David Bowie as Pierrot for his album "Scary Monster and Super Creeps"

Lindsay Kemp cast a young Bowie in the 1967 stage production Pierrot in Turquoise. Bowie famously resurrected the Pierrot figure for his album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).

Photographer Brian Duffy shot black-and-white photographs of Bowie wearing the silver-blue Pierrot suit designed by costume designer Natasha Korniloff. Edward Bell then painted over the photographs using gouache, collage, and airbrushing. He intentionally smudged and altered the portrait to give it a fragmented, surreal, "distorted clown" look.

​"I'm Pierrot, I'm Everyman... What you see on stage isn't sinister, it's pure clown. I'm using my face as a canvas and trying to paint the truth of our time on it."
