❝ Did it? He must be damaged. ❞
The slight smile held no warmth. He knew he wasn’t the only person with past issues. That didn’t prevent him from feeling an odd form of camaraderie with the unmentioned friend. He didn’t pry, letting that part of Albert’s history to remain unsaid. He wouldn’t be too keen on discussing such things with someone else, after all. He finished his meal shortly after that, but he stayed. He wasn’t in the mood to pace the study or lock himself in his room, and while he didn’t know the Frenchman very well, he still provided some form of COMPANY.
❝ But I suppose your lack of CONTROL is the reason you’re here. ❞
He had to hand it to Charles; the man was effective when it came to catering to the needs of different mutants. Maybe it was partly due to his ability to read minds: he knew how to best reach out to different people. It wasn’t something he held against the other mutant; in fact, he was grateful that the mutants had a man like Charles Xavier on their side. He flicked his finger to the side to open the fridge and take two bottles of soda from the door shelf.
The metal caps popped open once he’d set the bottles down on the counter, and he slid one over to Albert. He would have preferred beer, but the Xaviers didn’t have any. Only a wine cellar, and Erik wasn’t that posh. Soda would have to do until he got his own six pack.
❝ So you’re staying. Did the French Embassy let you go on leave, or is this strictly off the books? ❞
“He... was...”
The two words were barely above a whisper, and Albert averted his eyes to his sandwich. With Charles not around, he let his thoughts drift, however briefly, to Edmond. That beautiful, strong, broken man that the brunet still couldn’t decide what his feelings were. He’d cared for him, and feared him, loved him and hated him. Perhaps they were all more similar than he thought.
Lehnsherr’s question pulled Albert from his musings and he nodded, taking and swallowing another bite.
“Yes, I would rather like to be able to stop from taking the whole of someone’s emotion from them. If I had used my gift before, Mr. Lehnsherr, you would be incapable of feeling it for several hours at the least, and I would have it instead. Would not be very pleasant for either of us I think.”
He watched the small display of the other mutant’s powers, a smile at how casual, easy. it seemed. His aura reading was like that, but nowhere near as visually impressive to another person. He took the bottle slid towards him, raising it a moment.
“Merci.”
Drinking a few sips he hummed at the flavor. Soda was still a little new to him, he usually preferred tea or water. But the fizzy drink was still good.
“I am here only for the weekends, during the week I will need to be back at the Embassy. It is not so long a flight and I have the money. As far as they know, I am here learning more about American culture. Any interesting tidbits I might take back and impress them with?”

He’d heard of the scandal, but only snippets. Thomas was never someone to listen to gossip, whether it concerned him or not. He remembered what it was like to be the subject of hushed whispers and hateful looks. It wasn’t an existence he would wish on ANYONE, especially someone he considered as nice as Albert. Yet there they were, both reeling from the tale and truth that the other had just revealed.
As he wasn’t part of the events, he didn’t consider to share his thoughts or judge Albert for it. What he learned was just a tiny fraction of what happened, and to PRAISE or CONDEMN the other based on limited knowledge would be unseemly. Not to mention inaccurate. Albert wasn’t there to be judged; he had just shared a secret.
“Thank you for trusting me enough, Albert. But I find that the sins of the father are not the sins of the son. My outlook towards you remains unchanged.”
And he smiled to prove his words, though it faded a few minutes later as he pondered what Albert had said last. The anger over the former general’s actions would most likely create a chain of events, and he worried what those EFFECTS might be. Knowing the temperament of the people of Janina, it wouldn’t be pretty. He drew a deep breath as if to calm himself, before he looked at the other diplomat again.
“What do you plan to do? If you wish to skip the events and see the queen on your own time, I can cover for you.”
That was the only thing he could do to help; he didn’t have any authority over the queen’s people. But he also wasn’t going to sit by and watch as Albert was verbally attacked ( possibly even physically ) when he could do something about it.
Thomas’s acceptance meant much to Albert, and his relief showed in a smile. He certainly didn’t want to lose his friendship with the Englishman, and knowing that sentiment was mutual was certainly a step towards making him feel better.
However, the thought of not going to the proceedings, not at least trying to be there, had never crossed his mind. The French ambassador had gone out on a limb just bringing him here, much less taking the son of Mondego under his wing. He wasn’t about to bow out.
“I am going, that is decided. If I can get a word in I plan to make a formal apology, to both the council and Haydée, as I never had the chance to before. After that, if they still do not want me in attendance then I will simply wait outside until it is over and get the report from the Ambassador. That is all I can do.”
If he knew Haydée, if she hadn’t changed in the time they hadn’t seen each other, then he had already been forgiven. That night under the Champs-Elysees, when he’d convinced her to leave the collapsing building, his father’s last words to the both of them, that had sealed something for him at least, and for her. They both lost the people closest to them, the man they both loved died in front of them. That had meant something, had to.
He voiced none of that to the raven haired man, again not wanting to delve into that part of the story. And he’d spoken enough of his past that evening.
“But I thank you for your offer, Thomas. If I’m not allowed to speak, will you deliver a written apology for me? I’ll write it tonight.”
{ ☆ } ┈ ears are failing her as they pick up the unusual ‘mademoiselle’ word he used —— the word doesn’t seem to register as a COMMON word to her. not many people use that term of addressing anymore. although bewildered, she doesn’t hesitate to remain the steady balance she acquired once before with her legs; the fortunate news above all right now is that there’s no more heartless after them. for now.
❝ r-really, i’m fine…! i really appreciate your concern! ❞
hands move with haste in front of her, bashfully waving as a feeble sign of reassurance. if he’s a FOREIGNER, then making sure he’s as comfortable as possible whilst his stay here is a new priority. ❝ that sounds pretty adventurous; seems fun! ❞ she speaks with a tinge of exuberant merriment, his description reminiscent to sora.
it takes her a moment or two for the temporary shock of being bowed to fade away —— never had anyone bowed before her. a change of events, though, a very faint, natural squirm enters her body when the old memories of herself returns mercilessly.
❝ you don’t know of them? ❞ strange. regardless of what world, there’s always a few heartless lingering around —— that’s just how human hearts work. ❝ those are… what we call ‘heartless’ here. they’re… ❞ a little squabble is commenced within her head as she tries to find an acceptable definition.
❝ …they’re the results of what human hearts can manifest. ❞
Albert smiled at her confusion to his French, rubbing the back of his head a little sheepishly. It was a habit he’d never been able to fully shake.
“I apologize, my mother tongue slips into my speech often, though I have spoken English for many years now. It means ‘miss’ that is all. If you feel any unsteadiness please let me know. The least I could do is get you to a doctor in that case.”
He chuckled at Naminé’s exuberance, blue eyes bright with amusement. She may have looked like Eugénie, but their manners were different, though hers was no less charming. The brunet felt sure that they could probably become friends.
“It is, sometimes. Usually it is work, however. But every now and then I get a chance to explore. Today I just happened to be in the right place I suppose.”
Her confusion that he didn’t know what the black creature was made him blink a couple times. He shook his head in response to her question, though didn’t speak again for a moment as she named the creature.
Heartless
“I have never seen such a thing... Though I have seen some strange things, even on my home world.”
A demon who possessed an innocent man, slowly taking over his heart and body. That he knew was real. Could Gankutsuou perhaps been one of these ‘Heartless’? He was unsure, and wasn’t about to broach the question.
GIFT. It certainly didn’t feel like one; the only reason he used it was to help him find Schmidt. Now known as SEBASTIAN SHAW and a mutant himself, the man was stronger than he ever hoped to be. All because he could control his powers and Erik couldn’t. But the brief demonstration outside proved that he could harness something other than anger to use his powers. Charles managed to accomplish more than Schmidt in ten minutes; it was something that he found easy to believe.
By the time he and Charles were done, they went their separate ways: Charles to the study and him to his bedroom. He showered for a bit and then changed into clean clothes before heading to the kitchen for something to eat. He was still there when Charles led Albert in, apparently part of the tour of the manor. He looked down at the lettuce salad he was eating while his friend and mentor pointed out a few key features of the room. The tour ended there as Charles left Albert to check on the other mutants, but not before he invited the Frenchman to help himself to anything in the pantry.
Erik waited until Albert looked settled before he lowered his fork onto the side of his plate. He knew what the other could do, and after what happened, he couldn’t help but wonder if his MOOD had been tampered with. Maybe the man couldn’t HELP himself, and scolding him for something that was out of his control was the last thing on Erik’s mind.
But still, he wanted to know.
❝ Did you help me? Out there, I mean. ❞
He gestured to the side of his head, indicating that he was referring to his thoughts and emotions.
The mansion oddly reminded the Frenchman of his childhood home, at least the summer one. It had been a long time since he’d lived anywhere close to this level, but it adapted into a school well, and he complimented Charles on this. He didn’t meet any other students, though he was assured that there were a couple more; a young woman named Raven and a young man named Alex. The teacher seemed to be close to Raven given the slight shift in his aura when he spoke about her, a sort of nostalgic fondness. Perhaps a longtime friend.
Once Albert’d settled his luggage in a room he finished the tour in the kitchen, after mentioning he was a bit peckish. On flight food had never agreed with him. Still, he hadn’t expected to see Lehnsherr there as well. He still felt a little awkward as he’d almost lost control and reached out to him earlier that day. That dark miasma was still burned into his mind, though thankfully it wasn’t there at the moment.
After thanking Charles, he set about making a simple sandwich, not quite sure how to start a conversation with the other occupant of the kitchen. However it seemed uneeded, as the moment he’d settled down and had a few bites of his food, the other man spoke up.
The question was a surprise, and he blinked a couple times. He wasn’t aware that Charles had told him the other part of his gift, and suddenly felt self-conscious. He didn’t like not being able to fully control that part, it was why he’d taken to doing his best to emotionally keep himself at a distance from most.
“Non, I was able to see but I managed to keep myself from tampering. It was...difficult, particularly before Charles did whatever it was that he did. Your aura before then it...”
He paused, his mind going to Edmond and he shook his head, his gaze down at the table.
“It reminded me of an old friend.”
