Currently airing Asian dramas/shows Iâm watching:
Beautiful Love, Wonderful Life (SK)
9/10
Firstly, tigger warning for a storyline including suicide. This drama is about 3 very different families and how they become intwined in several ways over the years. This drama can be sad, really sad, but it also has some very sweet brilliant moments too. The character development is also some of the best Iâve seen in a while. And there are 2 characters who have amazing chemistry that I just need to get together already! (ep 32/100)
Failing in Love (SK)
8.5/10
This one is just hilarious and has a surprising amount of heart too. This drama is about a boy who desperately wants a girlfriend and his bestfriend who is in love with him. It may sound like classic highschool drama but the interesting group of friends make it so much more than that. Itâs shorter too so you can get through the episodes quickly! (ep 7/10)
The Tale of Nokdu (SK)
9.5/10
This was my most anticipated drama in a long time and itâs really not disappointed! This show started off about Nokdu, a man who goes into hiding in a town full of widows, as a woman. The cuteness this show began with didnât prepare me for how emotional it would get. Also Nokdu and Dong Jooâs chemistry has just grown and grown and they make me squeal! All the characters are so well rounded too! I love it (ep 22/32)
Off Gun Fun Night Season 2 (Thai)
8.5/10
I love this show with all my heart! Itâs very sweet and a lot of fun. Itâs not a drama itâs more of a talk show/sleepover hybrid. The hosts are Off and Gun who were the stars of the dramas âPuppy Honeyâ and âTheory of Loveâ. And the premise of the show is that they invite their friends and fellow actors around to play silly games in their PJâs. If youâve seen any gmmtv dramas youâll especially enjoy this. (ep 8/?)
Dark Blue Kiss (Thai)
8/10
Pete and Kao were side characters in âKiss: The Seriesâ and âKiss Me Againâ which were some of the first Thai dramas I ever watched. I was very excited for them to finally get their own drama. But their storyline in DBK is all about jealousy and Iâm not a fan of jealousy storylines, but these two actors know these characters so well now that regardless of that I find myself really enjoying every one of their scenes. And on top of that the side couple have some insane chemistry. (ep 7/12)
TharnType The Series (Thai)
9/10
What began as an incredibly controversial drama I was considering dropping, now 7 episodes later Iâm itâs biggest fan. Itâs about two college roommates, one gay and the other homophobic. Seeing these two characters start off as enemies and both grow and change each other for the better has been such a beautiful experience and I canât wait to see whatâs to come! (7/12)
HIStory3: Make Our Days Count (Taiwanese)
10/10
This is a continuation of the HiStory anthology series. This time itâs about Hao Ting who is an idiot (but also not an idiot) who loves with his whole heart and Xi Gu, the smartest guy in school whoâs extremely closed off after losing his parents. Seeing Hao Ting try to get Xi Gu to like him back has been too sweet to handle and these 2 are making this possibly my favourite HiStory series (sorry CTL) - the second couple are a bit meh but Hao Tings friends make up for that. (ep 12/20)
Finished Asian dramas Iâm watching:
Extraordinary You (SK)
10/10
I love this drama too much, which is why I have been really taking my time with it. This drama is about Dan Oh who finds out her life is a manhwa (comic) and she is just an extra. This drama has been too perfect for words! Dan Oh is one of my favourite leads ever and her and Haru are also on my list of favourite OTPs too. As I said this is a perfect drama to me...so far. (ep 12/32)
Love Affairs in the Afternoon (SK)
9.5/10
Another brilliant drama! Itâs about married couples who find themselves entering into affairs. This drama can be summed up in one word: POETRY! Itâs shot stunningly, the script is magic and the actors are so real! Guys trust me, watch this for the main couple, Iâve never seen a pair so made for each other and who need each other so much. As I said pure POETRY! (ep 15/16)
Dramas/movies Iâve finished this month:
Dear My Name (SK)
8/10
This is just a mini series but I NEED it to be remade as a full length drama. The premise is that a large percentage of the population at some point will have someone elseâs name appear on their body (like a tattoo) and that person will be your soulmate. Itâs a brilliant idea and was executed really well, I just wish there had been more time. (6 eps)
One Fine Week (SK)
8/10
Another mini series, but this one is about an idol and a girl who works in a coffee shop who look identical. The idol has trouble showing her emotions, which is going to be an issue on a reality show where sheâs meant to fall in love with a fellow idol, so the two girls swap places. This may be a premise weâve heard of before but it was executed really well and felt new and different. (10 eps)
Parasite (SK)
10/10
So I canât really say anything about this movie. Itâs basically about a boy from a poorer family who starts tutoring the eldest daughter of rich family. This movie is insane and by far my favourite of the year.
Tune in for Love (SK)
9/10
Another movie, but more romantic. This is the story of a boy and girl who keep meeting and falling in love but constantly keep getting torn apart. This one put me through the emotional ringer. I now love these 2 actors and although theyâre really famous this is the first thing Iâve seen them in and I canât wait to see their other projects now.
âLetâs be together. For the rest of our lives.âÂ
i do wonder what the shop owners made of shane and ryan, imagine agreeing to be on some guys webshow and they rock up with matching jackets, 70s dad moustaches, and that bizarre energy
Hi Shana! I'm a big fan of your work, especially your Gods and Monsters series! Speaking of, can you do a bit on Nike please? Only if you want to of course! Keep doing what you're doing and have an awesome day!
Styx knows Ares needs help.
Hades knows this. Charon knows this. Persephone knows this.Icarus knows this. Athena, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Hera, Artemis and Apollo knowthis. Possibly everyone whoâs not Zeus knows this.
But thereâs only so much any of them can do.
Hades and the underworld is always a place that he can cometo, a place for him to rest. Ares will go to his brotherâs volcanoes and soakhis aching muscles in the magma, Artemis finds him on the battlefield, Apolloplays him to sleep, Hera turns the tide of wars by whispering in the ears ofmothers and wives, but itâs not enough.
Thereâs so much war in the lives of mortal men, and Aresstruggles to shoulder it all, to endure it all.
Athena had helped the most. Having another war god to sharethe load helped, and itâs not like Athena is displeased with her increase infollowers. But the wars didnât stop, or even end more quickly, and if theywerenât all praying to Ares they were still praying for aid in war.
Styx wants to do something to help. But sheâs tied to thisriver, to this place, and she doesnât mind, exactly, except of course for whenshe does.
Thatâs okay. The underworld is where everyone ends up oneday, and thereâs someone right here who can help her.
Sheâs not afraid to go into Tartarus. Her river flows even there, and unlike those who are imprisoned there, she can leave whenever she likes. But just because sheâs not afraid doesnât mean she likes it, doesnât mean itâsa place she goes often.
The edges are lined with active volcanoes, and the light oftheir magma is all there is to see by.
Those titans who retain their sanity, their personhood, arein the center of Tartarus. Those on the edge are more monster than god. Theytend to eat every soul that they find thatâs less powerful than they are, andStyx wouldnât say sheâs less powerful, but she is differently powerful, and shedoesnât want to have to call out for Hades to save her.
She canât die. She is the space between life and death, but beingconsumed by a titan isnât something she wants to experience regardless.
Unfortunately for her, the titan she needs isnât the type tohang around the center of Tartarus, not causing trouble. Heâs right on theedge. Heâs always looking to cause trouble.
Pallas is large even for a titan, standing at the sameheight as a giant, so big that Styx could stand in the palm of his hand. Hisskin is mostly intact, but itâs stretched taught over his bones, and his mouthlooks like itâs filled with jagged glass rather than teeth. âWhat does thegoddess of the river of the dead want with me?â
His breath comes out putrid and rotten, like something diedin it. Probably several somethings did. She wrinkles her nose. âI need tocreate a person, and I want your help to do it.â

âThis is the big reveal thatâs mirrored in the game of mahjong. Rachel draws a tile in mahjong. Itâs a set-building game; itâs very much like poker, so you can draw a card that gives you the win. So Rachel draws the win, but instead of winning, she lets Eleanor have [the winning tile], and so that mirrors the dialogue because what she tells Eleanor in that moment is, âYour son has proposed to me, but because I donât want him to lose his relationship with his mother, I am going to say no and in the future, when he marries someone you think is appropriate, youâre going to remember that thatâs because of me.â ~ Bourree Lam, journalist
Crazy Rich Asians (2018), dir. Jon M. Chu
Itâs better than that. Sheâs a game theory expert, and knows better than to play a lose/lose hand. She explicitly says that to her students in the opening scene of the movie. This is Rachel using her professional expertise in her personal life, and turning a lose/lose situation into a win/win by not playing a game based on fear. Itâs paying off the very first thing we ever learned about her as the climax of the story.
The script for Crazy Rich Asians has the kind of scriptwriting tightness only the very best romcoms have, like Top Hat, How to Steal a Million, and While You Were Sleeping. Except it understands racism and misogyny better than those films do, for obvious reasons, so it juggles even more balls, with even more skill.
Itâs really well written, and should be taught at film school, stat.
