From the August 10, 1942 Sports feature: âSUMMER SKIINGâCalifornians bask in deep snows at Lassen Volcanic National Park.â According to LIFE, âIn California the virus that infects the skiing enthusiast does not die with the coming of summer. As the vast snow fields of the Sierras melt, skiers simply climb higher and higher until they reach the peaks where the snow caps last all year. One of Californiaâs favorite places for summer skiing is Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park.â This image ran in the story and shows 4 women applying sunscreen to prevent high-altitude sunburns.
