thoughts on this article for @pinkocowboy (so I don't write a super long comment) and on a screen adaptation of infinite jest, because I think about it a lot
I'm going to preface this by saying I know like four actors and two famous people off the top of my head, so this will mostly be about their look and general vibe, not about their acting style. Also, I've both written and drawn infinite jest fan content, so I'm quite particular about eye color and hair color, but we're going to ignore that for the sake of this.
Don Gately - I think this guy is fitting enough, not really any comment. Checks off the big head and his face has the range of burglar/recovery house cook. Joelle - hell nah. I actually disagree with the implication here that Joelle had a bizarre or unusual beauty. I'd always seen her as a very stereotypically beautiful looking girl, approaching mean girls standard in university, and I think a basic hollywood pretty girl would be closer to that than Fka twig's sagittarius-aquarius birthchart placement vibe. If I remember correctly, even the way she dressed was quite unremarkable. I think all of her personality and quirkiness rather came as contrasting her appearance than complementing it. Hal - fair enough, just fair enough. I always pictured him in a way closer to Forrest than Tony, but either would be, well, fine. JOI - well that's just wrong. Pedro is too much of a dilf for this guy, who was essentially a huge nerd alcoholic scrawny loser. Way too much swag for the role, we need someone more pathetic looking. Avril - now, I don't think this is as unfitting as the JOI or Joelle fancasts, but I personally don't really see it. I always pictured Avril to have sharper features and I'm pretty sure she has blonde, if not platinum hair, and Jayma has a bit too much of a warm complexion for that look. If anything I see her as a better fit for an adult Joelle. Other than my own mother, I think Avril would fit somebody like Gillian Anderson or someone else on here said Anna Gun and I definitely see it. Orin - not much to say, I think Johnny is quite a good fit actually. Although in my opinion there's not much of a womanizer look to him, but that's just a detail. Mario - both of these guys are kinda too old imo, maybe Brad would be able to pull it off if he shaved. However I believe a young disabled actor would do just fine, personally I don't think it matters that much in Mario's case to respect his physical description exactly. Steeply - I'm definitely here for him being played by a drag queen, and this guy looks like he has the range for both Hugh and Helen. Marathe - decent, but personally I think Kenneth is too good looking / approachable looking for the impression I got of Marathe. Someone with a squarer face and more misanthropy in his eyes would be a better fit imo. Mike - no, just no. Timothee should have nothing to do with this adaptation, why is that twink in everything nowadays. I know he was really funny when he was younger, but literally all of his roles are of dark and brooding emo boys. It's just what he does. Gun to my head, I'd probably give him Stice or Clipperton, and reluctantly typecast him as Hal. And again, just like with Avril's case, we can dye his hair and give him eye contacts (good time here for anyone more knowledgeable than me to jump in and tell me if Mike's eyes are green or blue, because I've seen it both ways and can't for the life of me find something about it in the novel) but that doesn't change the fact that I've never seen this guy with something other than a dark brunet look. That's because it fits him, really well, and Mike has like a whole other thing going on. He's a virgo rising for fucks sake, I genuinely wonder what made op make this questionable choice. Okay I looked him up blond now and he looks lowkey creepy. I'm sorry but just no. Stice - this ain't it. This guy doesn't have enough of the required lost loser puppy vibe for this, plus is way too old and I don't think a crewcut will make this better. Wayne - now this here is too much of twink boylosery. I personally saw Wayne as having a fuller build and more confident look. I think Jaeden would be a much better fit for Stice or Mike. Also I looked this guy up on pinterest and he's really pretty damn. Lenz - I like this one actually, same for Gentle and Kate. I literally forgot who Millicent was and had to look her name up in the book epub so that's that. Clipperton - I also think he's a pretty good fit. As for Pat, I think Regina has a good mix of stern - kind - quirky vibe going on that would suit Pat.
This is my chance to talk about Poor Tony, finally. The way I understood the book, Poor Tony was a trans woman. It's mentioned that they have gender dysphoria and are always wearing women's clothing, so I choose to think Poor Tony was dfw's understanding at the time of trans/gnc people, or something along that line. I don't really see them being queer as a means to an artistic or rethorical end, just another side to a character as dfw often added. I never ever ever see people talk about Poor Tony, who I actually empathised with a lot and was super mad when they got that ending, so abrupt. I don't think the Infinite Jest movie should try to be inclusive beyond its means - like adding genders or sexualities to characters that didn't have them explicit beforehand (sorry op, for pemcandenza shotgunning you're gonna have to pray that wip leaves my drafts eventually) - but I think casting Poor Tony as a trans woman would be the best way to go about this.
That's that! Kind of crazy the guy who wrote this was part of csh or something. Now onto a screen adaptation of Infinite Jest - I think about it a lot, and I think it can be done - but not by anyone in Hollywood. I think so much of Infinite Jest is about more than what's told, but how it's told - from the size of the novel, to the footnotes, scattered narative and tangents that are not even tangential to the plot, it's a book that exists on more than one level, so I think if someone were to simply film it scene by scene in an unremarkable manner, that would be like only saying half the narrative. There's a lot to think about, especially as so much of the book itself is about film. When he'd talk about it, dfw would often mention how a film comes at you all at once, while there's no way a book to do that, and how that impacted the way he wrote Infinite Jest. I think if someone should do it, it would be amateurs or low level creators, who did it in order to explore deeper the way a novel about televisual entertainment trying very hard to not be televisual entertainment but also sometimes being televisual entertainment could be transposed to televisual entertainment. I think there's a lot of potential past the fancast - experimenting with lenses, maybe include remakings of JOI movies, So Much camerawork to somehow capture the annoyance of the way the narration never quite focused on what you wanted it to. It would probably have to be very long, to maintain its anticonfluence yk; It would have to find a way to be a movie about itself. I'd pay good money for someone really smart and creative to actually do it. Unless it's obscure arthouse, earning its name on the JOI filmography, I won't watch it. If it ever comes out as a stand up high budget production I'm reviewing it one star without watching /hj

it’s the emotional suppression leading to complete mental break, really. so high performing that people notice something’s off but don’t feel the need to step in till it’s too late.
it’s the ending/beginning that really solidified it. the moment you’re forced to confront all you’ve been ignoring and it popping you like a champagne cork. while this book elicited many, many strong feelings, hal’s break at the interview and how it was left effectively unresolved sent me genuinely reeling for multiple days. my break came at 17, too, but for me it led to me getting the treatment i needed to be a significantly more well adjusted person. i felt like real physical pain not being able to see the same resolution for hal (mind you if we did it’d be out of linen with the books themes and i think it’s a better work of art for leaving it ambiguous, but still!!! my boy!!!)
i went the whole book hoping and praying for this guy to get some emotional resolution and got it (!!!) with the dmz trip at the end, but then you go back to the beginning and it’s totally left up to interpretation whether it left a lasting impact. after much thought and some discussion of other people’s reading of the ending, my head cannon is that he isn’t actually permafucked, but that the institution of organized sport actually heard his monologue and just interpreted it as incoherent screeching and waggling bc they only see him as a body. he was taught his entire ETA career that his inner self must be serene, completely untouched by the outside world, when in reality one must acknowledge and accept how outside forces and traumas effect your mind in order to adjust and move forward
