One of the things I'm looking forward to seeing developed next season is the parallels between Akasha and Gabriella and Claudia. All of them have been constrained by familial roles they don't want and pushed into carrying them out to support other people at the expense of their own desires and their own freedom.
There's Gabriella confined in her loveless marriage, getting pregnant and losing child after child until she pays a midwife to nick her womb. And the only person she does care for is her youngest boy and her child's need for her to be his mother is so overwhelming that she runs away from it, over and over. Armand wasn't the only desperate one in that theater box.
And Claudia, who is created a vampire so that she can fulfill Louis' need for a child, and later a sister. He tells her he's her father, her uncle, her older brother, all positions where he has power over her in some way, and she owes him something because she belongs to him. She rejects all of that burden in the seance scene.
As for Akasha, she's been 'kept' for centuries, constrained by Marius 'as the mother of us all' for the good of everyone else and who cares about what she wants. Her fury when she wakes up in the next season is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
