he was the beat of your pen against your notebook in the library, he was the aroma of your coffee waltzing around the room, he was the flowers swaying in the wind.

he was the laughter tucked into hidden alleys, he was the drowsy buzz of the commute to the university, he was the warmth radiating from your cheeks every time you laughed.

each day you had spent with him was filled with spontaneity

you remembered studying with him in the library, his feet tapping the rhythm to a song he once knew as he explained topics to you.

you remembered visiting the coffee shop he worked at, and scolding him over the free drinks he’d offer you, cup after cup.

you remembered his warmth and his touch and it was all you ever wanted.

as your fingers tightened around the glass, your eyes flitted over to where he stood behind the counter, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he worked his way skilfully around the machinery, ever so swift and precise.

in the last few weeks of your relationship with him, he had become more and more distant and silent, even forgetting to talk to you for days.

in that exact moment, as you watched his slim figure manoeuvre its way around the counter, you wondered what it would have been like if you had stayed.

what if you had ignored the red flags, what if you had given him more time, what if the distance didn’t exist?

it was no time to ponder over such insignificant matters - with both of your careers beginning to bloom, it was time to set your university days behind you.

“These roses are so pretty,” you smiled as your fingers ghosted over the delicate petals. Minghao let out a snort as he reached for it, eyebrows furrowed as he carefully budded each flower.

“That’s a peony.”

A blush coated your cheeks as you sheepishly looked away at the drizzle of rain dripping slowly outside. Minghao’s taste in jazz created a warm atmosphere, and you didn’t think you could have been happier anywhere else in the world. It was far after opening hours, but Minghao had let you in the shop after you stopped by with a frown knitted deeply into your brows.

After buying flowers for the birthday, you couldn’t visiting the magical shop - it was as if something was dragging you. Day after day, you chatted with Minghao, basking in the warmth of the shop and the gentle hum of his voice. It wasn’t just you who enjoyed his company: although he was surrounded by flowers, it was a lonely place to be. Besides, he liked the way the corners of your lips perked up when he teased you.

“Listen, I was just wondering,” he started, and you cocked an eyebrow expectantly. “Why don’t we go for a picnic this Saturday? It’ll be fun. Besides, the weather’s pretty nice this week. Just a suggestion, though, so if you’re busy-“

“That sounds like fun! I haven’t had a picnic in ages.”

“Meet me here at 12 this Saturday, then."

You met him in a flower shop.

On the day that you met him, the sky seemed to be wailing. Rain pelted on your umbrella as you scurried across the road to a flower shop - an attempt at a last minute gift for a distant friend. The bright blue door beckoned to you like a beacon of hope - you would be able to make it in time before the shop closed, and you’d be safe from the impending doom that loomed over you with the intention of ridding you of a birthday gift.

The shop smelled like roses and daisies, peonies and lilies of the valley, a million flowers mixed together to create the perfect smell. Quiet jazz wafted around the rows of flowers, and for a second (just a second) you were entranced. Each individual stalk had been taken care of, each petal delicate and vibrant. You strolled through the selection of flowers as if in a hazy dream, but the birthday rang at the back of your mind like an annoying alarm clock.

In a haste, you gently picked up a bouquet. The stalks of sunflowers, sprigs of lavender and baby’s breath were lovingly arranged together, wrapped in brown bouquet wrap and tied together with twine. As you carefully set it on the counter, your eyes met with another pair.

“My name is Minghao, and I shall be assisting you today. Will this be all?”

His voice is tired on the line, static and fragile. None of you have a very stable connection, or anything particularly interesting to talk about, but you’ve made it a point to call him before you fall asleep. Your window’s open, and the cool air brushes against your face. The poor connection doesn’t make the longing in any of your voices, and the only thing each of you want is to be in each other’s arms again.

“But you’re having fun, right?” You lean your head against the wall, drumming your fingers against the floor. He sighed as he replied, fatigue coating his voice. “It’s an amazing experience. I don’t think I could ever get tired of performing. I love performing the most in the world - it just gets a little lonely without you sometimes, that’s all,” he mumbled, and you couldn’t help but chuckle lightly.

“Only twenty four more days.”

Every day for two months, you’d call him right before you’d fall asleep, and he’d always pick up with a smile on his lips, eyes shining with the thought of talking to you after a long day. Although you have the same conversation each day, it’s nice to hear each other’s voices on the line.

“I seriously can’t wait to see you.” You whispered as softly as possible, and you heard him giggle. “I’d say the same thing, but you know I don’t lie-“

“Yoon Jeonghan!”

“I’m kidding!”

His laughter fills the lonely air in your bedroom, and you wish you could live in the moment forever. However, you hear someone’s voice on his side of the line calling him. “Hey, hyung, if you don’t stop talking to your girlfriend and take a shower-“ Mingyu's teasing voice is abruptly cut off with Jeonghan’s hasty goodbye.

“I love you very much, please sleep well - you can call me anywhere anytime no matter what ! I have to go now before Gyu breaks something.” you laugh at the haste in his voice as you whisper to him.

“I love you too."

The warmth of the covers doesn’t match the grimace on your face as you survey the screen, the unfiltered gore urging you to shut your eyes. Mingyu, however, stared at the screen with more concentration than he had ever displayed when taking a test.

“Kim Mingyu, that is absolutely revolting,” you hissed, as a female onscreen sliced a man in half with her feet. With her feet.

“Listen, baby,” he snickered, “you don’t have to watch it if you’re scared. We can watch something else.” After hearing this, you scoffed. “I’m not scared, Mingyu, it’s just gross.”

“Yeah yeah.”

You grumbled to yourself as you tucked yourself deeper into the blankets, ignoring Mingyu’s consoling fingers tracing circles on your thigh with a pout on his lips. The movie wasn’t all that bad - you just wished it was more of a we thing, instead of Mingyu’s attention being fully focused on the movie. You wouldn’t have cared if you had seen him a few days before, but this was the first time you saw each other in a week.

Letting out a sigh, you leaned on his shoulder as you closed your eyes. Mingyu silently wrapped his arms around you, pressing a kiss to your forehead. Popping an eye open, you stuck your tongue out at him. “I bet you I’m more interesting than that movie.”

“I highly doubt it,” he smirked at you, all attention lost to the screen. You gasped mockingly, shoving his shoulder. He chuckled and you buried your face in the crook of his neck.You felt his fingers tracing patterns on your neck, and you sighed in content.

“You know, I’ve missed being with you like this,” you whispered. His fingers intertwined with yours as he pressed another kiss to your forehead. The movie, all but unimportant, was instantly switched off as he grinned toothily at you. The dark room seemed to glow with some kind of warmth, and the faint sound of your neighbour practising a piano piece tinkled into the room.

“Then why don’t we stay like this for a while?”

The warmth of your tea match the heat of your cheeks (which you imagine to be scarlet at this point) as you suppress a guffaw, lips pressed tightly together as to not let anything slip out. Joshua’s face is a flushed pink, eyes crinkled at the corners and ends of his mouth pulled up in a smile. You savour moments like these and try to stretch them out, try to cut them out of a watch and stick them into a scrapbook for blue days.

It’s a little chilly outside, but the cafe radiates a warm glow - you smile to yourself as the familiar notes of falling for u start playing, and Joshua stares at you bashfully. He’s been jittery the entire time, and you aren’t entirely sure why. He glances at his watch, before rising abruptly. You stare at him in confusion as he rubs his neck nervously.

“Can you follow me? I need to do something."

The autumn air is cool against your skin as it brushes your cheeks pink. The two of you walk leisurely down a familiar path, to the park where you had your first date. The golden leaves crunch under your boots, and before you know it the both of you are seated on a park bench, huddled together and hands intertwined together.

You stare at him expectantly, waiting for him to do something, until he finally grasps your hands a little tighter. The park is almost empty; the only people you see are an old couple, walking by and talking in hushed whispers. “Y/N,” he starts, before stammering a little and composing himself. “I know this may not seem like such a big deal to you, but it really is to me, you know? It’s something small but I wanted to make it a little more meaningful,” he trailed off, “and, god, it’s going to be cheesy.”

“Hurry up and say it, you dweeb,” you lightly pushed him, trying to suppress the curiosity bubbling in your tummy. You stare at him for a few seconds more, and hear a “here goes nothing”.

“I’m falling for you. I’ve been falling for you from the very start, and when I spend time with you hours seem like minutes and you make rainy days a little sweeter. I love spending time with you and making you laugh and hearing you laugh. I mean- what I’m trying to say is that I love you, and I completely understand if the feeling isn’t mutual, because we’ve only been together-“
