asked.
"We kind of went to a Fire Nation prison," Sokka explained.
Quickly, Katara grabbed Sokka's hand to pull him into a group hug with me, Katara, and Dad. Together, we shared another loving hug, just like the one we shared right before the invasion.
'We'... Sokka said 'we went to a Fire Nation prison'... Zuko led him there...
"Seriously, you guys didn't find any meat?" Toph asked.
Everyone shared a hefty laugh at Toph's bluntness before gathering everyone in the temple to introduce our new group members. But as Sokka gathered everyone, I swiftly made my way over to Zuko for a quick moment. I lightly placed my hand on his back to gain his attention and he turned around to address me.
"...Thanks," I said, hesitantly. "For... bringing my dad back."
Zuko slowly started to gain an eager smile, "Y-Yeah, of course. Well, it was your brother's idea... b-but I did, you know, help him toβ"
"I know," I interrupted. "So, thanks."
I quickly walked away to join the others, leaving Zuko far behind me.
Like I said, it's going to take a lot to make me truly forgive him.

Chapter 10-His Return
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
We flew all throughout the night, barely having any time to rest. We had to get to the Western Air Temple as soon as possible, so stopping wasn't an option. A couple of hours ago, Appa got tired of carrying all of us and we decided that we needed to walk the rest of the way while Appa rests up.
I feel like my feet are going to fall off... Although, I'm sure this is much better than a Fire Nation prison.
"This is humiliating," Katara sighed.
"Do you mean getting thoroughly spanked by the Fire Nation or having to walk all the way to the Western Air Temple?" Sokka asked.
"Try both," I said.
"Sorry, guys, but Appa gets tired carrying all these people," Aang explained.
"...I wonder how the rest of the troops are," said Haru. "They're probably on their way to a prison. Seems like my dad just got out, now he's going back in."
"...I miss Pipsqueak," said The Duke.
"I miss not having blisters on my feet," Sokka whined.
"...Hey, we're here!" Toph smiled. "I can feel it."
I looked up from my sore feet to see that we were at the edge of a large, rocky crevasse.
I don't see anything.
"Uh, I think your feet need their eyes checked," said Katara.
"No, she's right, we are here," said Aang.
Both Sokka and I glanced around for a bit, looking for something resembling any sort of building. There was nothing. So we turned to the Avatar and gave him a weak and confused shrug.
"Wow, it's amazing," Toph awed.
"Everyone, hop on Appa," Aang smiled.
We all mounted the flying bison before he flew into the crevasse to reveal the beautiful combination of contrasting architecture. The temple had normal platforms and stairs that traveled into the earth walls and were accompanied by upside-down temples that hung from the top of the crevasse's ledge. Appa flew towards a fountain in the middle of the temple and landed. We all dismounted and stared at the construction of the Air Nomads.
"It's so different from the Northern Air Temple," Teo awed. "I wonder if there are any secret rooms."
"Let's go check it out," Haru motioned for Teo and The Duke to followed him up a set of stairs.
The three ran off together to explore the temple. Aang went to join them but was interrupted when Katara stopped him with his own glider.
"You guys go. I think we need to talk about some things," Katara waved them off.
"Why can't I go?" Aang asked once the trio was gone.
"We need to decide what we're gonna do now, and since you're the Avatar, maybe you should be apart of this," Katara explained.
"Fair enough. So, what's the new plan?" Aang asked as we all sat in a circle.
"Well, if you ask me, the new plan is the old plan," Sokka smiled. "You just need to master all four elements and confront the Fire Lord before the comet comes."
"Oh, yeah, that's great, no problem, I'll just do that," Aang responded sarcastically.
"Aang, no one said it's gonna be easy," Katara frowned.
"Well, it's not even gonna be possible," said Aang. "Where am I supposed to get a fire bending teacher?"
"...We could look for Jeong-Jeong," Katara suggested.
Who?
"Yeah, right," Aang lied back. "Like we'll ever run into Jeong-Jeong again."
"Who's... oh, never mind. If it's important, I'll find out," Toph crossed her arms.
"Same here, Toph," I sighed.
"Oh, well, guess we can't come up with anybody. Why don't we just take a nice tour around the temple?" Aang smiled before taking off on his glider.
"What's up with him?" Toph asked.
I shrugged, "Maybe having fun is his way of coping with the invasion loss..."
"There's gotta be someone who can teach him fire bending," Sokka thought for a moment.
[~][~][~]
After a good hour of discussing options for a teacher for Aang, we clearly could not come up with a good match.
Even if we did know someone to teach Aang fire bending, how would we even find them?
Tired of sitting around and practically doing nothing, we all mounted Appa to go find Aang. We weren't done talking about our 'new plan' and it was important that Aang was there to listen in and add his own opinions, since, you know, he would have to carry out the plan.
"Aang, can we talk about you learning fire bending now?" Katara called once we caught up to him.
"What? The wind is too loud in my ears! Check out this loop!" Aang exclaimed before doing a loop in the air.
"Aang, I think we should be making some plans about our future," said Sokka.
"Okay. We can do that while I show you the giant pai sho table," Aang said before we landed back at the fountain. "Oh, and you're gonna love the all-day echo chamber."
"I think that'll have to wait," Toph said after we all dismounted.
We all looked at her curiously before she pointed behind her. Appa moved to reveal the one and only Fire Nation prince.
"Hello, Zuko here."
...Whatβ What is he doing here?!
I felt my chest burn in anger as I looked at him. I glared before we all stood ready to fight him.
"Hey, I heard you guys flying around down there, so I just thought I'd wait for you here," he smiled, awkwardly.
What is he trying to pull? No fire, no dual swords...
Appa roared before giving Zuko a big lick.
"I know you must be surprised to see me here," he continued.
"Not really, since you've followed us all over the world," Sokka snapped.
"Right... well, uh..." he drawled. "Anyway, what I wanted to tell you about is that I've changed and I, uh, I'm good now. And, well, I think I should join your group. Oh, and I can teach fire bending... to you [Aang]."
Oh, you've changed..? You expect me to believe that after the first hundred times to told me and then went behind my back?! You really think that I'd give you another chance after that?
"See, I, uh..."
"You want to what now?" Toph asked.
"You can't possibly think that any of us would trust you, can you?" Katara snapped. "I mean, how stupid do you think we are?"
"Yeah, all you've ever done is try to hunt us down and capture Aang," Sokka added.
"I've done some good things," Zuko argued. "I mean, I could've stolen your bison in Ba Sing Se, but I set him free. That's something."
You were going to steal him, if Iroh and I didn't follow you and convince you otherwise.
Appa gave Zuko another small lick of appreciation.
"Appa does seem to like him," said Toph.
"He probably just covered himself in honey or something so that Appa would lick him," Sokka explained. "I'm not buying it."
"...I can understand why you wouldn't trust me and I know I've made some mistakes in the pastβ"
That's an understatement...
"Like when you attack our village? And then kidnapped our sister?"
...Don'tβ
"Or when you stole my mother's necklace and used it to track us down and capture us?"
"Look, I admit I've done some awful things," said Zuko. "I was wrong to try to capture you, and I'm sorry that I attacked the Water Tribe and hurt your family. And I never should've sent that Fire Nation assassin after youβ"
You sent the third-eyed freak?!
"I'm gonna try to stopβ"
"Wait, you sent Combustion Man after us?" Sokka unsheathed his boomerang.
"Well, that's not his name, but..."
"Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to insult your friend," said Sokka.
"He's not my friend..!" Zuko snapped.
"That guy locked me and Katara in jail and tried to blow us all up!" Toph exclaimed.
"...Why aren't you saying anything?" Zuko asked Aang. "You once said you thought we could be friends."
Whoa... How come I haven't heard about this? Aang really said that..?
"You know I have good in me."
Aang looked over at all of us. Sokka looked back at him and shook his head.
"There's no way we can trust you after everything you've done," Aang told him. "We'll never let you join us."
I watched Zuko's eyes widen a bit before locking with mine. I noticed his mouth open very slightly, like he was about to speak to me, but I clenched my eyes shut and looked down, showing him that I didn't want to hear anything from him.
"You need to get out of here, now," Katara ordered.
"...I'm trying to explain that I'm not that person anymore," Zuko insisted as he took a few steps towards us.
"Either you leave or we attack," Sokka stopped him.
"...If you won't accept me as a friend, then maybe you'll take me as a prisoner," Zuko hung his head as he kneeled down and placed his wrists forward.
You don't get it, do you? We want nothing to do with you...
"No, we won't," Katara said as she water bended a stream at him, knocking him over. "Get out of here and don't come back. And if we ever see you again... well, we'd better not see you again."
Zuko gave us one last shocked look before dejectedly walking away, leaving wet footprints behind him.
...Why? Why would you ever come back..?
[~][~][~]
"Why would he try to fool us like that?" Katara asked as we started to set up our sleeping bags.
"Obviously, he wants to lead us into some kind of trap," said Sokka.
"This is just like when we were in prison together in Ba Sing Se," Katara explained. "He starts talking about his mother and making it seem like he's an actual human being with feelings."
...he's never mentioned his mother to me...
"He wants you to trust him and feel sorry for him so you let your guard down, then he strikes," said Sokka.
"The thing is, it worked," Katara frowned. "I did feel sorry for him. I felt like he was really confused and hurt. But obviously when the time came he made his choice and we paid the price. We can't trust him."
"I kind of have a confession to make," said Aang. "Remember when you two were sick and I got captured by Zhao?"
"And you made us suck on frozen frogs?"
What?
"How could I forget? I had a wart on the flap that hangs down from the back of my throat for a month," Sokka pointed.
"Sokka, I looked at it and told you there was nothing there," Katara glared.
"I could feel it... It's my throatal flap!"
"Anyway, when Zhao had me chained up, it was Zuko who came in and got me out," Aang explained. "He risked his life to save me."
"No way," Katara shot. "I'm sure he only did it so he could capture you himself."
"Yeah, face it, Aang, you're nothing but a big prize to him," Sokka added.
"You're probably right," said Aang.
"And what was all that crazy stuff about setting Appa free?" Katara asked. "What a liar."
"Actually, that bit was true," I sighed. "Of course, he had some influence from me and his uncle, but he did pick the locks on the chains to get Appa out."
"Oh, hooray! In a lifetime of evil, at least he didn't add animal cruelty to the list," Sokka rolled his eyes. "And why are you of all people defending him?"
"Who said I was defending him?" I crossed my arms. "I'm just stating the facts... I've spent the most time with this guy, I've been through his whole 'changing process' with him, I've even tried helping him. And when it came down to it... he betrayed me... I would never defend him."
I've defended him a hundred times before... I'm not making that mistake again.
"Did you guys even notice that when he was talking to us, he was being sincere?" Toph asked. "Maybe you're all just letting your hurt feelings keep you from thinking clearly."
"Easy for you to say, you weren't there when he had us attacked by pirates," Katara snapped.
"Or when he burned down Kyoshi Island," Sokka added.
"Or when he tried to capture me at the Fire Temple," Aang finished.
"Why would you even try to defend him?" Katara shook with anger.
"Because, Katara, you're all ignoring one crucial fact," Toph snapped. "Aang needs a fire bending teacher. We can't think of a single person in the world to do the job. Now, one shows up on a silver platter and you won't even think about it?"
...I just don't think I can feel... safe with Zuko here.
"I'm not having Zuko as my teacher," Aang frowned.
"You're darn right you're not, buddy," said Sokka.
"Well, I guess that's settled," Katara crossed her arms.
Toph groans, "I'm beginning to wonder who's really the blind one around here."
Toph stomped off. Still heated from our argument, we set up our camp in silence.
[~][~][~]
The evening came and gone very smoothly. We had a light dinner that somehow put us all to sleep very quickly, which made the sun seem to rise even quicker. Once awake, Katara and I made rice for everyone as breakfast.
"Has anyone seen Toph?" Katara asked as she served a bowl to The Duke.
"I haven't seen her since she stormed off yesterday," Sokka yawned.
"Maybe she's just exploring the Air Temple," Haru suggested. "There are some pretty fun spots to practice earth bending."
I hummed, "I still think she would be back by now. She left at sunset and now the sun's fully risen."
"I think we should go look for her," said Katara.
"Oh, let her have fun with her rocks," Sokka took a seat. "I'm in no rush to have her yelling at us again."
"We can go check for her," The Duke smiled.
"Yeah, I want to ride that tunnel down to the hall of statues again," said Teo. "It'll work a lot better now that I fixed my brakes."
Teo sped off with Haru and The Duke on his tail. The trio disappeared into the temple again, and once they were gone, a large crash erupted behind us. We turned to see Toph clumsily crawling through a tunnel and sliding down a pile of rocks.
"Toph, what happened?" Katara exclaimed as we ran up to her.
"My feet got burned," she said.
"Oh, no, what happened?"
"I just told you, my feet got burned."
"She means, 'how', Toph," I said.
"Well, I kind of went to see Zuko last night."
"You what?"
"Why?"
"Zuko?"
"I just thought he could be helpful to us and if I talked to him, maybe we could work something out," Toph explained.
As Toph was talking, Katara and I began to heal her reddening feet. Katara got her right foot while I got her left.
"So he attacked you?" Sokka asked.
"Well, he did and he didn't," Toph frowned. "It was sort of an accident."
"But he did fire bend at you?" Aang tried to clarify.
Toph sighed, "Yes."
"See, you trusted Zuko and you got burned... literally," said Sokka.
"It's gonna take a while for your feet to get better," Katara said as we removed the water.
"It would've been better if we could've started healing them sooner," I said and Katara nodded in agreement.
"Zuko's clearly too dangerous to be left alone," said Sokka. "We're gonna have to go after him."
"I hate to go looking for a fight, but you're right," Aang frowned. "After what he did to Toph, I don't think we have a choice."
"He's crafty, but we'll find a way to capture him," said Sokka.
"Maybe just invite him back here," Toph suggested. "He's already offered himself up as a prisoner once."
Toph rolled onto her back as Aang and Sokka picked her up.
"Yeah... Get him to come back and say he'll be our prisoner then we'll jump him and really make him our prisoner," Sokka smiled. "He'll never suspect it."
I shook my head, "Oh, what would we do without Sokka, Master of Surprise."
"Ahh, that's the stuff," Toph exhaled as Sokka and Aang placed her feet in the fountain. "Now I know how the rest of you guys feel. Not being able to see with your feet stinks."
"It's not all bad," I shrugged as Aang brought a towel over.
Katara and Sokka went to spread out the towel when an explosion erupted on the platform above us. We all had the same idea of who it was and shared a worried glance before Sokka and Aang picked up Toph.
"Stop!" Zuko shouted.
We followed the shout and found Combustion Man and Zuko standing on an upside-down temple near us.
"I don't want you hunting the Avatar anymore! The mission is off!" Zuko yelled as we ducked behind the fountain for cover. "I'm ordering you to stop!"
Another shot from Combustion Man came soaring over us and exploded nearby.
"If you keep attacking, I won't pay youβ All right, I'll pay you double to stop!"
Combustion Man fired again, but it was really off. We all looked over the edge of the fountain to watch as Zuko fought the man with the third eye. Combustion Man turned away from us to face Zuko. He fired at him and Zuko brought up a wall of fire as a shield. The explosion mixed with the fire, and when the dust cleared, Zuko was gone.
...no.
Aang jumped out from behind the cover to try and fight off Combustion Man. Aang tried some air bending moves which Combustion Man just shot through. As Aang fought off Combustion Man, Sokka and I moved Toph behind a wall for better cover. When Aang was blown away by an explosion, Katara tried to strike Combustion Man with multiple ice picks. Of course, the ice did nothing to him, but it did give us time to hide. There was a pause after Aang and Katara joined us behind the wall. I held my breath as the long silence was interrupted by another explosion.
"He's going to blast this whole place right off the cliffside," Toph exclaimed.
Another explosion erupted.
"I can't step out to water bend at him without getting blown up," said Katara. "And I can't get a good enough angle on him from down here."
"...I know how to get an angle on him," said Sokka.
Sokka quickly moved to the edge of the wall and traced where the explosions were coming from with his boomerang. Sokka cocked his arm back, ready to launch the weapon.
"All right, buddy, don't fail me now," Sokka said before throwing the boomerang.
The boomerang soared through the air. We all watched as the weapon swung around the rock pillars and traveled towards the man with the third eye.
"...Yeah, boomerang!" Sokka happily ran out from behind our cover.
We followed him as he caught his boomerang. We looked up at Combustion Man to see him on the ground, but he was slowly getting back up.
"Aw, boomerang!" Sokka whined before we all got back behind the wall.
We waited for another barrage of explosions to erupt near us. As we waited in silence, we were suddenly surprised when a giant explosion erupted nowhere near us. We came out from our cover to see the temple that Combustion Man was standing on was now falling into the crevasse. We all stared down at it, completely shocked before glancing back up to see Zuko climbing up a vine back up to a platform.
[~][~][~]
We waited for Zuko and watched him as he climbed back to the fountain platform that we were on. He approached us slowly as we all stared at him.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but thanks, Zuko," said Aang.
"Hey, what about me? I did the boomerang thing," said Sokka.
"Listen, I know I didn't explain myself very well yesterday," Zuko began. "I've been through a lot in the past few years, and it's been hard. But I'm realizing that I had to go through all those things to learn the truth. I thought I had lost my honor and that somehow my father could return it to me. But I know now that no one can give you your honor. It's something you earn for yourself by choosing to do what's right. All I want now is to play my part in ending this war. And I know my destiny is to help you restore balance to the world. I'm sorry for what I did to you Toph. It was an accident. Fire can be dangerous and wild. So as a fire bender, I need to be more careful and control my bending so I don't hurt people unintentionally."
"...I think you are supposed to be my fire bending teacher," said Aang.
...I can't believe this.
"When I first tried to learn fire bending, I burned Katara. And after that, I never wanted to fire bend again. But now I know you understand how easy it is to hurt the people you love. I'd like you to teach me."
Aang bowed to Zuko, and Zuko smiled.
"Thank you," he bowed back to Aang. "I'm so happy you've accepted me into your group."
"Not so fast," said Aang. "I still have to ask my friends if it's okay with them. Toph, you're the one that Zuko burned, what do you think?"
"...Go ahead and let him join," Toph smiled. "It'll give me plenty of time to get back at him for burning my feet."
"...Sokka?"
"...Hey, all I want is to defeat the Fire Lord," he stated simply. "If you think this is the way to do it, then I'm all for it."
"Katara?"
Katara sent a glare to Zuko before looking at Aang.
"I'll go along with whatever you think is right," she said.
Aang smiled before looking over at me.
"...Kailea? You said so yourself, you've spent the most time with him. You seem to know who he is. What do you think?"
I looked down at my feet.
I thought to myself before that I wouldn't feel safe with him around, but after what he did today... maybe I can live with it. Doesn't mean I have to enjoy it...
I looked back up at Aang and gave a hard nod to show my reluctant acceptance.
"I won't let you down, I promise," Zuko smiled.
Without another word, I watched as everyone walked to their rooms in the temple, leaving me and Zuko. I noticed him staring at me, so I met his eyes with the angriest, hardest glare I could muster. I watched as his smile faded into a shocked and upset frown. I quickly turned around and began to stomp off.
"Kailea, Iβ"
I ignored him as I continued to stomp off somewhere in the temple where I could be alone.

Chapter 9-The Eclipse
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
Today was The Day of Black Sun. The day of the eclipse, the day of the invasion. As scary as invading the Fire Nation sounded, I felt that I was ready.
I've trained under a master, traveled almost all over the world, and fought many different people with many different abilities. I'm ready.
Dressed in our Water Tribe clothing, Katara and I sat beside Sokka as he stared at and pondered over his invasion plan and maps of the Fire Nation. To help him relax, Katara gave him a cup of water and a small, reassuring smile.
"Top of the morning, Momo!" Aang came skipping over from his koala sheep pelt bed.
"Sounds like you slept well," Katara stood up.
"Like a baby moose lion," said Aang. "I'm ready to face the Fire Lord."
"So what's your strategy for taking him down?" Toph asked. "Going to get your glow on and hit him with a little Avatar State action?"
"I can't," Aang frowned. "When Azula shot me with lightning, my seventh chakra was locked, cutting off my connection to all the cosmic energy in the universe."
"...You know what I just heard? Blah-blah spiritual mumbo jumbo, blah-blah something about space," Toph mocked.
"Don't worry, Aang," I said. "I'm sure you can face the Fire Lord without the Avatar State. And even if you do need it, you'll figure something out. You always do."
Aang smiled sadly at me before giving me a small nod.
"Oh, no," Katara said, making me turn and see the fog that was on the horizon. "Guys, do you think the fog will delay the invasion?"
"...No," Sokka stood up. "That is the invasion."
From the fog, five Southern Water Tribe sailboats emerged. Excitedly, we all ran to the shore where the boats were going to stop. Together, Aang and Toph created five docks using their earth bending. All of the sailboats docked together before Katara, Sokka, and I ran up to Dad's boat. Once Dad was off the boat, Katara and I embraced him
"You made it, Dad!" Katara exclaimed.
"We missed you," I said.
"Were you able to locate everyone I told you to find?" Sokka asked.
"I did," Dad smiled. "But I'm a little worried, Sokka. Some of these men aren't exactly the warrior type."
"Whooo-wheee!" two men dressed in leaves and tree bark came marching off of Dad's boat. "This place ain't nothing like a swamp. What'd you reckon that is, Tho? Some kind of Fire Nation exploding trap that would eat ya?"
"It's just a rock, Due."
"Well, I'll be."
"...Are those the swamp guys you mentioned earlier?" I asked Katara who nodded.
"Is it just me, or are those fellas a little loose in the leaf hat?" Dad asked.
"I just wish they would wear pants," said Bato.
"Pants are an illusion. And so is death," said a third swamp man.
[~][~][~]
Katara walked with me as she explained who everyone was. We already got to meet the swamp people. Which was... uh, nice. But before Katara could introduce me to anyone else, Toph and Aang wanted to talk for a bit. While we were talking, a teenage boy with long brown hair and brown facial hair with Earth Kingdom clothing came walking up to us.
"Hi, Katara," he smiled.
"Haru, it's so good to see you," Katara exclaimed as she softly embraced the boy named Haru.
"Toph, Kailea, this is Haru," Aang introduced. "When we met him, his town was controlled by the Fire Nation. So he had to hide his earth bending."
"Katara inspired me and my father to take back our village," Haru explained and Katara blushed.
"You helped us find our courage, Katara," said an old man as he approached Haru and Katara. "Now, we're here to help you."
This must be Haru's father...
"No way, is that..."
Toph was interrupted when she was embraced by a large, fat man in Earth Kingdom clothing.
"Hippo happy to see Blind Bandit!" the man exclaimed.
"You guys here for a rematch?" Toph asked.
"Negatory," said another man in Earth Kingdom clothing. "The Boulder and The Hippo no longer fight for others' entertainment. Now, we fight for our Kingdom!"
"...Sweet!"
What's going on..?
"Kailea, meet The Hippo and The Boulder," Aang smiled. "We met them when we were searching for an earth bending teacher."
"Oh, I see..." I drawled, still very confused about the situation.
Suddenly, a crash erupted from one of the sailboats causing all of us to rush over. From the sailboat came a teenage boy in a wheelchair and a man with choppy eyebrows, both in refugee clothing. Behind them were Pipsqueak and The Duke.
"Was that a new invention?" Sokka asked the man.
"Yes," he said. "But unfortunately, the incendiary capabilities of peanut sauce proved to be a failure."
Is that why you all are licking a light brown substance off of your clothes..?
"You're making peanut sauce bombs?" Sokka asked.
"They're destructive," said Pipsqueak.
"And delicious!" The Duke added.
"Were you able to complete work on the plans I sent you?" Sokka asked the man.
"Yes, I was," he smiled. "And I think the Fire Nation will be quite surprised."
"Aang, my dad and I made this for you," the teen in the wheelchair smiled as he handed Aang a stick.
Aang grabbed the stick from the teen. Aang placed one end of the stick on the ground and from the stick emerged two sets of blue wings.
"A new glider!" Aang exclaimed. "This is amazing."
"And as a special feature, I added a snack compartment," the man said before twisting an extra limb of the glider that made food fall out of it.
"Oh, well, I'm sure that will come in handy," Aang said awkwardly.
"Kailea," Sokka caught my attention. "This is Teo, by the way. He and his dad are inventors."
"It's nice to meet you," the teen in the wheelchair stuck out his hand.
"You too," I smiled as I shook his hand.
I turned to Sokka, "You've met a lot of unique people on your adventures, huh?"
"You could say that," Sokka shrugged.
[~][~][~]
After meeting everyone and handing out breakfast to them all, it was time to discuss the invasion plan. Since it was Sokka's plan, we all decided that Sokka should lead the meeting. Toph, Aang, Katara, Dad, and I all sat beside the make-shift stage while everyone sat in front of the stage, as an audience. Sokka shook in his boots as he prepared to explain his plan.
"Don't worry, you'll do great," Dad told him and we all smiled.
Sokka took a deep breath before marching onto the stage.
"Good morning, everyone! Ah!" Sokka tripped and awkwardly got back up. "Um... so, as you know, today we're invading the Fire Nation. I mean, I know you know that. Because otherwise why else would you be here... Anyway..."
Sokka awkwardly laughed before putting up his Fire Nation maps.
"The Fire Lord's palace is here... Uh, no, uh waitβ huh wait, it's here."
Sokka pointed after flipping through the maps.
"And, uh, there's an eclipse today. And Aang's going to fight the Fire Lord. And the fire benders won't have any fire to use, so that's good for us. And, umβ I'm sorry, let me start at the beginning... Katara and I discovered Aang frozen in an iceberg. Now I didn't like Aang at first, but I grew to love him over time, then we went over to the Southern Air Temple, where Aang used to live, and then we met Suki who is a Kyoshi warrior..."
"Wow, when he says beginning, he means the beginning beginning," Katara whispered.
Dad lightly shook his head before walking up to Sokka and ending his rant.
"Thank you, Sokka. It's okay, why don't you take a break?" Dad whispered the last part.
Dejectedly, Sokka hung his head and took Dad's spot beside the stage.
"Let me just clarify a few points for everyone," Dad began. "Today is The Day of Black Sun. And I want to thank you all for your self-sacrifice and your courage. There are two steps to the invasion. A naval stage and then a land stage. To gain sea access to the Fire Nation capital, we have to get past our first major obstacle here; The Great Gates of Azulon. Next, we hit the land, and we hit hard. We must fight past their battlements and secure the plaza tower. Once we do that, it's up to the royal palace. At that point, the eclipse will begin."
"Excuse me," The Boulder raised his hand. "The Boulder is confused. Isn't the point to invade during the eclipse? When the fire benders are powerless?"
"The eclipse only lasts eight minutes," Dad explained. "Not enough time for the whole invasion. And the royal palace is heavily guarded by fire benders. So that's where we'll need the eclipse advantage the most. When this is finished, the Avatar will have defeated the Fire Lord. We will have control of the Fire Nation capital and this war will be over!"
Dad raised his hand in the air causing all of the audience to follow and cheer, including us.
[~][~][~]
Together, we all prepared for the invasion. The men, and Appa, got dressed in their armor while Katara and I filled our waterskins, having four between us. Even Aang shaved his head to show his arrow.
"Ready?" I smiled at Katara.
"Yeah!" she smiled back.
The two of us tightly embraced before making our way to the sailboats. Once everyone was aboard, we started off towards the gate. We only knew when we got there because of its large landmarks of Fire Lord Azulon and some golden dragons.
"I don't see any gates," Katara said once we made it.
"Katara, Kailea, you and the swamp benders whip up a fog cover," Dad ordered.
"We'll sneak by that statues just like we sneaked by that Fire Navy blockade," said Tho.
Following Dad's orders, we separated the swamp benders equally across the sailboats before moving together to water bend and create a thick fog around us.
"Keep it up, we're almost through," said Dad.
Suddenly, an alarm sounded and large nets arose from the water to connect Auzlon and the dragons. To make matters worse, the nets caught fire, making them absolutely impossible to pass through, from above the water, and motorboats with Fire Nation soldiers came charging for the sailboats.
"Everyone, below deck."
Everyone aboard all of the ships went below the deck to board the submarines. With the swamp benders already separated between the boats, we knew that all of the submarines were ready to go. Katara and I were together, along with two swamp benders, and the four of us bended together to move the submarine forward towards the Fire Nation.
[~][~][~]
Currently, we're taking our first and only break during the invasion. The submarines don't have enough air to supply us all the way to land, so we stopped the submarines just above the water's surface to allow air to get in, but also to allow people to get some fresh air and space. Katara and I found Toph and Sokka and came to the surface of the submarine with them. There, Aang glided over to us.
"So, this is it, huh?" Aang asked.
"Are you ready for the Fire Nation to know the Avatar's alive?" Sokka asked.
"...I'm ready," Aang said determinedly.
Aang and Sokka came together to lock arms before we all embraced in a group hug.
"I hope you kick some serious Fire Lord butt, Twinkle-toes," Toph smiled.
"Everyone, listen up," Dad announced. "The next time we resurface, it'll be on the beaches. So stay alert and fight smart. Now break time's over, back in the subs."
"Good luck, Aang. You got this," I placed my hand on his shoulder before walking back into the sub with Toph and Sokka.
Since Aang had to fly ahead of all of us, Katara had to swim with Appa, leaving me with the swamp benders. When it was time to go, we water bended together to get the submarine underwater and moved it towards the Fire Nation once again.
[~][~][~]
Once we got to the shore, we heard alarms sound as harpoons were shot at us. Luckily, we were able to water bend the subs out of the harpoons' way and made it to the gate. We fired two torpedos into the gate and entered the Fire Nation.
Once we got the submarines onto the shore, the earth-bending-powered tanks led the way with all of the soldiers following. The swamp benders stayed behind to protect the subs while everyone marched ahead. I looked up and watched as Appa landed by the subs and Katara dismounted. I ran to Katara and when we met eyes we nodded before getting ready to fight.
"Guys!" Sokka came charging towards us on a rhino, with Dad right behind him. "We've got to take out the battlements on top of the ledges. We need Appa!"
Katara and I looked around to notice the battlements that were firing down on all of the Earth Kingdom artillery.
"Let's go!" Katara said as she took Appa's reins.
Sokka, Dad, and I all mounted onto Appa's saddle before taking off. We flew Appa by the battlements, having Sokka and Dad take down one while Katara and I used our water bending to each take down another. We made it to the last two battlements and landed Appa on the ledge.
"You three take that battlement, I've got this one," Dad said before taking off. "Watch each others' backs."
I don't like the idea of Dad going by himself...
Ignoring my thoughts, I followed Sokka and Katara as they ran inside the battlement. Sokka cut through the doors and Katara and I each froze one of the soldiers inside. To finish the job, Sokka climbed up the ladder to destroy their ballista before leading the way outside. We stopped and watched as Dad climbed into the battlement from the roof and the ballista fired. We waited as Dad came limping out of the battlement, clutching his side, and then collapsed.
"Dad!"
The three of us raced over and found that he was still alive, just badly wounded. We quickly got Dad onto Appa and flew down to get some cover. Once he was on the ground, I immediately started to heal his wound.
"How are you feeling, Dad? Is this easing the pain at all?" I asked.
"A little bit, yeah," Dad groaned. "I need to get back... to the troops."
"Dad, your injury's pretty bad. You can't fight anymore," I told him.
"Everyone's counting on me to lead this mission," Dad frowned. "I won't let them down."
Dad tried to stand up but just fell back over in pain.
"Can't you heal him any faster?" Sokka asked.
"This is all I can do, Sokka," I said, sadly.
"...I'll do it," said Sokka.
"No offense, Sokka, but you're not exactly Mr. Healing Hands," said Katara.
"No, I'll lead the invasion force," Sokka stood up.
"Don't be crazy, Sokka," said Katara.
"Maybe I am a little crazy but the eclipse is about to start, and we need to be up that volcano by the time it does," Sokka explained.
"You can do this. I'm proud of you, Son," Dad said.
"I still think you're crazy, but I'm proud of you, too," Katara smiled.
"Same here," I said. "And this is your plan, Sokka. I feel that it's only right that you lead it."
Sokka smiled before putting on his wolf helmet and mounting Appa.
"Yip yip."
Sokka and Appa flew away and I turned to Katara.
"Katara, heal Dad's injury with me. Maybe... there is a way we could heal him faster," I said.
"Do you really think it'll work?" Katara asked.
"We don't really have any other choice," I said. "Besides, it can only help him, right?"
Katara nodded in understanding before placing her hands close to mine, helping me heal Dad. We took a few minutes of silence to heal Dad before he told me and Katara that he wanted to be with his troops. Katara and I tried to stop him, but he insisted and even stood up on his own. But, although he stood up, he couldn't keep his balance. Katara and I caught him before he fell down and finally agreed to let him march forward. Katara helped Dad walk while I marched a few feet ahead of them in case anyone was to attack.
"Dad!" Sokka exclaimed once we got Dad past the broken wall of the Fire Nation. "You're on your feet again."
Sokka and Toph made their way towards the three of us.
"Thanks to your sisters," Dad took a seat. "I'm in no shape to fight, but maybe there is some way I can help."
"Everything's going smoothly and the eclipse hasn't even kicked in yet," Sokka kneeled down to Dad's level.
"Let's hope our luck holds out," Dad said as Katara took a few steps forward. "Katara, you seem distracted. Is something wrong?"
"Yeah. Is thatβ Is that Aang?" she asked.
We all followed her eyes to see Aang's gliding figure soaring towards us.
"What?" Sokka asked as Aang landed. "Please tell me you're here because the Fire Lord turned out to be a big wimp, and you didn't even need the eclipse to take him down?"
"He wasn't home. No one was. The entire palace city is abandoned," Aang explained.
Oh, no...
"They knew," said Sokka.
"It's over. The Fire Lord is probably long gone. Far away on some remote island where he'll be safe during the eclipse," Aang frowned.
"No. My instincts tell me he wouldn't go too far," said Sokka. "He would have a secret bunker. Somewhere he could go and be safe during a siege, but still be close enough to lead his nation."
"Like, somewhere he could retreat to in case of something he wasn't expecting? Somewhere close," I asked.
"Exactly," Sokka nodded.
"If it's an underground secret bunker we're looking for, I'm just the girl to find it," said Toph.
"The Mechanist gave me this timing device," Sokka pulled out a small hexagonal tool. "It looks like we've got about ten minutes until the full eclipse. Ten minutes to find the Fire Lord."
"We can still do this," Aang smiled. "We can still win the day."
"Wait," said Katara. "If they knew we were coming, it could all be a trap. Maybe we should use the time we have left to make sure we all get out of here safely."
"Everyone who's here today came prepared to risk everything for this mission," Dad sat up. "They know what's at stake. If there's still a chance and there's still hope, I think they would want Aang to go for it."
"What do you think?" Sokka asked Aang. "You're the one who has to face the Fire Lord. Whatever you decide, I'm with you."
Aang stood up and faced the volcano, "I've got to try."
[~][~][~]
Our new plan was now underway. Aang, Toph, and Sokka took Appa up the volcano in search of the Fire Lord's underground bunker while Katara and I helped Dad with the invading troops. Katara continued to be a crutch for Dad while I stayed ahead and protected the two from any straying fire. The Earth Kingdom troops led the way up the volcano while the Water Tribe warriors took out Fire Nation soldiers. The Fire Nation forces began to retreat as the eclipse drew nearer.
"The eclipse is only minutes away," Bato announced. "We should be able to make it up the hill by the time it starts and secure the entire palace by the time it's finished!"
"We can wait here, if you want," Katara told Dad.
"Yeah, we don't want you to strain yourself," I added.
"No, I won't. I want to press forward with the others," he said.
We proceed forward with the troops and followed them up the hill as the moon slowly crossed over the sun.
"The eclipse is starting! Put on your eclipse glasses!"
Everyone paused for only a few short seconds to place their glasses over their eyes before marching on. Katara, Dad, and I all watched as the moon covered the sun and slightly darkened the world around us.
"Surround the periphery!" Bato shouted once we made it to the city. "We have to secure the palace by the time the eclipse is over! Otherwise, we'll be in for the fight of our lives!"
Tailing the troops, Katara, Dad, and I just made it to the top of the volcano where we got a complete view of the city.
"There it is," said Dad. "The Fire Nation royal palace. We've come so far."
"It's not over yet," said Katara.
"We've got about eight minutes," I said. "So we should keep moving."
We continued onward, now following the troops as they marched down into the city, fighting off small groups of Fire Nation soldiers and capturing them as prisoners of war. Once the city was free of Fire Nation forces, we stopped in the middle of the city and waited as the eclipse came and gone.
"What should we do, Hakoda?" Bato asked. "Shouldn't something have happened by now?"
"I don't know," Dad admitted. "But now that the eclipse is over, I expect we're going to see some fire benders any minute."
Bato looked at Dad curiously before worriedly looking up at the sky. Following his gaze, we found that the Fire Nation had just launched some air balloons into the sky.
"My own invention," the Mechanist cried. "Oh, this is terrible."
Following the balloons were giant Fire Nation airships that were decorated with giant metal dragon heads on the front. Everyone stared in fear as the Fire Nation's air fleet soared towards us.
"They're back!" Katara pointed.
Emerging from the crescent sun was Appa as he carried Aang, Sokka, and Toph back to us.
"It was all a trap," Sokka exclaimed once Appa landed. "Azula knew we were coming, she's plotted out every move. We've just gotta get to the beach as fast as we can. If we can make it to the submarines, maybe we can get away safely."
Sokka and Toph both dismounted Appa as Katara, Dad, and I made our way towards them.
"They've airpower, but so do I!" Aang exclaimed before opening his glider. "I'm going to do what I can to slow them down."
Aang took off on his glider and Appa roared in restlessness.
"Appa, you and I can help, too," Katara said before mounting Appa and flying away with Aang.
"Everyone, let's get back to the subs!" Sokka exclaimed.
I quickly wrapped my arm around Dad and helped him walk as Sokka led the troops back to the shore. Everyone raced back up the volcano before having to run down the path we took earlier. The air fleet was on our tail the whole time, and once they caught up, their bottom hatches opened.
"Try and find some cover!" Sokka announced as Aang, Katara, and Appa came back. "I think we're about to see some bombs!"
We all huddled together as Toph gave us some cover with a large ledge of rock. Bombs rained down on us and threatened to take down our cover, but Toph was on it. When the bombs stopped, we came out from the cover and watched as the air fleet continued forward... toward the beach.
Oh, no...
"Why aren't they turning around to attack us again?" Katara asked.
"They're going towards the shore, where our submarines are," I said grimly.
"What? How're we gonna escape?" Sokka frowned.
"...We're not," said Dad.
"Then our only choice is to stand and fight," said Sokka. "We have the Avatar, we could still win..!"
"Yes, with the Avatar we could still win on another day. You kids have to leave," said Dad. "You have to escape on Appa together."
What're you saying?
"What? We can't leave you behind. We won't leave anyone behind," Katara argued.
"You're our only chance in the long run," Dad insisted. "You have to go with Aang somewhere safe. It's the only way to keep hope alive."
"The youngest of our group should go with you," said Bato. "The adults will stay behind and surrender. We'll be prisoners, but we'll all survive this battle."
"I've got some experience with the Fire Nation prisons," said Haru's father. "It's not going to be easy, but we'll get by."
"They're at the beach already!" Sokka exclaimed.
We all watched in horror as the airships dropped bomb after bomb onto our submarines, exploding and destroying them. It was then that we all decided. The youngest needed to leave, now.
"We lost today, but we've never been this close," Dad told me, Katara, and Sokka as all the other kids mounted Appa. "We tasted victory, and that counts for something."
"We'll miss you, Dad," said Katara.
"But we will see you again," I said, determinedly.
The three of us embraced our dad together.
"Bye, Dad," said Sokka. "We won't be apart for too long this time. I promise."
After we released, we mounted Appa together and waited for Aang to take off.
"Thank you all for being so brave and so strong," Aang said to all of the troops staying behind. "I'm going to make this up to you."
Aang took a seat at Appa's reins before Appa took off, leaving all of the troops behind.
I'm so sorry, Dad. We really tried...
"Aang, I think that airship might be following us," said Sokka.
Everyone turned to see one of the Fire Nation's metal airships as it slowly turned away from us, easing our worry.
"I know just the place for us to go where we'll be safe for a while," said Aang. "The Western Air Temple."

"This is it," Sokka said as we all walked through some bushes to see a large field scattered with koala sheep. "The official rendezvous point for the invasion force."
"How did you pick this place?" Toph asked.
"Before we split up, my dad and I found this island on a map," Sokka explained. "It's uninhabited, and the harbor surrounded by cliffs seemed like the perfect secluded place."
"Nice choice, Sokka," said Katara as we began to unpack our camp. "And we're here four days ahead of schedule."
"Yeah, kinda shows that you worried for nothing," I said.
"Wait, four days!" Aang exclaimed. "The invasion's in four days?"
"Whatever, that's like four days from now," Sokka yawned. "Let's just calm down and..."
Sokka passed out right on his sleeping bag.
"Sokka's got the right idea, Aang," said Katara. "We're here, we're ready. The best thing we can do now is get plenty of rest."
"...I guess," Aang shrugged.
Soon, everything went quiet as we all lied down and slowly drifted off to sleep... Well, I slowly tossed and turned for a bit, as usual, until I heard mumbling and then rustling. I sat up and looked behind me to see Aang kicking a bush.
Did I actually fall asleep? Is this a dream?
"Aang, what're you doing?" I asked.
"Training. The invasion's in four days, I've got to be ready," Aang explained without turning away from the bush.
"Aang, I think you are ready," I said. "You should sleep."
"Nah, I'm good."
I watched him kick the bush for a few more seconds before I lightly shrugged and lied back down to try and get some sleep.
[~][~][~]
The next morning, we all awoke to this loud thudding noise. As we arose from our sleeping bags, we saw Aang repeatedly punching a nearby tree. Tiredly, we all glanced at each other before Katara got up.
I can't believe he's still at it...
"Hey, how long have you been up?" Katara asked Aang.
"A couple hours," Aang responded without stopping. "I got a lot more skills to refine if I'm gonna fight Ozai."
"You know, there is such a thing as overtraining," said Katara.
Aang paused before hitting the tree one last time, which made him shiver and collapse. There was a small moment of silence before the tree lightly shook and lost all of its leaves.
"...You don't get it, do you?" Aang shot up. "My form is bad, I'm sloppy, and I still don't know any fire bending. Not even the basics."
Aang slightly twitched as Katara pushed his hand down.
"That's okay, Aang, the eclipse will block all fire bending anyway. You don't need to know any... Plus, it's a stupid element," Sokka said, matter-of-factly.
"Okay, well, I still have to work on everything else," said Aang. "I better spend the whole day training."
Aang quickly bowed to everyone before creating a ball of air and speeding away. We all looked at each other with worry.
"...He was up all night, you know," I said to Katara. "Before I went to sleep, I found him beating up a bush and explaining that he wasn't ready."
"But he is ready," said Katara.
"I know. I told him that, too," I explained. "I'm sure he's just nervous. Maybe we can talk to him when he gets back."
Katara nodded before heading back to the camp to make some breakfast.
[~][~][~]
Aang didn't come back until it was time to go to bed. Katara worried about him all day and I had to keep her from running after him. I explained to her that they could talk tomorrow and she reluctantly went to bed.
"Good night, Katara," Aang said after he lied down near the rest of us. "Good night, Sokka. Good night, Toph. Good night, Kailea. Good night, Appa. Good night, Momo. Good night, Appa and Mβ"
"Go to sleep, already!" Toph shouted.
There was no response. Everything was silent which allowed all of us to fall asleep, even me. I felt my eyelids slowly close as I drifted into a dreamless sleep.
[~][~][~]
"Ow!"
The sudden yell shocked me out of my sleep. I sat up on my sleep bag and looked around to see what was happening. Katara and Toph were both still on top of their sleeping bags, but Aang was over by Sokka's sleeping bag. Aang was crouched by Sokka's bag and Sokka was lying down with his sword in his hand while rubbing a large red bump on his head.
"Relax, it's still two days before the invasion," said Toph.
Is Aang still freaking out?
"Sokka, you've got to get up and drill your rock-climbing exercises," Aang cried as he pulled on Sokka's legs.
"What?"
"In one of my dreams, you were running from Fire Nation soldiers trying to climb this cliff but you were too slow and they got you," Aang explained.
"But that was just a dream, I'm a great climber," Sokka got up.
"Then climb that cliff, climb it fast!"
Aang pointed at a cliff we were close to and Sokka hesitantly began to climb it.
"Stupid Avatar, stupid cliff, stupid dream..." Sokka muttered.
While Sokka was climbing the cliff and Aang was watching him, us girls started to get ready for the day. Katara, Toph, and I all sat together and passed the water satchel around to share.
"Don't drink that!"
In shock, Toph spit the water out all over me and Katara.
"Why, is it poisoned?" Toph asked.
Katara and I both water bended the water off of us and threw it to the side.
"No, the water's fine," I told her.
"But in my dream, we were right in the middle of the invasion and you had to stop to use the bathroom," Aang described. "We died because of your tiny bladder. And you [Katara] need to start wearing your hair up. In my dream, your hair got caught in a train and..."
"Aang, I know you're just trying to help," Katara interrupted. "But you really need to get a grip. You're unraveling."
"...You're right. I'm losing my mind."
[~][~][~]
"It's like every time I think about how stressed I am, I just end up more stressed," Aang paced. "I'm like a big growing snowball of nerves."
"Of course you are," said Sokka. "That's 'cause you gotta fight the Fire Lord, the baddest man on the planet. And you better win, or we're all done for."
"Sokka!" I exclaimed.
"What? It's true, that's the deal, he knows it."
"That doesn't allow you to be insensitive about his situation," I smacked the back of his head.
"Ow! Why do you do this..?"
Aang jittered around in his stance as he whimpered in fear.
"You know what, I've got just the thing," said Katara. "Get ready to be de-stressified."
[~][~][~]
Earlier, Katara led Aang to a small hot spring that was surrounded by rocks to allow him to sweat his stress out. They came back a few minutes later and explained that Aang should try talking about his problems. Sokka set up his own little therapy space for Aang using koala sheep. Sokka acted as Aang's therapist for about ten minutes before coming back to us and saying that Aang needed something different. Toph offered some physical therapy which Aang ran away from. He came to me for help, but I didn't exactly have anything for him.
"You know, Aang, I've had some nightmares, too, these past couple of weeks," I explained. "And what I've learned is to... deal with them. Sure, it takes a while, but eventually, your mind will learn that it's only in your head."
"...So, you have nothing to help me? Nothing at all?" Aang asked desperately.
"Um..." I drawled. "Have you tried drinking tea?"
Aang sharply turned his head towards Katara, who shook her head.
"We're out of tea."
"Ugh!"
[~][~][~]
"Thanks for everything, guys," Aang said once the sun had set.
"So do you feel less stressed, ready for a good night's sleep?" Katara asked.
"Uh, I kind of think I sort of might slightly feel a little better... maybe," Aang smiled.
I guess that's better than nothing...
"Then our work here is done," Sokka yawned.
Katara, Toph, and I followed Sokka's lead as we all yawned and collapsed onto our sleeping bags for another sleep-filled night.
"...AAHH!"
"What happened, Aang?" we all ran over to his shaking form.
"It's the nightmares. They just get worse and worse," Aang explained.
"Looks like it's time for another therapy session," Sokka said as he put on his fake facial hair.
"No, that won't help," Aang frowned. "Nothing helps..! There's only one thing I can do. I'm going to stay awake straight through to the invasion."
[~][~][~]
That morning, Aang left to go train some more. Katara sent off to find him and returned saying that he still refused to sleep but began daydreaming. We all shared a worried glance before continuing on with our day. As the morning moved into the afternoon, Aang came back to camp just to train some more. He used his old noodle art of Fire Lord Ozai for target practice before stopping to talk to Momo. We all watched as the two chattered back to one another.
"Aang?" Katara interrupted them. "We're all starting to get a little worried about you."
"You've been awake too long," Sokka added.
"You're training too much," I said.
"And you're acting downright weird," said Toph.
"...Look, I appreciate what you guys are saying but the stress and the nightmares, they were just too much," Aang sighed. "Staying awake is the best way for me to deal with it."
Aang smiled before worriedly glancing in between Momo and Appa. He continued to look back and forth between the animals before running up to Sokka.
"Sokka, what should we do?"
"About what?"
"About that," Aang pointed to the docile animals.
Aang ran up to them and started to hurriedly glance around at his surroundings before running off, saying that he needed to jump into a waterfall.
"It's official," said Toph. "The kid's lost it."
"Guys, I have an idea," Katara smiled.
[~][~][~]
We were able to shave the koala sheep and make their pelts into a bed just in time for Aang to return to camp. He stared at the bed before laying his head on it.
"Oh, look, another hallucination," he said. "An imaginary bed made out of clouds."
"Hey! It's real," said Toph.
"It took us hours to get it ready," I said.
"We made it for you," Sokka added. "A good night's sleep will probably take the crazy away... We hope."
"Look," Aang said as he rolled on the bed. "You guys keep telling me I need to sleep, but I can't. The invasion's tomorrow."
"Aangβ"
"No, Katara, there's still so much I haven't learned. I don't need sleep, what I need is practice. Quick, hit me."
"...I'm not going to hit you."
"You want me to do it?" Toph asked.
"Only if it's with a pillow," I said.
"Listen to me," said Katara. "You've been training for this since the day we met. I've seen your progress. You're smart, brave, and strong enough."
"You really think so?" Aang asked.
"We all do," Sokka smiled. "You can do this, you're ready."
"You're the strongest person I know, Aang," I smiled. "I don't have any doubts."
"You're the man, Twinkle-toes," Toph pointed.
"Thanks guys," Aang yawned.
Katara led Aang onto the koala sheep bed.
"You know what?" said Aang. "I think I am ready."

Chapter 7- Blood-benders
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
A couple days passed since our encounter with Combustion Man at that small Fire Nation town. Currently, we found ourselves a nice cave by a large, beautiful field of red lilies. Tonight, since our recent days have been a bit boring, we thought of telling ghost stories to each other around our fire. It's been pretty fun so far, and Sokka is telling his stories now.
"Suddenly, they heard something down the hall, in the dark," Sokka said before making his own ominous noises. "It came into the torchlight. And they knew the blade of Wing-Fun was haunted!"
Sokka unsheathed his space sword and gave a shrill scream to add effect; it didn't work.
"I think I liked 'The Man with a Sword for a Hand' better," said Aang.
"Water Tribe slumber parties must stink," said Toph.
"Only if you invite Sokka," I stated.
"Wait, I've got one," said Katara. "And this is a true Southern Water Tribe story."
"Is this one of those 'a friend of my cousin knew some guy that this happened to' story?" Sokka rolled his eyes.
"No, it happened to Mom."
Sokka and I immediately became intrigued. Wondering about what could have happened to our own mother that we weren't told about but Katara somehow knew about.
"One winter, when Mom was a girl, a snowstorm buried the whole village for weeks. A month later, Mom realized she hadn't seen her friend Nini since the storm. So Mom and some others went to check on Nini's family. When they got there, no one was home. Just a fire flickering in the fireplace. While the men went out to search, Mom stayed in the house. When she was alone, she heard a voice. 'It's so cold, and I can't get warm.'"
Katara mimicked a young girl's voice which made Sokka slightly scoot back.
"Mom turned and saw Nini standing by the fire. She was blue, like she was frozen. Mom ran outside for help, but when everyone came back, Nini was gone."
"Where'd she go?" Sokka asked.
"No one knows. Nini's house stands empty to this day. But sometimes, people see smoke coming up from the chimney, like little Nini is still trying to get warm."
I felt a small chill run up my spin from the story.
"Wait. Guys, did you hear that?" Toph asked as she placed her hands on the ground. "I hear people under the mountain, and they're screaming."
Aang, Sokka, Katara, and I all came together in fear until Sokka let go.
"Nice try," he scoffed.
"No, I'm serious, I hear something," Toph insisted.
"You're probably just jumpy from the ghost stories," Katara suggested.
"...It just stopped."
"All right, now I'm getting scared," said Aang.
"Hello, children."
In fear and shock, we all stood up and embraced each other, now facing the owner of the sudden voice. From the forest, an old Fire Nation woman with long white hair emerged.
"Sorry to frighten you, my name is Hama," the woman smiled. "You children shouldn't be out in the forest by yourselves at night. I have an inn nearby, why don't you come back there for some spiced tea and warm beds?"
"...Yes, please."
The five of us followed Hama through the field of red lilies to a tiny Fire Nation town where her inn was. We all sat down at her dining room table and waited patiently as we were served tea.
"We really appreciate your invitation to let us stay for a night," I smiled at Hama.
"And you have a lovely inn," Katara added.
"Oh, aren't you two sweet?" Hama took a seat at the table. "You know, you should be careful. People have been disappearing in those woods you were camping in."
"What do you mean, 'disappearing'?" Sokka asked.
"When the moon turns full, people walk in and they don't come out... Who wants more tea?" Hama smiled.
I'm sorry... can I please have some more details than that?
We all stared at her worriedly.
"Don't worry, you'll all be completely safe here," Hama stated. "Why don't I show you to your rooms, and you can get a good night's rest?"
[~][~][~]
With each of us having our own cozy, soft, warm, bed to ourselves in Hama's inn, falling asleep was no problem, although, for me, it was staying asleep that was the problem. When the sun had just risen, I got dressed and went to leave my room when the door opened in front of me. On the other side were Hama and Katara.
"Oh. I see that both of you girls are quite the early birds," Hama smiled.
"We're going to head into town today and Hama needs our help," Katara explained. "Mind helping us wake everyone else up?"
"Not at all," I said.
[~][~][~]
Once everyone was dressed and ready to go, we headed into town together and helped Hama with her groceries. Katara and I helped Hama with deciding what was best for her money while everyone else was stuck carrying the goods. Just now, Hama paid a nice old man named Mr. Yao for some meat that we had bought.
"That Mr. Yao seems to have a thing for you," Katara smiled at Hama.
"Who knows? Maybe if we come back he'll give us some extra meat for free," I added.
"Ooh, we should ask for some Komodo sausages," said Katara.
"You girls would have me use my feminine charms to take advantage of that poor man?" Hama asked. "I think the three of us are going to get along swimmingly."
When Toph, Sokka, and Aang caught up to me, Katara, and Hama, Hama turned to all of us to say something.
"Why don't you all take those things back to the inn? I just have to run a couple more errands. I'll be back in a little while."
"This is a mysterious, little town you have here," said Sokka.
"Mysterious town for mysterious children," Hama said before walking away.
Without Hama, we all made our way back to her inn where we placed her groceries on the table.
"That Hama seems a little strange. Like she knows something or she's hiding something," said Sokka.
"That's ridiculous," said Katara. "She's a nice woman who took us in and gave us a place to stay."
"Besides, we've got our own secrets," I said. "We have ours, she has hers."
"You know, she kind of reminds me of Gran Gran," said Katara.
"But what did she mean by that comment 'mysterious children'?" Sokka asked.
"Did you not just hear me?" I crossed my arms.
"Gee, I don't know. Maybe because she found five strange kids camping in the woods at night?" Katara responded sarcastically. "Isn't that a little mysterious?"
"...I'm gonna take a look around," Sokka said before walking deeper into the inn.
"Wait, you're going to go through her things?" I asked.
"Sokka. Sokka, what are you doing?" Katara called as we all followed after him. "You can't just snoop around someone's house."
"It'll be fine," said Sokka.
"She could be home any minute," Aang added.
We watched as Sokka opened a few bedroom doors, glanced around, and closed them.
"Sokka, we are going to get in trouble and it'll be your fault," I frowned.
"And this is just plain rude," Katara added.
"I'm not finished yet," Sokka said before struggling to get a cabinet open.
When the cabinet finally budged open, many dolls dressed as old Fire Nation men came leaning out, shocking all of us.
"Okay, that's pretty creepy," said Aang.
"So, she's got a hobby," Katara shrugged as she closed the cabinet. "There's nothing weird about that."
"Sokka, you're still snooping?" I crossed my arms as Sokka made his way up to the attic.
"Just an ordinary, puppet-loving innkeeper, huh? Then why does she have a locked door up here?" Sokka asked as we caught up with him.
"Probably to keep people like you from snooping through her stuff," said Katara.
"We'll see," Sokka said as he looked through the door's keyhole. "It's empty except for a little chest."
"Maybe it's treasure," Toph gasped.
"Sokka, what are you doing?" Katara whispered.
Sokka unsheathed his sword and started to lockpick the keyhole.
"I can't believe you're breaking into someone's purposely locked room," I shook my head.
"I have to see what's in there," Sokka said before opening the door.
"...We shouldn't be doing this," Aang said as we approached the chest.
Sokka picked the small chest up and found it to be locked.
"Maybe there's a key here somewhere," Sokka glanced around.
"Oh, hand it over," Toph demanded.
Sokka handed the chest to Toph. Upon feeling the chest, Toph grabbed her meteor bracelet and turned it into a small key. Toph placed the key into the keyhole and wiggled it around.
"Come on, come on."
"This isn't as easy at it looks," said Toph.
"Guys, I don't know about this," said Aang.
"Seriously, I'm getting a really bad feeling," I admitted.
"This is crazy, I'm leaving," said Katara.
"Suit yourself. Do it, Toph," Sokka commanded.
Toph wiggled the key around a bit more before the chest finally clicked. In strong curiosity, we all surrounded the chest, trying to get it open.
"I'll tell you what's in the box."
We all exclaimed in surprise before turning to see Hama at the entrance of the room. We all bowed our heads as a form of apology as Sokka handed the chest to Hama. Hama opened the chest and slowly pulled out a blue and white comb.
"An old comb?" Sokka slouched.
"It's my greatest treasure," Hama smiled. "It's the last thing I owned from growing up in the Southern Water Tribe."
No way! She's apart of our tribe!
"You're from the Southern Water Tribe?" Katara asked.
"Just like you."
"How did you know?"
"I heard you talking around your campfire."
"But, why didn't you tell us?" Sokka asked.
"I wanted to surprise you," said Hama. "I bought all this food today so I could fix you a big, Water Tribe dinner. Of course, I can't get all the ingredients I need here, but ocean kumquats are a lot like sea prunes, if you stew them long enough."
"...Great."
"I knew I felt a bond with you right away," Katara smiled.
"And, strangely enough, same here," I nodded.
"And I knew you were keeping a secret, so I guess the three of us were right," Sokka smirked and got a punch in the arm. "But I'm sorry we were sneaking around."
"Apology accepted. Now let's get cooking."
[~][~][~]
"Who wants five-flavored soup?" Hama asked.
We all raised our hands and Hama bended the soup out of the pot, separated it into five equal sections, and placed the soup in our bowls.
No way!
"You're a water bender!" Katara and I exclaimed together.
"We've never met another water bender from our tribe," Katara explained to Hama.
"That's because the Fire Nation wiped them all out," Hama said sadly. "I was the last one."
"So how did you end up out here?" Sokka asked.
"...I was stolen from my home. It was over sixty years ago when the raids started. Each time, rounding up more of our water benders and taking them captive. We did our best to hold them off but our numbers dwindled as the raids continued. Finally, I, too, was captured. I was led away in chains. The last water bender of the Southern Water Tribe. They put us in terrible prisons here in the Fire Nation. I was the only one who managed to escape."
Katara and I both stood up to console Hama as she finished her story.
"How did you get away? And why did you stay in the Fire Nation?" Sokka asked.
"I'm sorry. It's too painful to talk about anymore," Hama shook her head.
"It's all right. We won't make you relive your past, you don't have to say anymore," I told her.
"We completely understand," said Katara. "We lost our mother in a raid."
"Oh, you poor things," said Hama.
"I can't tell you what it means to meet you," Katara smiled. "It's an honor, you're a hero."
"I never thought I'd meet another southern water bender, so meeting two is so special to me," Hama smiled at me and Katara. "I'd like to teach you what I know so you can carry on the southern tradition when I'm gone."
"...Yes!" Katara and I jumped.
"To learn of our heritage from someone from our tribe, it would mean everything to us," I said.
Katara and I bowed in front of Hama to show our gratitude to her and what she will teach us.
[~][~][~]
The next morning, Katara and I excitedly got ready before meeting with Hama after breakfast. We followed her outside and she led us back to the woods where she first found us.
"Growing up at the South Pole, water benders are totally at home surrounded by snow and ice and seas," Hama began. "But as you probably noticed on your travels, that isn't the case wherever you go."
"I know," Katara jumped. "When we were stranded in the desert I felt like there was almost nothing I could do."
"Me too, I've found myself in scenarios where water is completely unattainable," I shared.
"That's why you have to learn to control water wherever it exists," said Hama. "Did you know you can even pull water out of thin air?"
Hama stuck her arm out straight in front of her before waving it around her head and then stopping it in front of us. The tips of her fingers were now covered in water.
"You've got to keep an open mind... There's water in places you never think about."
Hama froze the water to make sharp cylinders around her fingers that she quickly shot at a tree.
Whoa...
[~][~][~]
"Wow, these flowers are beautiful," Katara smiled as we followed Hama through the field of red lilies.
"They're called Fire Lilies," said Hama. "They only bloom a few weeks a year."
"Then, I guess we're pretty lucky that we get to see them right now," I said.
"I'd say so," said Hama. "They're one of my favorite things about living here. And like all plants, and all living things, they're filled with water."
"I met a water bender who lived in a swamp and could control the vines by bending the water inside," Katara explained.
Okay, you've got to start filling me in on your adventures that you had before I arrived.
"You can take it even further," Hama smiled mischievously.
Hama did a full spin as she bended the water out of the Fire Lilies and used it to slice a nearby standing rock into five pieces.
"That was incredible," Katara exclaimed.
I smiled at Hama before glancing beside me to see the large patch of dead, gray Fire Lilies.
"But it's a shame about the lilies," I said.
"They're just flowers," Hama shrugged. "When you're a water bender in a strange land, you do what you must to survive. Tonight, I'll teach you both the ultimate technique of water bending. It can only be done during the full moon when your bending is at its peak."
The full moon...
Katara and I shared a wary look.
"What about all those people that disappeared during the full moon? Isn't it a bit dangerous to be outside?" I asked.
"Oh, Kailea, three master water benders beneath a full moon? I don't think we have anything to worry about," Hama said before leading the way, deeper into the woods.
We walked until it was dark and the full moon was lighting the path ahead of us.
"Can you feel the power the full moon brings?" Hama asked. "...For generations, it has blessed water benders with its glow. Allowing us to do incredible things... I've never felt more alive."
Hama stretched her arms out beside her, staring up at the moon.
"What I'm about to show you, I discovered in that wretched Fire Nation prison. The guards were always careful to keep any water away from us. They piped in dry air and had us suspended away from the ground. Before giving us any water, they would bind our hands and feet so we couldn't bend. Any sign of trouble was met with cruel retribution. And yet, each month, I felt the full moon enriching me with its energy. There had to be something I could do to escape. Then I realized that where there is life, there is water. The rats that scurried across the floor of my cage were nothing more than skins filled with liquid. And I passed years developing the skills that would lead to my escape. Blood bending..."
What..?
I looked at Katara and she seemed to have the same fearful and scared curiosity in her eyes as I did. I slowly started to inch my way in front of her.
"Controlling the water in another body. Enforcing your own will over theirs. Once I had mastered the rats, I was ready for the men. And during the next full moon, I walked free for the first time in decades. My cell unlocked by the very guards assigned to keep me in. Once you perfect this technique, you can control anything. Or anyone."
"But to reach inside someone and control them?" Katara asked.
"To take their own will away from them? I don't think that's something we'd like to learn. Not a power we'd like to possess," I said, now standing in front of Katara.
"The choice is not yours. The power exists," Hama growled. "And it's your duty to use the gifts you've been given to win this war. Kailea, Katara, they tried to wipe us out, our entire culture, your mother."
"...We know."
"Then you should understand what I'm talking about. We're the last water benders of the Southern Tribe. We have to fight these people whenever we can. Wherever they are, with any means necessary."
We're fighting the Fire Lord and his army, not innocent people of the Fire Nation. They may be under his rule... but they've done nothing to hurt us...
"It's you," said Katara. "You're the one who's making people disappear during the full moons."
"They threw me in prison to rot along with my brothers and sisters. They deserve the same. You two must carry on my work."
"We won't. We won't use blood bending," Katara refused.
"And we won't stand by as you continue to terrorize this town," I pointed at Hama.
Suddenly, my arm began to twist around and move out of my control. I watched in pain and shock as Hama used her bending to contort my arm and use it against me.
"Kailea!"
"You should have learned the technique before you turned against me."
Katara went to charge at Hama, but she used her blood bending to take control of Katara's legs and trip her before she made it. Katara groaned in pain as her legs were forced to be straight and unmoving. I wanted to call out to her but Hama turned her focus to me and completely took control of my body to keep me still.
"It's impossible to fight your way out of my grip. I control every muscle, every vein in your body."
My body began to swing and dip at the movements of Hama's arms. All my nerves burned from the sensation of losing my own will. My whole body felt as if it was fighting against me.
"Stop, please..." Katara begged.
Hama ignored her while she evilly smiled at my submissive form.
"...You're not the only one who draws power from the moon," Katara stood up. "My bending is more powerful than yours, Hama."
I watched as Katara brought up water from the grass below us and fought Hama. My body fell to the ground and slowly grew warm as my mind took back its previous control.
"We know what you've been doing, Hama," Sokka and Aang came running up to us.
"Give up, you're outnumbered," Aang ordered.
"No. You've outnumbered yourselves," Hama said before raising her hands.
Behind her, Sokka and Aang became stiff as their limbs stuck to their bodies.
She's controlling them...
The two came sliding towards us. Katara and I both dodged before grabbing some water from out of the plants around us and bending it all at Hama. She created her own shield to block the attacks.
"Guys, look out!" Sokka called.
Katara and I turned around to see Sokka unsheathing his sword and swinging it at us.
"It's like my brain has a mind of its own! Stop it, arm, stop it!"
"This feels weird!" Aang cried.
"Katara, fight Hama, I'll fend off the boys," I told her.
"Right!" Katara nodded before taking off for Hama.
"I'm so sorry about this!" Sokka cried as he continued to swing his sword at me.
I quickly brought up some water from the grass and used it to lead and push the boys away from me. When Aang got close, I used my bending to push him back and freeze him to a tree, but as I fought him I forgot about Sokka.
"Kailea!"
I spun around to see that Sokka was about to slice me. Without any more water in my grasp, I put my hands in front of me and held them in place. I felt some kind of strength within me grow as Sokka stopped moving. I felt as if I was bending but there wasn't any water around me. I slowly brought my hands down and watched as Sokka was brought to his knees.
"What's happening?" Sokka cried.
I... I'm blood bending... my own brother..?
I released my hold on him and Sokka was able to stand up. I looked down at my hands, holding back regretful tears.
"You took him from my grasp, Kailea," I heard Hama smile after she was able to knock Katara down. "But you forgot about your friend..!"
Suddenly, Aang freed himself from the ice as Sokka grabbed his sword. Sokka pointed his sword in front of him as Aang came sliding to him.
"No!"
The boys suddenly stopped in their tracks, now able to control their own bodies. The whole forest was silent until Hama let out her own forced grunts as she was brought to the ground. I look around and saw Katara with her hands and arms raised as she blood bended Hama. While under control, Toph came running to us with a large group of Fire Nation villagers. They surrounded Hama and cuffed her, making sure that she couldn't water bend.
"You're going to be locked away forever."
As the villagers started to lead Hama away, I walked over to Katara and wrapped an arm around her while Sokka, Aang, and Toph stood by us.
"My work is done," Hama said before turning to us. "Congratulations, girls. You're blood benders."
Hama laughed as Katara brought a hand to her mouth. Katara fell to her knees as she lightly sobbed. I kept in my own tears as I kneeled beside her and embraced her tightly.

Kailea |~|
Once we figured we were far away enough from that psycho metal man, we settled just outside of a small Fire Nation town. Aang went on a spiritual journey yesterday, and learned of Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin's past together. By the end of it, we were all holding hands, thinking about how Aang explained how friendships can last a lifetime. But today, things have already gotten a little heated. As Aang was training today, Katara and Toph got into a fight.
"I can't believe her! It wouldn't kill her to just apologize for once..!" Katara exclaimed as Aang, Sokka, and Toph ran into town.
I shrugged, "Everyone's got their quirks."
"What, are you taking her side then?" Katara yelled.
"Uh, no, calm down," I stepped back from her. "I'm just explaining that everyone's different. You're more responsible than she is and she's more laid back than you are. Both of those things are can be good or bad in certain scenarios."
Katara sighed, "I guess you're right."
"Now, come on, we've got some responsibilities to attend to," I said.
Together, Katara and I completely made camp and started on lunch. We were almost done by the time Sokka, Aang, and Toph made it back. Each of them was carrying a large basket of goods, and laughing.
"Where did you guys get all the money to buy this stuff?" Katara asked after they tossed the baskets at us.
"Toph got us money," Aang smiled. "She scammed one of those guys in town who moves the shells around all sneaky-like."
"She used earth bending to win the game," Sokka added. "Classic."
"Ah, so she cheated," said Katara.
"Hey, I only cheated because he was cheating," Toph defended. "I cheated a cheater. What's wrong with that?"
"Besides, Katara," I said as I examined the baskets. "They only bought food. They didn't go on a shopping spree, buying things they didn't need. We were running a bit low on food anyway."
"I'm just saying, this isn't something we should make a habit of doing," Katara frowned.
"Why? Because it's fun and you hate fun?" Toph asked.
"I don't hate fun," Katara said before putting Momo on her head. "See? Fun."
"...Katara, I'll personally make you an Avatar promise that we won't make a habit of doing these scams," Aang bowed after uncovering his arrow.
[~][~][~]
I should've known that they were going to continue the scams...
Day after day, Sokka, Toph, and Aang would return to me and Katara with even more items and bags of money. It was starting to seem unhealthy.
"Guys, I think these scams have gone far enough," said Katara. "If you keep doing them, something bad is gonna happen."
"Could you for once stop being such a sourpuss and just lighten up?" Toph said in exasperation.
"Oh, I'm sorry. You think I should be more like you?" Katara glared. "Like some wild child?"
"Yeah, maybe," Toph smiled. "Maybe then, you'd see how great we have it. I mean, look at us. We're traveling around the world, making easy money, having fun, with no parents to tell us what to do."
"Ah, I see. You're acting like this because of your parents," said Katara.
"Whatever."
"They were controlling over you, so you ran away, and now you act like your parents don't exist. You act like you hate them, but you don't. You just feel guilty."
"I do hate them..."
"I don't think so. I think you miss them, but you just don't want to deal with that, so instead, you act like this crazy person."
"Look, I ran away to help Aang," Toph stood in front of Katara.
"You know what? It doesn't matter," said Katara. "These scams put us all at risk and we don't need that. We've already got some third-eyed freak after us."
"Speaking of that third-eyed freak," said Sokka. "I think I've come up with a name for him. What do you think of 'Sparky-Sparky Boom Man'?"
"...I love it," I smiled.
"...We have enough money. You need to stop this," Katara told Toph.
"I'll stop when I wanna stop, and not when you tell me," Toph stomped before marching away with a bag of money.
"Speaking of money," said Sokka. "I'm off to spend some. See you guys later."
Sokka grabbed his own bag of money and started to walk into town.
"Uh oh, Sokka has money? We're going broke already," I shook my head.
"I heard that!"
[~][~][~]
Sokka returned soon with a messenger hawk while Katara and Aang were practicing their water bending and Toph and I were hanging around our camp.
"Toph, when I was in town, I found something that you're not gonna like," Sokka said as he unraveled a wanted poster of Toph.
"Well, it sounds like a sheet of paper," said Toph. "But I guess you're referring to what's on the sheet of paper."
"It's your wanted poster," I told her.
"They've nicknamed you 'The Runaway'," Sokka added.
"A wanted poster. That's so great," Toph lit up. "The Runaway... I love my new nickname. Is there a picture of me? Does it look good?"
Sokka looked in between Toph and the evil drawing of her on the poster.
"Well, yeah, actually, it does look pretty good," said Sokka.
I facepalmed, knowing that he was being serious.
"But Toph, you're missing the point," Sokka continued. "Maybe Katara was right. These scams are drawing too much attention to us."
"Don't be such a worrywart like your sister," said Toph. "Think of it this way. Now you have plenty of money to help with the invasion plan."
"Well, that is true," Sokka smiled. "I had this idea of making armor for Appa."
"Here's a little extra so you can get yourself a nice map of the Fire Nation," Toph held some coins out for Sokka. "You know what? Make it an atlas."
"I do like expensive atlases," Sokka smiled as he took the rest of Toph's money.
"Of course you do, and that's why this wanted poster is going to stay our little secret," said Toph. "Right, Kailea?"
"Look, Sokka may be easily influenced by bribes, but I'm not," I said. "Toph, people will be after you if you head into town and if you defend yourself with earth bending, they'll know what's up."
"I can handle myself, all right?" Toph walked off.
"Sokka, tell me you didn't buy a bird," Katara sighed as she and Aang made it back to camp.
"Not just a bird. A messenger bird," Sokka corrected. "Now we can send messages all over the world, even to Gran Gran."
"Wow. How does it work?" Aang asked.
"Hm, uh, I never actually thought about that. Hawky, Gran Gran, South Pole," Sokka pointed and Hawky shook his head. "I think he gets it."
Suddenly, Momo appeared on Aang's shoulder, hissed at Hawky, and the two started to fight.
"Hawky, make nice. Bad Hawky!"
[~][~][~]
It was just after lunch and Sokka and Toph came walking back to camp.
"Well, look who decided to join us," Katara crossed her arms. "Where have you two been? Off scamming again?"
"Yes, we were," said Toph.
"And I suppose you don't think what you're doing is dangerous at all?" Katara asked.
"No, I don't."
"Really?"
"Yes, really."
"Well, then. What's this?" Katara asked as she held Toph's wanted poster in front of her.
"I don't know..! I mean, seriously, what's with you people?" Toph exclaimed. "I'm blind!"
"It's a wanted poster of you. The Runaway," said Katara. "Is that what you're called now? Are you proud of this?"
"Where did you get that?" Toph asked.
"It doesn't matter where I got it. The fact isβ"
"You went through my stuff!" Toph accused. "You had no right."
"Your stuff was messy, and I was just straightening up and I happened to stumble across it," Katara explained.
"That's a lie. You're lying, Katara," Toph pointed.
"Fine, it's a lie, but you've been so out of control lately I knew something was up..! I knew you were hiding something, and you were."
Toph hit the poster out of Katara's hand and marched away.
"Don't you walk away from me while I'm talking to you."
"Oh, really, Mom? Or what are you going to do? Send me to my room?"
"I wish I could," said Katara.
"Well, you can't," Toph snapped. "Because you're not my mom and you're not their mom."
Toph motioned to me, Aang, and Sokka all watching from the sidelines.
"I never said I was."
"No, but you certainly act like it. You think it's your job to boss everyone around, but it's not. You're just a regular kid like the rest of us, so stop acting like you can tell me what to do. I can do whatever I want."
"...I don't act that way," Katara stated. "Sokka, do I act motherly?"
"Hey, I'm staying out of this one," said Sokka.
"Kailea?" Katara turned to me.
"What he said," I pointed at Sokka.
"What do you think, Aang? Do I act like a mom?"
"Well, Iβ"
"Stop rubbing your eye and speak clearly when you talk," Katara demanded.
"Yes, ma'am."
"I can't be around you right now," Toph stomped away.
"Well, I can't be around you," Katara called before stomping the other direction.
Sokka's bird squawked.
"I know, Hawky. Why can't they just get along?" Sokka sighed.
[~][~][~]
The sun had started to set and the two girls still haven't even glanced at each other.
"Hey, guys, you want to test out my messenger hawk with me?" Sokka asked me and Aang. "I've got an idea."
"Sure."
"Why not?"
"I'm gonna send a note to Katara and say it's from Toph, who wants to apologize. Then everyone will be friends again."
Hold on a sec...
"I got to say, Sokka, you continue to impress me with your ideas," Aang smiled.
"Eh, it's a gift," Sokka said before quickly writing a letter and giving it to Hawky.
"Um, Sokka. Toph can't read, right?" I asked.
"Yeah, and?" Sokka asked before sending Hawky to Katara.
"So..."
"I know this is from you, Sokka! Toph can't write," Katara shouted. "Ugh, you're all driving me crazy!"
"I can't believe Toph can't write," said Aang.
"Yep, we're idiots," said Sokka.
"Speak for yourselves," I sighed.
"I guess Plan B is, we send a note to Toph pretending it's from Katara," Aang smiled.
"Aang, we just established that Toph can also not read," I said.
"Oh, right," Aang slouched.
"Hold on, I've got another plan," Sokka said before walking up to Toph and walking away with her.
[~][~][~]
When Toph and Sokka came back, Katara had already been here at camp waiting for them. As soon as we saw them, Katara walked up to Toph.
"Hi, Toph, um, I want toβ"
"Katara, stop, you don't need to apologize. I was the one being stupid. These scams are out of control, and I'm done with them."
"What did you do?" I smiled as Sokka walked up to me and Aang.
"Oh, we just had a little talk," Sokka shrugged.
"Actually, I wasn't going to apologize," said Katara. "I was gonna say, I wanna pull a scam with you."
Uh oh...
"What? You wanna pull a scam?" Toph placed her hands on her hips.
"Not just any scam," Katara smirked. "The ultimate scam. What do you say, Toph? Just me and you. One last go. You in?"
The boys fainted while I just shook my head.
"You know I'm in. Now, what's this idea of yours?" Toph and Katara walked off.
[~][~][~]
The next day, Katara and Toph ran into town together to do their little scam. They left in the morning and have been gone since. It was just barely before lunchtime and Aang was starting to pace in worry.
"Do you think this scam of theirs should be taking this long?" he asked me and Sokka.
"No, and it's worrying me, too," I said.
"Same here," said Sokka. "We'd better check it out."
Sokka placed Hawky on a basket next to Momo.
"You two behave. Appa's in charge."
Together, the three of us walked into town to find that no one was there. It was kind of strange because it also meant that Katara and Toph weren't there.
"Where do you think they might be?" Sokka asked.
"'They' as in Katara and Toph or 'they' as in everyone?" I asked.
"Both," said Aang. "...Guys, watch out!"
Aang grabbed both mine and Sokka's hand and dragged us into cover as an explosion erupted where we once stood.
"It's Sparky-Sparky Boom Man," said Aang.
"You know, I'm starting to think that name doesn't quite fit," Sokka rubbed his head as Sparky-Sparky Boom Man jumped from the top of a building and fired at us again.
We ran away from the blast with the man on our tail. As we ran down an alleyway, Sparky-Sparky Boom Man fired at us again, sending us forward a bit. Sokka lifted off the ground and landed in a wheelbarrow which made it stand up. Aang and I rushed to pick Sokka up and used the wheelbarrow for cover.
"This guy is too good," said Sokka. "He shoots fire from his brain."
"We should split up. He can't chase us both," Aang suggested.
"That's the problem, Aang. He's clearly after you," I said. "If anythingβ"
I was interrupted by Sparky-Sparky Boom Man's metal leg clanking against the ground as he walked towards us. Aang quickly ran in one direction while Sokka grabbed my arm and dragged me the other way. As I suspected, Sparky-Sparky Boom Man followed Aang and fired a blast at him.
"Kailea! Sokka!"
Sokka and I turned together to see Katara and Toph running towards us.
"Aang's in trouble," Sokka explained.
"Yeah, we know, come on!" said Katara.
With Sokka leading, the four of us ran to the center of town where Sparky-Sparky Boom Man stood over a collapsed Aang. Quickly, I bended a stream from my waterskin and froze Sparky-Sparky Boom Man's head.
"Aang, get up," Katara rushed over to him.
"Let's get out of here," said Toph.
Together, we all ran from the man with the third eye. Toph, who was tailing the group, fired a large rock at him which exploded from one of his blasts. When the dust cleared, we found that Sparky-Sparky Boom Man stoppedΒ following us.
"Hey, I've got it. The perfect name for that guy," said Sokka. "Combustion Man."
"Good job, Sokka," Toph dismissed him. "Now let's get out of here before Combustion Man catches us."
"See? It fits so well."
[~][~][~]
Once we made it back to camp, we quickly packed up and flew far away from the Fire Nation town so that no one could follow us.
"Well, I'm exhausted," Sokka yawned. "Hawky, how 'bout you, buddy? Yeah, you're such a lazy little bird."
Sokka, Aang, and I all hopped off of Appa, trying to set up a quick camp so that we could go to bed, when Katara and Toph hopped off a bit later and stole Hawky. I smiled as I watched the girls place a letter in Hawky's dispatch tube and send him off to deliver it.
"Hey, where'd Hawky go?"

Zuko [~]
"I'm so excited to spend the weekend on Ember Island. It's gonna be great to hang out on the beach and do nothing," Ty Lee smiled.
"Doing nothing is a waste of time," I snapped. "We're being sent on a forced vacation. I feel like a child."
"Lighten up. So Dad wants to meet with his advisors alone, without anyone else around. Don't take it personally," said Azula.
"Doesn't your family have a house on Ember Island?" Ty Lee asked.
"We used to come every summer when we were kids," Azula explained.
Back when Mom was still around.
"That must've been fun," said Ty Lee.
"That was a long time ago," I said.
[~][~][~]
When we finally arrived at the docks of Ember Island, Li and Lo greeted us in hideous pink Fire Nation robes.
"Welcome to Ember Island, kids."
We looked past Li and Lo to see where we were staying, which was in a tiny beach cottage that was mounted onto some rocks. They led us inside the shabby cottage and it was even worse than I had imagined. Everything was so pink, it was like Ty Lee threw up in here.
"It smells like old lady in here," I whispered to Mai.
"Gee, I wonder why," she responded.
"...Who are these two beautiful women?" Ty Lee asked as she pointed to a painted picture of two young women in bathing suits.
"Can't you tell? It's Lo and Li."
...I'm gonna puke.
To avoid any other surprises such as that one, we led our own way into the room where we were going to be staying, with Li and Lo behind us. Immediately, Ty Lee hopped onto one of the beds.
I wouldn't have done that if I were you...
"Ooh, I love the seashell bedspread," Ty Lee smiled.
"Are you serious? It looks like the beach threw up all over it," Mai frowned.
"We know you're upset that you were forced to come here this weekend," said Li.
"But Ember Island is a magical place. Keep an open mind," said Lo.
"Give it a chance. And it can help you understand yourselves and each other."
Lo picked up a small rock from the table beside her.
"The beach has a special way..."
"Of smoothing even the most ragged edges," Li finished.
"Time to hit the beach," the two clapped before undressing their robes to show their bathing suits.
Mai tried to cover my eyes, but it was too late.

After Sokka's swordsmanship lessons with Master Piandao, he decided that there was a small about of free time in the schedule that we could use to have a good time. Luckily enough, we found a small crater that was filled with cold water. We all decided that it was time for a swim day.
"Aang, I know swimming is fun and all, but do you really think you should be exposing yourself like that?" Toph asked, referring to Aang's arrows. "Cover up."
"What? I'm wearing trunks," Aang smiled.
"I know, it's your tattoos I'm worried about," Toph explained. "What if someone sees you?"
"There are walls all around us," Katara dismissed Toph's worry. "It's completely safe."
"Yeah, but knowing our luck with Aang, I still feel like someone will see him," I said.
"Quit fretting," Sokka exclaimed. "You should be enjoying this time I made for you in my schedule."
"Yes. Oh, thank you, Sokka, Lord of Scheduled Time," I teasingly bowed.
Sokka gave me a bored and slightly annoyed glare.
[~][~][~]
"Guys, you're all gonna think I'm crazy," Toph woke us all up from our sleep. "But it feels like a metal man is coming."
We all glanced around and collectively landed on a reflection of light that was coming from the top of the crater. The reflection was of the moon, and it bounced off of a man's metal arm. The man stood, watching us. We all slowly got ready to attack until the man shot something out of his third-eye at us that caused an explosion.
Toph tried to earth bend at him, but he easily blasted it away. Aang made an air shield to block the blast which allowed both me and Katara to bring up two different waves of water at him. He blasted both away at the same time and caused a large amount of smoke between us.
Who is this guy?!
Knowing that he could blow up all of our attacks, we ducked together under a large rock as the metal man continued to cause explosions around us.
"This is crazy!" Sokka exclaimed. "How can we beat a guy who blows things up with his mind?"
"We can't. Jump on Appa. I'll try to distract him," Aang said before taking off.
We watched as Aang ran up the edge of the crater and led the metal man away from us. We quickly climbed onto Appa and chased after Aang. From above, we watched as Aang hid from the metal man's explosions until the man lost sight of Aang.
Suddenly, a body made of rock shot into the air, and the rocks fell from it to reveal Aang. Just in time, we flew Appa under Aang's flying body in order to catch him. Katara embraced Aang once he was on Appa's saddle.
"I'm okay," Aang sighed.
"Well, that was random," said Toph.
"I don't think so," said Katara. "I get the feeling he knows who we are."

Once we were changed into our bathing suits, and away from Lo and Li, we headed for the beach. Mai and I walked together with an umbrella, making sure that neither one of us had to deal with the sun. We chose a spot together and sat down on a towel, with the umbrella still giving us shade.
I hate this place...
Bored, I glanced around, looking for something to take my attention away from running kids and loud teenagers. To my left, I saw a medium white conch shell...
That afternoon, Uncle had me and her join him in collecting seashells on the beach just outside of the spa. I grumbled at the thought of having to do anything so stupid while she gladly joined him, always happy to help.
"Do girls actually like this stuff?" I asked.
"Depends on the girl," she smiled. "I think they're really pretty."
She picked up a medium white conch shell and held it up to me.
"Do you not think so?"
Yeah, I guess it is pretty...
I picked up the shell and tried handing it to Mai.
"Here..." I smiled. "This is for you."
"Why would I want that?" Mai stated stoically.
"I saw it and I thought it was pretty," I told her. "Don't girls like stuff like this?"
"Maybe stupid girls," Mai scoffed.
...She's not stupid.
"Forget it!" I yelled as I threw the shell away.
Why..? Ever since I've come back home I can't stop thinking about what I've done to her and Uncle. Uncle's family but her... I have a girlfriend now, but I can't get her out of my mind...
I sighed to myself before getting up for a walk. On my walk, I spotted a place that sold ice cream and thought that it would be a good idea to get me and Mai some since, you know, we're on a beach and beaches are hot. I ordered two cones and made my way back to Mai as she sat under the umbrella, alone.
"I thought since it was so hot..." I said as I sat down under the umbrella and handed Mai the cone. "Here."
I edged the cone closer so that Mai could grab it but the ice cream on top of the cone fell onto the bottoms of her bathing suit.
"Thanks," she sighed. "This is really refreshing."
"...Hey, beach bums, we're playing next," Azula said to all of us.
We all turned to see that she was talking about beach volleyball that a bunch of other teens were playing. Together, we made our way over to Azula as she walked over to one side of the net.
"See that girl with the silly pigtails?" Azula asked us. "When she runs towards the ball there's just the slightest hesitation of her left foot. I'm willing to bet a childhood injury has weakened her. Keep serving the ball to her left and we'll destroy her and the rest of her team. Dismissed."
Ugh... this is a waste of time. But if I didn't do it, I'm sure Azula would still make me, somehow.
It was our serve first. Azula threw the ball into the air and kicked it to the other team. The ball flew past all of them without any of them being able to stop it. That's already one point for us. When they served next, I ran to where the ball was going to land and kicked it back up into the air. To follow up, Azula smacked the ball over the net to the girl with the pigtails.
She dove to save the ball but didn't make it. The game continued, Ty Lee kicked the ball to the other team and landed on top of the net. The opposing team was able to return the ball, but Mai was able to knee the ball back over. The other team returned the ball one more time before I helped Azula jump into the air. She kicked the ball to the other team for the winning point, as she set the net on fire.
"Yes. We defeated you for all time. You will never rise from the ashes of your shame and humiliation..!" Azula told the other team.
...It was just a game.
"Well, that was fun," Azula calmed down.
"I'm having a party tonight," two teens approached Ty Lee. "You should come by."
"Sure. I love parties," Ty Lee smiled.
"Your friend can come, too," the other teen smiled, talking about Mai.
"Uh, what about me and my brother?" Azula asked the teens. "Aren't you going to invite us? You don't know who we are, do you?"
"Don't you know who we are?" the first teen raised an eyebrow. "We're Chan and Ruon-Jian."
"Yeah."
Maybe I should tell you who we are..!
I charged up to the two but Azula stopped me before I could reach them.
"But fine, you're invited," said Chan. "Just so you know, though, some of the most important teenagers in the Fire Nation are gonna be at this party so... Try and act normal."
"We'll do our best," Azula smirked.
[~][~][~]
"Why didn't you tell those guys who we are?" I asked Azula as we sat around a table eating dinner.
"I guess I was intrigued," she explained. "I'm so used to people worshipping us."
"They should," said Ty Lee.
"Yes, I know, and I love it," said Azula. "But for once, I just wanted to see how people would treat us if they didn't know who we were."
"Like waves washing away the footprints on the sand, Ember Island gives everyone a clean slate," said Li.
"Ember Island reveals the true you," Lo added.
The twins stood up together, clapped a few times, and exclaimed, "To the party!"
[~][~][~]
As soon as the sun was on the horizon, Azula made us walk to Chan's beach house, claiming that we needed to be on time.
If it was my choice, I never would have come. These guys have already gotten on my nerves.
"Um... you're a little early. No one's here yet," Chan answered the door.
"I heard you telling someone you'd be partying from dusk till dawn," Azula explained. "It's dusk so we're here."
"But that's just an expression," Chan frowned.
"We are the perfect party guests. We arrive right on time because we are very punctual."
Chan shrugged before motioning us through the door. His beach house was completely decorated with Fire Nation decor and there was a long table covered with food.
"All right, listen, my dad's an admiral," Chan began. "He has no idea I'm having this party, so don't mess anything up."
"...That's a sharp outfit, Chan... careful," said Azula. "You could puncture the hull of an Empire-Class Fire Nation battleship leaving thousands to drown at sea... because it's so sharp."
What was that..?
"Um... thanks," Chan said before leading us further into the house.
"Hey, first ones here, huh?" Ruon-Jian asked as he leaned against a table.
I really don't like that guy...
"He thinks he's so great..." I clicked my tongue and turned to Mai. "Well, what do you think of him?"
"I don't have any opinion about him. I hardly know him," Mai shrugged.
"...You like him, don't you?"
Mai sighed in irritation before walking ahead of me.
[~][~][~]
It wasn't long until Chan's beach house was filled with a bunch of loud, partying teenagers. To get away from them all, Mai and I sat together on a bench near the front of the house.
"I'm bored," Mai sighed.
"I know," I told her.
"I'm hungry."
"So what?"
"So find me some food," she ordered.
"Sure," I said before getting up and walking over to the table of food.
Why do I have to serve her? If she's hungry, she should get her own food... I wished she'd be a little more independent sometimes...
I went to face the last soldier but she stood in front of me.
"You can't have all the fun," she smirked at me as the soldier came charging with his spear.
Before the soldier reached her, she bended a stream out of her waterskin and used it to wrap around the spear and yank it away.
Why can't she act on her own like that..?
After filling up a plate of food for Mai, I went to give it to her, but on my walk back to her, some guy hit my arm, making me drop the plate. The food spilled on the floor, making it so that you couldn't eat it.
"Hey, watch it!" I yelled at the guy. "That food was for my cranky girlfriend!"
I pointed to where Mai was sitting and the guy looked over and rose an eyebrow. I followed his eyes to see that Ruon guy from earlier leaning on the wall and flirting with her. Feeling my blood boil, I ran over to Ruon-Jian and tossed him away as I took his place.
"What're you doing?" he asked.
"Stop talking to my girlfriend..!" I told him.
"Relax, it's just a party," he approached me.
That doesn't matter!
When he got close enough, I easily pushed him back and made him fly into a vase, breaking it.
"Zuko, what is wrong with you?" Mai spun me around.
"What's wrong with me?" I asked.
"Your temper's out of control," she pointed. "You blow up over every little thing. You're so impatient and hot-headed and angry."
"Well, at least I feel something," I said. "As opposed to you. You have no passion for anything. You're just a big blah!"
Mai turned away from me, "It's over, Zuko. We're done."
"...Who broke my Nana's vase?" Chan shouted before his friend pointed at me. "That's it. You're out of here."
"I was just leaving," I turned towards the door.
"Have fun by yourself, Loser Boy," Ruon-Jian taunted.
"Nice," said Chan.
On my way out, I slammed the door. Not wanting to go back to the elderly twins or hang around any other annoying people, I figured out the perfect place to go; our old family beach home. If I remember correctly, it was far away from other beach homes and was just around this large rock corner.
I looked around the familiar setting, remembering when Azula and I would run around together, and when Uncle was here with cousin Lu Ten. I made it to the house's front doors. They were locked so I just kicked them open and I was greeted by a family photo we had from when I was just a kid. I looked over to Mom and remembered when we made a concrete handprint of my hand when I was younger. I found the piece of cement and put my own hand over it.
Everyone's who ever truly cared for me... they're...
"Try to calm down."
I can't keep her voice out of my head.
"Now come on, let's go do something fun..!"
The way she smiled at me... The look in her eyes, how they always showed acceptance to who I am...
"I think you're doing great."
"...your hair... it looks nice."
She was always there. Even when she had a chance to leave, she didn't.
"No. You seem happy..."
I was happy. She made me happy.
"I like you too..!"
"You told me you changed!"
...I have changed. You've changed me. Kailea, I'm so sorry...
"I thought I'd find you here," Azula walked up to me while I sat on the porch of our old beach home.
"Those summers we spent here seem so long ago," I told her. "So much has changed."
"Come down to the beach me," Azula ordered. "Come on, this place is depressing."
I placed my concrete handprint down and followed Azula back to the beach. There, Ty Lee and Mai were waiting for us.
"Hey..." Mai said as I walked past her.
I ignored her.
"...I'm freezing," said Ty Lee.
"I'll make a fire," I smiled as I looked up at our old beach house. "There's plenty of stuff to burn in there."
I made my way back up to the house and came back with a bunch of old junk. I started the fire, and once it got big enough I threw our old family portrait in it.
"What are you doing?" Ty Lee asked.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" I said.
"But it's a painting of your family."
"You think I care?"
"I think you do."
"You don't know me, so why don't you just mind your own business?" I snapped.
"Ah, I know you," Ty Lee muttered.
"No, you don't!" I exclaim. "You're stuck in your little Ty Lee World where everything's great all the time."
"Zuko, leave her alone," Mai demanded.
"I'm so pretty, look at me. I can walk on my hands, whoo!" I mocked before I did a handstand and then lied down in the sand. "Circus freak."
Azula giggled at my comment.
"...Yes, I'm a circus freak," said Ty Lee, angry. "Go ahead and laugh all you want. You wanna know why I joined the circus?"
"Here we go," Azula sighed.
"Do you have any idea what my home life was like, growing up with six sisters who look exactly like me? It was like, I didn't even have my own name. I joined the circus because I was scared of spending the rest of my life as part of a matched set. At least I'm different now. Circus freak is a compliment..!"
"Guess that explains why you need ten boyfriends, too," said Mai.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Attention issues?" said Mai. "You couldn't get enough attention when you were a kid so you're trying to make up for it now."
"Well, what's your excuse, Mai? You were an only child for fifteen years," Ty Lee shot. "But even with all of that attention, your aura is this dingy, pasty, gray..."
"I don't believe in auras," Mai stated simply.
"Yeah, you don't believe in anything," I stood up.
"Oh, well, I'm sorry I can't be as high-strung and crazy as the rest of you," Mai shrugged.
"I'm sorry, too," I said. "I wish you would be high-strung and crazy for once. Instead of keeping all your feelings bottled up inside. She just called your aura dingy. Are you gonna take that?"
"What do you want from me?" Mai lied back. "You want a teary confession about how hard my childhood was? Well, it wasn't. I was a rich only child who got anything I wanted, as long as I behaved... and sat still. And didn't speak unless spoken to. My mother said I had to keep out of trouble. We had my dad's political career to think about."
"Well, that's it, then," said Azula. "You had a controlling mother who had certain expectations and if you strayed from them you were shut down. That's why you're afraid to care about anything and why you can't express yourself."
"You want me to express myself? Leave me alone!"
"...Calm down, you guys," said Ty Lee. "This much negative energy is bad for your skin. You'll totally break out."
"Bad skin?" I snapped. "Normal teenagers worry about bad skin. I don't have that luxury. My father decided to teach me a permanent lesson on my face."
I harshly pointed at my scar.
"Sorry, Zuko, I..."
"For so long, I thought that if my dad accepted me, I'd be happy. I'm back home now, my dad talks to me. Huh, he even thinks I'm a hero..! Everything should be perfect, right? I should be happy now, but I'm not. I'm angrier than ever and I don't know why."
"There's a simple question you need to answer, then," said Azula. "Who are you angry at?"
"No one, I'm just angry," I lied.
"Yeah, who are you angry at, Zuko?" Mai asked.
"Everyone... I don't know."
"Is it Dad?"
"No, no."
"You're uncle?" Ty Lee asked.
"Me?" Azula asked.
"No, no... no, no..."
"Then who?" Mai asked. "Who are you angry at?"
"Answer the question, Zuko."
"Talk to us."
"Come on, answer the question."
"Come on, answer it."
"I'm angry at myself!" I screamed as I threw my hands down, causing the fire to become a column of flames.
"Why?"
"Because I'm confused. Because I'm not sure I know the difference between right and wrong anymore."
"You're pathetic," said Azula.
"I know one thing I care about..." Mai said as she walked up to me. "I care about you."
Mai leaned in to kiss me but I softly shrugged her off.
"...Well, those were wonderful performances, everyone," said Azula.
"I guess you wouldn't understand, would you, Azula?" I asked. "Because you're just so perfect."
"Well, yes, I guess you're right," Azula smirked. "I don't have sob stories like all of you. I could sit here and complain about how our mom liked Zuko more than me but I don't really care... My own mother... thought I was a monster... She was right, of course, but it still hurt."
"What Lo and Li said came true," Ty Lee said as she looked at the fire's embers. "The beach did help us learn about ourselves. I feel all smoothed. I'll always remember this."
"You know what would make this trip really memorable?"
[~][~][~]
"We've got some bad news, Chan," Azula smirked when he opened the door.
"Party's over!"
Together, we all destroyed Chan's beach home and burned it down.
Yeah... Now, it's memorable.

Chapter 4-Master Piandao
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
"It's so beautiful," I awed at the meteor shower that rained above us.
Lucky for us, through our adventures in the land of the Fire Nation, we got to see the wonderful sight of endless shooting stars above us.
"Wow, this is amazing to watch," said Katara.
"Kinda makes you realize how insignificant we are," said Sokka.
"Eh, you've seen nothing once, you've seen it a thousand times," Toph shrugged.
One meteor twinkled brightly as it started to head toward us.
"You've never not seen anything like this," said Sokka.
We stared in awe as the meteor soared above our heads and landed some ways away. Watched as a fire erupted around the meteor and we all looked at each other, knowing that we had to check it out. When we arrived at the fire, we noticed that there was a town pretty close by.
"The fire is gonna destroy that town," said Katara.
"Not if we can stop it," said Aang as Appa landed.
"There's a creak over here," Katara pointed as she took Appa's reins. "Kailea and I will bend the water on to the fire."
Everyone except me and Katara hopped off of Appa before Katara whipped his reins. As Appa dipped down just above the creak, Katara and I each bended a large amount of water which we quickly splashed onto the fire. We returned to the creak one last time to give Aang some water that he could use with his air bending to create a dome of air and water. When the fire cleared, we were left with snowing ash.
"Good work, everybody," Aang smiled as Katara landed Appa.
[~][~][~]
The next day, we all ran into the nearby town, not just for food, but also to see if anyone knew about the meteor fire.
"These people have no idea how close they were to getting toasted last night," Aang said as he joined, me, Katara, and Toph at a table to eat.
"Yeah, the worst thing about being in disguise is we don't get the hero-worship anymore," said Toph. "I miss the love."
"Boo-hoo, poor heroes," Sokka sulked.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "You haven't even touched your smoked sea slug. You love meat..!"
"It's just, all you guys can do this awesome bending stuff like putting out forest fires, and flying around, and making other stuff fly around," said Sokka. "I can't fly around, okay? I can't do anything."
"That's not true," said Katara. "No one can read a map like you."
"I can't read at all," said Toph.
"Yeah, and who keeps us laughing with sarcastic comments all the time?" said Aang. "I mean, look at Katara's hair, right? What's up with that?"
"What? What's wrong with my hair?" Katara blushed.
"Nothing, I was just trying to..."
"Look, I appreciate the effort, but the fact is each of you is so amazing and so special, and I'm not," Sokka said sadly. "I'm just the guy in the group who's regular."
Katara and I looked at each other before getting up and joining our brother.
"Sokka," I began. "So what if you're normal? I think the fact that you can't bend makes you strong. You've had to fight with your pure strength and will. If I couldn't bend, there's no way I'd be able to fight. And you fight all the time with no problem."
"Yeah," Katara nodded. "And I know you're feeling down but I hope you know that none of us see you as just 'the guy who's regular'."
Sokka practically ignored us, causing me and Katara to look at each other, but this time, we both put on a mischievous smile, knowing exactly what to do.
"I know something that's going to make you feel better," said Katara.
"You do?" Sokka sniffled.
"Yep. Now, get your sad butt up and follow us," I smiled.
[~][~][~]
"Shopping!" Sokka clapped once we entered a weapons shop. "Maybe a little something to reinvigorate my battling. Hey, how about these?"
Sokka grabbed a set of nunchucks and started to swing them around his body.
"Smack-a-dacka-doo!"
He eventually smacked himself on the head which caused him to fall over and knock some spears over on top of him. I lightly giggled at my brother's actions before moving on to check out the other weapons. As I roamed the shelves my eyes soon landed on a pair of dual swords.
Just like the Blue Spirit's...
"Fine. All I did was find that guy that made Uncle sing for a coin and stole his dual swords," he explained. "Happy now?"
That... That's it?
I lightly scoffed, "Sure. I'm happy. Happy that you shared such a brutal war story with me. Man, it must have been so hard for you to relive that memory."
I giggled at my own teasing.
"Shut up," he growled. "And don't tell Uncle."
"I won't," I shook my head. "I said I wouldn't, and I won't lie to you."
When I said that, Zuko glanced at me with a shocked expression before completely looking away.
"You okay?" I asked. "Did I... say something weird?"
He didn't respond, so I slowly walked up to him and took place in front of him so he had to look at me.
"It's nothing," he whispered. "...I just didn't expect you to be so honest with me."
Is... Is he blushing?! He's blushing?! From something I said... Why do I feel happy about something like that? Do I...
I quickly shook my head, trying to forget the memories as I continued to wander the store.
Why do I have to keep reliving it all?
To get my mind away from horrid memories, I watch Sokka as he tried weapon after weapon after weapon. All of which, not exactly Sokka's style. Nothing, until Sokka found the sword rack and started to slowly pet one of the swords.
"Ooh, that's what Sokka's talking about," Sokka smiled.
"You have a good eye," the shopkeep said as he walked up to Sokka. "That's an original from Piandao. The greatest swords master and sword maker in Fire Nation history. He lives in the big castle up the road from here."
"...That's it," said Aang. "That's what you needed all along, Sokka."
"A sword?"
"Not the sword. A master," said Aang. "We've all had masters to help us get better. You should see if you can study with Piandao."
"That's a great idea," said Katara. "I could've never gotten to where I am without Master Pakku. Everyone needs a teacher."
"Same here with my master, Katuk," I added.
"I learned from badger moles," Toph smiled. "They don't talk, but they're still good teachers."
"It would be nice to be a master swordfighter," Sokka smiled as he unsheathed the sword and examined it. "All right. I'll talk to him."
[~][~][~]
Recalling the shopkeep's earlier words, we found our way up the road to the large castle that stood at the top of a hill. We walked with Sokka all the way up to the castle but hid once he reached the door. We watched as Sokka impatiently used the door's lion knockers to knock on the door.
"Can I help you?" an elder man answered the door.
Sokka quickly stood up straight, "I've come to train with the master."
"You should know the master turns almost everyone away," said the man. "What did you bring him to prove your worth?"
"Well, uh..." Sokka drawled as he searched his pockets.
"Right. Let's get this over with," the man shook his head before allowing Sokka to enter.
"There he goes," I said. "A boy into a man."
"Hm, I think he'll still come out just a boy," said Toph.
[~][~][~]
The four of us returned to our makeshift camp and tried to entertain ourselves to no avail.
"What should we do today?" Aang asked as we all lied down on the ground.
"I'm tapped out," said Toph. "I already picked my toes, twice."
"Twice?" Aang asked.
"The first time was for cleaning, but the second time's just for a sweet picking sensation," Toph explained.
"Sokka's been in charge of the schedule," said Katara. "I'm not sure what we should be doing."
"I don't think lying around is something he would want us to be doing," I said. "Not suggesting we get up, just saying my thoughts."
"Plus, it's so hot today," said Toph.
"How hot is it?" Aang tried to joke.
"I don't know," Toph stated. "Real hot?"
"I-It's so hot, it's so hot, Momo is-is shedding like Appa," Katara smiled. "Huh? Huh?"
"...I guess the jokes don't run in the family," said Aang.
"I'd love to tell a joke but you gotta give me a better entrance than that," I said.
"Oh, everyone's a critic," said Katara.
[~][~][~]
"So, where are we going next?" Katara asked after she had laid out one of Sokka's maps. "We're starting from here."
"No, we're over on this island," Aang pointed.
"You noodle-brains don't know what you're doing," Toph lied down beside us. "I miss Sokka."
"Ooh, I got one," said Katara. "If you miss him so much, why don't you marry him?"
Everyone was silent as a fly flew over to us and Aang blew it away with his air bending.
I miss Sokka too...
[~][~][~]
"...Sokka's coming!" Toph shot up.
All of us sat up straight, looking back and forth to see where exactly Sokka was.
"Hey, guys," Sokka greeted as he walked up to our camp. "What're you doing?"
"Sokka!"
"You're back!"
"It's about time!"
"We missed you so much!"
We all embraced Sokka in a big group hug.
"Say something funny," Aang commanded.
Sokka thought for a moment, "Funny how?"
Aang, Katara, and I erupted with laughter while Toph nodded her head in acceptance.
"What's their deal?" Sokka asked Toph.
"I don't know," Toph turned away from Sokka. "They missed you or something. I didn't care."
"Thanks," said Sokka. "That warms my heart. Anyway, I need some help. Master Piandao said that I needed to choose the material I wanted for my sword and I wanna use the rock from the meteor that landed here the other night. Mind giving me a hand?"
We all nodded a firm 'yes' before running with Sokka to the meteor. Aang, Sokka, Katara, and I all pushed the meteor up to Piandao's castle while Toph used her earth bending to help slide the rock upward. Once we were at Piandao's place, Sokka used the lion knockers to impatiently knock again and this time, Piandao answered the door.
"Who is this?" Piandao asked.
"Oh, these are my friends," said Sokka. "Just other good Fire Nation folks."
We all bowed to greet Master Piandao. Piandao glanced at all of us before bowing himself.
"Do you think we can make a sword out of a meteorite?" Sokka asked him.
"We'll make a sword unlike any other in the world," said Piandao.
[~][~][~]
Master Piandao allowed us inside so we could wait for Sokka to finish his sword. Aang, Katara, and I would sometimes steal peeks at Sokka as he kept the fire in the forge going. It took Sokka a whole day to heat the material and Master Piandao half a day to make the sword. When it was finished, Piandao and Sokka had a final meeting to receive his sword, and all of us got to sit behind Sokka as he did.
"Sokka, when you first arrived, you were so unsure. You even seemed down on yourself," Master Piandao began. "But I saw something in you right away. I saw a heart as strong as a lion turtle, and twice as big. And as we trained, it wasn't your skills that impressed me. No, it certainly wasn't your skills. You showed something beyond that."
Piandao unsheathed Sokka's sword.
"Creativity, versatility, intelligence. These are the traits that define a great swordsman and these are the traits that define you."
Piandao sheathed Sokka's sword and handed it to him.
"You told me you didn't know if you were worthy. But I believe that you are more worthy than any man I have ever trained."
"...I'm sorry, Master," said Sokka. "You're wrong. I am not worthy. I'm not who you think I am. I'm not from the Fire Nation. I'm from the Southern Water Tribe."
We all reacted with extreme shock and discouragement at Sokka's action to reveal himself.
"I lied so that I could learn swordsmanship from you," Sokka continued. "I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry, too," Piandao said before swinging a sword at Sokka.
Sokka quickly ducked and used his sheathed sword to block Piandao's next swing as he stood up. The rest of us stood up, ready to defend Sokka, but he just put his fingers up in front of us.
"No, this is my fight, alone," he said.
The two moved the sword fight to outside where nothing could get damaged and where we could easily watch as an audience. The two stood unmoving until Piandao charged at Sokka. Their swords clashed together multiple times until Piandao was able to push Sokka down. Sokka flipped back up and stood on top of a nearby bridge. Piandao swung at him, but Sokka was able to dodge and block, and soon ran away from Piandao.
"Excellent," said Piandao. "Using your superior agility against an older opponent."
Piando continued to swing at Sokka until Sokka was able to give himself leverage against a wall and shoot himself at Piandao. Piandao easily dodged, but Sokka retreated to higher ground.
"Good use of terrain," said Piandao. "Fighting from the high ground."
The two clashed swords and Sokka was able to pin Piandao's sword under his. Piandao struggled for a moment before forcing Sokka up and back against some bamboo. Sokka retreated into the small forest of bamboo and from there, I lost sight of them until Sokka came running out with Piandao behind him. Piandao quickly ran ahead of Sokka and tried to have Sokka run into his sword, but Sokka was able to duck in time and dodge the sword. To keep himself from falling, Sokka dug his sword into the ground and flung dirt into Piandao's eyes, causing them to be temporarily closed.
"Very resourceful," said Piandao as he still stood ready to fight.
In confusion, Sokka put his sword back up and tried to sneak away, but he stepped on a twig causing it to snap. Piandao heard the snap and charged at Sokka. Sokka tried to defend, but Piandao was able to disarm Sokka and throw his sword to the side. Defenseless, Sokka was pushed down by Piandao. Piandao held the tip of his sword at Sokka, ready to finish the fight, but all of us quickly hopped down to the two, getting ready to defend Sokka.
"Excellent work, Sokka," Piandao said as he swung his sword to the side.
All of us stopped in our tracks as Piandao motioned to his butler who threw Piandao's scabbard that allowed him to sheath his sword.
"I think I'm a little old to be fighting the Avatar," said Piandao and we all looked at each other, a bit shocked that he knew.
"How did you know?" Aang asked.
"Oh, I've been around a while. You pick things up. Of course, I knew from the beginning that Sokka was Water Tribe," Piandao explained as he wiped the dirt from his eyes. "You might want to think of a better Fire Nation cover name. Try 'Lee'. There's a million Lees."
Lee... He's right. There are a lot...
"But why would you agree to train someone from the Water Tribe?" Katara asked.
"The way of the sword doesn't belong to any one nation," said Piandao. "Knowledge of the arts belongs to us all."
Piandao grabbed Sokka's sword from the ground and handed it to him.
"Sokka, you must continue your training on your own. If you stay on this path, I know that one day you will become an even greater master than I am."
Sokka smiled up at Piandao before the two bowed a sweet goodbye. We all left after that but were stopped one last time by Piandao's butler.
"The master wanted you to have this, as something to remember him by," the butler handed Sokka a small bag before bowing goodbye.
We surrounded Sokka as he reached into the bag and pulled out a pai sho tile.
"It's a pai sho tile," said Sokka.
"The white lotus," said Aang.
White lotus... Is Piandao a member of the Order of the White Lotus?!
I smiled to myself.
"What does it mean?" Katara asked.
"I have no idea," Sokka shrugged.
We all looked at Piandao's castle door one last time.
"Ooh, that reminds me," said Sokka. "Toph, I thought you might like this. Since you've probably never had a chance to bend space earth before."
Sokka reached into his pocket and pulled out a small lump of the meteorite for Toph.
"Sweet! Check this out," Toph said as she bended the meteor into a spiral, a star, then a blob.
"You know, I don't think there's such a thing as 'space earth'," said Katara. "If it's from space, then it's not really earth."
"Must you ruin everything?" Sokka exclaimed.
"I can't believe I missed you."

Chapter 3-The River Spirit
Master list. ATLA series master list
Kailea |~|
After our leave from the island in the Fire Nation homeland, we found ourselves flying above a disgustingly polluted river. It was actually at a good time, though, because Appa needed some rest from flying and the river allowed him to easily swim. And Aang, being who he is, wanted to also swim in the river, have some fun while we followed Sokka's strict schedule he made that would end with the invasion plan.
"Hey, guys, I think this river's polluted," Aang frowned after he hopped back onto Appa's saddle.
"You think?" I asked after Aang sprayed the pollution all over us.
"Well, that explains why I can't catch a fish around here," Sokka complained. "Because normally my fishing skills are... off the hook... Get it? Like a fishing hook?"
"Too bad your skills aren't on the hook," Toph joked and we all laughed; well, except for Sokka.
"It looks like we'll need to go somewhere else to get food," said Katara. "...Assuming that'll fit into Sokka's master schedule."
"Hmm... it's doable," Sokka deemed as he stared at his schedule. "But that means only two potty breaks today."
"Hey, maybe we can get food there," Aang pointed.
All of us followed Aang's finger to see a sad, rundown river town just sitting in the middle of the pollution. Since it seemed that it was our only option for food, we decided to park Appa in the vegetation beside the river before making our way over to the town.
"There. Now you look just like a little hill with horns," Aang smiled after placing a blanket of moss over Appa. "Bye, buddy!"
"...I don't feel anything," Toph said as we marched to the edge of the rocks we were on that were beside the town. "Where is this village?"
"It's in the middle of the river, surrounded by water," I explained to the blind girl.
"Sure is!"
We all looked down the side of the rocks to see an old Fire Nation man on top of a crude raft.
"My name's Dock," he greeted happily. "Mind if I ask who you are?"
"We're, um, from the Earth Kingdom colonies," Katara lied.
"Wow, colonials," Dock awed. "Hop on, I'll give you a ride into town."
Agreeing on the idea, we all nodded to each other and made our way down the side of the rocks to take Dock up on his offer.
"Why do you guys live on the river?" Katara asked as Dock rowed the raft along with a stick.
"Because we're a fishing town. At least, that's how it was before the factory moved in," Dock explained as the factory, a few ways away, came into view. "Army makes their metal there. Moved in a few years ago and started gunking up our river. For now, our little village is struggling to survive."
"Thanks for the ride," Aang waved as we hopped off Dock's raft.
Upon our arrival into the river town, we noticed how depressed and gloomy, not only the town was, but the people too. Everyone was just lying about, saying and doing nothing.
These poor people. The Fire Nation is even cruel to their own people.
"Look at this place," said Katara. "It's so sad. We have to do something to help."
"No, we can't waste our time here," Sokka argued. "We have a bigger mission that we need to stay focused on. These people are on their own."
"These people are starving, but you turn your back on them?" Katara stomped up to Sokka. "How can you be so cold and heartless?"
"I'm not turning my back, I'm just being realistic," said Sokka. "We can't go around helping every rinky-dink town we wander into. We'll be helping them all by taking out the Fire Lord."
"Hey, Loudmouth..!" Toph exclaimed as she covered Sokka's mouth. "Maybe we should be a little quieter when we talk about taking out the Fire Lord."
"Come on, Katara, be reasonable about this," Sokka continued once his mouth was uncovered. "You know our mission has to come first."
"...I guess so," Katara said reluctantly.
"Let's just get what we need and go," Aang smiled, trying to make Katara feel better.
Together, we walked our way into the center of the town where we found one small merchant shop that sold food. Sokka rang the bell on the counter and Dock appeared, ready to serve us what we needed.
"Hey, Dock, you work here too?" Sokka asked.
"I'm not Dock, I'm Xu," 'Xu' corrected. "Dock's my brother."
...But that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
"But we just saw you," said Aang. "You're even wearing the same clothes. The only difference is your hat."
"Dock works on the docks, that's why they call him 'Dock'. And I work in the shop, that's why they call me 'Xu'," Xu explained.
"I... don't get it," said Aang.
"Me neither," Xu smiled before he brought a large crate up onto the counter. "What can I get you?"
Inside the crate was a large amount of seemingly unfresh fish and clams.
"Hey, I'll give you a special deal," said Xu. "If you buy three fish, I'll throw in a clam for free."
Sokka pushed down onto a clam which caused the clam to spit out polluted water from the river. Katara, Aang, and I all shot back in disgust.
"We'll just take the fish," said Sokka. "Mind telling your brother we need a ride back to shore?"
Xu quickly wrapped up our fish and handed it to Katara before ducking under the counter and changing back into Dock.
"Hey, Colonials," Dock greeted. "My brother says you need a lift."
Dock hopped over the counter of his 'brother's' shop to lead the way to the docks, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw a young boy approach Katara. I stopped and watched their interaction.
"Can you spare some food?" the boy asked.
Katara knelt down and handed the boy one of our fish, "I wish I could help more."
The boy bowed happily to Katara before rushing over to a sick woman lying in a bed. Katara stared for a moment before turning to see that I had been watching.
"...Please don't tell Sokka," she said.
"Oh, I won't," I said before placing a hand on her shoulder. "And I know how much you want to help these people. Sometimes little things are all that we can give."
Katara nodded before taking one last glance at the sick woman.
[~][~][~]
After dinner, we started to clean some of the water from the river to use as our drinking and bathing water for later. Aang and Toph bended the water and dirt apart while Katara and I bended the unmuddied water into a large pot above a fire to boil.
"Our detour into town today has completely thrown off our schedule," Sokka complained. "It's gonna take some serious finagling to get us back on track."
"Finagle away o schedule master," Toph frowned.
We all began to surround Sokka and his schedule as he explained what needed to be done to fix it.
"Well, for starters, it looks like we'll need to wake up forty-three minutes earlier every day."
"Forty-three minutes?" Katara questioned as she handed out cups of water.
"Look, we only have a few weeks to get to the Fire Lord in time for the invasion and the eclipse which, by the way, only lasts for eight minutes. And we just lost a whole day. So if we want to make up the time and stay on schedule we have to wake up early."
"Well, I'm not waking up early," Toph stated as she lied back.
"Or we could just cut out all of our eating breaks," Sokka pouted.
"Excuse me?"
"No way."
"What?"
"Forget it."
"...I got it, how's this?" said Sokka. "From now on, we'll take food breaks and potty breaks at the same time."
We all immediately dejected the idea.
"Hey, it might be gross but it's efficient. Either way, we have to leave here first thing tomorrow morning."
[~][~][~]
"I, um, I got you something."
He reached into one of his pockets and pulled out a small, thin, green box. He awkwardly handed it to me and I gladly accepted it. I slowly took the top off the box to see that inside was a blue ribbon necklace with a golden crescent moon pendant. I stared at it, a bit in shock, before looking up at him with a smile.
"I know you said that you didn't want anything but... I remembered your mother's necklace and how much it meant to you, so I thought that maybe this could, uhβ"
"...I love it," I whispered. "Could you help me put it on?"
He nodded as he grabbed the necklace from the box. I turned around and parted the back of my hair so that he could easily tie the necklace. I sat for a few seconds, waiting to feel the ribbon lightly wrap around my neck. But it didn't happen.
"Kailea, it took me long to realize it, but..."
Curious at what was taking so long, I turned and found him standing right in front of me with his arm straight out, dangling the necklace in my face.
"I hate you..."
The whole world around me went completely dark. I couldn't see anything until the necklace caught fire within his grip and quickly turned to ash. With the last amount of fire illuminating a small circle of light around us, I turned and ran away in fear. I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears which blended with the sound of my ragged breaths. When I ran into darkness and couldn't see anything, I stopped. I placed my hands on my knees and took a moment to catch my breath.
"Kailea..."
I sharply inhaled as his figure was in front of me again, now illuminated by lighting that flowed out of his fingertips as he charged the strike. I felt myself completely freeze, unable to act, or even scream. He outstretched his arm, fingertips pointed at me. Lightning shot out of them. Its sharp, piercing light highlighting its path as it hitβ
I softly gasped as my eyes shot open. I awoke with a start but I stayed in my position of lying down in my sleeping bag. Cold sweat cooled my body and made my sleeping back stick to me.
Every night... I get scared by a different nightmare but they all end the same...
I slowly arose, letting my skin breathe by removing some of my sleeping bag. From my upright position, I noticed a figuring slowly trying to sneak into an empty sleeping bag. Their long hair gave them away.
"Katara?" I whispered.
I saw her figure jolt in surprise before sharply turning to face me. She gave me an awkward smile as she stood by her sleeping bag.
"Hey, Kailea. Sorry if I woke you up," she whispered back, still wearing an awkward smile.
"What're you doing up? It's really late."
"I just... uh," she drawled. "Had to... Had to pee..! You know, it suddenly woke me up. Kind of an emergency..."
"...Uh-huh," I nodded with slight suspicion.
"Well, now I'm just gonna go back to sleep," Katara said as she wiggled into her sleeping bag. "Good night."
"Night," I shrugged before lying back down.
Weird...
[~][~][~]
The next morning, everyone woke up to a sick Appa, lying on his side.
"I think Appa's sick," Katara stated.
"What? Appa's sick? That's awful!" Sokka exclaimed.
"Wow, Sokka, I didn't realize you cared so much," said Toph.
"Of course I care," said Sokka. "I might as well just throw our schedule away now."
We all turned to him and glared in disappointment at his lack of sympathy for Appa's health. Noticing our glares, Sokka quickly ran up to Appa and lightly pet him.
"And I'm concerned because my big, furry friend doesn't feel well."
"He must've gotten sick from being in the polluted water," Toph suggested.
"He doesn't look sick," said Aang. "Are you okay, buddy?"
As a response, Appa opened his mouth with a weak roar to reveal his tongue.
"His tongue is purple," Aang said as he dragged Appa's tongue out. "That can't be good. Katara, can you heal him?"
"It looks like he needs some medicine," said Katara. "Maybe we can find the right herbs in town."
[~][~][~]
Hitching another ride from Dock, we made it back to the river town and started to make our way to Xu's store. But something was weird. Today, the people of the town were more lively and they were moving around. They all seemed to be in better spirits for some reason.
"Is it just me, or does this place seem different?" Toph asked.
"This place is definitely different," I said. "What do you think happened?"
Everyone shrugged at my question before continuing to head towards the store.
"Hey, Xu, what's going on with everyone today?" Sokka asked.
"Ah, something amazing happened last night," Xu smiled. "Food was delivered by a mysterious and wonderful person. The Painted Lady."
"The painted who now?" Katara asked.
"The Painted Lady," Xu repeated as he placed a small wooden statuette of a woman with red body markings and pale brown drapes on the counter. "She's part of our town's lore. They say she's a river spirit who watches over our town in times of need. I always thought she was just a legend. Until now."
Xu motioned to the happy people of the river town.
"See, we don't need to help these people, they already have someone to help them," Sokka told Katara before turning back to Xu. "All we need is medicine for our sick friend."
"Medicine? Sorry, all the medicine we have goes to the factory," said Xu. "That's why there's so many sick people in our village."
"Looks like we need to stay another night so Appa can rest," said Katara.
"I guess you're right," Sokka sighed. "You got any more food to sell?"
Xu ducked down quickly before popping back up with a fish in each hand.
"Would you like the one-headed fish or the two-headed fish?" Xu asked.
I don't think the second option is natural...
"Two-headed," Sokka grabbed it from Xu.
We all looked at Sokka with disgust and slight concern.
"What, you get more for your money that way," Sokka held the fish up to us and we all sweatdropped.
"We need to leave before Sokka kills us," I said and we all took off running.
[~][~][~]
That night, I tossed and turned. I wasn't able to fall asleep at all. At times, I would space out and hope that my mind would eventually give in, but it didn't.
I guess I'm just too scared to relive anything right now...
I ultimately got so tired that I wasn't tired anymore and thought about going for a short walk. When I made it to the edge of the rocks, I looked out at the river town and noticed a large amount of fog that surrounded it.
Whoa... Did I actually fall asleep?
As I watched the fog drift around the town, a bright blue light caught my attention. The light pulsed within a small shack that was in the river town and stopped once a draped figure came out of it.
Is that the Painted Lady? She's real..?
The Painted Lady paused for a moment before jumping into the river and disappearing. I continued to stare at the town as I watched the fog slowly disappear. Once all of the fog was gone, I decided to head back to the group and try to fall asleep again, until out of the corner of my eye, I caught the Painted Lady appearing at the crude dock that Dock worked at. I watched as the Painted Lady removed her hat that was covered with drapes and revealed herself.
"Katara..!"
I quickly covered my mouth, regretting my impulsive action. She shot her head up at me before running up the inclined rocks to get to me.
"You're the Painted Lady?" I immediately questioned her. "You've tricked these people into thinking you're their savior?"
"No, not at all, it's not like that," Katara quickly denied. "Look, I felt so bad for these people that I helped them the other night. But when Xu mentioned the Painted Lady, I thought... I thought that I should take up the part..."
Katara glanced at me and noticed my shocked and slightly disapproving expression.
"You know these people need help," said Katara. "And we can't do anything for them right now because they think we're Fire Nation. I can't heal anyone without suspicion unless I'm the Painted Lady. This was the only way."
I lightly rubbed my eyes before sighing.
"Katara, I understand that this pose is the only way you can heal these people but..." I paused. "But it's not the only way you can help them. If they find out that you've been impersonating their guardian spirit... they won't be very pleased."
"Please, Kailea, a couple more nights. These people need the Painted Lady," Katara begged.
"...Fine. But only a couple more nights. We need to be leaving soon. You know Sokka and his schedule," I said.
Katara happily smiled before tightly embracing me.
"You won't tell anyone?" she asked.
"You have my word."
[~][~][~]
"Hi, Dock, is Xu around?" Sokka greeted once we made it back into town.
"Let me check," Dock said before running around and coming back as Xu. "Hey there, back again, are you?"
"We need more food," Toph pushed Sokka out of the way. "Our friend is still sick and we can't leave until he's better."
Toph placed some coins on the counter and Xu replaced them with clams.
"Did you make Appa sick, by the way?" I whispered to Katara.
"I just gave him some berries that dyed his tongue purple," Katara whispered back.
Oh... Smart.
"Oh, well, that's too bad," said Xu. "Maybe if you guys are lucky, the Painted Lady will visit you in the night and heal your friend."
"And maybe she'll cook us a midnight snack and we'll all have a sing-along," Sokka responded sarcastically.
"Yeah, maybe," Xu smiled. "You know, last night she visited us again. Healed most of our sick folks."
"Is that why this place seems so festive?" Aang asked.
"Yep, it's all because of the Painted Lady," Xu explained as we watched some men erect a statue of the spirit.
"Can you believe how much an entire village can be affected by one lady?" Katara asked. "I mean, spirit?"
Smooth.
"Well, I hope she returns every night," said Sokka. "Otherwise this place would go right back to the way it was."
"Why would you say that?" Katara glared. "Look how much better off these people are."
"Yeah, now. But without her, they wouldn't be able to fend for themselves," Sokka argued. "If she really wanted to help she would use her spirit magic to blow up that factory."
Sokka waved his arms around as he imitated a spirit and then finished with an explosion sound effect.
"Spirit magic doesn't work that way, Sokka," Aang said. "It's more like..."
Aang did his own imitation of a spirit exploding something before the two joined together to laugh.
[~][~][~]
That night, still not being able to sleep, I helped Katara get ready to become the Painted Lady. She dressed herself in flowing drapes while I applied her red body paint according to the Painted Lady statuette. When Katara was ready, she started her way towards the river town while I headed back to my sleeping bag for another night of spacing out.
"Hello, Painted Lady spirit!"
I stopped just by my sleeping bag when Aang shouted at Katara's fading figure. I noticed that Katara started to run faster and before Aang could run after her, I quickly grabbed his arm.
"Kailea?" he questioned.
"I-I don't think the Painted Lady wants to be bothered right now..." I tried to stop him.
"This'll only take a second," Aang smiled. "We need her to heal Appa and then she can continue back to helping the town."
Aang freed himself from my grasp and sprinted towards the Painted Lady. I sighed to myself before running after both of them
"Excuse me, I don't mean to bother you," Aang said as we chased Katara up some rocks. "But my friend's sick and we're on kind of a tight schedule."
I continued to run just a few meters from Aang as he chased after the fake spirit as she made it to the river.
"Wait, but I'm the great bridge between your world and mine," Aang explained to her.
Aang and I made it to the shore where we both used our water bending to follow her to the river town.
"I know Hei Bai, we're close friends," Aang added.
Aang continued to chase after Katara while I continued to chase after Aang. We followed after one another all the way to the other edge of the river, past the town. Aang eventually caught up to Katara and she did her best to hide her face with her hat.
"My name's Aang. I'm the Avatar," Aang greeted as he showed his arrow.
"Well, hello Avatar," Katara said in a strange voice that almost made me laugh. "I wish I could talk, but I am very busy."
"Yeah, me too. I hate that," said Aang. "You know, you're really pretty for a spirit. I don't get to meet too many spirits, but the ones I do meet... not very attractive."
"Thank you, but..."
"You seem familiar, too," said Aang.
"Aang, I think the Painted Lady has to go," I urged. "She said she's really busy."
"No, but she really seems familiar," Aang insisted.
"Look, I really should get going," Katara went to run away until Aang air bended her hat off.
"Katara?" Aang asked.
"Hi, Aang," Katara sighed.
"You're the Painted Lady? But how?" Aang pointed.
"I wasn't at first, I was just trying to help the village," Katara explained. "But since everyone thought that's who I was anyway... I guess I just kind of became her."
"So you've been sneaking out at night?" Aang asked. "Wait, is Appa even sick?"
"He might be sick of the purple berries I've been feeding him, but other than that, he's fine," Katara admitted.
"And, did you know about this?" Aang turned to me.
"Only for a day," I shrugged. "I interrogated her about it, too, but I also promised to keep it a secret for her."
"I can't believe you lied to everyone so you could help these people," Aang frowned at Katara.
"I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have."
"No, I think it's great," said Aang. "You're like a secret hero."
Katara smiled at him.
They're adorable...
"Well, if you want to help... there's one more thing I have to do," Katara explained.
[~][~][~]
Katara explained to me and Aang that she wanted to destroy the factory that polluted the river. With all of the things that Dock/Xu explained about the factory, I had no problem with agreeing to do it.
"You want to destroy this factory?" Aang clarified as we stood just outside of it.
"Yes, Sokka was just kidding, but he was right," said Katara. "Getting rid of this factory is the only way to help these people permanently.
The three of us ran inside and immediately split up. Katara cut the chains of buckets to make lava spill and collect. Aang dumped the larger buckets onto the mess that was already made by Katara. And I bended a large wave of water from the river onto the lava inside the factory to put it all out of use. When the factory started to explode from malfunction, we decided to leave. By the time we made it back to the others and got Katara out of her Painted Lady disguise, the sun was above the horizon.
"Shh, we don't want to wake Sokka," Katara said to Aang as he just finished making exploding noises.
Much to our surprise, both Sokka and Toph were already up and waiting for us.
"Hi... Sokka," Katara greeted. "We were just out on a morning walk."
"Oh, really?" Sokka frowned. "A morning walk?"
Sokka quickly pulled Katara's sleeping bag out from behind him and dumped out the moss that was stuffed inside of it. Katara, Aang, and I hung our heads in guilt.
"I know you're the Painted Lady," Sokka pointed. "I know you've been sneaking out at night. And I know you've been lying about Appa and feeding him purple-izing-tongue berries."
Sokka pointed to Toph who stuck out her own purple tongue as she held up the bag of berries.
"Katara, what you did put our whole mission in jeopardy. We're leaving right now."
Dejectedly, Katara began to walk towards her stuff to pack it up.
"And how long have you two known about this?" Sokka asked me and Aang.
"Hey, I just found out this morning," Aang said before taking off.
"I found out the other night," I told him.
"And you didn't bother to tell me?"
"No," I stated simply before walking away.
I heard Sokka exclaim in extreme annoyance at my unwillingness to do what he wants. I smiled at myself, pleased that I have bothered him once again as a sibling.

The sound of dangerous motors pulled us all out of our actions of packing up. We all rushed to the edge of the rocks to look at the people from the factory coming into town.
"What's going on?" Toph asked.
"Fire Nation soldiers are heading to the village," Aang explained.
"What did you do?" Sokka shot at Katara.
"...I kind of destroyed their factory."
"You what?" Sokka yelled.
"It was your idea," Katara shot.
"I was joking! I also said to use spirit magic and made funny noises," Sokka facepalmed. "Did you even think this through? The army's gonna blame the villagers. They're headed there right now to get revenge."
"Well, what was I supposed to do?"
"Leave, do nothing."
"...No! I will never, ever turn my back on people who need me!"
Sokka backed up a small bit at Katara's outburst.
"I'm going down to the village. And I am gonna do whatever I can."
Katara started to march down to the village by herself. I glanced at Sokka as he stared down for a moment.
"She can't do this by herself, you know that," I told him.
Sokka gave me a quick look before running after Katara.
"Wait, I'm coming too," Sokka told her.
"I thought you didn't want to help," said Katara.
"You need me, and I will never turn my back on you."
"Sokka, you really do have a heart," Katara teased before they shared a hug.
"He really does have a heart, doesn't he?" Aang cried as he looked to me and Toph for a hug.
Quickly, Toph elbowed him and made him tumble to the ground.
"And you really have an empty hole in there, don't you?" I teased Toph.
"Yep!" she smiled. "You know me so well."

"All right, so, here's the plan," said Sokka. "Toph, Kailea, and I will all stay back here while Aang and Katara head towards the town. Toph, you're just going to continuously smash a rock on the ground to create a beat while Appa and I make some eerie sounds to accompany it. Kailea, you're going to use your water bending to create fog for Katara but also a smokescreen to cover me and Toph. While we're setting the tone, Katara will go in as the Painted Lady and use her water bending to defend the town while Aang will hide and also defend the town with his air bending. Everyone understand their roles?"
Sokka looked in between all of us to see us nodding our heads.
"Good. Let's break."
We all rushed to get into position. Lucky for us, we moved just quickly enough to get Katara to the town before the soldiers did any harm to the town's folks. I watched from afar as Katara used her water bending to throw some of the soldiers' motorboats into the rocks to destroy them. In fear, all but the soldiers' leader fled. The leader stood ready to fight and bended some fire at Katara. To dodge, Aang helped Katara fly straight up into the air before using his air bending to skip the leader like a stone in the polluted river.
"Leave this village and never come back," Katara warned the soldier before he was picked up by someone on a motorboat, and they sped away.
Once the fight was done, Sokka, Toph, and I rowed into the town to join Katara and Aang.
"Thank you," Dock approached Katara.
"Painted Lady, you're the best!"
"Me and my brothers really owe you a lot," Dock smiled. "...Hey, wait a minute. I know you. You're not the Painted Lady. You're that colonial girl."
Katara brought a hand to her face to see that her red body paint was rubbing off.
"Yeah, you're the lady that gave me a fish," the little boy from day one said.
"You've been tricking us. You're a water bender," said Dock.
"She's a water bender."
"How dare you act like our Painted Lady?"
The crowd began to shout angrily at Katara until Sokka stepped in front of her.
"Maybe she is a water bender, but she was just trying to help you," Sokka shouted over them. "Because of her, that factory won't be polluting your river and the army is gone. You should be down on your knees, thanking her."
"Sokka, it's okay," said Katara. "I shouldn't have acted like someone I wasn't and I shouldn't have tricked you. But I felt like I had to do something. It doesn't matter if the Painted Lady is real or not. Because your problems are real, and this river is real. You can't wait around for someone to help you. You have to help yourself."
"She's right, but, what should we do?" Dock asked.
"Maybe we can clean the river," Toph and I said together from the crowd.
"Yeah, we can clean the river."
The crowd began to cheer before heading off to begin their start of cleaning.
"Thank you," said Dock. "You know, you're not so bad for a water bender."
"You wouldn't mind keeping that a secret, by the way, would you?" Sokka asked.
"No problem. Keeping my mouth shut is my personal specialty," Dock smiled. "My brother Xu, on the other hand, ho, he's a blabbermouth."
"So, then, will you hide this from Xu?" I ask.
"Sure thing!"
Sokka facepalmed at the man with many identities.
"So, Dock, are you gonna help us clean?" Katara asked.
"No, ma'am, I'm going to get my other brother, Bushi. He loves cleaning rivers," Dock simply took off his hat to reveal a straw one that hid inside. "All right, I'm Bushi. Let's get some river cleaning done."
"Aha, I knew it. I knew you were the same guy," Aang pointed at Bushi. "You're the shop owner and the boat guy."
"Oh, you must be talking about my brothers, Dock and Xu," said Bushi.
"No, I just saw you," Aang frowned. "You switched hats and called yourself a different name."
"Oh, you know who does that? My brother Dock. He's crazy."

Lucky for us, it only took one day to completely clean the river. And by the next day, we were ready to continue on with Sokka's new and improved schedule.
Ahh, a happy ending...
