So there are lots of good character progressions in Epic the Musical, right? But one of my favorites is how we learn about Odysseus’s mental state through his relationship with sleep.

Like he goes from

“What’s a title that a goddess can lend if I’ll never sleep at night?”

to

“Why are my eyes and my heart and my soul so heavy?”

to

“All I hear are screams, every time I dare to close my eyes. I no longer dream; only nightmares of those who’ve died.”

to

“Just let me close my eyes.”

to

“After everything you’ve done, how will you sleep at night?’ ‘Next to my wife.”

And it’s so good! Just seeing this man continually being beaten and broken, until he can’t be broken anymore, until all that’s left is the rage necessary to end this so he can go home.
