Signal Boost for Writers: Research & Fact-checking comm on Dreamwidth

There used to be a great Livejournal community called "Little Details" that helped all kinds of fiction writers (fanfiction, original works, DMs etc.) with their research and fact-checking.

That comm no longer exists, but it has now opened again on Dreamwidth!

I've been wondering about this since I played for the first time, but do you happen to know if in Ann's rank 9, is Joker's platonic dialogue option ("You have the others.") the same in Japanese? did a weird translation happen here or is this line strange no matter what? 😂

You won't be surprised to hear that this appears to be a translation boo-boo.

みんながいる minna ga iru You have the others. We're all here for you.

minna means "everyone", and often excludes the speaker—but just like the English "everyone", it can also include the speaker, depending on context. Here are a few examples from the P5 script:

Futaba (telling Ryuji everyone present will tell Sojiro on him) ここにいるみんなが証人だ。 koko ni iru minna ga shounin da Everyone here is a witness. Maruki (after his awakening to Adam Kadmon) みんなが望む⋯現実を⋯ minna ga nozomu... genjitsu o... The reality… we wish for… Gentle-Looking Mother (in Maruki's reality, after the revival of Kotaro, their formerly-dead dog) 今のまま、みんなが幸せに暮らせるの。 ima no mama, minna ga shiawase ni kuraseru no All of us can live happily together here…

In the first example, Futaba uses minna to include herself, but exclude Ryuji. In the second, we know Maruki presumably wishes for his own reality, so his minna includes him. In the third, the Gentle Mother is talking about how their family can all live together now—including her.

So while minna ga doesn't always exclude the speaker, Joker's response has been translated as if it did. Of course he doesn't brush crying Ann off with "well, I can't stand you, but everyone else likes you just fine"! He was supposed to say that she had the whole group, their entire friend group, including him.

This is why Ann goes on to talk about that group—which certainly includes Joker:

Ann 今の私には、仲間がいる。 ima no watashi ni wa, nakama ga iru I have our team now.

How would I translate it? Probably, as up at the top, "we're all here for you". Joker's often not actually a dick, he's just translated that way. C'est la vie.

the funniest dynamc between my boyfriend and i is the chef/baker divide runs so deep. experimentally my boyfriend is a genius with figuring out what flavor profiles will not just taste good together but also will be enjoyed by the specific audience he is cooking for. a recipe is not a guidebook so much as a suggestion and he will frankenstein ideas together to get exactly what he wants to happen. he also didnt know that sugar will not work properly if you dont mix it with the wet ingredients in banana bread and when i asked 'why didnt you do it in the order of the recipe' he said 'i didnt really think it mattered'. autistically i exploded his head in my mind

hellooooo so there's something i've been curious about: u know when (ka)sumi sees black mask crow for the first time and joker get two choices of "oh look your true outfit/wearing that one eh?" for me it sounds like a playful teasing/sarcasm in eng but does jp also carry the same tone? in addition, im also curious about "just everyday akechi/ (forgot the other choice oops)" comment

Hello! Let's have a quick look at those lines. Here's the first pair:

そっちで来たか socchi de kita ka Wearing that one, eh? Oh, you came in that? 本来の姿だな honrai no sugata da na Oh look, your true outfit. Oh, look, your true form.

The first one is pretty much the same, but the second is different. sugata does mean someone's outfit or appearance, but honrai no sugata is a common phrase used to refer to someone's "true form"—such as a Shadow's.

This pays off with the next pair of responses you mention:

いつもは違う itsumo wa chigau Yep, this is his normal. He’s usually different. あれが正体 are ga shoutai Just everyday Akechi. That's his true form.

If you've played with the Japanese audio at all, you know shoutai—from Joker's yell as he ambushes, "Show me your true form!", shoutai o misero! So both the "true outfit" and "everyday Akechi" responses are wordplay, on the idea that Akechi is now in his "true form".

But note that first response here, itsumo wa chigau. In English, both responses are the same—essentially, "he's always like this". But the Japanese ones seem to differ?—you can say this is his true form, or you can say yeah, he's not always like this.

As for the tone—I'd say the tone is fairly similar, with the first pair being pointed, and the second being more serious, in reply to Yoshizawa's nervousness. You could read them as playful!—it really depends how you read the situation. It strikes me as being a little fraught, lmao.
