I was gonna make a silly joke about how Jon could probably lie to God's face and get away with it, at this point. Cause, you know, the "stricter parents" to "sneakier kids" and so forth
But let's talk about Jon Kent and learned helplessness, instead
Jon had no agency. Clark and Lois gave him no agency for his entire life.
Jon didn't even know what species he is for the first ten years of his life and we don't even know if he ever would if his powers never surfaced (not how it works in the least, just making a point) considering Clark only told him because he literally had no other option.
What Jon knew was that, somehow, his parents always knew what he was up to. No matter what he did or where he was, his parents would know about it. It doesn't really sound serious, but it is. And we see it in the fact that there was a running joke in his school about how often he ends up in the principle's office.
Children getting in trouble now and again is normal. Healthy, even. Children being ALWAYS in trouble means that something's wrong (Granted, most of that was the Lane gene. But the other part was that Jon likely felt trapped and acted out the only time of day his parents couldn't hover over him. And maybe a tiny bit of always feeling wrong and out of place. For obvious reasons)
And then Jon learned how and why. His dad's Superman. He's Kryptonian. He's an alien.
And he's okay with that. He likes that, despite all the bullshit that comes with it
But he's not allowed to explore that. His dad never tries to share anything about that beyond his powers. Powers he loves but isn't even really allowed to use. Not if he stays a "civilian"
The choice is clear. Live his entire life masking as a human. Or take part in the hero business
And the only way his parents will allow him to be a hero is to be Superboy.
It doesn't matter what his morals and ideals are. Who he is or who he wants to be. Superboy stands for specific things.
The only way to be a hero is to be Superboy
The only way to not have to keep living a lie for his entire life is to be a hero
And being a hero can be taken away if he steps out of line.
And they will know when he steps out of line. They always do.
And that's where a little birdie comes in to finally encourage him to put himself before his dad's feelings
