[...]              a speedy but silent dash around the house has him finding the collapsed puppy. then there’s another rapid call to daewon. he knows it’s late, but the family dog is sick, at least the other’s willing to see kkuma even out of regular hours. jiwon skips the kennel, carrying the canine out of the house in his arms and rushing over to where the vet resides. adrenaline runs high, but even then he withholds all his energy and knocks politely on the other’s door.      “ daewon?  “      in the late night, his voice sounds all the louder.       “ it’s jiwon and i brought kkuma.  “

·˚                    (   *   & . Daewon wasn’t terribly fond of being woken up in the middle of the night, much like anyone else wouldn’t be. His already icy and snappy attitude tended to be amplified when the lack of sleep started to take hold. It’s caused some unfavorable situations, in places such as the grocery store or campus if his previous university. The only place that his grumpy, sleepy irritation didn’t dampen was the veterinary office.

It was unclear just what time it was. He didn’t happen to check before someone was rapping at his door presumably late at night, judging by the pitch black status of his bedroom. With an exasperated sigh, he flips the blanket off of his body, the chill of the night air only irritating him further. He’s down the steps in no one, attempting to rub the sleep out of his eyes and ready to yell at whoever had the mind to wake him up in the middle of the night. Initially, he fails to hear the unknown person yelling behind his door.

“What the hell a-“ Daewon begins to yell as he opens the door, the sight in front of him silencing his anger instantly. The familiar face of Jiwon alone wasn’t what made him stop, but the nearly unconscious animal in his arms has alarm bells ringing in his head. His face softens instantly as he reaches to the side to grab his car keys off the hook, stepping out without a word to usher the bartender towards his car.

“What happened?” The autopilot of his veterinarian training starts to kick in when he opens the passenger door to Jiwon to climb in, eyes trained on the animal in case anything else suddenly happened. In a flash, Daewon is in the driver’s seat, prepared to book it. “Hold on tight.”

She does readily, younger brother placed to his feet to scramble beside her, inane babbles swelling up with babyish laughter, happy to be wherever his sister was, honestly. “You know, that’s not a bad way of looking at it, actually.” His head at a curious little tilt, eyes drifting upward jokingly, pretending to think it over as he steps indoors finally. “Counterparts … ? Haha, just kidding, though I do find all work commendable,” a nod, “especially those in medicine. I may be a little biased, though.” His smile is meek, scintillating the eyes as he winks off the obvious. “How long have you been a veterinarian for? I imagine it’s got a different pace now, huh?”

·˚                    (   *   & . “I suppose you’re right.” Daewon recounted Kiyoung’s comparison in question as they begin to enter the Dae & Dae household. “I’m inclined to agree. I believe this’ll just stay between us, in that case~”

“For about two years now, I believe.” Daewon says after taking a second to think about it. “Though I’ve only been working in Busan for six months. I was in Seoul before.” As attractive as Jiseok was, that was as much as he’d like to spill regarding his life, especially the one before becoming a veterinarian. He struggled to talk about it especially to those the just met.

Daewon laughs as the kitten peers down curiously at the loud child, very intrigued by the new set of humans entering her home. She tracks the movements of both children until her owner gets down to their level when they’re finally inside. He makes a point of showing Kiyoung how his arms hold the smaller animal, as he’s gotten too many veterinary visits with owners bringing in injured animals that were either improperly picked up or held by young children. This was an opportunity to teach her.

“Here, hold her like this.” He carefully adjusts Kiyoung’s arms, manipulating them into place to cuddle Oreo without squishing her completely. “Just remember to never pick up a cat by their ears or tail. If you wanna pick her up, let her go to you..” He honestly feels like an animal teacher on Animal Planet. “And don’t panic if she jumps down. Cats are really good with heights.”

The veterinarian watches Kiyoung and Kibum carefully as they navigate the new and exciting concept of a small kitten, not terribly worried as he knows she’ll retreat if feeling threatened. With a satisfied smile, he returns his attention to Jiseok. “Uh, well, are you guys hungry, possibly? We don’t have many groceries right now, but I’m sure I have something in mind…”

“Well look what the cat dragged in.”

·˚                    (   *   & . “For small kitty, she’s pretty strong.” Daewon speaks with a lilt, nodding his head at the bartender he’d seen for possibly the fifth time this week. Now that he finally completed training and moved from Busan to run Yunhwa’s clinic, it became infinitely easier to stop by the bar everyday after work. That, and the commute would always shave two to three hours of his day that he could now spend elsewhere.

The veterinarian hops onto a barstool while loosening his tie in the process, “The usual, please?” he requests with the quick bat of his eyelashes, beaming as he watches the bartender react to his dumb antics. It was a setting he could get used to.

“Do you need help with that?”

·˚                    (   *   & . Holding off on grocery shopping couldn’t wait any longer, unless the two housemates wanted to starve to death out of sheer laziness. Cereal was their dinner for the past three nights before Daewon finally said *fuck it* and finally went. The pantry and fridge would finally be full, but it left him with a trunk full of groceries he was sure would take three or four trips. As much as he wanted to be *that guy* and do it in one trip, it wouldn’t be without disaster.

“No, I think I-“ Daewon turns to shoo the approaching neighbor away, only to be surprised by the face of his current object of affection. He nearly drops a case of water he’s lifting out of the trunk, but is quick to stabilize and avoid making a total fool of himself. “Oh, Jiseok!” A nervous chuckle accompanies the exclamation, thanking the cooler air of the approaching evening from giving away the fact his face was starting to heat up. “Hey, hi. Good Evening to you.”

This was pretty much a great opportunity to get to spend time with his neighbor, though if it were anyone else he would’ve declined. Not that Jiseok had to know that. “I… well, if you wouldn’t mind.” he offers a timid smile. “I’ll definitely make it up to you. It’s a lot of groceries, after all.”

“I see no one has ever bothered to teach you manners.”
