Sephiroth has never known peace. It sounded almost surreal and yet it was true. The man became soldier when he was neither a man, nor even a teenage – 12 years old. “He’ll not only cope but also become the best” said Hojo back then and Sephiroth had nothing to do but prove him right. He wasn’t tired of war just before he didn’t know another life – his existence has been mission after mission, kill after kill, making him famous, valuable for Corporation and… lonely.
You would not want to hang out with a man who doesn’t want to be a part of company, especially if you had seen this man killing with the same tranquil expression on his face anyone. Anyone at all. He had never known peace but he knew rest and now he was resting after the mission. Basically, the mission for him was never over until he came back to the squads, taking compulsory health examination provided by Hojo – one of those lab rats – and then having a day off. If anything can go wrong, it will, therefore Sephiroth was circling near the camp to prevent this possibility. That couldn’t be an enemy – an enemy wouldn’t sit his back to the camp – and Sephiroth came closer not even trying to make his steps less loud. People were tired after… what they had done to the town, and when people are tired they tend to be too nervous… stressed. Sephiroth didn’t want Tseng to shoot him. He was more than sure that he would evade but it wasn’t a thing he would like to prove. “Why aren’t you celebrating with the others?” asked general taking a place next to turk. He was sure that Tseng was smoking but to Sephiroth’s delight he had mistaken. “They have found supplies of sake”

The Turk had caught the sound of the man’s boots against the gravel long before he neared, freezing in his tracks for a couple of moments, probably to estimate whether Tseng could be a company worth keeping. It could count for a nice and proper estimation for Tseng wasn’t sure himself. For once in his life he felt tired and longing for the reunion with the other Turks, his sort of family.
“Thank you, General, but I am not fond of it, actually.” He replied politely and specified. “Of sake.”
It would certainly raise questions. It always had. Racial prejudice had already taken strong roots in the infantry. They were killing people of Wutai, nurturing hatred for them through mockery and denying their traditions. They thought the Wutainese different, strange and… all alike. He bore no grudge, but still found it fascinatingly stupid to paint all people with the same brush.
His was another approach. Take General Sephiroth, for instance… he was from military, too, but different from all of the grey infantry mass. No wonder, he was the leader. Tseng turned his face to look at the man beside him. What was he – a couple of years younger? But in contrast to Sephiroth’s mighty stature, it was Tseng who looked younger and definitely feeble
“Why aren’t you celebrating with your people, General?” A counterquestion. “It’s your victory, after all, I had no share of it.”
Fortunately.
“It’s not my or their victory, it’s victory of the ShinRa Corporation” that phrase came out quick and sounded unnatural. Maybe because something alike he was used telling the press when he had to. Lazard wrote for him speeches and made him learn all the answers to all possible questions by heart because Lazard knew… Sephiroth was awfully honest. How would the press like to hear about famous general killing women and children with no mercy, proving those stupid gossips that he had demon blood in him?
“But, anyway, I never celebrate such things. It’s distasteful” Sephiroth didn’t bother to explain why. If Tseng understood him – that’s good. If he didn’t, general would waste no time explaining why celebrating bloodbath was distasteful, you either get it at once or not. “And I always resolve such conflicts efficiently, it’s not a big deal”
Sephiroth caught himself on being overly talkative in comparison to his usual behavior and faintly smiled. Was it some kind of turk aura that made him and all others talk?
“But soldiers need to celebrate” he continued thoughtfully “For some of them it’s the first real fight. They are stressed. They are tired. They need to believe that everything is over… it never is, actually” Sephiroth turned head and looked straight at Tseng “You are Wutaiese. How does it feel to see people of your kind being slaughtered? Does it feel different or no?”

“You are a marvel, General,” said Tseng. His grey almond-shaped eyes were now studying the face of his opponent more intently, as if there was something new floating on the surface he could grasp about this person on this very moment. This man was interesting when he had finally forced himself into speech. ‘Forced’ was the word, for it was obvious – Sephiroth wasn’t the one to take much pleasure in idle talks. “You’ve worked out a scheme of our further actions in mere moments.”
No wonder in most of cases Wutai settlements never had any chance to prepare for the Shinra army invasions – the leader was quick in decision-making.
“And no, no objections. As for the tracks…”
He took a pen out of his pocket and made use of a paper tissue to scribble a simple map, vaguely outlining the Icicle, Great Glacier and the mountainous region more to the north.
“I have the more detailed images in the room,” he explained. “We are now here, in Icicle. The party’s interest lay in the rocky area, bordering on the Gaea’s Cliff. Honestly, Shinra wanted to make use of this expedition aside from its initial mission. And so in the papers their mission is stated as fossil-hunt, rather than… monster-hunt, you know. That said, they were also well prepared to spend quite a time there in the frozen wastes, bringing all the necessities with them. I have the detailed track right to their base camp. The soldiers had had it, too. And they were gone, mind it. So the question is if we should follow the same route? There are plenty of road trails we could choose as for the Great Glacier area… The base camp is pretty much here.”
For a couple of seconds he had been holding the ball-pen point at the right spot. And a thick and shiny dot of black ink marked the campsite when he chose to remove the pen. It penetrated the other layers of paper, unshapely, uglily.
Someone knocked at the window from the outside, interfering with their talk, and Tseng turned to meet the intruder. No one. Indeed. Probably wind and some large snowflakes. There sure could be large snowflakes here.
He listened carefully to everything Tseng had to tell him. Turk got more information than he or… was it so? Sephiroth has always been referred to as “ideal” in everything he did. Since Angeal and Genesis left, he felt like he didn’t care to continue being that. He didn’t care about anything and that would have been almost scary if it hadn’t been so unimportant to him. That was the reason why Sephiroth just quickly looked through the information he was given and said “Yes, sir” to Lazard – it was all the same, this mission or any other. That was the reason he didn’t visit Hojo as he had to do before a mission. That was the reason he looked at Tseng and felt something very similar to remorse. This turk was here to do his job and it didn’t matter to him what thoughts were corroding general’s mind. The only thing that mattered was mission and that was the only right way to behave.
Turk suddenly turned to the window but general didn’t pay attention to that. Tseng has to be over-concerning, that is why turks stay alive for so long. Milk was over. Sephiroth concentrate on the ink mark on the surface of paper. It was dark-blue, almost black. Like deep water or… the well.
Like that in Wutai… they say you should never look in the well at night… you might see something… did I do it? How long ago was it?
“I will check the maps upstairs before we go to sleep” he made an effort and came back, trying to concentrate on Tseng’s voice. It helped, and the ink mark was merely an ink mark, nothing more. “But on a second thought… let’s do like that” Sephiroth pointed at the camp and circled it with his fingertip. “As far as the weather conditions leave much to be desired, we should travel to the camp. There we can find and use their supplies and stay as long as we need to investigate what had happened. If the blizzard ends tomorrow morning, we will be at the camp-side before night-time, but, anyway, it would be very unwise to try and find the tracks and trails tomorrow after a snowstorm, we would lose too much time. We will travel to camp. Then, look for people… or what remained of them”
He spoke quietly and calmly, his voice low and emotionless. He didn’t care for those people, they are already long dead – even if anyone had a chance to survive wild animals’ attack, the blizzard killed them anyway.
They say if you’re dying of cold, then at last moment you feel warmth…
“I suggest we use that path, over here” general drew a line with his fingertip. “It is the shortest way. I can imagine that this is not the most common way residents would use but after such heavy snow it doesn’t matter. All paths are going to be bad, and this is the shortest”
He looked at Tseng for the first time attentively – as at a person, not an information-provider, and tried to imagine whether turk considered possibility of failure in this mission. If the answer was positive, then Sephiroth had another question – did turk equal failure to death in this case or no. General asked neither of these questions. “If you have no objections, let’s go upstairs and have some rest”
