Basket weaving is an important art form and craft of many traditional cultures throughout the world. Both utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing, the handmade basket serves many purposes in a community. In our modern culture of mass production, we often take ready-made things for granted. In the Montessori classroom, baskets are used extensively. Like other weaving techniques, learning to produce something so basic as a basket provides a new perspective on our built environment. From an art therapy perspective, the process of weaving has a calming effect through it's rhythmic repetition of gentle manipulation. This patterning process quiets the heart and focuses the mind, as well as builds finger finesse.
