Robert Irwin, b. Long Beach, California, 1928–2023
Untitled, 1969
Blow-molded acrylic and acrylic paint
From Hirshhorn Museum wall text:
"In the mid-1960s, Robert Irwin abandoned his painting practice in favor of using unconventional industrial materials to create artworks that focus our attention on the very processes of perception, a shift that established him as one of the leading California Light and Space artists. Untitled is a thin, painted convex acrylic disc cantilevered off the wall, with four lamps casting interlocking shadows across the artwork and adjacent space. The shadows at once minimize the legibility of the disc’s edge and activate the wall so that it no longer reads as a passive, empty surface. Destabilizing spatial relationships, Irwin’s disc upends our perceptual expectations by giving object, wall, and light equal importance. At the same time, the work proposes that light, no longer in its customary adjunct role, can be an art medium itself."
