It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.

This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.

“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.

“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.

“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.

Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.

Just. READ. THE. GOD. DAMN. SIGN.

This is super embarrassing, but this did happen to me yesterday. I tried to walk in a door with a sign that said "Use other door ->" (and which was locked) before I saw the sign. I am currently still dying of mortification.

But you then read the sign and figured it out! Instead of assuming you were locked in/out and bothering someone about it.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou is by no means a flawless movie, but it is a better adaptation of The Odyssey than what new movie seems to be.

I want to do a much larger rant on this but like. Dude wanted to make a movie about the bronze age collapse but lacked the creativity and talent to do that. So he decided to butcher The Odyssey in service of that goal.

Towards the end he literally has Odysseus say "our age of bronze". Like that's the lack of subtlety and hackery I am talking about here.

It should also be noted that it appears the only knowledge he had of the bronze age collapse or The Odyssey came from Wikipedia summaries.
