I wrote a poem about white privelige, and what I think it means to be white and stand along side people who aren’t. I invite feedback and opinions.
Because I never had to spit bars
To stop tears for cousins
I know privilege because my house is built in the hills
empty spaces in the confederate flag
For which blood has been spilled
Because I’ve never walked into math
And been immediately put in the back
Won’t let them steal no bases
But where does that line blur
Where the girl wearing the red hat
Becomes me while I become her
Because my great grandmother could sit around the tea table
say “our blacks are different then your blacks.”

There’s so much content out there
Small waist, fat ass, straight hair
People who look half like me
Trying to force you to be
Just like the girl they wanna see
Or the man they wanna treat
Like a king and a queen hand in hand
Ruling over the society for which I stand
But not for which I believe
And definitely from which I would flee
Because I don’t have to look too hard for a girl who looks like me
And still she’s the one called brave
Because she’s not blond and skinny
And because she’s not dating a “Dave”
Or a “Ben” or a “Brent” or a “Chad”
What makes this system so bad
Is that it praises people who look like me
Who sound like me who hang like me
But never respects the people who walk by me.
So I respect . I’ll never neglect, never reject...
I detect racism so I’ll continue to fight for equality
Since I’ve got privilege in my body
If I can teach this system one lesson
To stop the bullet from pressing
against one other human being.
My look a-likes will start confessin
Where does this story end?
With me, with you, with your sisters friend?
Cause I been watching too many people
Falling to their knees on the steps of their steeple
Yes i know y’all scrimmage
But I don’t know how to speak my truth
