Presentation Reflection

Everyone did such a great job presenting their three genres this week! This was probably my favorite week of ENC2135 because the presentations were so entertaining. I was actually pretty jealous that I had such a difficult time coming up with my issue because some of you guys had super interesting topics. The one presentation that really stood out to me, however, was Maria’s. I really enjoyed her campaign about keeping Uber in the Miami-Dade area. I grew up closer to that area than I did to Tallahassee, so I felt like I could connect more with her audience. I liked that everyone did Buzzfeed articles but I really enjoyed the quiz Maria made.  It was a fun idea that came out looking very polished. Maybe I’m a sucker for quizzes, but I think that’s what made her project stand out to me. I’ve never actually used Uber before but her project made me want to try it out. The quiz was successful to her campaign in my eyes because it persuaded me to desire to take part in her campaign.  I would definitely consider signing her petition as well. I also thought her infographic was great. I liked how she used colors to brighten it up. It was also very concise and informative. Thanks for a great semester. It’s been real.

Presentation Reflection

All of the presentations throughout the week have been very entertaining to listen to and are all really well put together. This project was a very good way to wrap up the semester. Everything that we have learned this semester was all used in creating our final project. Every single person that presented did a great job with making their genres and promoting them. Brandon’s presentation stands out to me because of how big of a following he had. His project went viral because of how much support he had from his intended audience. His project definitely reached the right people to become that popular. Each one of his genres were neat and very appealing to the viewer which is very important for when you promote your work.

I also real enjoyed seeing all of the buzzfeed articles because I think that they are very entertaining and fun to read and look at on social media. I was going to make a buzzfeed but for some reason it had a tough time loading on my computer so I wasn’t able to create one.

But anyways, It has been a good semester thank you everyone for being a great ENC 2135 class and Happy Holidays to Everyone.

Presentation Reflection

I thought Caroline’s presentation on veganism was super interesting because a lot of my friends and family are vegan or vegetarian. Her buzzfeed article was really cool and a lot of the meals she posted on there look delicious! Also, I liked how she got people to respond to her on Tumblr and tell their stories about why they went vegan. It seemed very effective and it’s great that she was able to reach her audience and also get feedback. I also really enjoyed Karli’s presentation on shark finning because I had never heard of that in my life. The twitter she made for her project looked really good and I feel like it could actually be a real professional campaign to stop shark finning. The infographic/poster she made was also really well done. It was nice to see everyone’s presentations and see all the different genres that I never would have thought of such as a comic strip, a video interview, and a T shirt. Everyone was really creative and impressive! I wish that we could’ve heard more about the actual topic, since I wanted to learn more about shark finning and Barbie dolls and all the other stuff!

Chapter 10 BBG

Chapter 10 in the Bedford Book of Genres has to do with multigenre projects, which is exactly what we have been working on in class. The chapter briefly reviews what a multigenre project is and how to put one together. It then goes into the steps of actually assembling a multigenre project. In step one, you are supposed to introduce your topic. Step one is meant to consist of a one to two page introduction that includes a summary of your project, your audience, and the reason why you chose that specific topic. Step two introduced an idea that I hadn’t had much thought on: the sequencing of your genre pieces. You are supposed to put them in order based on your presentation. Before reading this article, I did not even think of this step.  Now, I realize that this is a vital step in the presentation. In the third step, you are supposed to title your project. This can be converted into a hashtag in social media genres, which is what we focused on during our last class. Titles are meant to be creative. It is the first thing an audience sees when exploring your project. If it is not interesting or eye-catching, your project may not be as successful. In step four, you make an artist’s statement. An artist’s statement is a way to discuss research that you have conducted and rhetorical choices you have made when putting this project together. Finally, you must package your multigenre project. Interesting visual aids and delivery really make the project look polished and put together.

Ch. 10 Reflection

A multigenre project is a project centered around one topic with three different genre compositions representing it.  The possibilities associated with a multigenre project go a step past regular genre projects.  The creator has an endless and unlimited supply of options that they are able to create to represent their topic or issue.  Some examples can be videos, blogs, collages, handmade objects, photo essays, and animations.  Before starting a multigenre project there are a few things to consider.  The first is how you are going to further your purpose.  This can be done by thinking of each genre as a piece and altogether they make the project whole.  It is usually good to create an Author’s or Artist’s statement for each genre but if not then at least one for your project as a whole.  Also consider how you will reach your audience, think about portraying multiple points of view in your project.  Using rhetorical appeals is always important, depending on what your genre is, utilizing ethos, pathos, or logos shouldn’t be too hard.  Choosing what modes and media your project will be in is the last choice to make.  Using a mix of both in your pieces can help the audience find different ways to connect with the topic.  To review, the steps to assembling a multigenre project are as follows; introduce your project and provide context, sequence your genre pieces, title your project, create and Author’s or Artist’s statement, and package your product creatively.  This chapter is without a doubt the most helpful thing we have read pertaining to project three.  It discussed everything that we had to do and the examples at the back of the book were an added bonus for those who are still a little confused.

Ch 10 reflection

“Assembling a multigenre project” is the perfect chapter for our upcoming project. The chapter explores the possibilities of the multigenre project, it proposes that you consider the rhetorical situation such as the purpose, audience, and modes and media. The chapter gives steps in making a multigenre project such as introducing the project and providing context, sequencing the genre pieces, titling the project, and creating an author’s statement. The chapter gives a few examples of real mutligenre pieces such as one entitled “Video Games and Violence: Who Should We Blame When Kids Are Violent?”. This chapter, along with class last Tuesday, really cleared up the expectations for project 3. I can now see the different mediums and different genres that can be employed for project 3. The chapter was really short, and I wish it was much longer, but the information was still super valuable and interesting. I’m glad we have to write an authors statement, because we get to explain our project and the process.

Readings for 11/17

In “Lay Out Pages,” I learned the difference between indented and block paragraphs. Indented paragraphs need no extra spacing, but block paragraphs need the space in between each paragraph to distinguish them. I learned I should put important information in a column that spans the body of the page, and the article talked about how white space helps avoid clutter. A page can’t be full of details or else the reader will get overwhelmed. Fonts are also a fun way to spice things up on a page, but choosing a font is actually important in order to efficiently communicate the purpose of the page.

           “Images and Photos” talks about how some pages need pictures in order to communicate the intended message and purpose correctly. Illustrations can carry a lot of information in an easy format. While people have the ability to edit pictures, the article warns that one should do so ethically. Editing should not compromise the original content of a photo. Also, I learned that when placing images on a page the text should flow around the pictures. Photos can be in different colors as well, which can either enhance or hinder the purpose and message.

           “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric” gave a list of questions and things to think about when trying to create a page. It asks the reader to think about if the intended purpose and audience is clear. It also reminds the reader to question whether the layout is effective and appropriate. It asks if images are the right side and if they really contribute to the page. These articles all helped give me a basis to go off of when creating genres for project 3.

Readings for 11/17

I probably reacted the same way the other students did, I was like “Ugh, I really have to read three articles?? Like that is going to be a lot.” But then as I started reading I quickly realized it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, the readings actually proved to be helpful. They turned out to be relevant and helpful for going into project three, the articles were about how to really design documents and the different medias, which that is all the project three really is, using media to target an audience. The articles really showed what needed to be done and what is important for creating our different medias. The par where it talks about breaking up the long paragraphs into something smaller with color and images to make it less boring and more interesting for the reader. I know personally for me I like looking at pictures instead of of long paragraphs of information that I think is pointless. Another point that I find really helpful from the reading was that you need reduce the clutter, you need to make sure the flow is simple and that anyone can understand it. This doesn’t mean you have to make it like a kindergartner project but you do not have to make some complicated project that only NASA scientists will understand.

Layout and Design Reflection

These three readings were really helpful for project 3 because we haven’t really talked about design much in class and I’ve never formally learned about it in the past. One of the readings recommends adding photos to “enliven” your writing, this is definitely applicable for project 3. The reading goes on to explain editing images digitally, which is something that pretty much everyone born after 1985 knows by heart. But, something that I haven’t considered even though I’m very familiar with how to edit images is that the coloring and placement of the images could affect their validity. Something else to consider is that the color pattern of your piece will affect the mood and the feeling that you want that piece to give off. 

The other reading called “Looking At A Design With a Critical Eye” proposes questions that you should ask yourself. This reading was kind of weird to me because it gave you every question imaginable but didn’t actually answer those questions. It asks “Are the margins sufficient?” and I honestly don’t know what makes a margin sufficient, so that part wasn’t very helpful.

The last reading explains how to make your layout effective. This was very informational to me because I sometimes have trouble deciding how to set up a paper. It also explains how to use font, charts, and graphs. Overall, the readings were really helpful for project 3.

Viral Marketing

Before reading these five articles I honestly had never heard of the phrase “viral marketing” and really had no idea what it was.  Since it seems to be very popular in today’s advertising world, I think it is necessary to at least know the basic facts.  

What is Viral Marketing?

-Viral marketing, or as it can otherwise be called viral advertising or marketing buzz, means essentially putting an advertisement out that is so cool and interesting that people will want to share it with others. The ultimate goal is that these marketing programs will create messages that will go viral and appeal to the masses of individuals all over the world.  

What does it do?

-Viral marketing decreases the amount of work that advertising companies and other businesses are forced to do and really puts a lot of the advertising power in the hands of the people.   The notion that ideas spread like viruses was really what started this movement.  As a company’s campaign increases in popularity, it is shared more and more with the masses until everyone has pretty much seen it and the advertisement, in other words, can be described as a “virus.” 

How does it work?

-It works because when people see their friends and family endorsing a product they are more likely to try it themselves.  Social media is becoming the main tool for viral marketing because all you really have to do is click retweet, share, or repost and everyone who follows you will see what you have shared.  In one of the articles it describes the campaign done on Twitter by Virgin Blue, the airline company, where they gave away 1000 tickets for only $9 each.  This campaign went viral because everyone was retweeting trying to win one of the tickets and so in turn everyone who followed these people was seeing their retweets.  This meant that even if their followers weren’t participating in the giveaway, they still were seeing the name Virgin Blue and so next time they went to book a flight they might remember that and choose to fly with that airline.  

When does it work?

-Viral marketing works best when the audience can identify with the campaign.  If the American Cancer Society is trying to raise awareness and posts a marketing video and then a cancer survivor or someone who lost a friend to cancer see’s that video, they will feel empathetic to the cause and most likely share it with their friends.  It also helps if there is something unexpected or a big twist that makes people want to keep reading or watching the advertisement.  Now that social media is so widespread, people are sharing things all the time and viral marketing is becoming a more and more popular way for companies to target their audiences.  

I really appreciate the fact that we had to read these articles.  Although it was a bit tedious having to read five different ones, I liked the examples of good advertisements and overall it was an interesting subject to learn about.

Viral Marketing Reading Reflections

First of all, I have to say I much prefer readings that are not in The Bedford Book of Genres or The McGraw Hill Handbook. The articles we read, although there were five, were not bad at all. I actually enjoyed reading about something that is so prevalent in society.

What is Viral Marketing? Viral marketing is a form of getting your product to the public in an easy and cheap way.

What does it do? Viral marketing spreads products “like a virus.” This means that through marketing techniques a product can become extremely successful in a short amount of time. This does not only apply to physical products though. It could be anything from promoting a car (like BMW), an album, or in one example they used President Obama’s campaign as a form of viral marketing.

How does it work? Viral marketing works in a very user based way. Instead of a company hiring actors to say how awesome something is, actual people end up advocating for the product. Usually a viral ad will have some sort of catch phrase or something memorable about it. This makes people want to go out and see this product for themselves. I suppose this could either make or break a product if it does not live up to what the ad is saying. The point of viral marketing is to make the product as accessible to the public as possible. Social Media is another important aspect of viral marketing. Websites like YouTube and Twitter are extremely important.

When does it work? Viral marketing works whenever a product sees huge success in a short amount of time. If not the product, the ad campaign at least becomes very popular. Like one of the articles said, they weren’t sure how many of the millions of views bought BMWs but the fact that there were so many views raised awareness to the car company.

Writing into the Day 11/10

I have a dog, but I do not have a puppy. Actually, I’ve never had a puppy. My family adopted my dog, Marley, when he was about two years old. In the summer of 2014, I received a phone call while driving back home from the beach. It was my mom. She asked me how I felt about adopting a dog. I was hesitant at first, mainly because she seemed to be overly excited. I was afraid she was rushing into things too fast. My mom spoke quickly on the other end of the line. She started to tell me the events that had led up to the current moment. You see, my dad is a locksmith and frequently drives around town fixing fire alarms, automatic gates, and home and business based security systems. This job takes him all around Florida but on this particular day, he was about a five minute drive from our house. This job took him to a vet’s office that had problems with its fire alarm. While working in the back by the kennels, my dad noticed something odd. Every time he would walk by the cages, a strange thumping sound would resonate. Eventually, he took the time and peered into the cages and saw a little black dog. The dog did not look like he was in good condition, either. He had a huge operating scar down his side, a weird haircut, and only one eye. However, this beat up little dog immediately captured my dad’s heart. He promptly took a video of the pup and sent it to my mom. Consequently, my mom called me to inform me that she was going to pick him up and take him for the weekend to see if he would be a good fit in our family. My dad left the job to go back to the security base and gather more supplies but when he returned to the vet’s office, the dog was gone. In that time, my mom and snuck Marley back to our house. My dad was surprised to say the least when he got home from work and saw the beaten up black dog in our house. That trial weekend, we discovered that my dad had come across the most affectionate dog he had ever met. We discovered his past was not an easy one, which drew us closer to him.

- This piece appears to be a narrative genre, i can tell because it uses first person and tells a story.

-The purpose of the document is to tell a personal story.

-The piece uses a lot of pathos. It definitely appeals to your emotions but describing the dog as beat-up, lonely, and affectionate. 

-The writing style of the document is informal and casual. She’s telling a story, so she doesn’t use any references or statistics. 

-The tone of the document is nostalgic and affectionate. You can tell from the story that Haley really loves her dog and fondly remembers the first day that they got her.

-The voice of the document is casual but still professional. It doesn’t use extremely difficult vocabulary but it also isn’t full of slang and colloquialisms

-There aren’t really any design elements because we had such a short period of time to put together the piece. So mainly, the document is just text-based.

-Research hasn’t really informed this piece since it’s a first person account from memory. She didn’t need to use research because it would have been unfitting for the piece.

Puppies - Persuasive

Puppies are arguably the cutest animals on the planet. They are so soft and cuddly, they love you unconditionally, and they constantly show affection unlike kittens. If you are a lonely person, or sometimes just feel like you want to be needed, getting a puppy is the best decision for you. With a puppy in the house, you’ll feel loved, safe, and also feel like a responsible adult. Adopting a puppy is also a great idea because you could be saving that pup’s life. In America, there are so many abandoned puppies that need a home. So many pups are dying each year from abandonment, malnourishment, or abuse. Adopting a puppy could be a saving grace, not only for you, but also for that pup. When adopting a puppy, it would be wise to consider how that puppy will act when it grows up. For example, do you live alone and need protection? Consider a pitbull mix or a boxer, they are known for being protective and territorial animals. Do you want a small dog that you can take everywhere with you? Consider a French bulldog or a corgi, they’re cute and also portable. 

Puppies are so darn cute and loveable that it’s almost rude to turn down a pup in need. When I finally moved into a house after living in the dorms, I knew that it was time to get a pup. I signed up as a foster parent and immediately got a call from the Humane Society about a dog that desperately needed a home. I picked up that dog and after 3 weeks of taking care of her I realized I could never give her up. After adopting her, I feel safer and more comfortable in my home. Not to mention, the unconditional love you receive from a dog is enough to convince you to adopt one. If you feel like you cannot commit to adopting a puppy, another great way to help would be to volunteer at the Humane Society. They are always in need of volunteers, and being able to play with dogs all day will do wonders for your mental health. 

Dogs have an average lifespan of 13 years. This means that your little puppy will eventually become an integral part of your family and will stick around for a long time. Another reason to consider adopting a puppy is that it helps families, and especially young children, cope with death. This might sound morbid, but exposing children to the unfortunate reality of life and death at a young age through the death of a pet can help them better understand and deal with the death of a family member or friend later in life. Another slightly strange advantage to adopting a puppy is that they can be helpful to young couples in deciding whether they want to, or can deal with, having children. Adopting a puppy has so many advantages that it’s almost impossible to come up with a disadvantage. Imagine coming home to a cute little pup sitting on your couch staring up at you lovingly, that’s enough to make me want to adopt a whole litter.

Chapter 9

First of all I would like to put out the statement that this Gif is my sub-conscious whenever I am not working on Project 3 or anything related to ENC2135.

This chapter was basically written for project 3!!! I wish we read it earlier because it helped clarify the whole remixing of the genre thing. I didn’t think you could use a powerpoint as a new genre so that blew my mind a little bit.

Also, I love how this book always picks interesting examples for us to read. I enjoyed reading the author’s statement about the movie review of X-Men. That is one of my favorite movies so I found it cool to read about it a little more. 

I agree with what the book says about peer-review. I look forward to workshops in class and conferenes because my peers or my professors always see something that I don’t see. I think it is important for writers to realize that they don’t have to take every piece of feedback they get and fix it. We have to remember that it is all opinions and we need to think about why they may have given that feedback.

I know revising a pain but it is important like the book says because our first draft is really just to get our thoughts onto a piece of paper. I liked the analogy of a painter creating a piece of art. Nothing is done in the first try, it takes weeks to mold and sculpt the project in a true work of art!

Chapter 9 Reflection

One great thing about this chapter was that it was surprisingly short in a concise non-repetitive manner that is completely out of character for this book. However even though it was short, it was full of useful information about project three and the revising and remixing of multi-genre projects. The first portion of this chapter gave some great guidelines about the importance of peer reviewing and how it is pivotal to get another set of eyes on a work because “it is impossible to stay objective when you have worked on something for so long”. It gave good advice that further backed up what we all have learned through peer reviewing and conferences over the course of this semester. Additionally, what I found the most helpful was the ideas on the remixing of genres because it gave great examples such as remixing a written work into a presentation, which is what I will be doing for project three. I found this section of the chapter very insightful and fitting for the project at hand. Therefore, this chapter was full of great information that I will now use to remix and revise my project three to the best of my ability.

ch 9 reflection

Chapter 9 presented some valuable information when it comes to revising your work. For examples, it can be a good idea to ask others for feedback on your piece if you’ve been working on it for a long time and can no longer revise it. Questions to ask someone who is looking over your work includes: What genre does the piece appear to be? What is the purpose? What is the tone, etc? The section titled “remixing your work into different genres” was particularly helpful considering Project #3 will be due soon. The chapter goes over different genres and the possible media options; I found this to be very informative. The chapter also goes over the “steps to assembling a multigenre project” which include introducing the project and providing context, sequencing the genre pieces, titling the project, and packaging the project creatively. The example given of the student’s project on video game violence really helped clear up some confusion I had about project #3. Overall, the chapter helped me to better understand how to create project #3. Chapter 9 provided valuable information on different types of genres and different medias that go with those genres. I feel a lot more confident about project 3 after reading this chapter.
